john 3:16 - I don't understand it -- Author unknown

In the city of Chicago, one cold, dark night, a blizzard was setting in. A little boy was selling newspapers on the corner, the people were in and out of the cold. The little boy was so cold that he wasn't trying to sell many papers. He walked up to a policeman and said, "Mister, you wouldn't happen to know where a poor boy could find a warm place to sleep tonight would you? You see, I sleep in a box up around the corner there and down the alley and it is awful cold in there, at night. Sure, would be nice to have a warm place to stay." The policeman looked down at the little boy and said, "You go down the street to that big white house and you knock on the door. When they come out the door you just say "John 3:16" and they will let you in." So, he did, he walked up the steps to the door, and knocked on the door and a lady answered. He looked up and said, "John 3:16." The lady said, "Come on in, Son." She took him in and she sat him down in a split bottom rocker in front of a great big old fireplace and she went off. He sat there for a while, and thought to himself "John 3:16.... I don't understand it, but it sure makes a cold boy warm."

Later she came back and asked him "Are you hungry?" He said, "Well, just a little. I haven't eaten in a couple of days and I guess I could stand a little bit of food. The lady took him in the kitchen and sat him down to a table full of wonderful food. He ate and ate until he couldn't eat any more. Then he thought to himself "John 3:16... Boy, I don't understand it, but it sure makes a hungry boy full." She took him upstairs to a bathroom to a huge bathtub filled with warm water and he sat there and soaked for a while. As he soaked, he thought to himself, "John 3:16... I sure don't understand it, but it sure makes a dirty boy clean. You know, I've not had a bath, a real bath, in my whole life. The only bath I ever had was when I stood in front of that big, old fire hydrant as they flushed it out." As he laid in the darkness and looked out of the window at the snow coming down on that cold night, he thought to himself, "John 3:16... I don't understand it, but it sure makes a tired boy rested." The next morning, she came back up and took him down again to that same big table full of food. After he ate she took him back to that same big old took a big, old Bible and sat down in front of him and she looked up at him and she asked, "Do you understand John 3:16?" He said, "No, Ma'am, I don't. The first time I ever heard it was last night when the policeman told me to use it." She opened the Bible to John 3:16 and she began to explain to him about Jesus. Right there in front of that big old fireplace he gave his heart and life to Jesus. He sat there and thought, "John 3:16. I don't understand it, but it but it sure makes a lost boy feel safe." You know, I have to confess, I don't understand it either... how God would be willing to send His Son to die for me, and how Jesus would agree to do such a thing. I don't understand it either... but it sure does make life worth living. WHAT DOES JOHN 3:16 MEAN IN YOUR LIFE? For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. A THANKSGIVING FOR AN OLD DEBT REPAID

By Justin Glenn This begins with a “Thank You” to Mtr. Travis, Jean Williams, and all their many helpers who initiated and completed our All Saints parish project “Sole Hope.” This outreach, of course, provided life-saving shoes to barefoot African children. Our efforts blessed “The Least of His Brethren” far away, but they also blessed me in a special way.Like Gil Crosby, I enjoyed square and round dancing for a lot of years, and among my

best friends there was Gene Moulton. Even after both dancing clubs folded up, I kept up my friendship with Gene, and as his health slowly declined I enjoyed talking on the phone with him several times a week. Gene had proudly served in the 24th Division and was stationed in Japan in the late 1940s. When the Korean War broke out, this division was the first (and initially the only) American force to be rushed to Korea in a desperate attempt to stem the North Korean onslaught. The division was overwhelmed and shot to pieces, and even its commander, Medal of Honor winner Maj. General William F. Dean, was wounded and captured. Gene was one of the very few in his outfit who survived to fight on in the successful defense of the Pusan Perimeter. He somehow came through the war unscathed, I think that’s one reason why he always had a grateful and generous heart. In spite of his own health problems, for many years he single-handedly housed and cared for his invalid mother and then his invalid Aunt Mildred until their deaths in his home. A few days before he died in the spring of 2010, I visited Gene for the last time in his small house that he had mostly built himself. It was just north of Havana on the dirt road that he had named Yellow

Rock Road. (A “yellow rock” is a square dance call meaning “a hug”). As I began to tell him good-bye, he pulled out a $20 bill and

asked me to take it. I didn’t want to, but he insisted so firmly that I couldn’t refuse. He then told me a story of when he was a small boy in Jacksonville. In the depths of the Depression, he often had to walk to school barefoot, even in the coldest weather. He vividly remembered the ice on a frozen puddle cracking under his bare feet. Once a year, he said, a local shoe store would place a notice in the newspaper when a hard freeze was expected. The owner of the store announced that on the following day he was setting aside some pairs of free shoes for children who had none. Gene got

up early to be one of the first in line, and he was one of the barefoot kids who received a pair of shoes. He asked me to use the twenty dollars to “pay forward” that gift of shoes that meant so much to him at the time and was still much on his mind as he lay dying. Someday, if I ever met anyone who was barefoot, I was to give him or her that twenty dollars. I told him I would try. Years passed, but I never seemed to find that opportunity, and I had almost forgotten about it. Until our parish “Sole Hope” Project suddenly reminded me and gave me a chance to keep a promise to an old friend. So, dear counters, please know that when you came across that twenty-dollar check marked for our shoe project it wasn’t really from me. It was from Gene.

STORY OF IMPACT: DEMBE

After miles of potholed roads and a vicious rainstorm, the Sole Hope team was led into Dembe’s house. Dembe is in second grade at his

local primary school. He has been struggling in school because of the jiggers in his hands and feet. It's hard to hold the pencil because of the pain. It's hard to pay attention because

of the itching. It's hard to learn when people are making fun of you.

Dembe loves school, and he is a smart kid, but his jiggers have held him back. "My favorite subject is physical education," he says. And yet, because of the jiggers in his hands and feet, he hasn’t been able to participate in the games he loves.

His father put him in the car that first day knowing that Sole Hope could change his life. Dembe has learned at the outreach house that the main way to prevent jiggers is to wash his hands and feet. Before his jiggers were removed, he was unable to put his hands into the water because the pain was too much to bear. "I am most looking forward to washing." he says. As he heals and discovers a jigger-free life, we have seen a new light in this little boy. A light that

shines through as he picks up and throws a ball. A light that speaks wonders when he picks up a crayon to draw. Dembe has such a bright smile, and yet his first days at outreach he didn't show it to anyone. Because of Sole Hope, Dembe gets to draw and write without the pain and the stares from his classmates. He gets to learn. He gets to join in the games he loves. He gets to be a kid again.

Mtr. Travis on Sabbatical Mtr. Travis left for sabbatical on July 31 and will return Sept. 28. We sent her with our blessings.

We also strongly encouraged her to bring back any great ideas she gathers as she visits churches or spends time on retreat. Sherri McNeece, Sr. Warden has been doing a wonderful job of keeping the church going.

Spaghetti Lunch for Sole Hope

Thanks to everyone who made this a rousing success: Vienna and her decorators made us feel we were really in an Italian Bistro; The Daughters of the Holy Cross served us our meals; the cooks who prepared the food; those who attended and ate heartily; and last but not least all who donated funds that allowed us to send more than 40 pairs of shoe tops to be assembled in Africa.

NEWS FROM THE WORLD-WIDE ANGLICAN COMMUNION Submitted by Justin Glenn

SAD NEWS FROM SOUTH CAROLINA [This an excerpt from articles by the Rev. Canon Phil Ashley and other related articles that appeared on the website of the American Anglican Council The excerpt deals with the questionable administration of justice that recently occurred in South Carolina on Aug. 2, 2017. Overturning a lower court ruling, the state Supreme Court ruled that the vast majority of the Anglican churches in the Diocese of South Carolina cannot take their valuable properties with them. The swing vote in the decision came from Justice Kaye Hearn who was an outspoken member of the Episcopal Church and who made little attempt to conceal her opposition to the Anglican side of this case] If the August 2 decisions stand, the future the historic Anglican Churches of Charleston is unsure. They are historic landmarks that cannot be sold and turned into condos, townhomes or retail boutiques as other TEC bishops have tried to do. These Anglican Churches left en masse (80%) with the clear majority of their members when they left TEC. There are not enough Episcopalians to keep the buildings open and maintained. This is a sad situation. What can God’s people do? The psalmist answers quite simply “There is a place for righteous anger (see Psalm 35), but don’t react to the wicked with their own weapons. Don’t fret.” Don’t be constantly and visibly worried, anxious and distressed. Don’t get heated. Don’t be envious. Resist the temptation to play the same games as those who do the wrong thing. Resist the temptation to harbor a spirit of resentment—which is tantamount to doubting God’s final justice. Don’t plot or gnash your teeth and plan to slay those who do wrong with the sword—let God take care of that (see vv. 10-15) Instead… “Trust in the LORD and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Delight yourself in

Page 5: First All Saints Service, July 2€¦ · house and you knock on the door. When they come out the door you just say "John 3:16" and they will let you in." So, he did, he walked up

5

the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart.” (Ps. 37:3-4) In other words, shift your focus from the wrongdoers to GOD. As followers of Jesus Christ, rest in his perfect work of salvation, receive the promises of the Father, and let the Holy Spirit stir up in you and me every good gift for the furtherance of His Kingdom. Cultivate an attitude of faithfulness—and do it right where you find yourself! That’s what it means to “dwell in the land and enjoy good pasture.” Do good in the place God has given you. And what if that place is up for grabs? No matter. God works wherever he sends us to wait—even those places where the wrongdoers dominate (see 37:34). God calls us to seek the welfare of the city where he has “carried us into exile,” and to put down roots however temporary our stay may be (See Jer. 29:4-7). Charlie Hill - Celebration of Life August 5, 2017

Charlie Hill and his wife Betty were long time faithful members of this congregation before moving out of

town. Charlie and Betty supported several All Saints ministries and opened their home for many church events. Charlie loved his Lord, his family, his friends and his football. He was greatly admired by many and will be deeply missed.

Church Outings

Wakulla Springs

In May, several of us went to Wakulla Springs to enjoy lunch in the lodge and then an exciting jungle boat ride. The lunch was tasty and except for a pesky fly or two we all enjoyed the food. The boat ride was exceptional and the wildlife was out in full. We even had a manatee escort for a while. The ranger who narrated the trip was top notch and kept us entertained the whole way.

Star Spangled Summer May-Haw

In August, a few of us went to enjoy dinner at Tarrer Inn and the show, Star Spangled Summer May-Haw at the May Haw Theater in Colquitt, GA. We ate heartily at the buffet. The show was short comedy vignettes which took place on various small stages placed around the room and kept us laughing all evening.

Thanks to Betty Ann Watkins for planning these outings. Those of us who have gone agree this is a terrific way to spend time with each other AND we want to keep having them.
