GLASURIT IS

a 131 years old paint manufacturer founded in 1888 running the biggest paint production site in Europe founded 1903 in Münster.

a pioneer reg. development and production of different paint technologies (Nitrocellulose, Synthetic, Waterborne etc.) – check Glasurit Handbook fr. 1936

offering the authentic color of historic vehicles in actual paint technology (2K-Topcoat and Clearcoat, waterborne and solventborne basecoat)

offering special paint systems for historic vehicles giving the right look (surface structure, gloss, aging effect etc.) with the best high quality products of the actual product portfolio.

Raw material changes challenge paint formulation

MAIN COMPONENTS OF PAINTRAW MATERIAL CHANGES HAVE A BIG IMPACT FOR PAINT ASPECTS ON HISTORIC VEHICLES

Raw material production stopped / cancelled due to legal requirements (e.g. REACH) or econonic decisions. All components of paint concerned.- Actually: Chromate containing pigments banned- Many solvents banned / limited: Xylene, Toluene, Benzol- VOC legislation limits solvent amount / mostly excempt solution

for historic vehicles - Discontinuation of pigments have a huge impact on mixing

formulas

Shelflife of paint is limited. Any new paint means a combination of old substance with “freshly” produced material.

Color matching can be limited due availability of effect pigments/metallics and/or metamerism.

A full paint system (Primer, Putty, Fillers, Topcoat etc.) with old technology is possible and extensive but follows the same logic as mentioned above.

YOUTH AND SKILLS ACTIVITIES

Reconstruction of the 1922 Citroën B2 10 HP, modèle K1 in cooperation with vocational schools, art museum students and industry partners

In total 160 students/pupils – 40 teachers/professors and supporters – 50.000 hours – Participation of French Glasurit team – old fragments analysed - authentic colour, gloss, logo reproduced with 2K-Topcoat in „adjusted“ product mix and application system

Body builder in Straßbourg working on historic vehicles in the traditional way awarded as „Art Master“ by the French ministry of culture. Prerequisite is to give his know-how and business to his young successor. (élève). Involved in skills preservation group at FFVE.

We like to promote him a „lighthouse“ to preserve skills. Glasurit paint used with „specific“ paint systems.

SKILLS UK – Partnership with FBHVC

First participation in the „Federation Village“ at the Classic Motor Show. Many contacts with clubs, bodyshops, insurances , car enthusiasts etc.

Contact with FBHVC Skills Academy @ Bicester Heritage. 3rd visit on Monday 11/11. Work on skills shortage in classic and collision business.

COLLABORATION WITH INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS AND EUROPEAN COMMISSION

Getting a project recognised by UNESCO:

- Patronage of an event - 8 steps how to go ahead published on the UNESCO Webapge,Culture commission stays a support party in the project (letters, assistance in contacts, communication and explanation of why the support to the project) (IMPORTANT! – clarification and explanation of the project to UNESCO on theapplication has to be prepared carefully and well thought through)

- World heritage List - Outstanding Universal Value means cultural and/or natural significance which is so exceptional as to transcend national boundaries and to be of common importance for present and future generations of all humanity. (Detroit FORD Piquette Avenue application failed)

- Intangible Cultural Heritage Lists - An intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is a practice, representation, expression, knowledge, or skill, as well as the instruments, objects, artifacts, and cultural spaces that are considered by UNESCO to be part of a place's cultural heritage

- Memory of the World list- UNESCO established the Programme in 1992. Impetus came originally from a growing awareness of the parlous state of preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage in various parts of the world. (Concrete of Gyon, Hungary)

It identifies the overarching messages from our members and puts them across to opinion formers and decision makers.They have a membership of 6.3 million volunteers, trustees, members and staff.

The largest member is the National Trust.

For over half a century the Transport Trust has campaigned for Britain’s immensely important transport heritage in all its forms, on land, in the air and on the water. It focuses on past successes, current activities and the future needs of transport restoration & preservation.

Significant Transport heritage sites are marked by erecting a Transport Trust Heritage Plaque or “Red Wheel” on the physical site.

Der Goldene Klassiker (The golden classic)

Award given annually by the well known German historic vehicle magazine Auto BildKlassik.

Award is given in different categories.

2019 the readers of the magazine voted for their number one in the category„Innovation“ the German initiative called AGHF (Arbeitsgruppe HistorischeFahrzeuge – Historic Vehicle Working Group)

Founded in January 2019 by the following Clubs/Federations:

ADAC, ASC, AvD, BHLD, DAVC, DEUVET, IKM, NVG, VfV

The Clubs/Federations involved cover the whole German historic vehicle scene: cars,motorcycles, lorries, agriculture vehicles

The scope is to have a better coordination of subjects and to speak with one voice.

UNESCO – Irish approach: Open Call – National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage

I recently met with officials in the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to seek to have Historic Motoring included in a proposed new National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

The first step is to submit an expression of interest for their consideration. This involves some basic facts and background details to establish if it will meet their criteria. The officials were encouraging and I am hopeful that I will be able to make a successful submission to meet their requirements.

The Department has already accepted Uileann Piping (2016) and Hurling (2017). The IVVCC will be making a submission also.

International Youth Day 2019

Each year on August 12th, the world celebrates International Youth Day, a

day set aside to focus on the difficulties faced by young people around the

globe. The theme of International Youth Day 2019, “Transforming

education”, highlighted efforts to make education more relevant, equitable

and inclusive for all youth, including efforts by youth themselves.

The Culture Commission contributed to the day by preparing an article

focused on FIVA educational programmes, presenting ideas and steps to be

taken to motivate younger generation to participate in our movement.

We would invite all members to organizeactivities to support this initiative.

FIVA CULTURE AWARDS 2019This year FIVA for the SECOND time presented Culture Awards in the following categories:

a) RESEARCHOutstanding research projects which lead to tangible effects in the enhancement of cultural and technical mobile heritage worldwide.

TRONDHJEMSRIDTET 1919 NORWAY

Trondhjemsridtet 1919 is a Revival of the first long distance speed trial for motorcycles held in Norway.

The rally is 1250 kmlong and follows more or less the same roads used in the old days (1919-1924).

This association provides working standards in accordance to the FIVA Technical Code and the Charter of Turin, so collectors and owners can be sure to have their vehicles professionally preserved, restored, repaired and maintained.
