What is tribulation? How many of you have experienced pain and tribulation? The word “tribulation” (Greek “thlipsis”) means “to press” (as pressing grapes), “to press together”, “to press hard upon”, and refers to a time of opposition, affliction and distress (Thayer).

1. What is the Great Tribulation? Jesus refers to a time of great d____________ (Matt. 24:21) before he returns (Matt. 24:29-30).

This unprecedented time of suffering is also referred to in Dan. 12:1. In Jer. 30:7, thought also to refer to this, it is called a

“time of t____________ for Jacob.” In Revelation it is the period when the dragon (Satan), the beast out of the sea and the

beast out of the earth rule over the inhabitants of earth (Rev. 13:1-18).

2. Will Christians have to pass through this? Dispensational Pre-millennialists say ‘No’ while Historical Pre-millennialists, A-

Millennialists and Post-Millennialists say ‘Yes’ though with differing interpretations. We note that Christians throughout the

history of the church have experienced persecution and many have been martyred for their faith. Jesus does warn his followers

that they will suffer persecution (Matt. 24:9, Jn. 15:18-20) and that many will even turn away from the faith (apostasy)

(Matt. 24:10).

3. Who is the antichrist? Jesus does not speak of an antichrist but speaks about the installing of the a

______________________________________ in the holy place (Matt. 24:15), quoting Dan. 9:27, where this is set up by a

“ruler who will come”. The word antichrist (adversary of Christ) only occurs in 1 Jn. 2:18, 22, 4:3 and 2 Jn. 7. However, Paul

refers to a m_______________________________ in 2Thess. 2:3-4, and John wr ites of a f___________________________

in Rev. 16:13, 19:20 who is equated with the “beast that came out of the earth” (Rev. 13:11-18). The final fate of both Satan

and his antichrist is shown us in Rev. 19:20, 20:10.

4. What is the place of Israel in the end times? Ever since the occupation of Palestine by Jewish settlers in the early 1900s and the

establishment of the modern state of Israel in 1948, the land and state of Israel has featured prominently in end time scenarios.

Some people predict a return of Jesus to Jerusalem, the re-building of the temple there, and the last great battle, Armageddon,

fought there, based largely on OT prophecies. Others say however, that all God’s promises to Israel have been fulfilled in

Christ (2 Cor. 1:20, Gal. 3:26-28). Jews, like all other people, are saved only by faith, through the atoning work of Chr ist

(Rom. 4:9-16).

Questions to think about

1. Have you experienced suffering for the sake of Christ? Did Christ ever say that his followers would be exempt from suffering? What does Jesus promise us in time of suffering? See Acts 5:41, Phil. 1:29, Rom. 8:17, 2 Tim. 1:8, 1 Pet. 4:16.

2. The Bible warns us that the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. How can we resist him? (1 Pet. 5:8-11, 1 Jn. 4:4)

3. How should we view the things that are happening in the world today? How do you think we should pray for Israel and for Arabs living in Israel as well as in neighbouring countries? See Ps. 122:1, Matt. 5:9, 1 Tim. 2:1-6, 2 Pet. 3:9.
