PASTOR’S COLUMN
So will it be with the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is per-ishable, it is raised imperishable; it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glo-ry; it is sown in weakness, it is raised in power; it is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. (1 Corinthians 15:42-44, NIV)
For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands. (2 Corinthians 5:1, NIV)
Resurrection is fascinating. I mean, it’s not like the popular depictions of eternal life or Heaven in literature or the movies. And, it’s much more fas-cinating than how it is often taught in church. In the ancient world, it was taken for granted that life after death did not offer much hope, much mean-ing or consolation. Death was final, even if it was possible that existence carried on beyond the grave. Whether it was the Hebrew She’ol or the Greek Hades or whatever version of the underworld a culture happened to hold. While some sects of Judaism hinted at resurrection, it was Jesus who embodied it and revealed it, with Paul giving it definition and shape. Two of the most important teachings on Resurrection are found in Paul’s letters to the Corinthians, specifically 1 Corinthians 15 and 2 Corinthians 4:7 – 5:10.
First, Jesus is the prototype for resurrection. He is the only one who went through the grave with a temporal body and then raised with an eternal body. We read in the gospels that Jesus’ body was not immediately recog-nizable. He could appear and disappear. Yet, Jesus had a body. He could eat. He could be touched. And, even though Jesus’ body was raised immor-tal, it still bore the scars of the cross. Resurrection means that there is con-tinuity between this life and the next life.
Second, what happened to Jesus on the Third Day (or, the first day of the week) is our destiny for the last day. Paul makes it clear that our destiny, too, is resurrection. Going to heaven when we die is something we can ex-pect, but it is not the goal. God’s goal is that there is no longer a distinction between heaven and earth. New Creation is the goal, and that we are to be a part of it.
Finally, we can be certain that we will have a body fit for eternity. It is one that will not tire out, wear down, get sick or perish. It is one that will equip us to inhabit eternity. Like Jesus’ body, it will bear the scars of this life. Yet, it will bear the scars from the perspective of God’s perfect plan.
Easter is a time of hope. It’s a time when we look to Jesus and look to what God has in store for us. May we celebrate it with joy and eager expecta-tion!
Grace and peace, Tim
