This Group Planner is a resource for creating dynamic, diverse and experiential itineraries for your clients.

It is a practical guide that will assist you in organising your group visit to the region.

Providing truly authentic experiences, dramatic perspectives, dreamtime moments and sharing the beauty and uniqueness of our World Heritage listed surrounds is a priority and a privilege for our operators.

The Blue Mountains Lithgow and Oberon Region offers a world class array of nature, cultural, historical, lifestyle and adventure activities and experiences.

We look forward to welcoming your group to our region.

The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is Australia’s most accessible wilderness. Stretching over one million hectares, the region is an inspiring and diverse mix of rainforest, blue-hazed valleys, golden stone escarpments, canyons, tall forests and windswept heathlands. It is one of Australia’s iconic landscapes and has received National Landscape status in recognition of its world class experiences of environmental and cultural significance.

Despite the descriptor, the Blue Mountains are not, as the name suggests, mountains, but in fact are dissected sandstone plateaux which shelter a rich diversity of plant and animal life. There are rare and ancient plants and isolated animal populations tucked away in its deep gorges and more than one hundred species of eucalypts (gum trees) grow here.

The Greater Blue Mountains received World Heritage Listing in 2000 in recognition of its outstanding universal natural value and conservation of biological diversity.

Six Aboriginal language groups treasure their connections with the land — the Darug, Gundungurra, Dharawal, Darkinjung, Wanaruah and Wiradjuri people. These associations include longstanding cultural practices passed down through generations — such as ceremony, songs, stories and art, as well as knowledge of landforms, climate, plants and animal life.

The region is Australia’s ‘cradle of conservation’ renowned for its bushwalking and inspiring scenery. This wonderful wilderness is on Sydney’s doorstep but it can feel a world away.

A SPECIAL PLACE

2 www.visitbluemountains.com.au

Ten times older than the Grand Canyon, the Blue Mountains Lithgow and Oberon Region is a true natural wilderness, a World Heritage area less than two hours from Australia’s biggest city yet offering you more than 300 walking tracks covering hundreds of kilometres.

It’s a place where you can see living fossils — the Wollemi Pine — older than history itself. Visit an ancient landscape carved when the earth was young, a landscape that continues to evolve today. You can go exploring on foot, on horseback, in four wheel drives or try canyoning, caving or climbing.

This wonderland can be shared in so many ways, because it’s a place you experience rather than visit. Whatever the activity the natural highs of the Blue Mountains Region will uplift the mind and spirit for years to come.

Until now, it has been physically impossible for tourists to view a collection of famous Australian attractions in less than two weeks; such is the tyranny of distance throughout ‘the land down under’.

Not anymore. From beautiful Sydney Harbour to the mysteries of the Great Barrier Reef; from the spectacular Blue Mountains to the giant monolith Uluru; a classical collection of Australian tourist highlights can be viewed in one session at Aitken’s Australia in the Round at Glenbrook, NSW.

Visitors will enjoy the tranquility of this work of art and the complementary static display of changing landscapes, flora and fauna. Lose yourself in the wilderness as you stand, meditate and absorb the sounds of the bush.

The Harbour-dominated beauty of Australia’s Emerald City; the rugged mystery of the Blue Mountains; toughness and brilliant colours of Australia’s outback; and natural beauty of beaches scattered along endless stretches of coastline. Add the fertile riches of Australia’s rural heartland and the character and excitement of Queensland’s fabulous Gold Coast and you have a fascinating collage of life in modern Australia – all captured within the 213 square metres of wall space at Aitken’s Australia In The Round Panorama at Glenbrook, NSW.

The Panorama is strategically placed in Wascoe Street, Glenbrook – just 74 kilometres along the Great Western Highway from Sydney. Some 300 metres west of the Blue Mountains Information Centre on the Great Western Highway and a leisurely 10 minute walk (four blocks) from Glenbrook Railway Station, the Panorama is conveniently located for tourists and residents alike.

Aitken’s Australia in the Round Panorama at Glenbrook is already attracting considerable international attention.

It is an outstanding addition to the tourist attractions of the Blue Mountains of NSW.

Quick facts:• Walls measuring 6.5 metres high with visitors platform ensures a

clear view for all

• The enormity of the physical painting task is best explained by the fact that every shade of colour had to be mixed to an exact recipe

• Some 271 jars of acrylic paint were used to complete the masterpiece

• There are over 150 examples of natural Australian flora and fauna – along with 10 tonnes of rock and timber, and four tonnes of outback red soil

All Aboard! Groups can experience the excitement of a journey on a real steam train or vintage railmotor in the heart of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area.

An engineering masterpiece of the 1860’s the Zig Zag Railway is nostalgic for some, historically significant for others and just plain fun for most. Today the Zig Zag Railway is a popular tourist railway and whatever your groups interest this is a ‘must do’ inclusion in your next group tour to the Region.

Travel through two tunnels and over three magnificent sandstone viaducts with spectacular views as the train wends its way through bushland and descends to the Lithgow Valley.

This historic full size narrow gauge railway is located at Clarence, 10km east of Lithgow in the Blue Mountains, NSW, Australia. Originally constructed to transport people and produce from the Western Plains of NSW, and later iron ore deposits found in Lithgow, to Sydney. The sandstone viaducts were replaced by a ten tunnel deviation in 1910.

Large groups may want to take advantage of organizing a special ‘themed’ or special occasion train trip on the Blue Train which consists of South Australian and Queensland carriages dating from 1889.

The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area is Australia’s most accessible wilderness.

Tens of thousands of years of caring for Country by Aboriginal people, the efforts of bushwalkers to save the Blue Gum Forest in the 1930’s, Myles Dunphy’s vision for a Greater Blue Mountains Park, and more contemporary campaigns of the Colong Foundation and other conservation groups including the Blue Mountains Conservation Society, community, tourism and all levels of government led to the inscription of the Greater Blue Mountains on the World Heritage list in November 2000 for its outstanding universal natural values.

This wonderful wilderness is on Sydney’s doorstep but it can feel a world away.

Below are some ‘QUICK FACTS’ that can be used by Coach Captains and Tour Leaders to assist them in relaying the significance of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage area.

For further information on visiting Blue Mountains National Parks, contact the NPWS Heritage Centre at Blackheath, phone 02 4787 8877.

Open seven days 9.00 am to 4.30 pm.

The Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area (GBMWHA) is comprised of the total area of the reserves listed below as they existed at the time of nomination.

Since the nomination and subsequent listing of the GBMWHA, most of these reserves have increased in area as a result of the purchase of areas of adjoining freehold land and the addition of other areas of public land. The additional 37,694 hectares are not part of the GBMWHA. The addition of these areas to the GBMWHA will require additional assessment and a decision by both NSW and Australian Governments.

Blue Mountains National Park, 247,840 ha - established in 1959, Blue Mountains National Park extends from Glenbrook west to Mount Victoria and from Mount Wilson south to Wombeyan Caves. A heritage area rich in history, wildlife and world-famous scenery, the Park is home to the Blue Gum Forest, Govetts Leap and the Three Sisters, and attracts 3 million visitors each year. Blue Mountains National Park also includes the Grose Wilderness.

Thirlmere Lakes National Park, 641ha - established in 1972, protects a series of five connected freshwater lakes on sandstone country near Picton. Lake Gandangarra, Lake Werri Berri, Lake Couridjah, Lake Baraba and Lake Nerrigorang are all Aboriginal names.

Kanangra-Boyd National Park, 65,379ha - gazetted in 1969, 110 km west of Sydney, it is made up of two land units: Boyd’s Plateau and the surrounding rugged terrain. It is associated with the early bushwalking movement, and Myles Dunphy - widely regarded as the Father of Australian conservation - and his son Milo. The majority of the Park was declared Wilderness in 1997.

Nattai National Park, 47,855ha - Nattai NP forms the core of the Nattai Reserves System, which includes Bargo, Burragorang, Nattai and Yerranderie State Recreation Areas. Approximately 30.000ha of the reserve system was declared Wilderness in 1991, the first area declared under the Wilderness Act 1987. The area is a major catchment area for Lake Burragorang and Warragamba Dam, Sydney’s primary water supply.

Wollemi National Park, 499,879ha - north west of Sydney, is the second largest Park in NSW. The centre of the Park features the Wollemi Wilderness area, declared the largest wilderness in NSW in 1999. The landscape ranges from exposed rocky tops to deep protected valleys. Home to the Wollemi Pine and rare and endangered animals, including the broad headed snake and regent honeyeater.

Gardens of Stone National Park, 15,150ha - 30km north of Lithgow, was gazetted in 1994. The Park terrain varies from limestone outcrops to sandstone escarpments. The ‘pagoda’ rock formations occur near sandstone escarpment edges where erosion has sculpted ‘beehive’ domes and other shapes. Near Capertee in the north of the Park, creeks have created steep sided gullies to expose 400 million year old limestone outcrops.

Yengo National Park, 153,483ha - stretching 70km from Wisemans Ferry to the Hunter Valley, Yengo NP conserves a rugged sandstone landscape featuring Aboriginal sites and a unique mix of plant and animal communities. Yengo is home to the endangered brush-tailed rock wallaby, new Holland mouse, turquoise parrot and tiger quoll - one of the only places in NSW where north coast, central coast, highland and western species are found living close together. Home to the Old Great North Road, a traditional travelling route first shown to surveyors by Aboriginals.

Jenolan Caves Karst Conservation Reserve, 2,422ha - located 180km west of Sydney. It contains the best known and arguably the most spectacular underground limestone caves in Australia and is highly valued for its natural and cultural significance. It is also of historical significance and is one of Australia’s best tourist attractions.

LOOKOUTS WITH COACH ACCESS AND FACILITIES There are countless lookouts in the region all offering amazing yet different perspectives over the surrounding World Heritage National Parks. The following lookouts offer easy access for coaches, visitor facilities and in most cases some interpretation of the site.

Wentworth Falls and Wentworth Falls Picnic Area (National Park)

At the end of Falls Road and off Sir Henry Burrell Drive this picnic area is one of the earliest developed tourist facilities in the Mountains. The exotic trees and free stone walls have been added to since the 1870’s. The area provides access to many spectacular lookouts and bushwalks providing dramatic views of cliff top escarpments, waterfalls and endless blue vistas of the Jamison Valley and Mt Solitary.

Walkers should be prepared, with map.

Parking: Limited designated coach parking.

Sublime Point, Leura - (Best suited to Mini buses)

Situated at the end of Sublime Point Road a short walk brings you to a lookout offering superb views of the Jamison Valley and a different perspective of the famous Three Sisters. Less well known than the lookout at Echo Point the view is equally as good and the access a little more adventurous.

The walk to the lookout is graded as easy and takes about a ½ hr and is ½km return. However some do find it a little steep on the return.

Parking: Insufficient turning area for large coaches when car park is full.

Gordon Falls Lookout and Reserve, Leura

Off Lone Pine Avenue, Leura from Gordon Falls Picnic area it is a short walk to the cliff edge and the lookout provides views over Jamison Valley and Gordon Falls.

Parking: Roadside car parking. No designated coach parking.

Katoomba Falls, Katoomba

A series of small waterfalls flowing over rocks to the Katoomba Falls where it drops 55m over the escarpment into the Jamison Valley. An Aboriginal word meaning ‘shiny, tumbling waters’ Katoomba Falls can be seen from a number of vantage points on Reids Plateau, the Round Walk and the Scenic Skyway at Scenic World.

The Falls are floodlit from sunset to 10.00pm.

Parking: Limited roadside parking or limited off road parking in Katoomba Falls Reserve opposite.

Echo Point, Echo Point Road, Katoomba

Perched on the edge of the escarpment the Echo Point precinct provides panoramic views of the southern Blue Mountains, Kanangra-Boyd Wilderness and the Three Sisters rock formation. In the precinct there are many lookouts and walks including a path to the Three Sisters Walk and the Giant Stairway.

The Three Sisters are floodlit from sunset to 11.00pm. Nearby Lilianfels Park has picnic tables and a monument to the early road builders.

Parking: Designated spaces in Echo Point Road and Panorama Avenue.

Govetts Leap, Blackheath (National Park)

This popular lookout is the start (or end) to a number of bushwalks and offers spectacular views over the Grose Valley and to Govetts Leap Falls. There is access to the Fairfax Heritage Track which is suitable for wheelchairs and prams. Also seen from the lookout is Govetts Leap waterfall on Govetts Leap brook where the falls plummet about 180 metres onto the broken rocks at the base of the cliff. Formerly known as Bridal Veil Falls this is the tallest single drop waterfall in the Mountains.

Parking: Limited coach parking available.

Pulpit Rock Lookout, Blackheath (National Park)

400m from the carpark the view from the lookout is unsurpassed. Three levels of lookouts provide different aspects of the 240 degree view into Govetts Gorge and the Grose Valley. Information boards will describe the rare vegetation and landforms

that surround you. Three kms unsealed road. Steep access to lookouts.

Parking: Limited parking, Small Mini buses only. Unsealed car park.

Anvil Rock, Blackheath (National Park)

Located at the end of Hat Hill Road this weathered sandstone rock formation offers magnificent views over the Grose Valley to Mt Banks and Mt Hay. Wind Eroded Cave is just 400m to the west. Unsealed road access for 5kms.

Parking: Limited parking. Small Mini buses only. Unsealed car park.

Mount York Historic Site, Mount York

At the end of Mount York Road (1061m) this was the start of the steep descent of Cox’s Road to Hartley Vale. An obelisk and monument to explorers Blaxland, Lawson and Wentworth and road builder William Cox can be found at the site along with a ‘Footsteps in Time’ marker to commemorate the survey of the road across the mountains by George Evans. The area is also a popular site for abseiling. Along Mount York Road is Bardens Lookout and access to historic walking tracks Berghoffers Pass, Lawson’s Long Alley, and Lockyers Road.

Parking: No designated coach parking.

Hassans Walls, Lithgow

Hassans Walls Lookout is the highest lookout in the Blue Mountains at approximately 1100 metres above sea level. Look over to Mt Wilson, Mt York, Mt Tarana and Mt Blaxland and the whole Hartley Valley below. To the south are the Kanimbla and Megalong Valleys and Mt Bindo (1363 metres). Unsealed road. Access off Browns Gap Road.

Parking: Limited for Mini buses only.

Scenic Hill Lookout, Lithgow

Five minutes east of Lithgow is the Prisoner of War Memorial and a monument to the doctors and nurses who tendered to the ex-POWs. On the way to the Zig Zag Railway it has easy access and views back over Lithgow.

Parking: Car park.

LOCATION OF PARKS & PUBLIC TOILETS

The distinctive blue haze which has earned the Blue Mountains its name, is quite different and of a deeper hue than that found in any other part of the world. Known as ‘Rayleigh Scattering’ after Lord Rayleigh, who first investigated the phenomenon, it is caused by scattered rays of light coming into contact with fine particles and droplets of oil dispersed from the eucalyptus trees in the valleys.

You hardly notice it but travelling through the Blue Mountains the road is gradually rising – from an elevation of 163m above sea level at Glenbrook to 1065m above sea level at Blackheath. Highest point in the Blue Mountains is Mt Piddington at 1094m.

The Blue Mountains Region is home to the

ancient Wollemi Pine, a living fossil, that was discovered in 1994 in a small population hidden in the wilderness area of the Wollemi National Park. The Wollemi Pine is bisexual with both female and male reproductive cones on the same tree.

The Jamison Valley, seen from Echo Point at Katoomba, is older than the Grand Canyon in the USA.

The Blue Mountains is the only ‘proclaimed city’ in the world that is inside a World Heritage area.

The dwarf mountain pine can only be found in the spray zones on south facing waterfalls above 700metres. This threatened species is only found in the Blue Mountains in a handful of locations.

In the Blue Mountains Region the

Superb Lyrebird, using its powerful claws, will move over 60 tonnes of soil every year in search of invertebrates. They also love to mimmick sounds they hear around them so listen carefully when in the bush.

At Mount Boyce Lookout, 1090m above sea level the RTA have erected an information board on the history of the crossings of the Mountains and the many engineering marvels it took to achieve the crossing. 2013 is the Bicentenary of the European crossing of the Mountains.

Katoomba and surrounds is immensely proud of its Cittaslow status — one of only two regions in the Southern hemisphere recognised as such by the Italian originated Slow Food movement.

The fossilised jawbone of a Diprotodon (giant wombat), that lived at least 20,000 years ago, was found in the Blue Mountains Region in 2007 at Jenolan Caves.

Thousands of years ago a Tasmanian Devil crept into the Imperial Cave at Jenolan. Losing its way in the darkness it died, as did many other animals there. It was discovered in the 1970’s. Today its jawbone is on display close to where it was found at Jenolan Caves.

The village of Oberon, proclaimed in 1863, takes the name from the King of the Fairies in Shakespeare’s Midsummer Nights Dream.

Bells Line of Road took its name from Archibald Bell Junior, the explorer who at the age of just nineteen years crossed what was to become one of the most scenic routes across the Blue Mountains.

Australia’s sixth Prime Minister, Joseph Cook came from Lithgow.

Lithgow was the birthplace of the iron and steel industry in Australia.

In 1836 Charles Darwin observed the platypus at Wallerawang near Lithgow where Lake Wallace is today. A memorial, crafted by local artisans, has been erected to commemorate Darwin’s visit to Lake Wallace.
