STACEY VANDEVELDE

Many people do not know that hunger is threatening our country, but we know better

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRWOMAN2016 MARKS OUR QUINQUENNIAL YEAR. YES, WE ARE OFFICIALLY 5!

In this short time we have made some momentous achievements and have certainly made our mark on the community. At this time we are proud to offer two food programmes. Our school meal programme, which began in 2011, is our primary food support programme and serves as a lifeline for many children in the Cayman Islands, ensuring them daily access to nutritious food and fuel. Our summer food programme launched in 2014 aims to bridge the gap that summer presents for those children who rely on a subsidised school meal. In conjunction with our focus on offering food support to those in need are our educational out reach programmes. Since 2013 we have delivered two educational workshops each year to the children and families that we support with the goal being to enable and equip them to make better food choices and provide tools to help them provide for themselves. This has all has been accomplished on limited resources, with committed volunteers and generous supporters.

Thank you for joining us in support of Cayman’s children.

SIGNATUREEVENTS

Empty Bowls Hunger Awareness And Fundraising EventThe Empty Bowls premise is a simple one whereby the community works to create handcrafted bowls. The annual Feed Our Future Empty Bowls event is held each May with the support of the students and faculty at Cayman International School. Event supporters are invited to a simple meal served in the handcrafted bowl that they select, in exchange for a cash donation. Guests keep the handcrafted bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. This year’s event, the 4th annual, was sponsored by Ragazzi, Calypso Grill and Gelato & Co. Cayman International School, Magician Erik and face painter Evana volunteered entertainment. Bob the Iguana, the Cayman International School mascot also made a special appearance.

Child Month Island Wide Dress-Down DayMay is designated as Child Month in the Cayman Islands and for the 5th year, Feed Our Future has partnered with the Department of Children and Family Services to host an Island wide dress down day event that invites the Cayman Islands to join us in advocating for the basic rights of Cayman’s children. This initiative, supported by the community with enthusiasm serves as one of our largest awareness and most successful fundraising initiatives. The theme for this year was ‘Shaping Our Children’s Future.’ Appreciation is extended to Deutsche Bank (Cayman) Limited, Miracle Brokers, Camana Bay, and the Cayman Islands Government whose sponsorship helps to offset costs associated with this event.

Island RoasNo shoes required. Rain or shine! Our annual Island Roast event, now moving into its 6th year is an event not to be missed. The 5th Annual Roast held last October was memorable, for the first time we had a wet fete! Despite some showers the event carried on seamlessly. With the help and hard work of our volunteer team from The Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman and Mise en Place the Camana Bay beach was again transformed into a chic beach setting featuring Feed Our Future’s restaurant partners and some of the best of Cayman’s culinary offerings on Island from Mise en Place, The Chef’s of the Ritz Carlton Grand Cayman, Smokin Bros, Catch, The Bistro, The Lobster Pot, Ortanique, ABS Trade & Commerce Ltd. (aka the Cuban food station) and Saucha. Other event sponsors, Camana Bay, Foster’s Food Fair/IGA, Massive Equipment Rental, Hurley’s Media, DMS Broadcasting, Mega Systems, Mike’s Ice, AI Rentals, The Security Centre, Cayman Distributors Group, Seven Fathoms Rum, Steel Attitude, Intec Research Cayman Ltd., Premier Valet, Island Supply and last but certainly not least Operator Tnt of IMG Entertainment also contribute greatly to this popular event.

OUR AWARENESS AND FUNDRAISING EVENTS HAVE DEVELOPED OVER THE PAST FOUR YEARS INTO SIGNATURE EVENTS THAT THE COMMUNITY ANTICIPATE, SUPPORT AND BENEFIT FROM.

When children do not eat they lack energy and focus

Most kidsthat come from low-income families access the majority of their meals at school

Life Skill WorkshopsFeed our Future’s workshops are intended to equip the families we support with the skills and tools required to enable them to prepare healthy meals for themselves. A lot of planning and time goes into ensuring these workshops are valuable for all who attend. In December of 2015 we delivered the informative '’Test Your Taste Buds' educational workshop at the George Town Primary School hall. Participants were asked to test their taste buds as they were exposed to a variety of local herbs and fruits, available to enhance the meals prepared that evening. The workshop was led by volunteer Chef Susan. Sponsorship was kindly offered through Cost U Less, The Westin Grand Cayman and Mr. & Mrs. Yonnet. Our participative Cooking Matters workshop held in May of this year at the John Gray High School kitchen lab brought together an eager group of parents and children ready to have some fun and prepare some healthy and tasty dishes. Again local and easily sourced ingredients were the main stay of the dishes prepared for the evening. Special thanks to Mise en Place volunteer Chef’s Julio and Gardine as well as Feed Our Future volunteers Chad Collins (Nutritionist) and Sarah Hydes. Feed Our Future offers two educational workshops each year and encourages all in the community who may benefit to join. Through the recent donation of funds from Intertrust Cayman earmarked for educational use only Feed Our Future is poised to develop and enhance these offerings.

A Recipe For SummerThis food programme provides approved families with weekly access to a selection of healthy perishable and non-perishable food goods that correlate to special meal recipes and tips included in their grocery bags for healthy eating and stretching a dollar. Over the 8 to 9 weeks of summer this programme reach extends up to 100 children. The success of this programme is only possible through our partner in this initiative, Foster’s Food Fair/IGA, whose commitment to this programme is invaluable. In April of 2016 the Juniper “Putting for a Purpose” group made a substantial donation of non-perishable dry goods to the 2016 summer programme. Above this, the budget for the 2016 summer food programme was realised through the generous support of Greenlight Re, Rotary Central, Management Plus Ltd. and the Cayman Masonic Children’s Foundation.
