As many of you will know, the fate of aproposed wind farm between Greatworthand Helmdon is now in the hands of RtHon Eric Pickles, Secretary of State, a

decision is due early 2014.

Renewable energy comes from natural resources that arereplenished constantly and do not deplete any resource tocreate the energy. Therefore, alternative, renewable energyresources have to be found or the world will be a sadplace, if at all !

Currently, the top 10 renewable energy resources are:Tidal, Wave, Solar, Wind, Hydro, Radiant, Geothermal,Biomass, Compressed natural Gas (CNG), Nuclear.As to which one(s) is the answer, only time will tell.

Herbaceous plants can be dug up andthe roots split into 2 or more parts andreplanted or given to friends.

Prepare the vegetable patch, spread asmuch organic matter as you can overthe surface and then dig it in. This willwarm you up on a bright crispy Wintermorning. The frost will then do all thehard work breaking down the lumps giving you a lovelyfine tilth for your seeds in the Spring.

Early veg can be sown in February, broad beans,shallots, early potatoes it is best if you have a clocheto grow them under as this will encourage growth andprotect them from the frost.

This month James has shared his knowledge of whatwe can still do in our gardens this time of year. So sitback, get a cup of tea and a mince pie if you’ve anyleft and read what will benefit the largest room of your

home while you wait for Spring…

So, should we stay inside and wait wistfully for the warmerweather? Well, yes. However not before we’ve completedthose all-important Winter jobs.

1. Pruning all shrubs that have finished flowering. Prunethese 2” ahead of any new buds, the buds you see this timeof year on the branches are new leaves and flowers for thespring. Shape the shrubs to your preferred size and shape,you shouldn’t kill them, don’t worry.

2. Prune all Perennials. These are your spring and summerflowering flowers, this time of year they are dormant, all thegrowth and life is under the ground protecting itself from thefrost. I tend to prune these about 5-6” above ground height,the left foliage protects the plants a little and helps you seewhere it is until it grows again in the spring.

3. Pamper the lawn. This is a great time of year to rake outthe moss. If you’ve a large lawn you can hire petrol poweredrake. Be warned though, go gently at first if your using apetrol driven one, they have a tendency to be hard on thelawn and can leave it looking shredded and bare!!! Startoff on a high setting first and lower it slowly until the desiredeffect is achieved.

Once the moss is raked out then apply a sharp sand 30% &top soil 70% mix to top dress the lawn. If the hard frosts havefinished scatter grass seed over the entire lawn. Don’t waterit, just allow it to germinate in its own time and it’ll be a farstronger lawn.

Spreading bark over the borders. This helps suppressweed seeds and spores from germinating and retainsmoisture in the soil. It also makes the borders look far tidierand healthier even in the tough Winter months.

Other jobs can include noting where there are any bareplanting areas in the borders and thinking if some additionalwinter colour would benefit for next year. I’ll give examples ofmy bulb and planting favourites another time.

Lastly take a good look at the garden from an upstairs windowand start sketching any changes; perhaps where an additionalseating area could go? Look for areas that favour morning andevening sun, this gives you two usable patios in the garden.Look at revising border shapes in the spring. Perhaps anoverhead pergola could be constructed over the evening terracewith a removable weatherproof sail to give shade or protectionfrom the elements.

There’s a whole range of jobs that can be done now, all willbenefit the garden hugely and you’ll see the fruits of your labourwhen it comes to March/April and the warmer weather breatheslife to the plants and lawn. Everything will jump into life moreinvigorated and rested.
