PriortopickingupAdventureRidingasahobby,myfavoriteextracurricularac<vitywasfishing.GrowingupIfishedalmosteverydayatapondnearmyhouseandmoreremotelywithfriendsandfamilyalmosteveryweekend.MovingouttoIdahofromIndianawhenIwas17reallyexpandedmyfishinghorizons,openingupseveralnewmethodsoffishingandawholenewarrayoffishtocatch…butthedistancesinvolvedmadeittougherformetogetout.WhenIstartedgeHnginvolvedinriding,itseemedlikeagreatwaytogetwhereIwasgoing,butthecomplexityofthetackleIwasusedtopackingmadeitdifficult.EventuallyIjustgaveupfishingalltogethertofocusonriding.

Theproblemis,the<mewespendonmotorcyclestakesusbysomanygreatfishingwaters,itseemsashametomisstheopportunity.TheproblemwasthatIwasridingtofish–justusingthebikeastransporta<on,whichdoesn’tworkpar<cularlywellwhenyou’rehaulinga9’6”flyrodthatbreaksdownintotwosec<ons,waders,boots,afloattube,vest,fins,andeverythingyouneedtocamp.It’ssimplynotprac<caltopackthatway.IeventuallybrokedownandboughtaStowawayflyrodfromCabela’sandcarriedthatonseveralrides.Ionlyuseditsporadically,butIalwayshadagreat<megeHngoutonthestreamforafewminutesaUeraride.Mymoveover<metowardlighterandfasterridingvirtuallyeliminatedmychancetofish.

IrecentlydiscoveredTenkarafishingwhilebrowsinganonlineshop,anditinstantlystruckmehowwellitwouldworkwithmotorcycling.TenkaraisaformofJapaneseflyfishingwhichusesatelescopingrod,levelfishingrod,short<ppetandnoreel,whichtendstobetheheaviestandmostcomplexpieceoffishingequipmentinanyone’sfishingarsenal.IpickedupaDiawaKiyosefromwww.tenkarabum.comforaround$130.Therodcollapsesto15.5”,weighs2.3ozandis11’long.Coupledwitha12’lineanda4’<ppet,Ihave

I’mprecyimpressedwithTenkarafishing,butit’snottheend‐all,be‐alloffishingoffabike.Is<llhavemyCabela’sStowawayflyrod,andit’sagreatop<onforfishingoffthebikethatisquiteabitmoreflexiblethanmyTenkaraoufitintermsofcas<ngrange.This,coupledwithafewsmallflies,couldkeepyouentertainedforquiteawhileonalongevening.Theypackdowntoabout20”withtheincludedcarryingcaseandonlyweighacoupleofpoundswitheverythingyou’dneed.Ifoundthisroddidn’tcastascleanlyasmytwopiecehandmaderod,butitwass<llveryserviceableanddideverythingIaskedofit.Thereareotherop<onsforpack‐downflyrodsoutthere,butIdon’tthinkanymatchthepricetoqualityra<oaswellasthissetupdoes.

Spinfishermanhaveitevenbecer!Thereareseveralpackdownspinningrodsonthemarketthatcanbehadforunder$40.I’veusedtheseinthepastandfoundthequalitytobeques<onable,butforabriefdiversionaUerdinnerandbeforedark,theycouldbeveryentertaining.BothEagleClawandShakespearemaketelescopingrodsthatareveryaffordablealthoughyoutendtogetwhatyoupayfor.L.L.BeanandOkumabuildhigher‐endpackdownrodsthatcanbehadfor$60‐$200,dependingonthemodel.Again,afewspinners,spoons,hooksandsplitshotareallthatwouldbenecessarytocatchafewfishforfunordinner.


Idecidedtowritethisar<cletospreadaliclebitofinforma<onaboutwhat’soutthereandtogetpeoplethinkingaboutthepossibili<eswehavetofishwhileriding.Inthesmallamountof<meI’vespentonthebikethissummerI’vebeenaroundsomeabsolutelyworld‐classfishingwaterandIcanrememberliterallyhundredsofmissedopportuni<estowetalineoverthelastfewyears.Ithinkthebiggestandmostimportantthingishavingthepropermindset:Packingahugetackleboxwithhalfadozenrodsandwadersisn’tprac<caltodofromamotorcycle,butwithonerodandafewbasicluresorflies,youcanopenupmanyeveningsoffunandcanbringnewlifeintothesport.Andmaybesavealicleweightonpackingfoodtoo.
