Have you been hearing a lot about “graphic novels”lately?

You may be wondering what exactly graphic novelsare. Simply put, graphic novels are comics in book format. There’s a reason why they’ve become a buzz-word lately – comics publishing is experiencing a renaissance. Talented young artists are forging newpaths in storytelling and art. Comics from Japan,Korea, France, and other foreign countries are findingnew fans in the United States, and publishers are ex-panding beyond superheroes to almost all the genresfound in prose.

Many of the graphic novels which have received themost attention over the past few years have been intendedfor adult readers. Ironically, though comics are oftenperceived as a “juvenile” medium, it hasn’t always beeneasy to find titles specifically aimed at children. But thatsituation is changing!

More high-quality graphic novelsfor kids and young adults are beingpublished now, and all signs indicatethat the category will be growing foryears to come. Graphic novels have theunique ability to appeal equally to reluc-tant and proficient readers, and at atime when “visual literacy” is becomingmore and more important, graphic novels can be criticallyimportant in the learning process.

If you’re unfamiliar with graphic novels, though, howcan you find the right books for your kids? The answer is similar to how you find other books: reviews, bestseller lists, and recommendations. Most major trade journals, such asSchool Library Journal, Booklist, and Publishers Weekly, include graphic novel reviews. Newspapers and parentingmagazines are now reviewing graphic novels, as well.

Diamond publishes monthly graphic novel bestsellerlists on its website for librarians and teachers,

www.DiamondBookShelf.com. These lists usually include a number of titles aimed at young readers. TheBookShelf website also includes core lists of graphic novelsby age group, which is especially helpful if you are juststarting your collection.

One of the best ways to find good graphic novels is toget recommendations from comics fans. Kids and teenswho are ravenous comics readers will have no troubletelling you the titles they enjoy. Keep a running list andsearch for reviews of the books they recommend. If youhave trouble finding reviews, another great resource is the Graphic Novels in Librarieslistserv, http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GNLIB-L/. This listserv includes many librarianswho are graphic novel experts, and they are happy toanswer questions from the most basic to the most obscure.

We hope that the more you learn about graphic novels, the more excited you becomeabout their ability to connect with andinspire young readers!

Are Graphic Novels “good for you”?“When Brandeis Hillel Day School in San Francisco offered a library-sponsored

book club as an elective class, no one ever imagined that we would have a waiting

list. After one semester the Graphic Novels Book Group elective became the talk

of the middle school…. I did not anticipate the ripple effects of this ‘reinvented’

book club…. Instead of heralding a regression from the art of the written word,

we are finding that graphic novels are providing a new bridge to it.”

— Knowledge Quest Jan/Feb 2008 (by Jonathan Seyfried, librarian,

Brandeis Hillel Day School)

“The comics medium by its very nature is a ‘multimedia medium.’ It is a single

unified medium made up of two distinct media: text and still imagery. By

teaching your students to read and create comic books, you are teaching them to

analyze the very nature of information, a 21st century skill.”

— Gene Yang (author, American Born Chinese)

“With graphic novels’ hypnotic power to pull kids into a story, they’re also perfect for promoting

recreational or free voluntary reading – one of the most effective ways to increase literacy and create

lifelong readers.”

— School Library Journal, March 2008 (by Michele Gorman, librarian,

Public Library of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County, NC)

“To read a comic requires an active participation in the text that is quite different

from reading prose: The reader must make the connections between the images

and the text and create the links between each panel and the page as a whole….

[T]his kind of literacy is not only new but vital in interacting with and succeeding

in our multimedia world. If you’ve ever struggled to make the connections in

reading a graphic novel while a teen reader whizzes through it, you’ve experi-

enced how different this type of literacy is.”

— Horn Book, March 2006 (by Robin Brenner, librarian, Cary Memorial

Library, Lexington, MA)
