11F ran a fundraiser in our theatre at the end of last term for a charity of their choice. The chosen charity was Marie Curie. Marie Curie gives people with a terminal illness opportunity to be looked after at home with the care of the nurses. The night, which consisted of performances from students throughout the school, was a huge success raising over £150 for this caring charity! Acts who performed included ex- student and now local artist Josh Kemp and Friesland alumni Jack Eccles. Sixth former George Ramplin, sibling duo Lucy and Tom Judson, plus a variety of singers/dancers from Year 7 through to Y13 entertained us throughout the evening. One of the highlights was the staff band including Mr Rosling, Mr Howes and Mr York who gave

their rendition of ‘That’s what I go to school for’. The audience loved every moment and it was an amazing way to have a brilliant evening out, in great company, with fantastic entertainment! Thank you so much to everyone who supported our form that night and thank

With Goose Fair and Ilkeston Fair just finished, Performing Arts decided to transform itself into a Funfair too! In small groups, Year 8 students use their bodies to create a fairground ride, and use vocal skills and costume to scare or thrill the rider. After research, careful planning, lots of rehearsal and costume creations later, our lovely Miss Phillips gets to kick off her heels to ride all 8 forms’ funfair! Using the 5 C’s (cooperation, concentration, communication, creativity and confidence) students work together to create, perform and respond to the best of their ability to achieve the highest of grades.Mrs Maclaughlin is on fire at the minute with her dance rehearsals! Twice a week the ladies take to the stage for 2 hours of dancing to Queen! Favourites such as Radio Gaga, Somebody to Love and It’s a kind of Magic have been choreographed by our talented Mrs M, hoping to get everyone

Congratulations to the following students who have passed their LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exam. They are a credit to the school; enthusiastic, professional, organised, positive throughout the whole exam day. dance ready to showcase to their parents later this term. The Year 5s at Redhill have been studying India, so they are working on a Bollywood Dance Routine. All the students have been working really hard and showing off the dance and drama skills.I’m looking forward to the ‘Healthy Eating’ project with KS1 at Longmoor and exploring ‘The Jolly Postman’ story with Year 1s at Redhill. Coming up at Cloudside I will be exploring ‘The Iron Man’ story with Year 4s and at Draycott Primary the Year 5s are going to create a performance piece linked to their topic ‘Oliver’. dancing in their seat and enjoying the show.Miss Phillips is currently working with Year 5 at Redhill Primary School and are studying India. As part of learning about Indian culture, Miss Phillips has created a Bollywood dance with them. Year 6 at Firfield are studying Ancient Greece, and with the help of Miss Phillips they are creating a play based on the Greek myth Pandora’s Box. These primary school visits delivered by Miss Phillips and Mrs Carr are part of the transition work to introduce local primary schools to the wonderful work we do here at Friesland. By the time students visit Friesland in Years 5 and 6, students already know some of the staff working in Performing Arts and already they feel at home. With the clocks changing and the weather getting colder, let’s keep our brains busy to warm up our toes! Miss Maclellan

views from this mountain top. We took the cable car back down the mountain, before returning to Barcelona. No visit to Barcelona would be complete without seeing the extraordinary cathedral, La Sagrada Familia and all eyes looked skyward as we turned the corner to see this amazing building. Following this, we made a final visit to the beach to relax before our homeward journey early the next day. The Year Ten students will be making good use of this Catalonian experience when they study leisure in Barcelona as part of their GCSE geography course. I am sure all students and parents would join me in thanking Mrs Lacey for the considerable time and effort she put into organising this visit.

In October, the Year 11 geographers ventured to the seaside to gather information for their controlled assessment. This fieldtrip to Hornsea involved students assessing the effectiveness of the coastal management on the fastest eroding coastline in Europe. It was a wet and windy day and the students maintained remarkably high spirits given the conditions – even as their work booklets turned to paper mâché! They worked hard and had a great opportunity to observe the power of the sea. They certainly earned the fish and chips they had for lunch. They will now make use of their experiences and the

evidence they collected to write their controlled assessments; a key part of their GCSE examination.Thank you to all staff who have supported these visits.Coming soon:• Year 10 visit to London• Year 12 and 13 residential fieldtrip to the Lake District.Miss Daniels

In the summer, the Year Ten

geographers headed to Bramcote Wood to discover more about a local ecosystem. They followed a trail around the area and surveyed the wood to learn more about the vegetation. They also considered how humans are affecting this environment and the damage that has been caused. Once they had finished all the hard work, they enjoyed an ice cream whilst waiting to board the coach back to school. In July, 74 students visited Barcelona. On Day One, we flew to Spain and settled into the accommodation. Following this we went for a walk to Las Ramblas, the world famous shopping street. The next day we set off for Nou Camp and enjoyed exploring the museum and stadium at the home of Barcelona FC. After this we headed for the Metro

and travelled to the Gaudi House to view this architectural oddity. We then headed to the beach for a relaxing time in the sun. On Day Three the Year Nine students had a great opportunity to put

their geography learning into practice as we visited La Garroxta, the volcanic park north of Barcelona. We learnt about the past eruptions of the volcanoes in this area and the potential risk of future eruptions. We climbed up an extinct volcano in the heat of the day and stood in the crater where thousands of years ago lava spilled out over the landscape. On the final day of our adventure, we wentto Montserrat and saw the stunning

Hello from Dick GillmanI’m Dick Gillman and I used to teach Science at Friesland from 1980 to 2004. I’m living happily in retirement in Brittany, France and was surfing the net when I came across the excellent Friesland Newsletter. I read this with a great deal of interest and noticed at the bottom of the letter that there was a contact email address for the newsletter. I also saw that you were looking for items to include in later issues. You readers may be interested to know that since my heart attack and retirement from teaching, I have begun to write Sherlock Holmes short stories. I have written five over the last few years but it was only last year that I got round to publishing them. This month I published them all on Amazon and they have, I’m pleased to say, ‘taken off’. In the Historical Thrillers section of Amazon.com I am at No. 5 in the ‘Hot New Releases’ section. Just search for me on Amazon I would imagine that there are many parents of current Friesland students who have been taught by me. I noticed some familiar family names as I read the newsletter (did I teach your mother or father?). I did a rough calculation and over the years I think I have taught well in excess of 4,000 students. I hope that they would be pleased to know that I am happy in my retirement in sunny Brittany and have discovered a new talent through my new literary hobby. If you would like more information about me and my books, I would be more than happy to oblige. Please pass on my best wishes to colleagues who remember me, I hope to visit Friesland whilst I am back in the UK for a few days early next month.Kind regards, Dick Gillman

Dear Mr MiddletonI am just emailing you to inform you about Leah Beal’s success over the summer. She swam at the Nationals in July and before she entered the pool she had the slowest time. Leah, being Leah, used this to give her motivation to swim fast, which she did! She swam a fantastic 17 second personal best time (she swims the 800m free), finished 1st in her heat, which she led from the start and she is now ranked 12th fastest 12yr old nationally now. We are very proud of Leah. She swims 8 sessions a week, three 5.30 starts before school, she always does her homework and plans her time really well. She only has Tuesday night and Sunday when she

Usual preparations for the Erewash District Athletics Championship were disrupted this year due to the year 7 and 8 track athletics competitions being cancelled because of bad weather. The Friesland School students were not put off by this and showed strong commitment by turning up to athletics practice on a weekly basis, constantly striving to better their own performance. As we arrived at Moorways Athletics Stadium for the District competition, the sun was shining and it looked as though it was going to be a perfect day. The school knew that winning this year was more important than ever and the support from every single member of staff on sportsday and in preparing for district, assisted with selecting the right team to take. WINNERS!were important, the success of the school at this event for the past 19 years had been the result of a team effort, with staff always encouraging the students to go out there and enjoy the day. By the lunch time break, the scores were very close between a number of schools but Friesland had faith in their sprinters, who could always perform under pressure, in both their individual events and in their relay events. The end of the day proved to be very tense with a number of schools performing particularly well and as the results were about to be announced, there was a level of uncertainty as to whether Friesland School had done enough to make it their 20th consecutive year. Individual year group honours were shared between a number of schools, however, it was Friesland who came away with the most

victories resultingin the school being crowned overall District Athletics Champions for 2013, their 20th consecutive year. Well done to all that took part!Mr Lilley, Head of PE at Friesland School and chair of the Erewash School Sports Association said: ‘It was an excellent competition this year, with performances of a high standard from all schools. The sportsmanship of all students at the event was something that the partnership should be proud of. Thank you to all the schools that took part and to the PE departments for their hard work. I am particularly pleased with Friesland’s 20th victory and I am extremely proud of all the students.’PE Department

Guten Tag!In September Friesland was delighted to welcome fifteen students from Dreieichschule in Germany. After a warm welcome at the airport in Birmingham and the first night in their host families, Friesland students and their exchange partners had a great time getting to know each other while filming their own ghost stories in Newstead Abbey. Before spending the weekend with their exchange partners, the German students spent a day at Friesland to experience what it is like

The European Week of Languages took place during the week commencing the 23rd September.

Students took part in a European quiz during assemblies that week, with X competing against Y, with Y being the overall winners! Well done to Mr Monk who spoke Russian in the year 11 assembly, only for the year 11s to burst out in a round of applause! It was indeed very impressive. The school canteen provided foods from 2 European countries each day which were delicious. I especially enjoyed the Danish Meatballs!

The German exchange students were with us during the week

and participated in a German breakfast. We invited year 6 students from both Firfield and Draycott Primary schools to join us. Students were able to take part in a variety of activities whilst also sampling some lovely German food. The year 6s enjoyed the morning and when they left it was lovely hearing them all say a few words of German.Well done to Friesland staff who greeted their students in a different European language all week. The students enjoyed seeing which members of staff are able

to speak another language!Congratulations to Lauren Buj Wynne in 7I who won this year’s poster competition advertising the week. Here she is with her winning entry.

On the evening of Thursday June 13th, 100 Year 8 and 9 Friesland students set off on a day trip to France. At 8am French time the following morning we were in time to be the first customers of

the day at a bakery in Boulogne, and try out our French buying croissants and lots of other lovely French goodies. Then it was a trip to Nausicaa - a sea life experience with sea lions, turtles

C’est formidable!and sharks. The alligators were so still we weren’t too sure they were real, but the students who got splashed by the cheeky penguins know they were definitely real!

Lunch at a French restaurant was followed by a trip to a sweet factory were some

students turned their hand to sweet making. We rounded the day off with a chance to shop in the hyper market before heading back to the chunnel and the journey home. Students behaved brilliantly and were a credit to the school, and both they and the staff thoroughly enjoyed the day.

On the final morning, pupils from Draycott and Firfield came to meet both the English and German students, and they all had a German breakfast together and found out a bit more about German language and culture. Friesland students are already looking forward to spending a memorable time in Langen next summer.

My name is Matt Wood and I’m a 15 year old swimmer looking for funding to help my swimming career progress. I swim for City of Derby Swimming Club and I have been swimming for 9 years, having progressed through County and Midland championships, I currently swim at National level and compete in high level

Friesland raise money for local charities! Year 9 students were supporting local charities in school this week with a charity fete they had planned and set up all by themselves. There were many and varied stalls for students in Year 7 and 8 to visit, including a splat board, a penalty shoot out and a hula hooping competition. The students manages to raise just over £380 during the 2 hour fete. It was a great event and both students and staff thoroughly enjoyed the morning. Monies raised will go to a variety of charities including Charlotte’s Healing Horses and The Jessica Hope www.frieslandschool.com

Commonwealth trials times which could give me the opportunity to one day be selected for the GB team, which would be one of my long term goals.Swimming is a very dedicated sport to be in, I learnt to swim at the age of 4 and have been competing since the age of 9. I train 15 hours a week in the pool and 3 hours land based work, alongside school and a paper round. Twice a week I am up at 4am to be in the pool for a two hour session. My training is spread between swimming pools, I train in Derby, Repton and Loughborough on a weekly basis and my competitions are all over the country, Sheffield, Corby, Coventry to name a few. Swimming is also an expensive sport, training aids last quite a while but training trunks I get through quite a few of these a year. Competition trunks are £150-£300 each so I try to make them last as long as possible. Driving to and from training and competitions is very expensive (so my parents tell me), and of course the entry fees for all the competitions I enter throughout the year. This December I have the opportunity of a lifetime, to go to Zambia and spend 10 days swimming abroad, also to teach the local children how to swim. This lifesaving skill is much needed in Zambia. Zambia

has just finished building its first Olympic size pool with funding from

the International Olympic Committee and Sport in Action which is the charity I will be helping. For the last 4 days of the trip Ross Davenport, Joanne Jackson and Rebecca Adlington will also be coming out to teach in the swim clinics. I need to raise between £1000-£1200 to cover the cost of the trip, plus extra for community projects in Zambia. I have saved some money towards this already but being at school and swimming I have limited time to earn money, I am up at 6am on non-swimming mornings to do a paper round before school which is how I have managed to save a small amount towards the costs. I would really like to make a difference to other people’s lives and feel this is a great way to start, not only will the children of Zambia learn something I will too, a different way of living.I love swimming, and helping people so would love to build my future around this, in order to do this I am looking for donations towards my charity trip to Zambia. If you would like to know more about me, my swimming club or the Zambia Charity trip please contact me. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter.Matt Wood year 11.

Great fun fund raising On Monday 4th November, 6 of our year 10’s were invited to present their project on freight transportation on the railway at the Houses of Parliament, as part of the 2013 Tomorrow’s Engineers Week. See pic featuring Hannah Murray, Ben Harbey, Charlie Wright, Reuben Clark, Chris Froggatt, Willow Hempell and Lord Lucas! They were worried their project wouldn’t compare to all the private schools at such a prestigious event (this is the 3rd time they’ve been invtied to present this project so they know what the competition is like!) but their stand was rammed full for the entire event, with industry experts, MP’s and Lords eager to see what’s inspiring our young students to get thinking about engineering. The kids were absolutely in their element, please pass on how proud they should be of themselves, and what a credit they were to the school.Miss Shapland

After completing the first year of our media A level myself and classmates were delighted to be taken on a trip to De Montfort University in Leicester to take part in a series of workshops at the university’s English and Media Festival. We learnt about the university itself and then used equipment we hadn’t heard of, or even knew existed!

The day started off with a session of ‘film dubbing’. This workshop involved using ProTools software, which meant working across 3 computer screens, something none of us had experienced before. We turned two of our students into aliens, one alien had a wimpy squeaky voice, so we used the person with the deepest voice in the class,

Mad about MediaJordan. The second alien had a deep manly voice so the obvious choice for us was to use Emma, who has a fairly high pitch tone. It turned out brilliant and the voices were barely recognisable to their originals in both cases! It was really interesting finding out how the voices on TV shows such as “Doctor Who” are created and getting the opportunity to use it.

The second session involved a Media lecture all about how different politicians have different ways of making themselves look better in the media. It showed us some characteristics of various politicians that have been caught on camera, for example, when secret filming had taken place,

the politicians seemed natural but suddenly their attitude changed when they realised they were being filmed; it’s amazing how their body language altered. The third session was all to do with marketing in social networking, this was a lecture where everyone could get involved, share and discuss ideas. It was particularly interesting to see how far social networking has developed over the past few years, and

how it is more than just the conventional use of connecting with celebrities, friends and family members, many businesses now use sites such as Facebook and Twitter to promote their products and services. Finally we ended the day with a green

screening session. This was helpful for us as we have a green screen in the sixth form but we haven’t yet had the opportunity use it. It gave us an insight into how green

screens can be used in films, music videos and other media forms. Everyone jumped on board with this session and got hands on experience both behind the camera and in front of it, as well as the editing of the footage. After the day I spoke to a few of my classmates to see what they thought of the event, Sophie said, ‘It was very beneficial in terms of opening your eyes into what sort of things the university has on offer for media courses.’ Josh commented, ‘It’s made me think more about how much effort goes into making media productions.’ Thank you to Mr Lane and Miss Gascoyne for arranging the trip.Kyle Ricci
