While now may not be the easiest time to start up a new business, dreams don’t always wait until the perfect time. What has been years in the making, Liisa Allen has started a new cut flower farm - Pollenation Cut Flowers & Botanicals, located here on St. Joseph Island near Milford Haven.

Once again we are conducting our interviews remotely so we sat down with owner Liisa Allen via email to talk about her new venture and what brought her to this point.

Having moved to the Island with her family in 2019, she has been busy preparing this long awaited busi-ness since. which will be ready for harvest in the next two to three weeks. The regular harvest season will begin in mid-to late June and continue through September, possibly the first couple weeks of October.”

Q: While we are no experts on flowers, Northern Ontario is not the first place we would think of to start up a flower business. So our first question for her is what brought her here:

A: After 21 years in the military, my husband re-tired in 2019 and accepted a job in Sault Ste. Marie. I’m originally from the area (I grew up north of the city), and so in a way I feel that I’ve returned “home,” though the Island is new to my family and I. I’ve been planning to start a cut flower business for a few years, but had to bide my time until we were finally settled. As for growing cut flowers in our climate, our area offers a long enough season to produce an abundance of flowers from last frost to first. Cut flowers are grown like any other market garden crop, but much closer together so less space is needed. When I say “flower farm” people might picture large fields of flowers, but that’s large-scale farming. Most cut flower growers in Canada (and in the U.S.) grow on a much smaller scale, and with supplying their local community in mind.

Q: Can you tell us a little bit about your background - did you work as a florist before?

A: I am not a florist, no, but I do love all things design. Before becoming a mom in 2010 I worked in communications/journalism, but I’ve always been interested in horticulture. In 2017 I started working towards my horticulture diploma through the Uni-

Q: The subscription service sounds interesting, would this be something you plan to deliver locally?

A: Beginning in late June/end of July customers can purchase seasonal bouquet subscriptions, which works much like a CSA (community-supported ag-riculture). Customers pre-purchase their bouquets, which are then delivered at four-week intervals throughout the growing season. Our tulip season started one week ago (and will continue for the next two weeks), and so I’ve been delivering free of charge to customers across the Island. That will continue through the summer months with the subscriptions.

Q: Can you tell us a bit about a couple of your favou-rite flowers or plants? Maybe pick one that everyone would know and one that is more exotic.

A: That’s a difficult question to answer! I do love gladiolus, which I’ll be growing here this summer, but my favourites are (ironically) lupine and milk-weed, which you’ll see quite often growing in ditches and along the roadside.

Q: Is everything grown outside or do you have greenhouses as well?

A: We do have a 30ft greenhouse which currently houses the tulips and newly-transplanted snapdrag-ons. Everything else is field grown.

More information can be found at www.pollenation.ca.

Q: While we checked out her website we found that she does offer more than just fresh cut flowers. Is anything you grow used in any of these products?

A: The “botanical” side of Pollenation is small-batch natural skincare products, which I’ve been creating since 2013 and can be found on Etsy. I do plan on growing some of the plants used in my skincare products, mainly lavender, chamomile and calendu-la, among others.

We wish Liisa the best of luck in her new venture.

Food Distribution Moves To Legion Parking Lot

May 17, 2020 St. Joseph Island Lions Club continue with assisting the Algoma Harvest / United Way with the food distribution.

The location may have changed but the help of food brought to St. Joseph Island continues. Friday, May 15th, Algoma Harvest / United Way delivered foods ranging from chocolate milk, vegetables, baby cook-ies, prepared soups and so much more at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 374 in Richards Landing where the SJI Lions Club was ready to help with disbursing the food to all residents.

It is estimated that 75 people collected foods and many also picked up a bag for a family member or neighbour. The Lions also delivered 10 orders for persons who were not able to come out either because of restricted mobility or because of needed COVID-19 precautions. Foods left after the distribution to the community was brought to the St. Joseph Island and Area Food Bank.

Being able to spread out the display of food, a large parking lot and lots of room for everyone to practice safe distancing made the task so much safer and more comfortable for all. The SJI Lions Club thanks the Legion for their support with the space.

The Lions will continue to help with Algoma Harvest every 2 weeks on Fridays 4 to 6pm and will also offer deliveries to those who need. Call Lion Carla to inform her that you are interested in this service 705-971-0997.

The numbers of people using the service is al-ways growing. There is no advance knowledge or what foods will arrive. Please bring your own bags and practice all the recommended safety.Take Care and Stay Safe. Submitted by St. Joseph Island Lions Club

Creature Feature

White sucker fish

If you’re passing by the I Line creek anytime soon, take a look and maybe you will see dozens, maybe hundreds of these suckers in the shallow waters! It’s around this time of year where they are at their peak. They seem to be slightly later this year, than in the last few years.

When the water temperature is above 40°F, the white sucker ascends streams to spawn in clear flowing streams, in gravelly and stony areas, like the creek. Once they have finished spawning, they will return to calmer waters so if you want to check them out head out soon. Adult suckers may live to be more than 15 years of age and return to spawn to the same spot annually throughout their life.

Suckers are bottom feeders and can survive in fairly polluted waters. They suck up all sorts of creatures that they find on the bottom, including insects (mainly insect larvae), crustaceans, molluscs (snails and small clams) and annelids (worms and leech-es). Suckers “hoover” up their food and swallow it, they have no teeth, just really big voluptuous lips. They reach a size of 30-50 centimetres (12-20

You may or may not want to eat them, or even fish for them but seeing large quantities in the small creek is pretty impressive. When sold as food they are often referred to as “Mullet”. Because that sounds so much more appetizing.

NO CLIPPINGS NEXT WEEK

There will be no May 28th Clippings. We will be on hiatus for one week and then return. Until things get closer to nor-

mal we will take things week by week so if there’s no Clippings

for one week, don’t fret! We will return. While this may cause a few minor inconveniences,

at this time it is a challenge to complete an issue each week, but eventually things will be

back to normal.

May 19. 2020UPDATE RE: PREMIER AND MINISTER OF EDUCATION EXTEND CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS UNTILEND OF THE SCHOOL YEAR--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------The Algoma District School Board advises parents that today, the Premier and Minister of Education announced that, based on expert advice from pub-lic health officials, schools will remain closed for the remainder of the school year. At home learning will continue to be available until the end of June, thus ADSB students will continue to receive work and communications from our staff. Additional-ly, the Ministry will be providing, in the coming weeks, further information about enhanced sum-mer learning opportunities.

As a result of today’s announcements, we will be preparing further information for families about the retrieval of students’ belongings and system-level plans for graduations, which will be communicated via our voice messaging system and email.

THANK YOU

I would like to express my gratitude to the Hilton, Joce-lyn, and St. Joseph volunteer Fire Departments for their quick response to a garage fire on Second Street in Hilton Beach on April 5th. I was very impressed with how efficient they all were. I live next door to the fire and without their excellent work, my neighbours would have lost their house and I would have had much more damage on my property. Thank you all so much.-Donna Lambert

We have a daughter that is 3 years old and we just wanted to send out a little thank you,. We are residents of Richards Landing, we live on the F&G line. This past Sunday was our daughter’s 3rd birthday. Due to the current covid-19 situation we had to cancel her birth-day party and due to social distancing no one really got to see her on her birthday. She doesn’t quite understand as it’s hard to explain to a three-year-old what is going on. We wanted to send out a special thank you to everyone who drove by our house on Sunday April 26th. Spencer had built a sign with our daughter and it said “honk for my 3rd birth-day”. Every person who drove by our house honked for our daughter’s birthday. it was wonderful to see, and amazing to see her reaction every time she heard that noise. We were outside most of the day as it was beautiful. Our daughter got extremely ecstatic every time someone drove by and blew their horn. And for that we want to say thank you. Thank you for making her day so special Sincerely, Spencer Brooke and Charlotte.*this message was missed in the last clippings

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Maybe it hasn’t been THAT quiet?

After wondering why we had not gotten any calls in some time we realized our phone had been broken. This is why you have gotten a busy signal for days on end if you tried to reach us. No, we don’t chit chat that much. We were still able to make outgoing calls so never realized there was an issue. Email is our preferred method of commu-nication and [email protected] is the easiest way to get a hold of us. That being said we have replaced our phone and are of course still taking phone calls. Keep in mind with the Clippings currently publishing every other week we may step out into the yard or for a walk when we otherwise would be home to answer your call.
