Higher Brownston is of historic interest, being a magnificent example of a true Devon longhouse. There are as few as 130 longhouses remaining in the county, most of them being on Dartmoor. A true longhouse was a three room dwelling divided by a "cross passage" separating the living quarters from "the shippen" where the animals sheltered in winter.
