Executive summary

System/Component details This design model targets illuminaire improvement in terms of lighting, and

energy efficiency. Target illumination at working plane surface and energy efficiency must be

above the current conditions. Materials and equipment used – Rhopoint RIQ26 Glossmeter, Extech

SDL470 UVA UVC Light Meter, 25 meter tape measurer.

Design objectives: Accurately model the room using DIALux design suite with materials and

equipment specified above. Run simulation and complete analysis using DIALux software. Determine weak points and improvement areas. Find equipment and materials that reinforce the weak points and

improvement areas.

Preliminary design calculation – Light Distribution Measurements

Main constrains: Limiting factor during light distribution modeling, was inability to model the

actual light distribution matrix into DIALux.

Preliminary design calculation – Gloss Measurements and Materials

Critical Parameters: Gloss was measured in % of light reflected from a surface at 3 different

angles (20Deg, 60Deg, and 85Deg). 85 Degree angle measurements were used as more appropriate, as the

majority of surfaces were medium to low reflectance. Main constrains:

Limiting factor during material simulation was the lack of information of the original manufacturers, and accurate CAD data of the furniture and objects.

Issues Encountered

Some Issues were encountered during design: It was hard to get accurate 3D models of the furniture, as not all manufacturers

provide those online. Some of the room materials had to be estimated and guessed, as their origin

was unknown.Gloss values measured were difficult to factor in into the design suite, as design

suit definition of the reflectance factor, did not actually correlate with the reflectance factor of the gloss meter manufacturer. A workaround was adopted by applying a “reflective” coating to the surface of the materials, that provided the gloss factor, meanwhile the “reflectance factor” of the material was a mere color property.

DIALux design suite has difficulty rendering detailed 3D objects, unlike SolidWorks (for example). As a result – every simulation took 1 hour (on average to complete). Therefore another limitation during design was an insufficient number of accurate simulations with different luminaires.

Final design – Conclusion

Final solution to the design included the following:140W Fluorescent STIFF 88637W90 Light fixtures with T8 light bulbs were

replaced by LED LVO04-4x36-011 PRS alternatives.LED LVO04-4x36-011 PRS Light fixtures provided an overall increase in

average brightness by 34%Light distribution in the room became more even (seen on graphs)Yearly cost saving were calculated to be $608.02 with initial one-time

investment calculated to be $438.00 (Parts + Labor).
