FLAMANVILLE 3 EPR Relive the major highlights of the year 2016 in photos!
January 2016 Implementation of the first operating tests on a part of the Component Cooling
System in the nuclear part of the plant.
January 2016 Installation of a pylon hosting the telecoms system of the future site emergency
response centre.
February 2016 Entry of the reactor vessel head in the reactor building.
February 2016 The sluice gate, 12.6 m high and 7.5 m wide, separates the reactor pool into two
compartments: the reactor cavity and the reactor vessel internals stand.
The mechanical assembly
operations on Flamanville EPR
main primary system were
completed. This stage marked
achievement of the first key
milestone laid down by the EDF
Group in September 2015.
March 2016
March 2016 Installation of the refuelling machine. As indicated by its name, this tool is used in the
operating phase to load the fuel in the reactor vessel with the telescopic mast.
April 2016
The two metal decks each weighing 38 tonnes, enabling the personnel to access the
steam generators and continue mechanical assembly operations were installed.
April 2016 The concrete mixing plant left the construction site permanently. This departure
marked the end of the main building structure works, giving way to the finishing
works.
May 2016 Installation of the filter handling machine for the different nuclear island systems in the
effluent treatment building.
May 2016 Closing of the equipment hatch, through which all the building equipment was
transported, especially the major components of the main primary system.
June 2016 Welding work on the piping of one the plant safety systems.
June 2016 After significant updating of plant configuration carried out since the start of the
year, the plant I & C system was returned to service.
July 2016 Connection of the piping for measurement of nuclear island gaseous effluent. An
activity carried out by rope access professionals.
July 2016 After three concreting lifts, the fuel building handling tower was closed off.
August 2016 On 1 August, the future EPR shift crews took up their first functions in the control
room to ensure monitoring and operation of certain plant systems: a significant stage
for the construction site, signalling the start of the operating and test phases.
August 2016 Turbine rotational testing. This involved rotation of the turbine connected to the
generator at 5 revs per hour to check good working order of the equipment.
September 2016 After removal of all the dome access walkways, the last mobile crane left the EPR
construction worksite.
September 2016 Cabling of the Safety and Information Control System (SICS) in the control room.
Within the framework of this specific activity, it is admissible not to wear gloves.
October 2016 Entry of the spent fuel racks. The purpose of these stainless steel parts, each one
weighing between 7 and 16 tonnes, is to store spent fuel in the spent fuel pool
compartment.
October 2016 Start-up of testing on the Reactor Water and Boron Makeup System.
October 2016 Testing was continued in the pumping station. Filling of the plant cooling systems with
water for leak testing.
November 2016 Connection of the signals between the I & C system and the different items of plant
was tested from the control room.
November 2016 Cleaning of the piping prior to connection to the diesel generator motors.
November 2016 Installation of the first control rod drive mechanisms on the reactor vessel head.
December 2016 Rotational testing of one of the two filter drums filled with water in the pumping
station.
December 2016 Measurement performed within the framework of rotational testing on one of the
motors on the turbine lubrication and jacking system in the turbine hall.
EDF Flamanville 3 wishes you season's greetings and a happy new year.
