THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING HUMBLE RICH OR POOR, WHICH IS BETTER

Deacon Chuck Lanham

Beatrice Kaufman, the wife of playwright George S. Kaufman once quipped “I’ve been rich and I’ve been poor. Rich is bet-

ter.”1 This sentiment is undoubtedly shared by many for we quite obstinately hold to the belief, despite evidence to the contrary, that

wealth can indeed purchase greater happiness. Studies conducted of people whose fortunes dramatically changed have consistently

shown that whether the change was considered positive (winning an enormous sum of money) or negative (accidental dismember-

ment or physical impairment) one’s level of personal happiness returned to prior levels in very short order.2

Rich or poor, true happiness comes from within, from that interior place reserved for you and God, your soul, your spirit. When

Jesus told his disciples “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven”3 we instinctively apply a temporal con-

notation of wealth or poverty to what he taught. And in doing so we find ourselves rebelling, dismissing any thought that abject

poverty is the only way to reach the kingdom of heaven. When asked by a young man what more he had to do to gain eternal life,

Jesus told him, “’If you wish to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then

come, follow me.’ When the young man heard this statement, he went away sad, for he had many possessions.”4 That response leads

us to believe that we must give away our possessions in order to attain a place in heaven. But I would suggest that we, as we too

often do, have missed the point, or more precisely, the points.

Jesus commands us to be “poor in spirit” which calls for us to fill our souls with humility, to be “humble in spirit.” This re-

quires us to recognize and acknowledge that we are imperfect, broken creatures before God.

A rich spirit is a proud, self-important spirit, full of one’s self, with little or no regard for one’s Creator. And this leads us to

consider the difficulty that the young man who had many possessions faced. There is a strong correlation between interior and exte-

rior pride for the greater and more abundant our possessions – those things that we possess – the poorer our spirituality and the

poorer our relationship with God. It is axiomatic that when we are obsessed by our possessions we lose sight of all that is of greater

importance, our souls. Like the young man, our possessions will soon possess and consume us and like that young man we will

walk away saddened by the necessity to give it all away to the poor.

Whether rich or poor, it is in kneeling before God with great humility that will be the measure upon which we will be judged.

Anyone who humbly asks God for mercy will receive it. The difference will be in the degree of difficulty one faces in becoming

“poor in spirit.” As Mary proclaimed, “The hungry he has filled with good things; the rich he has sent away empty.”5

Lenten Observances

Lent began on Ash Wednesday, February 18th. All are able to receive

ashes (you don’t have to be baptized or confirmed, etc.) Ash Wednes-

day is also a day of fasting and abstinence from eating meat.

Here’s more information from the USCCB.org website concerning the

observance of fasting and abstinence:

Both fasting and abstinence are obligatory on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Absti-

nence from meat is further required on the Fridays during Lent, unless a solemnity falls on a

Friday.

Abstinence

Abstinence laws consider that meat comes only from animals such as chickens, cows,

sheep or pigs --- all of which live on land. Birds are also considered meat. Abstinence does not

include meat juices and liquid foods made from meat. Thus, such foods as chicken broth, con-

somme, soups cooked or flavored with meat, meat gravies or sauces, as well as seasonings or

condiments made from animal fat are technically not forbidden. However, moral theologians

have traditionally taught that we should abstain from all animal-derived products (except foods

such as gelatin, butter, cheese and eggs, which do not have any meat taste).

Fish are a different category of animal. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians,

reptiles, (cold-blooded animals) and shellfish are permitted.

The norms concerning abstinence from meat are binding upon members from age 14 on-

wards.

Fasting

There are many forms of fasting. The norm consists of eating only one full meal each day;

two smaller meals may also be taken, as needed, but not to equal a full meal. Some Catholics

may elect to observe a literal all-day fast, or give up particular foods or drinks in addition to

their abstinence from meat. The norms on fasting are obligatory from age 18 until age 59. When

fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may also be taken, but not

to equal a full meal.

perishable food, toiletries and clothing. Deacon Richard Ramm 787-8839

Just Say “Hello”! By Carolyn Smith

When you come to mass at St. Albert’s, does someone say “hello” to you? Do you feel

welcome? Do you say hello to your neighbor wherever you sit in church?

If you see someone from St. Albert’s at the grocery store do you say “hello” or head in

the opposite direction?

It doesn’t matter if you can’t remember their name—they probably can’t remember

yours either! Maybe you kind of look familiar but they don’t know why or from where. Say

“hello” unless you are already cruising down aisle 14 in the op-

posite direction. Even if they aren’t from St. Albert’s and a to-

tal stranger, you may just make someone’s day.

If a regular mass attendee returns after being away for a

couple of weeks, do you say “hello” and tell them you’ve

missed seeing them in their usual spot? For some of us, it is

very difficult to get out of our comfort zone and try something

different. Perhaps some of us will never leave the safety of our

comfort zone and that’s perfectly fine. Seeing the smile on

someone’s face when you greet them may convince you to

leave your comfort zone if only for a few seconds.

You may want to sit quietly and say “hello” to the Lord or His Blessed Mother and tell

them about your week. You may light a candle and pray for a special intention. If you prefer

to worship quietly in this way, please continue to do so! But, maybe next week your smile and

your “hello” would be just what someone at St. Albert’s needs to feel welcome. I hope that you

give it a try.
