Helping those in need at ThanksgivingBy Luke Anderson

Last month, Mounties collected food items for our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. It is a time when we as a school help people who are in need and don’t have enough food.

Our goal this year was to try to feed 70 families and each homeroom was assigned to gather at least 35 donated food items, such as beans, corn, and mashed potatoes to achieve this goal.

Under the direction of Ms. Lokar and Mr. Rivera, Campus Ministry packed all the food items into bags, and students delivered everything to St. Nicholas of Tolentine in the South Bronx.

Even though we did not collect enough to get Super Bowl Monday off, this was an amazing opportunity that we do each year to better people’s lives and for them to have a pleasant holiday.

SPECIAL REPORTNovember/December 2018 Vol. I Issue 2

The seventh Legends of The Mount induction ceremony and dinner was held on the Thursday evening, of November 15th at the New York Athletic Club in Pelham, NY.

Even a winter storm couldn't stop alumni, their families and friends from celebrating the newest Legends.

2018 Mount Legends:● Charles J. Casamento '63 ● Brian J. Clark '76 ● Br. John G. Herrmann, FMS● Angelo Mozilo '56 ● Mario Valentini '69 ● Alison Zaino

Congratulations to our own Coach V!

Thanks to everyone who came out in support of the event, despite the unfortunate weather but also to all those who made it possible.

A NEW BATCH OF MOUNT LEGENDS

ABOUT THE LEGENDS OF THE MOUNT

Initiated in 2002, the Legends of The Mount began as a way to recognize alumni and friends who have made significant contributions to the school and to society at large, and whose accomplishments, affiliations, and careers have honored the legacy of excellence at Mount Saint Michael Academy.

The Legends of The Mount status is awarded to alumni and friends as deemed appropriate by the Board of Directors and school leadership. It is conferred upon distinguished alumni and friends who have had remarkable success in their professional lives, contributed to the community while reflecting the values of St. Marcellin Champagnat, and who have demonstrated unparalleled loyalty and service to Mount Saint Michael Academy.

Coach V’s plaque that will go on the Legends Wall gallery.

Alumni, family and friends celebrate with Coach V.

Mounties bring Christmas joy to children at the Mercy CenterBy Ameer Khan ‘20(Written after turning 16 on said date of the party)

We collected toys for about 50 kids in the after school program at the Mercy Center. The party was set up into two groups, first was the older group who were somewhere between 3rd and 6th grade. The second group were the smaller children who were probably in 1st or 2nd grade.

The children who don’t have a lot, were eager to get a present. After they joined the line to meet “Santa” friends showed each other their gifts and were eager to try them out (if they didn’t require batteries).

My job was to set up snacks before each group came and manage the songs with the help of my friend Jailyn. I also took pictures to document the event and have something to include in this article.

I watched as my friends and schoolmates tried to have a conversation with the kids and entertain them a little. One little girl was smart enough to recognize the same “Santa” from last year.

RETREAT: Should I Go or Nah?By Luke Anderson

When Campus Ministry sponsors retreats for students to go on, many wonder if they should go or not. The retreats that they have are fun, amazing, and interesting. The reasons that the retreats are this way is because you meet new friends, you spend time getting to know one another, do some really fun activities, and learn a couple of life lessons.

How it works: After school, we get on the Mount bus and go to Esopus, New York, spend one night and return to the school around 3pm the following day (A day and a half total). If you think our campus is big, think again, the retreat center sits on 120 acres in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

It has beautiful outdoor spaces including playing fields, a chapel in the woods, being near and on the riverfront, and trails to explore. There are dorms, a dining hall, a rec room, a gym and even a swimming pool!

It doesn’t matter whether you are religious or not, everyone is welcome to participate. The next time you see an announcement about a Retreat, grab your sleeping bag and go, you won’t regret it.

Got questions, see Ms. Lokar or Mr. Rivera.
