figures were up at Rs.622.30 crore and Rs.1620.82 crorerespectively. Despite achieving all the physical targets, the lower realization is primarily because of lower globalalumina prices and importantly, a rising rupee.

In the production front, the Company achieved higheralumina production of 3,87,800 tonnes, compared to3,58,100 tonnes in the first quarter of the previous year. But the metal production was slightly down at 88,550tonnes, compared to 88,584 tonnes achieved duringthe corresponding period of the previous fiscal.

Extraordinary ContentNalco sponsored 15-minute Oriya TV serial ‘Bhinna Manisha’which is being telecast in Doordarshan, is a uniqueprogramme. The serial presents the real life accounts ofordinary people with extraordinary attitude, therebymotivating them and encouraging others. Besides, the twoadvertisements of Nalco aired during the serial are excellent. In one of the ads, it shows a cat entering a room and lookinginto a glass jar. As a result, the fish swimming in the jar fallson the floor, out of fright. The cat then picks up the fish withits mouth and drops it back into the water in the jar. Then thecat kisses the fish from outside the jar. This symbolizes the

extraordinary attitude, which that ordinary cat epitomizes. Iam sure such ads and serials would help in developing apositive attitude among the viewers and contribute towardsformation of a healthy society.I would request you to increase the duration of the serial to30 minutes.

I would like to share some of my thoughts on threeprimary issues concerning our Company, which makeme restless all the time.

First, let’s look into our system of working. As you mayrealize, there is a yawning difference between ‘systemof working’ and the ‘system that works’. In all fast-growing organizations, the system takes care ofeverything. Nothing is individual-centric. People aremere facilitators. Hope, you will fully agree with me,when I say that with changing times, our working systemhas become old and obsolete. What was prevalent inyester-years are perhaps no more relevant today. Rather, those are becoming deterrents. We must do away withall those systems, which do not facilitate to achieve ourtasks and targets. I am sure, most of us, by now, knowthe strengths and weaknesses in our systems. If we canplug the loopholes and overhaul our systems, I am surethe right system shall take care of most of our problems. As employees, it is but natural, to be concerned aboutindividual promotion, perks and benefits. But, it is theorganization that is the source of all such sustenance. And the truth is, unless we transcend the orbit of routinetasks and enter the higher orbit of introducing innovativepractices, inculcating systems in lieu of ad-hoc practicesand try to add value to everyday jobs, the future maynot be brighter.

Secondly, I feel that a sense of complacency has creptinto our system. Although it may sound contradictory, somewhere along the line, our profits have been our

SHRI C.R. PRADHAN ONTHE 3 PRIMARY ISSUES CONCERNING OUR COMPANY

undoing. Perhaps, there is a pervasive feeling of inertia, instead of buoyancy, in the Company and this can be adangerous trend. This trend needs to be stalled as soonas possible. For this, we must ensure that employeesare motivated towards sel f -actualizat ion andorganizational goals.

Lastly, I would like to sound a note of caution. As youknow, we have been quite benefited by the favourablemarket conditions. No doubt, we achieved a net profitof Rs.446.66 crore during the 1st quarter of presentfiscal. But this is 28% less than what we had achievedlast year during the corresponding three months. Thisis primarily because of lower global alumina prices andimportantly, a rising rupee. Come to think of it, thishappened to us despite achieving all the physical targetsduring 1st quarter of 2007-08.

No doubt, Nalco is built on strong fundamentals. Ourslogan has been: ordinary people, extraordinary attitude. And as you know, the difference between ordinary andextraordinary is that little extra. And that little extra in thecollective attitude of more than 7000 diligent anddedicated workforce of Nalco can bring about a world ofdifference. What we need to do is to muster our collectivewill and wisdom. Anything we save, anything we generate,or anything we create – tangible or intangible – must go along way in ensuring our progress and prosperity, andmake us the worthy citizens of our country. Through Nalco,we have all the opportunities to serve the Nation. On thisauspicious occasion, let us resolve to do so.

Hindalco Industries, the country’s largest aluminiumproducer, reported a flat net profit of Rs.602.9 crore in thefirst quarter of 2007-08 fiscal, compared to Rs.601.5 crorein the corresponding period a year ago. This performancecan be attributed to lower prices for alumina, which offsetthe gain from rise in metal output.

Theysaid aluminium prices, which were stable in recent months(while other metals were on record highs), are expected torise in coming quarters which would have a positive impacton Hindalco’s profitability. China’s exports of aluminium products were likely to fallsharply in the July-September quarter because of the endof some tax rebates, industry sources said. Hair Loss ?

Health

ARE YOU TENSE ABOUT

Spending sleepless nights over a receding hairline?Excessive hair loss, resulting in hair thinning, is asymptom of baldness. Also known as Alopecia, baldness refers to hair loss or absence of hair, themost common form being Progressive Hair ThinningCondition called Androgenic Alopecia or Male PatternBaldness (MPB). This is the cause of hair loss in almost90% of men of which 35% are in their 30’s.

Symptoms of MPBExcessive loss of hair (loss well in excess of normal 50to100 strands per day)

Hairline recedes from the front

Bald patch on the top of the scalp but no hair loss from the sides

Factors Contributing to Hair Loss

Hormonal and hereditary factors mainly lead to hair loss. When themale hormone Testosterone (responsible for hair growth) is convertedinto DHT, it causes hair loss on the scalp, especially from top and front.

Heredity and genetics also play a major role that affects, at what ageand to which extent baldness can be caused to an individual.

Poor blood circulation to scalps can result in baldness, as each hair fitsin a cavity in the skin called a follicle and when it is deprived of blood,it gradually shrinks over time and cannot nourish hair properly.

Nicotine intake through smoking sensitizes hair follicles to the effects ofhormones leading to increased hair loss.

High levels of mental stress can also cause and aggravate hair loss.

Dandruff and improper hair care can hinder necessary circulationof nutrition to the hair and can lead to hair loss.

Other factors such as diet, medications, natural hormones etc. cancause temporary hair loss. Once the underlying cause is correctlyidentified and eliminated, the hair may grow back. All hair folliclesare formed while the baby is in the uterus. No new follicle is producedafter birth. Each follicle is capable of producing 20 to 30 hairs in alifetime, with each hair having a life cycle of 3 to 5 years.

Although there is no cure for common baldness, but proper care, diet andhabits can minimize hair loss. As hair is mainly constituted of a protein calledkeratin, it is important to take enough protein in the diet to prevent hair damageor loss.
