MODBURY MARIGOLDS DAY The day we all spring clean the town

Have you noticed things or areas of the town that could do with a bit of TLC? Tired looking corners of the town? Places that could do with a few flowers planting or seeds sowing? What needs weeding? Dirty street signs? Something that could do with a coat of paint or varnish? Hanging baskets or planters placed and filled? Now is the time for some self-help, community spirit and DIY. There must have been times when you have said “I wish THEY would...” Then please tell us about it or them.

Due to local government cut backs, things have changed quite a bit recently. In the past “THEY” used to sweep, plant, weed kill and do all the jobs we all took for granted. Now THEY have not got the money (unless we all want to pay a lot more council tax) so “THEY” have to become “WE or US”. The Parish Council now have several Councillors trained to weed kill and patch very minor roads, but WE the residents can do more to help care for our town. It is only 4 years since we won Best Kept Larger Village after all. So let’s rise to the challenge of a fun spring cleaning day, to smarten up our town for the benefit of residents and summer visitors alike. Modbury Marigolds Day will be a very sociable day teaming up with new and old residents alike, all taking part and doing our bit while having fun doing it. There may even be prizes!

Following a visit to Lanveoc, our twin town in France, you may remember in an earlier Messenger that they have a Civic Day – we are going one better- we are going to pull on our rubber gloves, roll up our sleeves and have a Modbury Marigolds Day on Saturday April 14th - ending with a celebration of our efforts in the Pavilion. We want everyone involved: children, parents, grandparents, friends and neighbours.

You decide what needs doing At this stage all we are asking is that you put the date in your new diaries and tell us as soon as possible what jobs WE all could do to smarten up Modbury.

Remember these are the kind of tasks that most of us can do with a pair of Marigolds and a bit of elbow grease like cleaning, weeding, pruning and painting; tasks that can be done with hand tools.

How to tell us • EMAIL: [email protected]. Put Marigolds Day as the subject and tell us the location and task that

needs doing or call Nicky on 01548 830193. • SNAP & SEND: Snap the offending area on your mobile and email it to Nicky at the above address with the

location and what needs doing. • FACEBOOK: We’re setting up a Facebook page where you’ll also be able to post your tasks and share

ideas. • PARISH OFFICE: Drop a note through the door with

your sugges t ion and mark i t MODBURY MARIGOLDS. Please leave a name and contact number in case we need to talk to you.

Remember Marigolds, you will be seeing much more of them in the coming months but for now please let us know what jobs you would like to see done. All suggestions are welcome from everyone. This is a joint project by the Parish Council and the Modbury Society, with help from the Modbury Twinning Association, for all the residents of the community.

Apologies for an error in last month’s Parish Council News. Our new councillor, Margaret Middleton, would like to point out that she owned the greengrocer’s and pet shop Petty Cache in Modbury Court and not Pips. The confusion was because the shop had previously been the petshop All for Paws, The Hat Studio and prior to that was Pips the Greengrocers.

Proposed development by Bloor Homes: West of the current Palm Cross development, Phase 2 (site H). Response from Parish Council and Neighbourhood Plan Group Some of you will have attended the public consultation held by Bloor Homes in November at which they invited comments on their proposals  for approximately 40 homes on this site.

The site is one of those allocated by South Hams District Council in the Joint Local Plan (JLP). The JLP is due to be examined by the independent Inspectors in late January-February.

At the time of writing the developer had not put in a formal planning application but is likely to do so in the near future.

The Neighbourhood Plan Group and the Parish Council have submitted a response to Bloor Homes about  the outline plans shown at their consultation.

We have made a number of what we believe are constructive comments and suggestions and want to follow these up with discussions with the developers and SHDC.

The full text of the response can be found on the Neighbourhood Plan, website www.modburynpg.co.uk and the Parish Council website www.modburypc.co.uk.  Paper copies can be found at the Parish Council Office, on the Parish Council noticeboard and at the Post Office. If you were not aware of details of the proposals, we hope that this will be helpful in considering your response in the event of a formal planning application.

The full text of the response from the Modbury NPG will be published in the February Modbury Messenger.

Ann Turner, Chair Modbury NPG

Modbury Parish Council News At this month’s Council Meeting held on December 11th 2017 there was one parishioner present for the Public Forum but he had no questions to ask. We received no reports from either the Police or District Councillor this month as both were away. Our County Councillor reported that 91% 0f Devon schools are good or outstanding and that the recent inspection of Modbury Primary School by OFSTED found it to still have a “Good“ rating.

Devon has a good stock of salt should it be needed over the winter. (Current forecasts for Devon suggest a mild winter - which could mean a hard one, this caused some mirth). 95% of waste from Devon is now sent to the Energy from Waste Plant in Plymouth.

There is still a vacancy for Parish Councillor but no new applications have been received so far. If anyone is interested in the vacancy they should apply through the Parish Clerk.

Five planning applications were discussed, all were supported but two with further points to consider. The problem with the siting of the bus stop at the New Mills Industrial Estate was discussed and is an ongoing concern.

A new seat has now been installed at the recently tided up entrance to Cromwell Park. This was kindly donated to the Parish by Mick and Rosemarie Merritt and will be much appreciated by those walking the ‘Modbury Mile’.

At a recent county wide meeting of P3 (Parish Paths) volunteers, Modbury was flagged up as being the most active town of the 143 parishes in Devon. Well done Brian Weeks and Mike Oakins and all those who help and support their efforts. Still on footpaths the Parish Council continue to chase up SHDC who are responsible for the much used bridge over the Aylstone Brook into the Millennium Meadow which links the east side of the town to the centre.

Councillors have all been sent the final draft of the Neighbourhood Plan to read before it is on next month’s agenda.

The Council were given information about the current plans for the Modbury Marigolds Day on April 14th. A Facebook page for information and an email address for projects and volunteers will be set up in the New Year. Most of the groups and organisations in the town will be contacted in January to ask for their help and support for what it is hoped to be a fun, practical and rewarding day. Just by giving a few hours of time we can all get the town ready for the visitors, the May Fair and most importantly give us pride in Modbury as a great place to live. Nicky Shepley

Any enquiries to Charlotte: [email protected] or 831028

This will be followed at 7.00 for 7.30 by our Annual Dinner, and members will be contacted by e-mail with details shortly. Joyeuse année!

The Christmas Lights committee would like to send a big THANK-YOU to all the people involved in putting up the Christmas lights and the Christmas trees in the town. They made the Lights On night at the end of November such a great success and a safe event for everybody. There are far too many people to mention, but without your help, Modbury would not be such a bright and vibrant place over the Christmas period. The Lights On night, the lights and trees are funded by generous donations from the public, Modbury traders and local organisations – so another big THANK-YOU.

On a sad note, the team putting up the lights this year did so with heavy hearts, as one of their stalwarts, Mark Williams, sadly passed away in October. He will be missed by all the other lighting “elves”, as he will be by many other people and organisations in Modbury. One of these, the Fireworks Club, have made a very generous donation to the Christmas lights, in his memory and to support another community event that Mark was passionate and proud to support.

Santa Saved the Day A sugar paste Santa, aided by his very able modeller, Julie Turner saved the day at our December meeting, when the booked speaker was unexpectedly unable to attend. With little more than some fondant icing, colouring pastes and a cocktail stick Santa and his sweet friends appeared before our very eyes and no doubt attempts to replicate Julie's skills will adorn festive cakes throughout Modbury this season. Julie has a very busy on-line cake business and mixes up mammoth vats of cake batter, particularly at Christmas, so we are indebted to her for finding the time to attend our meeting to mark two year's of Modbury WI. Members were so enthralled with Julie's sugarcraft art that  she was quickly signed up to give us a half day workshop next autumn. The meeting was topped off by a celebratory bring and share supper.

Connie O'Neill, Modbury WI president, attended the Modbury Remembrance Day Service and laid a wreath at the War Memorial on behalf of the group. Connie led our representatives at The Avon Group of WIs Christmas Carol Service at Ringmore Church. Our Christmas lunch, held again at the White Hart, Modbury, marked the end of the 2017 calendar of events.

New events are in store for 2018 and to ensure everyone's interests are embraced a questionnaire has been circulated to

members to aid planning for the future. The first meeting of the New Year will take place at 7.30pm on Friday, 5th January 2018 at the MARS Pavilion, Modbury, when the new programme will be available. BANISH THOSE WINTER BLUES! It's been more than three and a half years since a Lottery funded project, to encourage the over 50s into doing more exercise, ran some initial sessions at MARS Pavilion, taught by local qualified and experienced instructor, Jill Gubbins. The classes continued after the funding ended, with two classes on offer: the first, moderately paced aerobics plus weight and band strengthening work, suitable for most age groups, the second focussing on movement and chair based strengthening activities, to maintain independence for older people or those rebuilding their health. These classes run, from 10th January 2018, on Wednesdays, 9:15 - 10:00 and 10:15 - 11:00, at a very reasonable cost of £5 paid as you come along. Alongside the fitness gains, two other important advantages of joining in any class are the mental stimulus activity provokes, especially in this dementia aware era, and the social exchange provided, where fun and a friendly word counter isolation and low mood. There is always room for new faces, so as the winter months hit, when it is harder to go out for exercise and to end up less active with associated health risks, why not give Jill's indoor classes a try! For more information about what either class entails, or to discuss similar classes Jill holds elsewhere on different days, please call Jill on 01548 810651.

IVYBRIDGE U3A The January General Meeting of Ivybridge U3A will be  held on Monday January 15th at 2 pm at the Watermark, Ivybridge.   Our Speaker Mike Haywood will talk about “The Voyage of the Mayflower in 1620. The Myth and the Reality”.

PAUSE FOR THOUGHT Let’s continue CLANGING

Last month I talked about being more Active - this month it’s Notice

Last week I saw this on Facebook and thought how apt it was for Notice

Questions to ask your children after school instead of how was your day? - What made you smile today? - Can you tell me an example of kindness? - What did you do that was creative? - Who did you sit with at lunchtime? - Was anyone in your class not there today? - Tell me something you know today that you didn’t know yesterday? - What was the hardest rule to follow today? - If you could change one thing about your day today, what would it be? - What made your teacher smile? - What made your teacher frown? - If you could switch seats with anyone in class, who would it be and why? - What kind of person were you today

This is about emotional intelligence. By noticing our and others’ behaviour in response to everyday situations helps us to become more away of ourselves, our feelings and what makes us ‘tick’. The best feeling of all is to feel good. We can help ourselves to feel ‘good’ by noticing things around us and responding to them positively, if it’s a rainy day or its cold, notice the clouds, the colour of the sky, the birds. If you notice that someone else is sad, give them a hug, a smile, some help. Noticing and acting on what you see will give you a sense of achievement and will help your wellbeing, both emotional and physically as the two go hand in hand.

I love this time of year, crisp winter days; in the midst of winter we can see sign of the beginnings of new life, the frogs coming out of hibernation to find a mate, the first snow drops, we hear the winter song of the robin as he sits high on a bare branch, his red plumage standing out proudly. Every day, notice what is going on around you, notice your neighbours and your friends and use your emotional intelligence to respond.
