CHURCH FINANCES Your financial support of the church is important to our continuing minis-tries. As a church we will spend only what is necessary for the maintenance of the church. We will be good stewards of our resources in anticipation that things may get tight. However, we also know that you have proven faithful in giving. Please mail your contributions to PO Box 839 Ruther-fordton, NC 28139. You may address them to Debbie Turner’s attention for confidentiality. You can also take advantage of our online giving at www.firstbaptistrutherfordton.com. This is through PayPal. If you prefer to give online, you should be aware that there will be a small percentage of your donation taken out by PayPal to be used as a service fee. Please know that all your contributions are greatly appreciated!

POSSIBLE MINISTRY OPPORTUNITY If you are in need of a face mask and are especially vulnerable to this pandemic, such as medical/health workers, senior adults, and of compromised health, the federal Centers for Disease Control has approved

the use of fabric masks. Beth Heffner has the CDC approved pattern and specific materials to make several masks. What is great about this mask is that it can be washed and reused time and again! If you are in need of a mask and do not have access to masks, please contact Beth (828) 980-2761 and she will make one for you free of charge. If you sew and would like to make some for your family and others, Beth would be glad to share the pattern with you.

BLOOD DRIVE

The Red Cross is in critical need of blood donors to offset the toll the dis-ease has taken. Although COVID-19 continues to spread worldwide, blood drives are still being held throughout the nation because the need for blood has not diminished. I will be hosting a blood drive at our church on Friday, June 5. The Red Cross has stated that they will minimize risk and will im-plement precautions to ensure safety. If you are interested in donating, please contact me at [email protected] with your name, phone number and any questions you may have. Thank you for your support! -Melea Jones

PASTOR’S COLUMN

When he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was in turmoil, asking, "Who is this?" The crowds were saying, "This is the prophet Jesus from Nazareth in Galilee." (Matthew 21:10-11, NRSV)

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiv-ing let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus…Not that I am refer-ring to being in need; for I have learned to be content with whatever I have. I know what it is to have little, and I know what it is to have plenty. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being well-fed and of going hungry, of having plenty and of being in need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. (Philippians 4:6-7, 11-13, NRSV)

A few moments ago, I left my mother’s new apartment and drove by the church to pick up my laptop to write this column at home. For just a moment, I glanced down the street at our beautiful town. All was quiet. The street lights brightened the facades of our old buildings. At first glance, it appeared to be a beautiful night. It appeared to be a night like any other. I’ve walked our streets at night in humid summer evenings, the cool spring and fall nights, and in the cold winter. I’ve walked them on clear nights, rainy nights, and in the snow. They are all beautiful.

However, this night was not the same. In the past few weeks, businesses have closed or modified operations. The streets are empty during the day. And there is this invisible threat – a virus – that lurks in the shadows. We’re all trying to avoid it. And, in doing so, things have changed.

When I think about the changes of the past few weeks, I cannot help but think of the things that I miss. We are supposed to be getting ready for the Final Four this weekend, after two weekends of enjoying basketball. We are supposed to be watching baseball’s opening week. And, we are supposed to be welcoming spring, warm weather and such with joy. We are supposed to be preparing for Holy Week.

But what I miss most has nothing to do with these big things. Rather, I miss my routine. I miss walking to Main Street coffee on Wednesday afternoon with Natalie to get our coffee before supper. I miss ordering the breakfast burrito from Bee Happy, as I do once a week. I miss walking to Hair Kutters and getting a trim. I miss seeing each of you on Sundays and Wednesdays, seeing the church full, eating dinner on Wednesday nights, peaking in at the children’s choir and talking with you. I miss the high-fives from the kids. I miss the little things more so than I do sports, big Easter celebrations and the like.

When Jesus entered Jerusalem on the week of his eventual death, things were different. His teaching in Galilee, his ministry among the poor, his miracles, and his following were all coming to a point of no return. When Paul wrote to the Philippian Church, he knew, too, that things may never be the same again. I don’t write these words to be discouraging. Rather, I want to acknowledge that perhaps some of the uneasiness we feel is the grief of loss for the little things we took for granted. We’ve had to change our routines and our habits. We’ve had to distance from each other. We’ve had to modify our lives on the spur of the moment. We grieve that loss.

Yet, we must go forward. Though Jesus knew that he was riding into Jerusalem for his death, by the beginning of the following week, he would conquer the grave. And, Paul, though imprisoned, would share the message of Jesus’ resurrection with the nations of the world. Perhaps things will be different. Perhaps not. But on the other side of COVID-19 is resurrection, life and hope. Let’s grieve the change, but embrace God’s good future.

Grace and peace,

Tim

All glory, laud, and honor to Thee, Redeemer, King, To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring. Thou are the King of Israel, Thou David’s royal Son, Who in the Lord’s name comest, the King and blessed One!

The company of angels are praising Thee on high; And we with all creation in chorus make reply, The people of the Hebrews with palms before Thee went; Our praise and prayer and anthems before Thee we present.

To Thee, before Thy passion, they sang their hymns of praise; To Thee, now high exalted, our melody we raise. Thou didst accept their praises, accept the praise we bring, Who in all good delightest, Thou good and gracious King! Invocation Beth Heffner
