FIRST UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

RICHMOND, MICHIGAN

October 2017

Pastor Denise

Dear Ones,

Last week in worship Glen Porrett prayed an eloquent prayer giving thanks for the bounty of our fields. It really has been an amazing year for farming and gardening in SE Michigan. But truth be told, Glen prays the same prayer of thanksgiving every year at harvest time. It always touches my heart. Glen is grateful for the earth and its bounty and receives it like the gift that it is and says “Thank you, God.” I am grateful to be the pastor of this small town rural church where people have a close relationship with the land and who know that harvest is a gift of earth.

Fall is stewardship time at 1st UCC. We are busy building the budget that makes our ministry together possible. We do a lot of number-crunching but really, the whole thing runs on grace and gratitude.

Last week in worship I asked you to talk about two things with each other:

Why do you give to support our church? Who taught you to be generous?

As you fill out your pledge card and the time and talent sheet, think about these questions again.

Generous people have grateful hearts. They know that all of life is a gift. They say and pray, “Thanks!” Because of all they have received – and maybe because they were just brought up that way, or had a good teacher or role model – they share the gifts they have received with others, including their church.

Why do you give to our church? Is it your way of saying thank you to God? Is it your way of saying thank you to those who have gone before, to those who share in this ministry today? Maybe it’s a pledge of gratitude and hope for our future and for those who will walk through our door one day. Or a pledge of gratitude and com-mitment to our community and our neighbors near and far who need our love and care. Why do you give to our church?

I’m so grateful that you do. Love to all,

October Song Circle

If you wish to make a monetary donation instead of shopping, please consider a gift card to Kroger or Meijer which can be dropped off at the St. Augustine Parish Office in an envelope addressed to the food pantry, or leave me a message

on my pantry line (727-5215 ext. 124) and I would be happy to pick them up. Returned items may be dropped off at the parish office as well during normal business hours: 9:00 am—12:00 pm/1:30 pm -5:00 pm).

Thank you for your continued support. Michele,

Richmond Community Food Pantry

Song Circle will meet Sunday, October 8. Potluck supper at 5:30, singing from 6:30 – 8pm. Everybody’s invited – you could even bring a friend! Here’s how the Song Circle works. We sing mostly from a book called Rise Up Singing. It’s has over 1,000 songs to choose from – musicals, old timey songs, popular songs

from many eras, folk songs, protest songs, silly songs, love songs, faith songs. We put our chairs in a circle and take turns

choosing songs. Pastor Denise, sometimes Rose, and others accompany the songs on guitar or autoharp or even banjo. We have fun singing together and sometimes telling stories. Eating together, sing-ing and laughing and talking about our lives is a great way to build community. Come and join the circle!

For the month of October, the Richmond Community Food Pantry will be collecting items to fill our Thanksgiving bags. I know it seems early, but this will allow us enough time to

gather and plan for what we need before we distribute the bags. Your food donations will be distributed to our commu-nity area families in need.

We Need the Following: List of items needed include: stuffing mix (turkey, chicken, or cornbread) boxed potatoes rice (1lb. bags) paper towel cream of mushroom soup tea, coffee, and creamer desert mixes (cake, muffin, etc./frosting) Jell-O (large box) gravy jar/can (turkey, chicken, brown or mushroom) condiments (pickles, olives, salad dressing, mustard ketchup, mayonnaise, etc.)

Coming Soon…Holiday Gift Auction Our Annual Holiday Gift Auction is coming up on Sunday, November 19 after service. If you have never experienced the Gift Auction, make this year YOUR year. Please consider donating a new gift item. In the past, there have been gift baskets, homemade baked items, quilts, children’s gifts, painted glassware and handmade wooden items. We have also

had services offered such as baby sitting and wrapping Christmas gifts. There will be a finger food potluck, so please bring your favorite to share. This is so you have the stamina to raise up your number and win the bid. We also have our very own church famous auctioneer, Glen Porrett. Many of you have heard him, and he makes us laugh every year!

If you are or have a student who needs community service hours, we have always given four hours of credit for each student who helps us as a runner. Please invite your friends and family to join us! Everyone is welcome to join in this fun time! Sue Weinert and Kim Schrote

Sunday, October 15

In addition to the approval of the 2018 Budget, the Church Council would also like to recommend a revision to the Church's Constitution to re-duce it’s size from nine to six

council members. Also we need to fill some council vacancies depending on the size of the council. Please plan on attending the meeting after the service on October 15.

We're having the First UCC Christmas Tree Sale Fundraiser again this year!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Planning anyway... We're going to have the Christ-mas Tree Sale Fundraiser again this year at the church parking lot. We looked at last year's sale and adjusted the order to elimi-nate Black Hill Spruce which seemed to drop needles too soon. We've added more Fraser Fir trees which are beautiful trees; they are soft to the touch and don't seem to lose their needles much at all. And, we have shortened the hours that we are open for sales. The trees have been ordered and we're on our way. We welcome any suggestions and look forward to a fun fundraiser! Hope you can volunteer some time dur-ing the sale. Thank you!

Neighbors in Need Helps Make Another World Possible The Neighbors in Need offering which we will receive on Sunday, October 1, sup-ports the United Church of Christ’s ministries of justice and compassion throughout the United States. Two-thirds of the offering is used by the

UCC’s Justice and Witness Ministries to fund a wide array of local and national justice initiatives. It continues strong policy advocacy work on issues such as voting rights, immigration, health care, hate crimes, civil liberties and envi-

ronmental justice. Neighbors in Need offering also supports our American Indian United Church of Christ members. An offering envelope will be in the Sunday bulletin.

Bread for the World Sunday, October 15

Go therefore into the main streets, and invite everyone you find to the wedding banquet.

—Matthew 22:9

Bread for the World Sunday is an opportunity to join others in praying for those who struggle with hunger and to rededicate ourselves to efforts that help end hunger. The Mission committee will have delicious loaves of bread for sale and all proceeds will be sent to the Bread for the World organization.

For the past several years, this collection is what our congre-gation has supported instead of the CROP Walk. Also, this year our prayers are needed for the South Sudan where they are suffering from a dev-astating famine, and famine also threatens Nigeria, Soma-lia and Yemen. Drought is spreading through other parts of Africa.

Please buy a loaf of bread and know that you are working to end hunger world wide. Our faith is in Christ who makes all things new, and we place our hope in God’s vision of a world without hunger.

KIDS Against Hunger—Saturday, November 18 Do you know what it is like to feel hungry? What does it feel like when you missed lunch, haven’t eaten since breakfast, it is supper time and you are starving? What must a person feel like when they haven’t had a meal in days? You can be a part of a group of people that will help STOP hunger. On Saturday morning,

November 18, come to Trinity Lutheran Church to help fill 10,000 bags with rice, dry soy, veggies and vitamin powder. In an assembly line process these bags are filled, sealed and put into boxes to be shipped locally, in the U.S, or around the world—wherever there are hungry people in need of assistance.

Please consider representing our church at this ecumenical event with Trinity Lutheran and First Methodist Church people. This is one of the most rewarding and fun mornings you could be a part of. Regis-tration information will be available very soon, or talk to Kathi Miller (586-727-1726).

A Driving Need

Hundreds of older and disabled neighbors in our community need help getting to doctor appoint-ments, the grocery store or other essential errands. Being able to get food and medical care can make it possible for them to re-main in their own homes for as long as possible.

The Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers program is in need of volunteers who can provide transportation in the local area. We espe-cially need drivers who are available during daytime business hours—mornings and afternoons. If you have just a couple hours a month that you can give to someone in need, you can make a huge difference in the life of a struggling neighbor. You tell us what days, times and areas are convenient for you and we call you with specific ap-

pointments that meet these criteria. If you are free, say “yes.” If you’re not, simply decline and we will call you another time. Even one more ride a year will make a big difference to the person who needs it! Please call our office today at 586-757-5551. (Learn more about our work at www.ivcinfo.org)

Pastor Denise’s Office Hours and Pastoral Care I plan my week to be in Richmond on either Tuesday or Thursday, and Sunday. It’s possible that the days may move a bit as I respond to various needs that arise, but for the most part, that’s when I’ll be in town. If possible, please plan for committees to meet on one of those days or

evenings. Thanks so much! If there are situations that arise in which you’d like pastoral care, please call to let me know. In the old days, hospitals and rehab/nursing facilities used to inform pas-tors when one of their flock was admitted. That doesn’t happen anymore.

You can reach me directly by calling my cell phone—

630-297-1740 or call the church office and leave a message with Helen or on the answer-ing machine. I’m always happy to receive your calls.

Pastor Denise

If you are aware of someone who should be included in our prayers, please call the church office or speak with Pastor Denise.
