G lucose control has always been important for people with diabetes but now it is being

recommended for controlling weight and preventing cardiovascular disease. Choosing foods with a lower Glycemic Index is one tool for controlling glucose

(blood sugar) levels. Check out the Tip Sheet on Controlling Blood Sugar (p. 5) that contains shop-ping tips and an explanation for Glycemic Index and Glycemic Load. Also find a Glycemic Index/Glycemic Load Comparison Chart (p. 6).

Glucerna Cereal

Have you ever experienced “breakfast envy”? According to a national online survey commissioned by Abbott Nutrition’s Glucerna Cereal, many people with diabetes say this to themselves every day. In fact, more than eight out of 10 people with type 2 diabetes feel left out at breakfast time when family and friends munch on cereals or pastries. Eighty percent of those polled want more variety in their breakfast choices. For this reason, Abbott developed Glucerna Cereal to help man-age blood sugar response. Each cereal variety is an excellent source of fiber (5 g), and contains 5 g whole grains and 3 g protein per ¾-cup serv-ing. Glucerna Cereal also contains chromium picolinate, a trace mineral that helps the body’s insulin work more efficiently.

The results of a clinical study in people with diabetes comparing Glucerna Cereal and a leading corn flake cereal showed that Glu-cerna Cereal produced a 26% smaller rise in blood sugar over four hours in patients with type 2 diabetes. Read research.

Glucerna Cereal comes in three flavors—Crunchy Flakes ‘n Raisins, Crunchy Flakes ‘n Almonds, and Crunchy Flakes ‘n Strawberries.

All Glucerna products are designed by Abbott Nutrition to meet the needs of people with diabetes. They contain a unique blend of slowly digested carbohydrates and key ingredients such as chromium pico-linate, sucromalt, and DAG oil. Additional Glucerna products are shakes, meal bars, and snack bars.

Pros: Low glycemic index

Cons: None

We tried the Glucerna Creamy Chocolate Delight shake and found the flavor good and not too sweet. The cereal is similar in crunch and taste to other flake cereals.

Enterex Glucose Control

Enterex is a meal-replacement drink made especially for people with diabetes. The chocolate Enterex is made with non-chocolate ingredi-ents, which makes it safe for people with an allergy to chocolate or intolerance for caffeine. Enterex boasts that it contains less sugar than any other brand (See chart on next page). Enterex is sweetened with Splenda (sucralose). In fact, Enterex claims that it contains no added sugar, fructose, or corn syrup.

Enterex Glucose Control is available in Heavenly Chocolate, Tempt-ing Vanilla, and Luscious Strawberry.

Pros: Low in saturated fat and cholesterol. No sugar added. Lactose and gluten free. Excellent source of 25 vitamins and minerals.

Cons: High in fat (9 g). Contains Splenda (sucralose).

We tasted the Tempting Vanilla and found a rich, vanilla taste and creamy texture. Reviewers of CARE Magazine reported that Enterex tastes like a normal milkshake and that it had no aftertaste.

Estee Low-G Bars

Estee was the first company in the United States to offer sugar-free products over 60 years ago. The newest offering from Estee is a line of Low-G products that have a glycemic Index of less than 55, which is con-sidered a “Low GI” rating. This means that these foods are digested slowly while gradually increasing blood sugar and insulin needs. Therefore, you feel full longer, which enables you to better manage your food intake.

The first Estee Low-G product is a line of snack bars made from soy protein. They provide 140 to 150 calories and contain 6 to 7 g total fat with 3.5 g of that from saturated fats. The sodium is low (between 60 to 125 mg) and the addition of inulin and flax helps keep fiber high (10 g per bar). The bars are sweetened with sucralose (Splenda), which keeps the sugar (1 g) and carbohydrates (16 to 17 g) low.

The Low-G bars come in three varieties—Peanut Butter, Mocha Java, and Wild Berry.

Pros: Low glycemic index of under 55. Carbs and sugar are low.

Cons: Total fat (6 to 7 g) and saturated fat (3.5 g) are high. Sweetened with Splenda (sucralose).

We were unable to try these bars but like that they are made from soy and flax.

Old Orchard Healthy Balance

For consumers with sugar-restrictive diets struggling to find a “light” variety of fruit juice to fit their needs, the search is made easier by this Old Orchard Brand—Healthy Balance. These drinks are 27% real fruit juice and contain only 6 g of sugar per 8 oz serving, which results in a 70% reduction in calories from top juice brands and 45% less calories and carbohydrates than the leading “light” lines of juice drinks. The line currently includes Apple, Apple Cranberry, Apple Kiwi, Apple Raspberry, Strawberry, Cran-berry, Cranberry Grape, Cranberry Raspberry, Grape, Pomegranate, Pomegranate Cranberry, Ruby Red Grapefruit, and White Grape variet-ies. These juice drinks are fortified with 100% vitamin C and contain no artificial colors, additives, or preservatives.

Pros: Reduced in carbohydrates and sugar. 100% DV vitamin C.

Cons: Artificially sweetened with Splenda (sucralose).

Refreshing and enjoyable.

Fifty50 Low Glycemic Foods

If you have a sweet tooth, here are some “treats” that you should check out. Fifty50 offers a line of sweet products designed for glucose control. Their line contains over 30 items that include sugar-free choco-late, hard candies, fruit spreads, cookies, peanut butter, syrup, cream-filled wafers, oatmeal, crystalline fructose sweetener, and even a graham cracker pie crust. By substituting low glycemic ingredients, such as fructose, sucralose, sorbitol, and maltodextrin for sugar, all of the prod-ucts have a low glycemic score. But you won’t find a big difference in the nutrition numbers, especially total calories and carbohydrate grams. The main difference from regular food is in the amount and type of sugar.

Pros: Low glycemic index foods.

Cons: Still high in calories, carbohydrates, and total fat. Contains alternative sweeteners such as sucralose and sorbitol, a sugar alcohol. Fifty50 products do not provide a glycemic index for their products.

You may wonder why this company name is “Fifty50”? The owner, Gary Russell, is a type 1 diabetic who was recommended a low glycemic diet by his dietitian, Pat Gawdun. The company donates 50% of their profits to diabetes research.

Alvarado Street Bakery Diabetic Lifestyle Bread

Bread is inherently high in carbohydrates and when it is made with white flour, bread has a high glycemic index. Alvarado Street Bakery makes a Diabetic Lifestyle Bread from 100% sprouted whole grains. It was submitted for testing to the Glycemic Research Institute in Wash-ington, D.C., and was clinically proven to be Low Glycemic with a Low Glycemic Load when fed to people with diabetes. The actual glycemic index reported is 5 on the glucose scale (0 to 100) and the glycemic load is 0.9 per serving. This bread does not contain refined sugars, added oil, or flour. In fact, the ingredients listed are sprouted organic whole wheat berries, filtered water, wheat gluten, organic dates, organic raisins, sea salt, fresh yeast, soy lecithin, and cultured wheat. The bread has 80 calo-ries per slice with 0 g total fat, 15 g total carbohydrates, 2 g fiber, and 2 g total sugars.

Pros: Very low glycemic index. Organic. Fat free and low in carbohy-drates (15 g) and sugar (2 g).

Cons: None

I enjoyed the grainy and hearty texture and taste of this bread. Great toasted with a swipe of peanut butter.

Control Your Blood sugar with Foods

©2008 Linda McDonald Associates, Inc., dba, SUPERMARKET SAVVY®, Houston, TX 77042, www.supermarketsavvy.com

Why Control Blood Sugar?

To control diabetes. To feel fuller longer, eat less and lose weight. To reduce the risk of heart disease. To increase physical endurance.

What is the Glycemic Index (GI)?

The glycemic index (GI) groups foods based on their ability to raise blood glucose. Foods are grouped as having a high (higher than 70), middle (55-70), or low (lower than 55) GI value. Foods with high GI values will produce higher blood glucose levels during the first two hours after eating than foods with a low GI number. Note that glycemic indexes of foods were determined based on testing a portion of food that contains 50 g carbohydrates. Therefore, a high blood glucose response from a low GI food can happen if a larger portion size is eaten.

What is the Glycemic Load (GL)?

The glycemic load (GL) was developed in an attempt to describe the glucose-raising effects of different amounts of carbohydrates. The value takes into account portion sizes. The formula to determine the Glycemic load of a food is GI/100 x Net Carbs (Total Carbohydrates (g) – Dietary Fiber (g).

Classification GI Range Examples

Low GI 55 or less

Most fruits and veggies (except potatoes, watermelon), grainy breads, pasta, legumes, milk, products extremely low in carbohydrates (fish, eggs, meat, nuts, and oils)

Medium GI 56 - 69

Whole wheat products, brown and long grain rice, sweet potato, whole grain bread, cereal, and pasta.

High GI 70 - 99Corn flakes, baked potato, watermelon, processed rice, croissant, white bread, candy.

100 straight glucose

Factors that Alter the Glycemic Index:

Whether a food is eaten alone or in combination with other foods

Components of a food besides carbohydrates, such as the amount of protein or fat

How the food was prepared

The ripeness of a fruit or vegetable

Your own body’s metabolism of the food

Five Factors that Determine the Glycemic Index Content of a Food:

The level of processing

Fiber content

Type of carbohydrate—simple or complex

Fat and protein content

Grain size

Tips for Choosing Foods to Lower Blood Sugar:

Choose high fiber, unprocessed breakfast cereals that contain oats, bran or barley instead of processed cereals with little fiber.

Opt for whole grain breads rather than white flour breads.

Replace white potatoes with yams or sweet potatoes, long grain or brown rice, or whole wheat pasta.

Instead of snacking on processed cookies, candies or other sweets, reach for fresh fruit and nuts.

Select fresh whole fruits rather than frozen, canned fruits or juices.

Pick fresh foods over refined and processed foods.

Eat carbohydrate foods in combination with protein foods. Example: Crackers and cheese or an apple with peanut butter.

Spread carbohydrate foods throughout the day rather than eating a large portion at one meal.

V8 Soups

For the past 75 years, V8 juices have been an easy way to drink your vegetables. Now you can make V8 a daily habit with the introduction of Campbell’s V8 Soups, a line of pureed soups that provide a full serving of vegetables in every bowl. This is good news for seven out of 10 adults who are not meeting the daily recommended intake for vegetables.

The soups are low in fat (0 to 3 g) and saturated fat (0 to 1 g) and do not contain artificial flavors or preservatives. Additionally, several of the varieties provide good or excellent sources of nutrients, such as vita-mins A and C, potassium, and fiber (2 to 4 g). Each soup is packaged in a fresh-sealed box that provides two servings of about 1 cup each. These vegetable puree soups are available in five flavors—Golden Butternut Squash, Garden Broccoli, Tomato Herb, Southwestern Corn, and Sweet Red Pepper.

Pros: A full serving of vegetables in every cup. Low in fat (0 to 3 g). A good or excellent source of vitamins A and C, except for the Southwest-ern Corn soup.

Cons: Like most V8 products, the sodium is high (590 to 750 mg per serving). Unfortunately, you can’t heat the soup in the carton. It must be moved to a bowl for microwaving or to a pan for stovetop heating. Although the soups say that they are 100% vegetarian, the Squash, Broc-coli, and Red Pepper soups contain milk.

V8 soups are made with a distinctive combination of vegetables and savory seasonings blended to a velvety smoothness. We tried sev-eral varieties and found them tasty and filling. Our favorite is the Golden Butternut Squash

Pacific Natural Low Sodium Soups

Salt is the ingredient to lower this year. Pacific Natural follows the trend set by Campbell’s (see September 2008) to reduce the sodium in soups. But Pacific Natural Low Sodium soups win the prize by beating Campbell’s on total sodium per serving by 100 to 200 mg per 1-cup serv-ing. Pacific Natural Low Sodium soups contain between 280 to 380 mg sodium and 90 to 110 calories per 1-cup serving. The light-sodium ver-sions of three of its top-selling creamy soups are Organic Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato, Organic Creamy Tomato, and Organic Creamy But-ternut Squash. They are available in 32-oz, shelf-stable aseptic packages.

The Organic Roasted Red Pepper and Tomato Light Sodium Soups were named one of the “125 Best Packaged Foods for Women ‘08” by Women’s Health magazine in the September 2008 issue.

Pros: Lower in sodium than regular soups (280 to 280 mg/1 cup) with no MSG. Organic.

Cons: None

Compare the nutrients in this Butternut Squash soup with the V8 variety above. The comparison is similar except for the sodium (750 mg vs. 280 mg).

Live Bright Bars

We drink milk to build strong bones. We eat fiber to promote diges-tive health. We eat additional whole grains, fiber, and antioxidants for heart health. Kellogg’s asks why our approach to brain health should be any different. Their new Live Bright brain-health bars with 100 mg of DHA Omega-3 help support brain health like calcium helps support bone health.

The question is whether 100 mg of DHA Omega-3 in one bar will be enough to benefit your health? The statistics on the amount of DHA adults get each day are dismal—about 20 mg. So the 100 mg in these bars is five times more DHA than most Americans get in their daily diet. But this is a lot lower than the 500 mg per day recommended by the American Dietetic Association. The American Heart Association and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend at least two servings of fish, especially fatty fish, each week. Since a 3-oz serving of fatty fish like salmon contains between 1,000 and 2,000 mg of Omega-3, this averages out to about 500 mg per day.

The Live Bright bars contain 150 calories with 50 of them coming from fat, and most of the fat is saturated (3.5 g). Flavors include Dark Chocolate Vanilla and Double Chocolate. Find them in the health supple-ment aisle of supermarkets in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Houston, and Detroit. You also can purchase Live Bright Bars online at www.Amazon.com.

Pros: Contain 100 mg of DHA Omega-3. Good source of fiber (3 g) and protein (6 g).

Cons: High in total fat (5 g) and saturated fat (3.5 g).

I prefer my Omega-3s in fish, but if you don’t like fish or have an allergy to seafood, Live Bright bars are one of many fortified Omega-3 food products on the market.

Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers

Here is a great idea for a quick, healthy meal on the go. Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers are compete meals that do not require a freezer or refrigeration. In fact, they can be kept in your desk or back pack for up to 365 days. When you are ready for your healthy meal, just open the package, add water, mix the ingredients that are packaged separately, and pop the container in the microwave. The entire meal will be ready in about 5 minutes.

The line includes six varieties—Sweet & Sour Chicken, Sesame Teri-yaki Chicken, Ziti & Meat Sauce, Rotini & Zesty Marinara Sauce, South-western Style Chicken, and Szechwan Beef with Asian Style Noodles. Like all Healthy Choice products, they meet the nutrition criteria for “healthy” and the American Heart Association nutrition guidelines.

Pros: Low fat (2.5 to 6 g), good source of fiber (3 to 7 g), shelf stable.

Cons: None

The rice in the Southwestern Style Chicken was fluffy and the sauce spicy with bits of corn, tomatoes, green peppers and chicken. I recom-mend this for a quick meal on the go.

HomeFree Cookies

If you have a child who has food allergies, they will love these cook-ies. HomeFree products are free of peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, and dairy. They also are certified organic and contain at least ½ serving of whole grains (8 g). They are not gluten-free and contain soy lecithin. Addition-ally, they are made without corn sweeteners, artificial colors or flavors, MSG, and genetically modified organisms. All HomeFree products are vegan. Nutritionally, these cookies are similar to regular cookies in calo-ries, total fat, and sugar.

HomeFree Cookies come in three varieties—Chocolate Chip, Choco-late Chocolate Chip, and Oatmeal and are available in a regular and a mini-size cookie. HomeFree also carries coffee cakes and a line of baking ingredients.

Pros: Contains no peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, or dairy ingredients. There are no artificial colors or preservatives. Organic and kosher.

Cons: They are not gluten-free and do contain a soy ingredient. The fat content is between 33% and 36% of total calories. Eat in moderation.

The cookies are delicious and a good choice for anyone with food allergies to peanuts, tree nuts, eggs or milk.

Total 100% Nutrition Cereal

Total Cereal now boasts that it contains 100% DV of 11 vitamins and minerals. Compare this to Kellogg’s Raisin Bran that contains 25% DV of seven vitamins and minerals with just 2% DV of calcium. The 100% DV in the Total Cereals includes calcium and 25% DV vitamin D compared to just 10% in Kellogg’s Raisin Bran. Most leading cereals contain 0 to 15% DV of calcium and 0 to 10% DV of vitamin D. This is great news for those who are concerned about bone health. All of the Total 100% Nutri-tion cereals contain a full serving of whole grains (16 g) and are a good-to-excellent source of fiber (3 to 5 g). Calories run from 100 to 170 with a sugar content between 5 and 17 g. The Whole Grain flakes are the low-est in calories and sugar. The reformulated Total Cereals include Raisin Bran, Whole Grain, Cinnamon Crunch, Honey Clusters, and Cranberry Crunch.

Pros: Low fat (0.5 to 2.5 g), good to excellent source of fiber (3 to 5 g), and all provide a full serving of whole grains (16 g). With 100% of 11 vita-mins and minerals, you won’t need a daily vitamin pill.

Cons: None

The Whole Grain Cereal was not as crispy as the Kellogg’s Raisin Bran and had a slight medicinal taste. We recently saw an ad for the 100% Nutrition cereals with Omega-3s, but were unable to find the prod-uct in our local supermarket or find a press release.

Bird’s Eye Steamfresh Brown Rice

If you are looking for convenience, the Bird’s Eye Steamfresh line is for you. Originally introduced in 2007 with a line of fresh, frozen veg-etables, Steamfresh now includes a line of rice—long-grain white rice, whole-grain brown rice, and long-grain white rice with mixed vegetables. Steamfresh rice comes in 10-oz bags that provide two 1-cup servings.

The Steamfresh veggie line includes Singles (Sweet Corn, Baby Brus-sels Sprouts, and Sweet Peas) that contain four single-serve bags, or the Steamfresh Selects, Mixtures, and Premium Selects that come in a wide variety of choices. A 12-oz bag serves four.

Steamfresh veggies and rice go directly from your freezer to the microwave and steam in their own bags. This eliminates the need to clean, cut, or chop the vegetables and to clean the pot after cooking. These veggie and rice dishes do not contain seasonings, even salt, so you can season them to your taste after cooking.

Pros: Quick-and-convenient rice and veggies. No added salt.

Cons: None

The brown rice is a great way to include a whole grain in your meals.
