2006 Wholesale Value of Floriculture Crops Decreased 4 Percent Value of All Production: The 2006 wholesale value of floriculture crops is down 4 percent from the revised 2005 valuation. The total crop value at wholesale for the 15-State program for all growers with $10,000 or more in sales is estimated at $4.00 billion for 2006, compared with $4.15 billion for 2005. Total crop value for the 36-State program in 2005 was $5.36 billion, thus the 15-State value was 77 percent of the larger 36-State total. California is again the leading State with crops valued at $1.02 billion, nearly identical to the 2005 value. Florida, the next largest producer, is down 16 percent from the prior year to $800 million in wholesale value. These two States account for 46 percent of the 15-State total value. For 2006, the top 5 States are California, Florida, Michigan, Texas, and New York which account for $2.67 billion or 67 percent of the 15-State total value. Number of Producers: The number of producers for 2006, at 6,546, is down 9 percent in the 15 States compared with the revised 2005 count of 7,178. The number of producers in the 36-State program was 10,692 the previous year. The number of producers with sales of $100,000 or more dropped 5 percent to 2,991 for 2006 from 3,154 in 2005. Area Used for Production: In the 15-State program, total covered area for floriculture crop production was 762 million square feet, 5 percent less than the revised 2005 figure. For 2005, the 15 States accounted for 85 percent of the 941 million square feet of covered area in the 36-State program. Greenhouse space for 2006, at 415 million square feet, is down 3 percent from 2005. This accounts for 54 percent of the total covered area. Shade and temporary cover is down 6 percent, at 347 million square feet. Open ground totaled 32,212 acres, 9 percent less than the revised 2005 total. In 2005, 15-State acreage was 86 percent of the 40,897 open ground acres in 36 States. Peak Hired Workers: The average peak number of hired workers employed on operations in the 15-State program in 2006 is 18.1, up 7 percent from a revised 16.9 in 2005. A total of 4,949 operations hired workers during 2006, compared with 5,494 a year earlier. Overall, 76 percent of the operations used some hired labor during 2006, compared with 77 percent in 2005.

Production from Operations with $100,000+ in Sales Total Wholesale Value: The total wholesale value of floriculture crops grown by operations exceeding $100,000 of sales in the 15-State program is $3.83 billion for 2006, down 3 percent from the revised 2005 total. These largest operations account for 96 percent of the total value of floriculture crops, but comprise only 46 percent of all producers. California contributed 26 percent of the total wholesale value in the 15 States. Florida ranks second with 21 percent; while Michigan, Texas, and North Carolina round out the top 5 States accounting for 9 percent, 7 percent, and 5 percent of the total, respectively. In 2005, total crop value from the large operations for the 36-State program was $5.08 billion, therefore the 15-State value was 78 percent of the larger 36-State total. Bedding/Garden Plants: The wholesale value of bedding and garden plants, at $1.79 billion, is down slightly from the previous year. This is the largest contributor to value of production and represents 47 percent of the wholesale value of all the reported crops. California, Michigan, Texas, Florida, and North Carolina, the top 5 States in this category, account for 57 percent of the total 15-State bedding and garden value. The number of growers producing annual bedding and garden plants is 1,805, down 5 percent from 2005. The 15-State program accounted for 69 percent of the 36-State value in 2005 for this category of plants. Potted bedding and garden plants, both annuals and perennials, are valued at $1.06 billion for 2006, up slightly from 2005. This value represents 59 percent of the bedding and garden category. Potted annual bedding and garden plants are valued at $554 million, down 2 percent from a year ago.


Potted herbaceous perennials, valued at $507 million for 2006, are 3 percent above their 2005 total. These crops account for 28 percent of the bedding and garden category. The 15-State program accounted for 71 percent of the 36-State value of this category in 2005. The number of growers producing herbaceous perennial plants is 1,404, down 8 percent from 2005. The value of annual bedding and garden flats is down 3 percent from a year earlier to $540 million. Flats represent 30 percent of the total value for bedding and garden plants. With the exception of Begonias, Geraniums from cuttings and New Guinea Impatiens, the values of all categories of plants grown in flats are down from the previous year. Flowering Hanging baskets account for $188 million in wholesale value, up 5 percent from 2005. Hanging baskets account for 11 percent of the total bedding and garden value. Potted Flowering Plants: Potted flowering plants for indoor or patio use are valued at $620 million, down 3 percent from 2005. California accounts for 33 percent of the 15-State value in this category. All crops in this category showed decreases in value except florist Azaleas which increased 13 percent to $35.2 million. Poinsettias continue to lead this category, with $169 million in value, virtually unchanged from 2005. The value of Potted Orchids is $123 million, down 9 percent from the previous year. In 2005, the 15 States produced 78 percent of the 36-State value. Foliage Plants: The value of 2006 foliage plant production, at $543 million, is down 19 percent from the previous year at the 15-State level. Florida continues to dominate this category with 68 percent of the value. Potted foliage plants represent 89 percent of the total foliage value. The remainder of the value is from hanging baskets. The number of foliage producers decreased by 7 percent to 957 in 2006. For 2005, the 15-State program covered 95 percent of the 36-State total value. Cut Flowers: The wholesale value of domestically produced cut flowers is $411 million for 2006, 4 percent more than 2005. California’s value is $316 million, up 4 percent from 2005, accounting for 77 percent of the total cut flower value in the 15 States. For 2005, the 15-State program represented 96 percent of the 36-State value of cut flowers. In 2006, the number of producers dropped 5 percent to 388. Cut Cultivated Greens: Cut cultivated greens wholesale value for 2006, at $109 million, is up 2 percent from 2005. Florida’s value, at $79.4 million, is up 1 percent and represents 73 percent of the category total. The 15-State program covers virtually all of the cut greens. The number of producers for 2006, at 196, increased by 9 from the previous year. Propagative Floriculture Materials: Total value of sales of material for annual bedding and garden plants, potted herbaceous perennials, potted flowering plants, foliage plants, cut flowers, and cut cultivated greens is $363 million for 2006, slightly less than the previous year. The three leading States, Florida, Michigan, and California, account for 66 percent of the 15-State total.

Survey Definitions Floriculture Crop: Any item considered in the categories of annual bedding and garden plants, potted herbaceous perennials, potted flowering plants for indoor and patio use, foliage plants for indoor or patio use, cut flowers, cut cultivated greens, and propagative floriculture materials. Refer to the copy of the questionnaire at the end of this report for specific examples. Commercial Producer: Any operation which produces any commodity listed above and whose gross sales total $10,000 or more during the calendar year. Area Used for Production: Greenhouse, other covered space, and outdoor area used for the production of floriculture crops. Walkways and aisles are included. Multiple uses of the same area are counted only once, without counting crop turns. Covered area includes glass, rigid plastic and film plastic greenhouses, and shade houses. Quantity Sold: Represents both retail and wholesale sales in the calendar year shown. Flowers, plants, or materials purchased from others for immediate re-sale are excluded. Bedding plant flats are converted to the standard 11-inch x 22-inch flat size. Expanded Wholesale Value: Value of all crops grown, at wholesale, for growers with sales of floriculture crops of $10,000 or more. This figure is the sum of two parts. The first is the wholesale value of sales as reported by operations with $100,000 or more in sales. The second part is an estimated value for operations with sales between $10,000 and $99,999. The value is derived by multiplying the number of producers in each range of sales by the mid-point of the range. Value of Sales at Wholesale: Equivalent wholesale value of all sales. It is derived by multiplying the average wholesale price by the total quantity sold (both retail and wholesale). Wholesale prices are on a gross basis before deductions for sales commissions, transportation charges, or other similar deductions.


Survey Procedures The floriculture statistics presented in this publication are compiled from interviews of all known growers of floriculture crops in the 15 program States. Producers must have annual gross sales of all floriculture crops exceeding $10,000 to be included in this report. These results are based upon the Commercial Floriculture Survey questionnaire, a copy of which is included on the following pages of this report. During the collection of 2006 data in the 15 program States, previous year information was sometimes updated. Additionally, in order to maintain comparability within the 15-State program, data for 2005 and 2006 were collected, where appropriate, from any new operations discovered through ongoing list building activities. Operations are classified by summing the value of actual plant sales reported in the questionnaire. This lessens the possibility that sales of non-floriculture plant material may be included. Data for 2005 in the 21 States dropped from the program was not open for revision in this report. The data in this report for annual bedding and garden plants, potted herbaceous perennials, potted flowering plants for indoor and patio use, foliage plants for indoor or patio use, cut flowers, cut cultivated greens, and propagative floriculture materials are summarized only from growers with $100,000 or more in annual sales. The data summarized in tables showing grower numbers, hired workers, and growing area represent all growers having sales of $10,000 or more. The tables showing selected Hawaiian crops include data for all operations with sales at, or above, the $10,000 level.
