THE CHINA RENAISSANCEThe Rise of Xi Jinping and the 18th Communist Party Congressby the writers, artists and editors of the South China Morning Post & edited by Jonathan Sharp

Rising superpower China duly anointed a new generation of leaders led by Xi Jinping at the

Communist Party's 18th National Congress held in November 2012. While the conclave itself

passed off with smoothly choreographed efficiency, the months leading up to this once-a-

decade transition were anything but orderly. Intense factional wrangling behind the scenes was

accompanied by scandals very much in public view. In the most spectacular furore the political

aspirations of Communist aristocrat Bo Xilai were dashed, at one time threatening to derail the

meticulous stage managing of the congress itself.

At the start of what turned out to be a tumultuous year, the South China Morning Post set out on

an ambitious project to chronicle the transfer of power to the so-called fifth generation of Chinese

leaders, delving behind the cloak of secrecy that routinely masks Beijing's corridors of power. The

result was unparalleled coverage and a series of exclusives that kept the newspaper well ahead of

its peers on this remarkable story.

While the past decade saw China's supercharged economy accelerate past Japan to become the

world's second-largest, the coming decade is expected to see China led by Xi and his team move

towards catching up the United States as the world's top economic force. Who are the people that

will guide China through its challenges at home and on the global stage? By profiling dozens of

rising stars as well as current movers and shakers, the SCMP has provided the most complete

portrait to date of the leaders who will control the world's most populous country over the next

decade. This book aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive insight into the men, and the

tiny handful of women, who are going to be charting that course.

Readership: All who are interested in China affairs.

MANAGING INDONESIA’S TRANSFORMATIONAn Oral Historyby Ginandjar Kartasasmita

“Ginandjar Kartasasmita was instrumental in Indonesia’s democratic transition and played key roles

both in the government and in the Parliament from President Suharto’s time to the current Yudhoyono

administration. I firmly believe his memoir is essential reading for anyone interested in understanding

the past, present, and future of Indonesia.”

Yasuo Fukuda former Prime Minister of Japan

“Indonesia’s relatively smooth evolution into a democracy is short of a miracle. As the largest founding

member state of ASEAN, Indonesia’s experiences in nation-building have implications on our regional

organisation. Professor Ginandjar Kartasasmita has been a close witness to the transformation of

his country and has been directly involved in the nation’s journey to modernity. This book is a gold

mine of information for all who are interested in the political and economic evolution of the world’s

largest Muslim country. It is a must-read for those who want to understand contemporary Indonesia.”

Surin Pitsuwan Secretary-General

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)

“Indonesia’s path to the stable and dynamic state as it is today was a long arduous route which

marked periods of progress often followed by economic collapse. Ginandjar Kartasasmita was a

witness to many of these events and this oral history provides a fascinating firsthand account of

Indonesia’s development from a flawed state to a growing functioning economy and a government

grounded on democratic principles.”

Joseph J Stern Harvard University (Retired)

“This personal account of Indonesia spanning four decades by a true insider gives us unique insights

in the turbulent and progressive times of building a new nation. Kartasasmita’s intimate storytelling,

with a sharp eye for detail and self-reflection, makes it a captivating read. Highly recommended for

anyone with a keen interest in this complex region of the world.”

Elisabeth Scheper Senior Gender & Peacebuilding Advisor

United Nations Department of Political Affairs

Managing Indonesia’s Transformation: An Oral History is an account of Ginandjar Kartasasmita’s career in the Indonesian government, both under President Suharto and in the post-Suharto era. Based on all the ministerial positions in which Kartasasmita has served the government, the book provides readers candid insights into the domestic and international political and economic contexts in which decisions were made, and how policies were formulated and implemented in Indonesia.

The book contains many hours of interviews in which the author responds — as frankly as he can — to all sorts of questions from a group of scholars and specialists working on Indonesian politics and political economy, with the understanding that the book is for those who want to understand Indonesian politics, both past and present.

positions in different capacities. Before serving as a presidential advisor to Susilo Bambang

Yudhoyono — the country’s 6th President — since 2009, Kartasasmita chaired the House of

Regional Representatives, or Indonesia’s ‘Upper House’, which was newly established in 2004

aiming to strengthen the authority of legislative branch in the age of democracy.

THE WORLD TURNED UPSIDE DOWNThe Complex Partnership between China and Latin Americaby Alfredo Toro Hardy (Venezuelan Ambassador, Singapore)

“About 12% of the world’s population lives in the West and 88% live outside. Yet, the strong, diverse

voices of the 88% are rarely heard. Alfredo Toro Hardy provides one such voice that needs to be heard,

especially in the area of China’s new relationships with Latin America. Given the new global trends of

our time, this volume could not be more timely. It deserves careful study.”

Kishore Mahbubani

Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore

One of “the top 100 public intellectuals of the world” by Foreign Policy

Author of “The Great Convergence: Asia, the West, and the Logic of One World”

“This is the first book written by an eminent Latin-American figure on the relation between his region

and the Asia-Pacific region with particular reference to China. As such this book fills a bibliographical

vacuum. On the other hand, the author’s ample experience on international affairs and his scholarship

are reflected in a text full of invaluable information but at the same time clear and accurate. Once

more Toro Hardy makes a fundamental contribution to the better understanding of Latin American

realities.”

Jorge Alberto Lozoya

Mexican Ambassador

Former Secretary General of the Iberian–American Cooperation Secretariat

Former Chief of Advisers on Foreign Policy to the President of Mexico

Acting as a Sorcerer’s Apprentice, the West incorporated 1.3 billion Chinese and 1.2 billion Indians

into the world’s labour equation within a context of lower production costs. This resulted in erosion

of its competitive capacity and social stability, while greatly benefiting developing economies,

many of which were able to emerge with unprecedented speed. With China as the main engine,

the developing economies have become increasingly integrated, sustaining in the process a

fundamental part of the global trade growth. While this phenomenon took shape, excesses within

Western economies generated a seismic crisis that dramatically accelerated a slow decline. As the

ascendant and descendant curves of developing and developed economies are crossing each other,

a decoupling tendency between both has become evident. The economic partnership between China

and Latin America epitomizes well the growing integration between emerging economies. Even if

mostly benefiting from it, Latin America is under the double sign of threat and opportunity due to

this complex relation. For Latin America to succeed, it will need to reinvent itself.

The analyses and information contained in this book will be of interest to researchers, academics

and policy-makers alike.

ent CASE STUDIES IN ASIAN MANAGEMENT

edited by Parissa Haghirian (Sophia University, Japan)

There is a lack of knowledge on how corporations in Asia develop strategies, organize their work

processes and deal with competition. Western managers and business students need to know

more about Asian corporations and their management styles. Learning about Asia, however, has

always been a challenging task. The main challenge is the complexity encountered when dealing

with Asian management issues, which differ not only for different countries, but also for different

types of businesses, not to mention national management preferences and styles.

This book tries to fill this gap, by presenting case studies of various Asian countries including

China, Japan, India, Korea and The Philippines. The case studies are as diverse as management

activities in Asia can be and include a variety of different companies in several Asian countries.

This book attempts to present an overview on the variety and complexity of management and

business processes in Asian countries. It intends to support business people and students of

international management to get a deeper understanding of Asian management practices by

presenting practical examples of Asian firms and their strategies.

UNFINISHED REFORMS IN THE CHINESE ECONOMYedited by Jun Zhang (Fudan University, China)

China has quickly moved into a critical point in the sense that its past performance in economic

growth and development has created so many unsolved problems, and for such problems to be

addressed, a better understanding of these problems and a clear policy framework are required

for policy makers to conduct reforms. Based on high–level empirical research on China’s economic

development by each of the contributors, this edited book provides an in-depth and clear analysis

of many of important issues facing China’s move to new phase of economic development and

transformation, and discusses policy issues involved in further reforms.

CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IN CHINAA Vision, An Assessment and a Blueprintby Benoit Vermander (Fudan University, China)

Over the years, many corporations have been trying to determine what they can and should do to contribute to the sustainability of the economic, social and ecological environment within which they operate. Corporate social responsibility has become a key senior management issue worldwide and an increasingly debated topic in China. This book aims at helping companies operating in China to better assess and exercise their corporate social responsibility (CSR) in specific contexts. The purpose of this book is to show that CSR has a strong economic pay back in the long run, that it is a key success factor in nurturing corporate excellence, and that a sense of urgency and accrued inventiveness are required from companies operating in China.

This practical, business-oriented book takes into account China’s classical and contemporary thought on CSR. It is the result of a long research and collaborative process, with several institutions (notably the Chinese’s People Institute of Foreign Affairs, Fudan University, the Taipei Ricci Institute, BNP Paribas and the Chirac Foundation) during 2005–2010 and later with some industry leaders.

Cross-disciplinary in scope, the book aims at helping students and analysts in political science, governance, international relations and Chinese studies to understand and appreciate the unique role that firms play in shaping a new China. It focuses on the relationship between the state, civil society and corporations in the Chinese context. It researches the conditions under which this relationship might result in redefining China’s developmental model.

CORPORATE STRATEGY FOR DRAMATIC PRODUCTIVITY SURGEedited by Akira Ishikawa (Aoyama Gakuin University, Japan) & Tetsuro Saisho (Gunma University, Japan)

Corporate Strategy for Dramatic Productivity Surge deals with the very basics of productivity and cost performance — including abridgement of time, increase in speed, enhancement of capabilities, increase in sensitivity and precision, enhancement of efficiency and effectiveness, alteration of size, reduction of costs and increase in revenue, among others.

INNOVATION AND GROWTHWhat Do We Know?edited by Anjan Thakor (Washington University in St. Louis, USA)

This book, written entirely by faculty at the Olin Business School, Washington University in St. Louis, provides a variety of practical and implementable perspectives on innovation for managers. In addition, the book contains chapters that provide reviews of the academic research on innovation in the faculty members’ specific areas of expertise. In taking this multifunctional approach to innovation, the focus of the book is not just on what is currently considered to be “best practice”. Rather, it is on bringing to managers the cutting-edge knowledge that is being generated by academic research that goes beyond current best practice.

US companies that wish to establish strategic alliances based in China or other Asian countries,

WINNING WITH RISK MANAGEMENTby Russell Walker (Northwestern University, USA)

This book develops the notion that companies can succeed on the basis of risk management,

much as companies compete on efficiency, costs, labor, location, and other dimensions. The

reality of risk and how it impacts companies is that it is much more definite, often catastrophic

and looks more like a shock. This is striking, as a difference between firms on risk different than

a marginal difference in operating efficiencies, for example. Competing on Risk Management

requires a discipline, a commitment to using information and recognizing shocks and then acting

upon those to redistribute assets. This book will examine how leading firms that compete on risk

have done this and showcase best practices and impacts to the capital structure of firms and their

organizational formation.

Key Features:• Key examples of how riskmanagement best practices return long-term shareholder and

enterprisevalue• Bestpracticesfordealingwithoperationalandregulatoryrisks• Bestpracticesfortheconsiderationofriskmetricsforindustry-widecomparison

Readership: Students and researchers who are interested in the topic of risk management.

About the AuthorRussell Walker, PhD is the Associate Director of the Zell Center for Risk Research at Kellogg. His

expertise is in the application of analytics in business and risk management.

He is a regularly invited speaker internationally, including at the IESE Business School, in Spain,

the Sasin Graduate Institute of Business Administration of Chulalongkorn University, in Thailand,

and the Indian School of Business, in India.

(Revised Edition)by E Brian Smith (Formerly Master of St Catherine’s College, Oxford, UK & Vice-Chancellor of Cardiff University, UK)

This elegant book provides a student-friendly introduction to the subject of physical chemistry. It is

by the author of the very successful Basic Chemical Thermodynamics and is written in the same

well-received popular style. It is concise and more compact than standard textbooks on the subject

and emphasises the two important topics underpinning the subject: quantum mechanics and the

second law of thermodynamics. Both topics are challenging to students because they focus on

uncertainty and probability. The book explains these fundamental concepts clearly and shows how

they offer the key to understanding a wide range of chemical phenomena including atomic and

molecular spectra, the structure and properties of solids, liquids and gases, chemical equilibrium

and the rates of chemical reactions.

This revised edition has enabled improvements and corrections to be made.

THERMODYNAMICSby Patrick Jacobs (University of Western Ontario, Canada)

This textbook on thermodynamics is intended primarily for honours and B. Sc students majoring in

physical chemistry. However, students of physics, engineering and biochemistry will also find the

book relevant to their studies.

Its principal features are a much shorter presentation of the laws of thermodynamics than is

customary, made possible by the definition of the thermodynamic scale of temperature using only

one fixed point (the triple point of water) which immediately follows the Zeroth Law. The author's

first exposure to thermodynamics revealed that its usefulness seemed to be mostly confined to the

study of gases in equilibrium. Readers of this book will find that applications of thermodynamics

to liquids and solids as well as gases are emphasized, and they will learn that thermodynamics

can be applied to systems which are not in equilibrium.

This book contains three learning aids. Fully worked out examples are included at appropriate

places in the text, which also includes numerous exercises. These are designed to help the reader

stop and think about what he or she has just read. Answers to the exercises are given at the end

of each section and there are also problems at the end of each chapter which readers can work

out on their own.

COMPUTER VISION IN MEDICAL IMAGINGedited by C H Chen (University of Massachusetts, USA)

The major progress in computer vision allows us to make extensive use of medical imaging data

to provide us better diagnosis, treatment and predication of diseases. Computer vision can exploit

texture, shape, contour and prior knowledge along with contextual information from image sequence

and provide 3D and 4D information that helps with better human understanding. Many powerful

tools have been available through image segmentation, machine learning, pattern classification,

tracking, reconstruction to bring much needed quantitative information not easily available by

trained human specialists.

The aim of the book is for both medical imaging professionals to acquire and interpret the data,

and computer vision professionals to provide enhanced medical information by using computer

vision techniques. The final objective is to benefit the patients without adding to the already high

medical costs.

NON-AXIOMATIC LOGICA Model of Intelligent Reasoningby Pei Wang (Temple University, USA)

This book provides a systematic and comprehensive description of Non-Axiomatic Logic, which is

the result of the author’s research for about three decades.

Non-Axiomatic Logic is designed to provide a uniform logical foundation for Artificial Intelligence, as

well as an abstract description of the “laws of thought” followed by the human mind. Different from

“mathematical” logic, where the focus is the regularity required when demonstrating mathematical

conclusions, Non-Axiomatic Logic is an attempt to return to the original aim of logic, that is, to

formulate the regularity in actual human thinking. To achieve this goal, the logic is designed under

the assumption that the system has insufficient knowledge and resources with respect to the

problems to be solved, so that the “logical conclusions” are only valid with respect to the available

knowledge and resources. Reasoning processes according to this logic covers cognitive functions

like learning, planning, decision making, problem solving, etc.

This book is written for researchers and students in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science,

and can be used as a textbook for courses at graduate level, or upper-level undergraduate, on

Non-Axiomatic Logic.

EURO BONDSMarkets, Infrastructure and Trendsby Marida Bertocchi (University of Bergamo, Italy), Giorgio Consigli (University of Bergamo, Italy), Rita D'Ecclesia (University of Sapienza, Rome, Italy), Rosella Giacometti (University of Bergamo, Italy), Vittorio Moriggia (University of Bergamo, Italy) & Sergio Ortobelli (University of Bergamo, Italy)

“Euro Bonds: Markets, Infrastructure and Trends provides an outstanding and up-to-date guide to

the Euro bonds markets. Detailed and well-documented, it presents a broad range of well-chosen

topics in a precise and yet accessible style. It is an excellent choice for anyone seeking insight into

the bond markets across the Eurozone and a valuable contribution to the study of these important

markets.”

Nico van der Wijst, Professor of Finance

Norwegian University of Science and Technology

“Euro bonds mean different things to different people. The authors provide a well-researched and

well-written comprehensive view of a vast and fast growing area of investment products, financial

markets and debt financing instruments. Their narrative comes complete with a wealth of nicely-

presented data. The book is a must-read for those studying European markets and the economy

and an invaluable reference for those immersed in it, be they policymakers, investors or academic

researchers. A big question mark hangs over the future of this book: Will it become the standard

reference it deservers? Or will it be consigned soon to a footnote on the history of the Eurozone?

The answer is in the hands of Eurozone leaders. Will they decisively address the structural problems

of the common currency or will they continue with piecemeal solutions to every new crisis? For the

sake of the authors — and of the people of Europe, of course — I hope for the former. The book

itself offers some valuable guidance.” Stavros A Zenios

INTRODUCTORY COURSE ON FINANCIAL MATHEMATICSby M V Tretyakov (University of Nottingham, UK)

This book is an elementary introduction to the basic concepts of financial mathematics with a

central focus on discrete models and an aim to demonstrate simple, but widely used, financial

derivatives for managing market risks. Only a basic knowledge of probability, real analysis, ordinary

differential equations, linear algebra and some common sense are required to understand the

concepts considered in this book.

Financial mathematics is an application of advanced mathematical and statistical methods to

financial management and markets, with a main objective of quantifying and hedging risks. Since

the book aims to present the basics of financial mathematics to the reader, only essential elements

of probability and stochastic analysis are given to explain ideas concerning derivative pricing

and hedging. To keep the reader intrigued and motivated, the book has a ‘sandwich’ structure:

probability and stochastics are given in situ where mathematics can be readily illustrated by

application to finance.

MODELING AND PRICING OF SWAPS FOR FINANCIAL AND ENERGY MARKETS WITH STOCHASTIC VOLATILITIESby Anatoliy Swishchuk (University of Calgary, Canada)

Modeling and Pricing of Swaps for Financial and Energy Markets with Stochastic Volatilities is

devoted to the modeling and pricing of various kinds of swaps, such as those for variance, volatility,

covariance, correlation, for financial and energy markets with different stochastic volatilities, which

include CIR process, regime-switching, delayed, mean-reverting, multi-factor, fractional, Levy-based,

semi-Markov and COGARCH(1,1). One of the main methods used in this book is change of time

method. The book outlines how the change of time method works for different kinds of models and

problems arising in financial and energy markets and the associated problems in modeling and

pricing of a variety of swaps. The book also contains a study of a new model, the delayed Heston

model, which improves the volatility surface fitting as compared with the classical Heston model.

The author calculates variance and volatility swaps for this model and provides hedging techniques.

The book considers content on the pricing of variance and volatility swaps and option pricing

formula for mean-reverting models in energy markets. Some topics such as forward and futures

in energy markets priced by multi-factor Levy models and generalization of Black-76 formula with

Markov-modulated volatility are part of the book as well, and it includes many numerical examples

such as S&P60 Canada Index, S&P500 Index and AECO Natural Gas Index.

COMPUTER AIDED ENGINEERING DESIGN WITH SOLIDWORKSby Godfrey Onwubolu (Humber College of Technology & Advanced Learning, Canada)

Computer Aided Engineering Design with SolidWorks is designed both for students taking SolidWorks courses at college and university and also for engineering designers involved or interested in using SolidWorks for real-life applications in manufacturing processes, mechanical systems and engineering analysis. The course material is divided into two parts. Part I covers the principles of SolidWorks, simple and advanced part modeling approaches, assembly modeling, drawing, configurations/design tables and surface modeling. Part II covers the applications of SolidWorks in manufacturing processes, mechanical systems and engineering analysis. The manufacturing processes applications include mold design, sheet metal parts design, die design, and weldments. The mechanical systems applications include routing: piping and tubing, gears, pulleys, and chains, cams and springs, mechanism design and analysis, threads and fastners, hinges and universal joints. The engineering analysis application includes finite element analysis.

This text book is unique because it is one of the very few to thoroughly cover the applications of SolidWorks in manufacturing processes, mechanical systems and engineering analysis as presented in Part I.

It is written using a hands-on approach in which students can follow the steps described in each chapter to model and assemble parts, produce drawings and be involved in the applications on their own with little assistance from their instructors during each teaching session or in the computer laboratory. There are several pictorial descriptions of the steps involved in every stage of part modeling, assembly modeling, drawing details, and applications presented in this text book.

FINITE ELEMENT METHODS FOR ENGINEERS(2nd Edition)by Roger T Fenner (Imperial College London, UK)

This book is intended as a textbook providing a deliberately simple introduction to finite element

methods in a way that should be readily understandable to engineers, both students and practising

professionals. Only the very simplest elements are considered, mainly two dimensional three-noded

“constant strain triangles”, with simple linear variation of the relevant variables. Chapters of the

book deal with structural problems (beams), classification of a broad range of engineering into

harmonic and biharmonic types, finite element analysis of harmonic problems, and finite element

analysis of biharmonic problems (plane stress and plane strain). Full FORTRAN programs are

listed and explained in detail, and a range of practical problems solved in the text. Despite being

somewhat unfashionable for general programming purposes, the FORTRAN language remains

very widely used in engineering. The programs listed, which were originally developed for use on

mainframe computers, have been thoroughly updated for use on desktops and laptops. Unlike the

first edition, the new edition has problems (with solutions) at the end of each chapter.

Electronic copies of all the computer programs displayed in the book can be downloaded at: http://

PRINCIPLES OF ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORKS(3rd Edition)by Daniel Graupe (University of Illinois, Chicago, USA)

Artificial neural networks are most suitable for solving problems that are complex, ill-defined,

highly nonlinear, of many and different variables, and/or stochastic. Such problems are abundant

in medicine, in finance, in security and beyond.

This volume covers the basic theory and architecture of the major artificial neural networks.

Uniquely, it presents 18 complete case studies of applications of neural networks in various fields,

ranging from cell-shape classification to micro-trading in finance and to constellation recognition

— all with their respective source codes. These case studies demonstrate to the readers in detail

how such case studies are designed and executed and how their specific results are obtained.

The book is written for a one-semester graduate or senior-level undergraduate course on artificial

neural networks. It is also intended to be a self-study and a reference text for scientists, engineers

and for researchers in medicine, finance and data mining.

Readership: Graduate and advanced senior students in artificial intelligence, pattern recognition

& image analysis, neural networks, computational economics and finance, and biomedical

engineering.

THE EARTH AS A CRADLE FOR LIFEThe Origin, Evolution and Future of the Environmentby Frank D Stacey (CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering, Australia) & Jane H Hodgkinson (CSIRO Earth Science and Resource Engineering, Australia)

The Earth as a Cradle for Life aims to fill the gap between readers who have a strong and informed scientific interest in the environment (but no access to the journal literature), and their desire for a basic understanding of the environment. It provides a comprehensive account, and requires no advanced mathematical skills. It will also satisfy a need for a textbook on fundamental science for students in tertiary environmental science courses that may otherwise neglect the underlying basis of their subject.

This book draws on several decades of research by the authors on fundamental Earth science, and presents probing insights on environmental questions that are not widely recognized — even in the professional community. For this reason it will become a landmark in the environmental science and Earth science literature.

ENERGY IN THE 21ST CENTURY(3rd Edition)by John R Fanchi (Texas Christian University, USA)

Many events that affect global energy production and consumption have occurred since the second edition of Energy in the 21st Century appeared in 2011. For example, an earthquake and tsunami in Japan led to the disruption of the Fukushima nuclear facility and a global re-examination of the safety of the nuclear industry. Oil and natural gas prices continue to be volatile, and the demand for energy has been affected by the global economy. The third edition updates data and the discussion of recent events.

Energy in the 21st Century has been used as the text for an introductory energy course for the general college student population. Based on student feedback, we have included several features that enhance the value of the third edition as a textbook. In particular, we have included learning objectives at the beginning of each chapter, end of chapter activities, a comprehensive index, and a glossary. Points to Ponder are abbreviated as P2P in the Learning Objectives boxes and are provided throughout the text. They are designed to encourage the reader to consider the material from different perspectives.

BERGEN-BELSEN 1945A Medical Student’s Journalby Michael John Hargrave introduction by David Bowen Hargrave

Between 1941 and 1945 as many as 70,000 inmates died at the Bergen-Belsen concentration

camp in northwestern Germany. The exact number will never be known. A large number of these

deaths were caused by malnutrition and disease, mainly typhus, shortly before and after liberation.

It was at this time, in April of 1945, that Michael Hargrave answered a notice at the Westminster

Hospital Medical School for ‘volunteers’. On the day of his departure the 21-year-old learned that

he was being sent to Bergen-Belsen, liberated only two weeks before.

This firsthand account, a diary written for his mother, details Michael’s month-long experience at

the camp. He compassionately relates the horrendous living conditions suffered by the prisoners,

describing the sickness and disease he encountered and his desperate, often fruitless, struggle

to save as many lives as possible. Amidst immeasurable horrors, his descriptions of the banalities

of everyday life and diagrams of the camp’s layout take on a new poignancy, while anatomic line

drawings detail the medical conditions and his efforts to treat them. Original newspaper cuttings

and photographs of the camp, many previously unpublished, add a further layer of texture to the

endeavors of an inexperienced medical student faced with extreme human suffering.

DEVELOPING LIFE SKILLS THROUGH MATH AND SCIENCE GAMESby Wee Khee Seah (NASCANS Pte Ltd, Singapore), Li Yang Ng, Ying Zhen Ang, Reico Ng & edited by Beng Lee Lim

“The authors provide a systematic and uncomplicated collection of activities incorporating character

building and the development of leadership skills using Math and Science concepts. The book is

compact without being dense, and takes the reader through a guided tour of the soft skills domain. It

is an interesting and informative excursion. Given the importance of the subject matter of this book

to learn more about academic topics as well as life skills through some leading questions, through

these activities (games), the authors hope that the players have fun while picking up new concepts

in academic knowledge and soft skills, and given the orderly and stimulating manner in which the

subject has been presented, it can be predicted that the book would see several reprints in the years

to come. I recommend this book to people who could use any of the principles and concepts to teach

the Math and Science curriculum and to reinforce the soft skills both in the classroom and outside

of it. It is also a great book to people who have fun in teaching while picking up new concepts in

academic knowledge and soft skills.”

eral NOBEL PRIZES AND NATURE’S SURPRISES

by Erling Norrby (The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Sweden)

“This book describes and explains one of the most important discoveries of the 20th century. It is a

seminal work, that scholars of the History of Science will use to be able to understand how science

evolves. Young scientists will find this book a valuable resource.”

Sir Aaron Klug

Nobel laureate in Chemistry, 1982

“Speculation about what happens in the selection of Nobel Prize winners is part of both the narrative

and the ‘gossip’ of science. Interpreting what went on in the Nobel selection committees 50 years ago

requires both an intimate understanding of how the process works and familiarity with subtleties of

the Swedish language. Erling Norrby has the proper personal experiences to make such evaluations.

In the present, his second, book he mainly reviews Medical Nobel awards during 1960 and 1962.

Coming as it does near the beginnings of the modern medicine — recognizing exceptional advances

in immunology and molecular biology — this is a fascinating era for those who are intrigued by the

history of discovery.”

Peter C Doherty

Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine, 1996

“The moment the Nobel Foundation announces its Prizes in the sciences, decades of struggle and

turmoil toward discovery enter the spotlight. To skillfully examine some of the most dramatic scientific

advances in the middle of the twentieth century, Erling Norrby has reached deeply into the Nobel

archives to examine firsthand how many of the most illustrious Prizes from that era came to be

awarded. As a superb scientist, educator and administrator, Dr Norrby is able to tell these stories

within the context of the scientific discoveries.”

Stanley B Prusiner

Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine, 1997

Each year the Nobel Prizes in the natural sciences reveal amazing discoveries. New milestones in

the relentless advance of science are identified. The growth of knowledge and its evolution can be

researched in the Nobel archives where nominations are kept secret for 50 years after the awards

have been made. They represent a treasure for real-time assessment of science. Norrby's earlier

book, Nobel Prizes and Life Sciences (2010) examined the unique archival records until 1959.

The present book takes us up to 1962, surveying a range of dazzling discoveries. All prizes

in immunology are reviewed. Their impact on our capacity to control infectious diseases and

transplant organs are highlighted. The Nobel year 1962 is exceptional in recognizing the most major

advance in biology since Darwin in 1859 presented his theory of evolution. This was the dramatic

discovery of the double-helix structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1953. The era of molecular

biology had begun. Its explosive development continues into the present.

Readership: General.

About the AuthorErling Norrby (http://www.norrby.kva.se/) has an MD from the Karolinska Institute, the School of

Science Sifting is designed primarily as a textbook for students interested in research and as

a general reference book for existing career scientists. The aim of this book is to help budding

scientists broaden their capacities to access and use information from diverse sources to the

benefit of their research careers.

The book describes why the capacity to access and integrate both linear and nonlinear information

has been an important historic feature of pivotal scientific breakthroughs. Yet, it is a process that

our students are rarely, if ever, taught in universities. This book goes beyond simply describing the

features of great scientific breakthroughs. It discusses the basis for accessing and using nonlinear

information in the linear research context. It also provides a series of tools and exercises that

can be used to enhance access to nonlinear information for application to research and other

endeavors.

Topics covered include focal points in scientific breakthroughs, the use of concepts maps in

research, use of different vantage points, information as patterns, fractals for the scientist, memory

storage and access points, and synchronicities. Young researchers need useful tools to help with

a more holistic approach to their research careers. This book provides the useful tools to support

flexibility and creativity across a long-term research career.

MICROFLUIDIC TECHNOLOGIES FORHUMAN HEALTHedited by Utkan Demirci (Harvard Medical School, USA & Brigham and Women's Hospital, USA), Ali Khademhosseini (Harvard Medical School, USA & Brigham and Women's Hospital, USA), Robert Langer (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA) & Jeffrey Blander (Harvard Medical School, USA & Brigham and Women's Hospital, USA)

The field of microfluidics has in the last decade permeated many disciplines, from physics to biology and chemistry, and from bioengineering to medical research. One of the most important applications of lab-on-a-chip devices in medicine and related disciplines is disease diagnostics, which involves steps from biological sample/analyte loading to storage, detection, and analysis. The chapters collected in this book detail recent advances in these processes using microfluidic devices and systems. The reviews of portable devices for diagnostic purposes are likely to evoke interest and raise new research questions in interdisciplinary fields (e.g., efficient MEMS/microfluidic engineering driven by biological and medical applications).

The variety of the selected topics (general relevance of microfluidics in medical and bioengineering research, fabrication, advances in on-chip sample detection and analysis, and specific disease models) ensures that each of them can be viewed in the larger context of microfluidic-mediated diagnostics.

Readership: Engineers, academic researchers and instructors, and industry researchers involved in microfluidic technologies.

JOB STRESSORS AND MENTAL HEALTHA Proactive Clinical Perspectiveby Karen Belkic (Karolinska Institute, Sweden) & Cedo Savic (Karolinska Institute, Sweden)

The title of this book reflects the fundamental aim: to explore the relation between exposure to job stressors and mental health. This is done with the primary intention of developing a new clinical approach, one which takes a proactive stance, emphasizing the need for creating work conditions that are more in harmony with the needs of the human being. Pivotal to this endeavor is to provide an integrative and comprehensive methodology, for assessing work stressors and ameliorating them whenever possible. This methodology, the Occupational Stressor Index, the OSI, was developed by the authors, who have successfully applied the OSI over the years in the context of prevention-oriented clinical practice within neurology and psychiatry, as well as within cardiology, oncology and other medical disciplines. The OSI is grounded in cognitive ergonomics and brain research. The authors, as clinicians, have a special interest in and affinity with their colleagues, their fellow physicians. Consequently, the working conditions and mental health of physicians are strongly emphasized throughout the book. Gender considerations are also woven into the entire book.

This book will be of value to readers at many levels and interests. It is written in such a way that a non-expert can learn a great deal about the topics. Readers at all levels can reflect on their own work situation and how it could be improved within the framework of enhanced mental health. For health professionals, particularly psychiatrists, occupational medicine specialists, clinical psychologists as well as physicians involved in primary care and rehabilitation, this book will represent a sorely-needed paradigm shift which will help them address a main source of their patients’ mental distress. It will be thought-provoking and yet also practical. Part I of the book provides the multi-faceted, scientific justification for this new clinical approach. The authors, as clinicians themselves, speak the clinical language and guide the reader step-by-step as to how this approach can be applied in practice.

s PLENTY OF ROOM FOR BIOLOGY AT THE BOTTOMAn Introduction to Bionanotechnology

(2nd Edition)by Ehud Gazit (Tel Aviv University, Israel) & Anna Mitraki (University of Crete and Institute for Electronic Structure and Laser, Greece)

Review of the First Edition:

“It is a very handy introductory book on the dialogue between biology and nanotechnologies that can

be very useful both to a novice and to a seasoned nanoscientist. The former will be very directly and

profitably introduced to the main principles, achievements, and current trends in both research and

applications of bionanotechnology. The latter can use this book as a receptacle into which his or her

fund of knowledge can be fed and organized within a very schematic and well-articulated framework

— one that can be easily expanded and updated.”

Angewandte Chemie International Edition

This expanded and updated edition of the 2007 version introduces readers from various

backgrounds to the rapidly growing interface between biology and nanotechnology. It intellectually

integrates concepts, applications, and outlooks from these major scientific fields and presents

them to readers from diverse backgrounds in a comprehensive and didactic manner.

Written by two leading nanobiologists actively involved at the forefront of the field both as

researchers and educators, this book takes the reader from the fundamentals of nanobiology to

the most advanced applications.

The book fulfils a unique niche: to address not only students, but also scientists who are eager

(and nowadays obliged) to learn about other state-of-the-art disciplines. The book is written in

such a way as to be accessible to biologists, chemists, and physicists with no background in

nanotechnology (for example biologists who are interested in inorganic nanostructures or physicists

STEM CELLSAn Insider’s Guideby Paul Knoepfler (University of California, Davis, USA)

Stem Cells: An Insider's Guide is an exciting new book that takes readers inside the world of

stem cells guided by international stem cell expert, Dr. Paul Knoepfler. Stem cells are catalyzing

a revolution in medicine. The book also tackles the exciting and hotly debated area of stem cell

treatments that are capturing the public's imagination. In the future they may also transform how

we age and reproduce. However, there are serious risks and ethical challenges, too. The author's

goal with this insider's guide is to give readers the information needed to distinguish between the

ubiquitous hype and legitimate hope found throughout the stem cell world. The book answers the

most common questions that people have about stem cells. Can stem cells help my family with a

serious medical problem such as Alzheimer's, Multiple Sclerosis, or Autism? Are such treatments

safe? Can stem cells make me look younger or even literally stay physically young? These questions

and many more are answered here.

A number of ethical issues related to stem cells that spark debates are discussed, including risky

treatments, cloning and embryonic stem cells. The author breaks new ground in a number of ways

such as by suggesting reforms to the FDA, providing a new theory of aging based on stem cells, and

including a revolutionary Stem Cell Patient Bill of Rights. More generally, the book is your guide to

where the stem cell field will be in the near future as well as a thoughtful perspective on how stem

cell therapies will ultimately change your life and our world.

A FIRST COURSE IN ANALYSISby Donald Yau (The Ohio State University at Newark, USA)

This book is an introductory text on real analysis for undergraduate students. The prerequisite for

this book is a solid background in freshman calculus in one variable. The intended audience of this

book includes undergraduate mathematics majors and students from other disciplines who use real

analysis. Since this book is aimed at students who do not have much prior experience with proofs,

the pace is slower in earlier chapters than in later chapters. There are hundreds of exercises, and

hints for some of them are included.

Readership: Undergraduates and graduate students in analysis.

AN INTRODUCTION TO BIOCERAMICS(2nd Edition)edited by Larry L Hench (University of Florida, USA)

This is the second edition of the classic book An Introduction to Bioceramics which provides a

comprehensive overview of all types of ceramic and glass materials that are used in medicine and

dentistry. The enormous growth of the field of bioceramics is due to the recognition by the medical

and dental community of the importance of bioactive materials to stimulate repair and regeneration

of tissues. This edition includes 21 new chapters that document the science and especially the

clinical applications of the new generation of bioceramics in the field of tissue regeneration and

repair. Important socioeconomic factors influencing the economics and availability of new medical

treatments are covered with updates on regulatory procedures for new biomaterials, methods for

technology transfer and ethical issues.

The book contains 42 chapters that offer the only comprehensive treatment of the science,

technology and clinical applications of all types of bioceramic materials used in medicine and

dentistry. Each chapter is written by leaders in their specialized fields and is a thorough review of

the subject matter, unlike many conference proceedings. All chapters have been edited to reflect

the same writing style, making the book an easy read. The completeness of treatment of all types

of bioceramics and their clinical applications makes the book unique in the field and invaluable

APPLICATIONS OF CONTACT GEOMETRY AND TOPOLOGY IN PHYSICSby Arkady L Kholodenko (Clemson University, USA)

Although contact geometry and topology is briefly discussed in V I Arnol'd's book “Mathematical

Methods of Classical Mechanics ”(Springer-Verlag, 1989, 2nd edition), it still remains a domain

of research in pure mathematics, e.g. see the recent monograph by H Geiges “An Introduction

to Contact Topology” (Cambridge U Press, 2008). Some attempts to use contact geometry in

physics were made in the monograph “Contact Geometry and Nonlinear Differential Equations”

(Cambridge U Press, 2007). Unfortunately, even the excellent style of this monograph is not

sufficient to attract the attention of the physics community to this type of problems. This book is

the first serious attempt to change the existing status quo. In it we demonstrate that, in fact, all

branches of theoretical physics can be rewritten in the language of contact geometry and topology:

from mechanics, thermodynamics and electrodynamics to optics, gauge fields and gravity; from

physics of liquid crystals to quantum mechanics and quantum computers, etc. The book is written

in the style of famous Landau–Lifshitz (L–L) multivolume course in theoretical physics. This means

that its readers are expected to have solid background in theoretical physics (at least at the level

of the L–L course). No prior knowledge of specialized mathematics is required. All needed new

mathematics is given in the context of discussed physical problems. As in the L–L course some

problems/exercises are formulated along the way and, again as in the L–L course, these are always

supplemented by either solutions or by hints (with exact references). Unlike the L–L course, though,

some definitions, theorems, and remarks are also presented. This is done with the purpose of

stimulating the interest of our readers in deeper study of subject matters discussed in the text.

COUNTING(2nd Edition)by Khee Meng Koh (National University of Singapore, Singapore) & Eng Guan Tay (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)

Review of the First Edition

“This book manages to make an area of mathematics traditionally considered difficult by students

more accessible and is bound to captivate their attention with the numerous interesting exercises

and applications it contains.” Mathematics Abstracts

This book in its Second Edition is a useful, attractive introduction to basic counting techniques for

upper secondary to undergraduate students, as well as teachers. Younger students and lay people

who appreciate mathematics, not to mention avid puzzle solvers, will also find the book interesting.

The various problems and applications here are good for building up proficiency in counting. They

are also useful for honing basic skills and techniques in general problem solving. Many of the

problems avoid routine and the diligent reader will often discover more than one way of solving

a particular problem, which is indeed an important awareness in problem solving. The book thus

helps to give students an early start to learning problem-solving heuristics and thinking skills.

New chapters originally from a supplementary book have been added in this edition to substantially

increase the coverage of counting techniques. The new chapters include the Principle of Inclusion

and Exclusion, the Pigeonhole Principle, Recurrence Relations, the Stirling Numbers and the

Catalan Numbers. A number of new problems have also been added to this edition.

This book is the essential companion to Counting (2nd Edition) (World Scientific, 2013), an

introduction to combinatorics for secondary to undergraduate students. The book gives solutions to

the exercises in Counting (2nd Edition). There is often more than one method to solve a particular

problem and the authors have included alternative solutions whenever they are of interest.

The rigorous and clear solutions will aid the reader in further understanding the concepts and

applications in Counting (2nd Edition). An introductory section on problem solving as described by

George Pólya will be useful in helping the lay person understand how mathematicians think and

solve problems.

s ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH APPLICATIONS (2nd Edition)by Sze-Bi Hsu (National Tsing Hua University, Taiwan)

Review of the First Edition:

“The book under review is a well-written textbook on ODE, suitable for advanced undergraduate or

first year graduate students in Mathematics or Physical Sciences … The abundance of examples from

physical and biological sciences and engineering to show the applications of the theorems presented

in the text adds to the value of the book.” Zentralblatt MATH

During the past three decades, the development of nonlinear analysis, dynamical systems and their applications to science and engineering has stimulated renewed enthusiasm for the theory of Ordinary Differential Equations (ODE).

This useful book, which is based on the lecture notes of a well-received graduate course, emphasizes both theory and applications, taking numerous examples from physics and biology to illustrate the application of ODE theory and techniques.

Written in a straightforward and easily accessible style, this volume presents dynamical systems in the spirit of nonlinear analysis to readers at a graduate level and serves both as a textbook and as a valuable resource for researchers.

This new edition contains corrections and suggestions from the various readers and users. A new chapter on Monotone Dynamical Systems is added to take into account the new developments in ordinary differential equations and dynamical systems.

PARTITIONSOptimality and Clustering Vol II: Multi-Parameterby Frank K Hwang (National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan), Uriel G Rothblum (Technion, Israel) & Hong-Bin Chen (Academia Sinica, Taiwan)

The need for optimal partition arises from many real-world problems involving the distribution of limited resources to many users. The “clustering” problem, which has recently received a lot of attention, is a special case of optimal partitioning. This book is the first attempt to collect all theoretical developments of optimal partitions, many of them derived by the authors, in an accessible place for easy reference. Much more than simply collecting the results, the book provides a general framework to unify these results and present them in an organized fashion.

Many well-known practical problems of optimal partitions are dealt with. The authors show how they can be solved using the theory — or why they cannot be. These problems include: allocation of components to maximize system reliability; experiment design to identify defectives; design of circuit card library and of blood analyzer lines; abstraction of finite state machines and assignment of cache items to pages; the division of property and partition bargaining as well as touching on those well-known research areas such as scheduling, inventory, nearest neighbor assignment, the traveling salesman problem, vehicle routing, and graph partitions. The authors elucidate why the last three problems cannot be solved in the context of the theory.

21ST CENTURY GLOBAL HEALTH DIPLOMACYedited by Thomas E Novotny (San Diego State University, USA), Ilona Kickbusch (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Switzerland) & Michaela Told (Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, Switzerland)

“Health diplomacy is a complicated, multi-disciplinary challenge that needs both intellectual, and more

importantly, practical attention from our best diplomats and public health professionals. Professors

Novotny and Kickbusch have assembled such a group for this comprehensive review of all the

components of this emerging field. 21st Century Health Diplomacy can serve as a valuable reference

manual for students, researchers, and diplomats from across foreign policy, security, public health,

history and political science disciplines.”

RADM Kenneth Bernard, MD, DTMH

Assistant Surgeon General (Ret.)

Former Special Assistant to the President for Health and Security

“21st Century Global Health Diplomacy is a must read for those interested in how things now work in

the complex architectures of public health, security, and foreign policy. Globalization has presented

both challenges and opportunities in public health, and by better understanding the history, politics,

governance issues, and trends regarding these challenges, we can embrace more effectively the

opportunities now available in health diplomacy. Professors Novotny, Kickbusch, and colleagues have

provided a remarkable set of readings that will be of great value to today’s public health students,

foreign policy scholars, and practicing health diplomats.”

Professor David L Heymann, CBE

Head and Senior Fellow, Centre on Global Health Security, Chatham House, and

Professor, Infectious Disease Epidemiology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine

“‘Health diplomacy’ remains an awkward theme, lacking global consensus in both definition and

implementation. All global health practitioners and observers are struggling with the political and

economic sides of the diplomacy equation, while political leaders remain flummoxed regarding ‘health’

and governments’ obligations to the well-being of their own citizenries, much less humanity, planet-

wide. Novotny and Kickbusch’s compendium of essays helps a great deal. The book reveals the facets

of debate, and evolving thinking. I very much doubt we will reach any consensus on the boundaries

and implementation of ‘global health diplomacy’ during my lifetime, but this book will help sort out

many of the issues, and guide the debate.”

Laurie Garrett

Senior Fellow for Global Health at the Council on Foreign Relations, and

author of I HEARD THE SIRENS SCREAM: How Americans Responded to the 9/11

and Anthrax Attacks

Global health diplomacy begins with a recognition that the most effective international health

interventions are carried out with sensitivity to historical, political, social, economic, and cultural

differences. It focuses on the interplay of globalization, economic interdependence, social justice,

and the enlightened self-interests of nations. Global health diplomacy can help sustain peace and

economic stability in a globalized world, but the skills necessary for this endeavour are not taught

in standard health sciences curricula or in Foreign Service academies. However, they bear directly

on the success of international health cooperation, be it from the global north to the global south

or south-to-south cooperation. Global health diplomacy can be a critical pathway to assure good

global governance and improved international relations among the great powers and between these

powers and the developing world. It can be a mechanism to avert conflict and to augment health,

peace, solidarity, economic progress, and multinational cooperation.

e ACUPUNCTURETheories and Evidenceedited by Hai Hong (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)

Acupuncture is widely practised in the 21st century in scientifically developed countries for a wide

range of ailments ranging from chronic pain, giddiness and high blood pressure to gastrointestinal

disorders and sexual dysfunction. Yet the reasons for its vaunted efficacy remain a matter of

controversy. In traditional Chinese medical theory, the mechanism of action in acupuncture was

understood in terms of the flow of qi and the balance of yin and yang through the body’s meridians,

a complex network painstaking charted but never found. Modern medical researchers have

examined old and new needling points, and some view them as “trigger points” that stimulate

physiological responses in the body. There is also clear evidence of strong placebo effects,

although it has not been conclusively established that that this is either the main or the only

significant effect.

This volume contains twelve articles covering the latest scientific explanations of the mechanism

of acupuncture and critical reviews of clinical trials on its efficacy by leading scholars, including

Edzard Ernst at Exeter, Lixing Lao at the University of Maryland, PC Leung at the Chinese University

of Hong Kong and Thomas Lundeberg at Karolinska Institute.

THE GEOLOGY OF THE MODERN CANCER EPIDEMICThrough the Lens of Chinese Medicineby Tai Lahans (Cornerstone Cancer Clinic, Washington, USA)

Cancers are on the rise across the world. Except for viral-based cancers, overall cancers are

diseases that may be preventable. This book looks at the many levels of determined, probable,

and possible causation for several common cancers. These causes include realities found in

culture, anthropology, sociology, politics, the environment, agriculture and food, beliefs, and the

modern lifestyle. These realities are filtered through the perennial science of Chinese medicine

— an ecological system of knowing and understanding the human body as it relates to the world

around us.

The book covers lung, colorectal, breast, prostate, and virally-caused cancers. It interweaves

conventional medical knowledge of these cancers with modern realities of everyday life we all

live, and with Chinese medicine interpretations and strategies for treating probable pre-cancerous

conditions. This makes it a book that is useful for the practitioner of Chinese medicine. It is also

useful for the patient suffering a cancer diagnosis in terms of survivorship and for other medical

practitioners who wish to understand how integrated care for cancerous diseases and conditions

may relate to Chinese medicine and prevention.

The final chapters of the book are dedicated to finding answers for a cure for cancer through

making connections between how we live, what we believe, the environment we are creating based

on those beliefs, and the social and political mechanisms we now have in place that keep us from

change and, therefore, from the cure for cancer.

Readership: Chinese medicine practitioners and other medical practitioners, patients, care givers,

interested lay public.

e MEDICAL PHILOSOPHYConceptual Issues in Medicineby Mario Bunge (McGill University, Canada)

“Professor Mario Bunge surprises us once more with a lucid discussion of the philosophy of medicine

… The insights gained will provide the reader with a more complete vision of the underpinnings of

medical theory and practice … It is likely that one will find Bunge’s prose entertaining as well as

enlightening.”

Ernesto L Schiffrin

Professor of Medicine

McGill University, Canada

“Problems were well sorted out and evaluated in a lucid way. It became obvious that Bunge is an

experienced writer and that he has an important and readable message. He takes a very clear critical

position on various forms of alternative medicine.”

Erling Norrby

Professor of Virology

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, Sweden

“ … Bunge brings to his treatment of the subject a familiarity with a vast range of the relevant

literature regarding medical issues and his extensive expertise as a philosopher … His work is a

clear and cogent treatment of fundamental issues. I enthusiastically recommend the publication of

this brightly instructive book.”

Nicholas Rescher

Distinguished University Professor of Philosophy

University of Pittsburgh, USA

This is the first book that analyzes and systematizes all the general ideas of medicine, in particular

the philosophical ones, which are usually tacit. Instead of focusing on one or two points — typically

disease and clinical trial — this book examines all the salient aspects of biomedical research

and practice: the nature of disease; the logic of diagnosis; the discovery and design of drugs; the

design of lab and clinical trials; the crafting of therapies and design of protocols; the moral duties

and rights of physicians and patients; the distinctive features of scientific medicine and of medical

quackery; the unique combination of basic and translational research; the place of physicians and

nurses in society; the task of medical sociology; and the need for universal medical coverage.

Health care workers, medicine buffs, and philosophers will find this thought-provoking book highly

useful in their line of work and research.

MEDICAL SCIENCE IN THE 21ST CENTURYSunset or New Dawn?by Desmond J Sheridan (Imperial College London, UK)

This book sets out the unique and paradoxical position biomedical science finds itself in, in the

early 21st (superscript st) century. Science has never been stronger in shaping the world we live

in; progress in medical science during most of the last century has helped to transform health care

and prolong our lives; almost daily advances in biological science promise hope for the future and

yet medical science has been in serious decline for the past three decades.

Biomedical Science in the 21st (superscript st) Century: Sunset or New Dawn? sets out the recent

decline in the context of medical science's stunning past successes. Professor Sheridan discusses

the failure to translate new discoveries in biological science into medical advances; the dramatic

decline in research productivity in the pharmaceutical industry in the context of falling numbers

of clinical scientists; the disruption of medical science during prolonged and repeated reforms of

health care delivery; changing social and political attitudes towards health care and science; the

loss of trust in big pharmaceutical companies and recent revelations of fraud in science. The book

deals with the creative nature of original science, how it is driven by curiosity and self-motivation

and how these can be stifled by pettifogging managerialism.

The book presents a vision of what medical science can deliver during the coming half century

and what is needed to overcome the present challenges. It questions the assumptions that big is

best in the organisation of science and suggests a new model for drug development based on a

restoration of trust and a more constructive relationship between regulators and industry.

Nanotechnology and N

anoscienceNANODESIGNSome Basic Questionsby Wolfram Schommers (Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Germany)

There is no doubt that nanoscience will be the dominant direction for technology in this century,

and that this science will influence our lives to a large extent as well as open completely new

perspectives on all scientific and technological disciplines. To be able to produce optimal

nanosystems with tailor-made properties, it is necessary to analyze and construct such systems in

advance by adequate theoretical and computational methods. Since we work in nanoscience and

nanotechnology at the ultimate level, we have to apply the basic laws of physics. What methods

and tools are relevant here? The book gives an answer to this question. The background of the

theoretical methods and tools is critically discussed, and also the “world view” on which these

physical laws are based.

Such a debate is not only of academic interest but is of highly general concern, and this is because

we constantly move in nanoscience and nanotechnology between two extreme poles, between

“infinite life” and “total destruction”. On the one hand, through nanotechnology aging might be

soon a fact of the past; on the other hand, in the nano realm uncontrolled processes could lead to

a total destruction of the living conditions on the Earth.

CHAOS IN NATUREby Christophe Letellier (CORIA, University of Rouen, France)

Chaos theory deals with the description of motion (in a general sense) which cannot be predicted

in the long term although produced by deterministic system, as well exemplified by meteorological

phenomena. It directly comes from the Lunar theory — a three-body problem — and the difficulty

encountered by astronomers to accurately predict the long-term evolution of the Moon using

“Newtonian” mechanics. Henri Poincaré's deep intuitions were at the origin of chaos theory. They

also led the meteorologist Edward Lorenz to draw the first chaotic attractor ever published. But the

main idea consists of plotting a curve representative of the system evolution rather than finding

an analytical solution as commonly done in classical mechanics. Such a novel approach allows the

description of population interactions and the solar activity as well. Using the original sources, the

book draws on the history of the concepts underlying chaos theory from the 17th century to the last

decade, and by various examples, show how general is this theory in a wide range of applications:

meteorology, chemistry, populations, astrophysics, biomedicine, etc.

Readership: Advanced undergraduates and graduate students in nonlinear dynamics, and non-

experts interested in chaos theory.

ics 100 YEARS OF SUBATOMIC PHYSICS

edited by Ernest M Henley (University of Washington, USA) & Stephen D Ellis (University of Washington, USA)

By year 1911 radioactivity had been discovered for over a decade, but its origin remained a mystery.

Rutherford's discovery of the nucleus and the subsequent discovery of the neutron by Chadwick

started the field of subatomic physics — a quest for understanding the fundamental constituents

of matter.

This book reviews the important achievements in subatomic physics in the past century. The

chapters are divided into two parts: nuclear physics and particle physics. Written by renowned

authors who have made major developments in the field, this book provides the academics and

researchers an essential overview of the present state of knowledge in nuclear and particle

physics.

Readership: Students, researchers and academics interested in nuclear and particle physics.

ACHIEVING THE RARERobert F Christy’s Journey in Physics and Beyondby I-Juliana Christy (California Institute of Technology, USA)

“From ‘Christy’s Gadget’ (the first plutonium-based atomic bomb) and the war that it helped end, to the

forces that drive a star’s pulsations, to intercontinental romance, this biography illuminates the life,

passions, and intellect of one of the 20th century’s great theoretical physicists. It is a fitting tribute

to Robert Christy, whom I admired as a man as well as a scientist.”Kip S Thorne

The Feynman Professor of Theoretical Physics Emeritus California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

“From the atom bomb to the frontiers of astrophysics, Bob Christy’s contributions were brilliant and

seminal. In an intimate account rich with personal detail, we see up close a man of enormous energy,

grace, and wisdom.”H David Politzer

Caltech Nobel Prize in Physics 2004

“Bob Christy was an exemplary research scientist, teacher and university administrator at Caltech,

playing an important role in the development of the atomic bomb and in the efforts after World War

II to assure that nuclear weapons would not be used again. This informative biographical memoir

by his widow reveals the warmer side of his personality, remembered by his friends but hidden from

public view by his austere and analytic manner.”Harold Brown

President of Caltech 1969–1977 US Secretary of Defense 1977–1981

ANDREI SAKHAROVQuarks and the Structure of Matterby Harry J Lipkin (Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel)

In 1980, the Cold War was in full bloom. The Soviet father of the hydrogen bomb and Nobel

Peace Laureate turned dissident physicist, Andrei Sakharov, had been exiled to Gorki by the

Soviet authorities. Called “senile” and under heavy Soviet censorship, Sakharov had a hard time

communicating his latest scientific results to readers outside of Gorki. Some smuggled results

reached the author, Harry Lipkin, who then realized that he and Sakharov were both pioneers in a

new revolution on our understanding the structure of matter. The particle physics community had

resisted their revelation that the accepted building blocks of matter, neutrons and protons, were

composed of tinier building blocks called “quarks”. What followed was a remarkable adventure in

which both scientists fought the Soviet censors, smuggling postcards and manuscripts into and

out of the Soviet Union while trying to further scientific progress.

Against a backdrop of politics, suppression, and genius, Andrei Sakharov, Quarks and the Structure

of Matter details the search for the basic building blocks of matter, the path to understanding the

forces that bind them together, and how scientific knowledge is learned, communicated and passed

from one group of investigators to another.

Robert F Christy was a legendary physicist, one of the key players in some of the most dramatic

events of the 20th century. He was a student of Oppenheimer, who called him “one of the best

in the world.” He was a crucial member of Fermi's team when they first unleashed the unheard-of

energies of nuclear power, creating the world's first nuclear reactor on December 2, 1942. On

the Manhattan Project he was the key physicist in the successful test of the world's first atomic

bomb, the “Christy Gadget”, at Alamogordo on July 16, 1945. Almost immediately he turned his

talents to promoting the peaceful uses of atomic energy. He successfully opposed atmospheric

testing of atomic bombs and fought nuclear proliferation, a campaign that eventually led to the

SALT talks with the Soviet Union. His favorite subject was astrophysics where he made fundamental

contributions to the understanding of Cepheids, variable stars that are crucial distance indicators

in the universe.

Robert was equally fascinating as a man. In his mid-50's he became irresistably attracted to an

astrophysicist, but they were a continent and a generation apart. Near his 60's they started a happy

and fulfilling life together. He remained vigorous both mentally and physically into his 90's: he was

still galloping his horse at age 93.

Robert's story is one of overcoming obstacles, of hope, and of fulfillment.

ics AN ATOMIC EMPIRE

A Technical History of the Rise and Fall of the British Atomic Energy Programmeby C N Hill (Formerly Charterhouse, UK)

Britain was the first country to exploit atomic energy on a large scale, and at its peak in the mid-1960s, it had generated more electricity from nuclear power than the rest of the world combined.

The civil atomic energy programme grew out of the military programme which produced plutonium for atomic weapons. In 1956, Calder Hall power station was opened by the Queen. The very next year, one of the early Windscale reactors caught fire and the world's first major nuclear accident occurred.

The civil programme ran into further difficulty in the mid-1960s and as a consequence of procrastination in the decision-making process, the programme lost momentum and effectively died. No nuclear power stations have been built since Sizewell B in the late 1980s.

This book presents a study of Government papers that have recently become available in the public domain. For the first time in history, the research reactor programme is presented in detail, along with a study of the decision-making by the Government, the Atomic Energy Authority (AEA), and the Central Electricity Board (CEGB). This book is aimed at both specialists in nuclear power and the interested public as a technical history on the development and ultimate failure of the British atomic energy programme.

BEATING THE ODDSThe Life and Times of E A Milneby Meg Weston Smith

E A Milne was one of the giants of 20th century astrophysics and cosmology. His bold ideas, underpinned by his Christianity, sparked controversy — he believed two time scales operate in the universe.

Struggling against poverty, Milne won five scholarships to Cambridge, but he never finished his degree. In World War I he was invited to develop Horace Darwin's device for anti-aircraft gunnery and after the Armistice his prowess in ballistics took him straight to a Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. By the age of thirty he was a Manchester professor and a Fellow of the Royal Society. At Oxford he battled to improve the university's attitude towards science, and established a world-centre of astrophysics. He suffered from Parkinsonism in his forties, the consequence of his having had encephalitis lethargica as a young man. However, buoyed by his Christian faith, he did not slacken his pace. When he died, twice widowed, the author — Milne's daughter — was a teenager.

This book is born out of curiosity. The author's aim is to show the human face of science, how the course of her father's life was shaped by circumstance and by the influence of illustrious friends and colleagues such as Einstein, Eddington, G H Hardy, J B S Haldane, Hubble, F A Lindemann and Rutherford. Against all odds, Milne emerged as a scientific powerhouse — and a rebellious one at that.

DARK MATTER AND COSMIC WEB STORYedited by Jaan Einasto (Tartu Observatory, Estonia)

The concepts of dark matter and the cosmic web are some of the most significant developments in

cosmology in the past century. They have decisively changed the classical cosmological paradigm,

which was first elaborated upon during the first half of the 20th century but ran into serious

problems in the second half. Today, they are integral parts of modern cosmology, which explains

everything from the Big Bang to inflation to the large scale structure of the Universe.

Dark Matter and Cosmic Web Story describes the contributions that led to a paradigm shift from the

Eastern point of view. It describes the problems with the classical view, the attempts to solve them,

the difficulties encountered by those solutions, and the conferences where the merits of the new

concepts were debated. Amidst the science, the story of scientific work in a small country occupied

by the Soviet Union and the tumultuous events that led to its breakup are detailed as well.

This book is accompanied by a website which contains additional material: copies of the originals

of some crucial papers, astronomical movies, and movies which showcase the private life of the

author.

FIRST MAGNITUDEA Book of the Bright Skyby James B Kaler (University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, USA)

“First Magnitude” is an entry-level book for readers with brightly lit skies. Its purpose is to show

them that all is not lost, that they can still enjoy personal astronomy and have an appreciation of

the heavens no matter where they live. It concentrates on the Sun, Moon, the five bright planets,

and on the 23 brightest stars, which are visible from just about anywhere. The book concludes with

bright ephemeral phenomena: meteors, comets, and exploding stars. The concept is a platform

for introducing the reader to the wonders of the nighttime and daytime skies and serves as an

introduction to general astronomy.

ics TIME, SPACE, STARS AND MAN

The Story of the Big Bang

(2nd Edition)by Michael M Woolfson (University of York, UK)

The three greatest scientific mysteries, which remain poorly understood, are the origin of the universe, the origin of life and the development of consciousness. This book describes the processes preceding the Big Bang, the creation of matter, the concentration of that matter into stars and planets, the development of simple life forms and the theory of evolution that has given higher life forms, including mankind.

There are many popular and excellent science books that present various aspects of science. However, this book follows a narrow scientific pathway from the Big Bang to mankind, and depicts the causal relationship between each step and the next. The science covered will be enough to satisfy most readers. Many important areas of science are dealt with, and these include cosmology, particle physics, atomic physics, galaxy and star formation, planet formation and aspects of evolution. The necessary science is described in a narrative form that general-interest readers should understand, without the use of equations or formulae.

This 2nd edition includes several updates on the subjects that form the pillars of this book. They are: cosmology and astronomy, the features and formation of the solar system, the origin of life, and genetics and evolution. This book will appeal to readers with an interest in biology and those curious about the origins of the universe.

MODERN PHYSICSAn Introductory Text

(2nd Edition)by Jeremy I Pfeffer (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel) & Shlomo Nir (Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel)

This second edition of the successful textbook, Modern Physics: An Introductory Text, preserves the unique blend of readability, scientific rigour and authenticity that made its predecessor so indispensible a text for non-physics science majors. As in the first edition, it sets out to present 20th century physics in a form accessible and useful to students of the life sciences, medicine, agricultural, earth and environmental sciences. It is also valuable as a first reader and source text for students majoring in the physical sciences and engineering. Two new chapters have been added, one on Einstein's elucidation of Brownian Motion and the second on Quantum Electrodynamics.

Taking the discovery of the electron, the formulation of Maxwellian electromagnetism and Einstein's elucidation of Brownian motion as its starting point, the text proceeds to a comprehensive presentation of the three seminal ideas of 20th century physics: Special and General Relativity, Quantum Theory and the Nuclear Atom. From here the text moves on to the new discoveries prompted by these ideas, their impact on our understanding of natural phenomena and their application to the development and invention of the devices and technologies that define the 21st century.

Questions, exercises and problems for student assignments are found at the end of each of the six parts into which the text is divided; answers to the numerical questions are at the end of the book. The techniques by which trigonometric functions, phasors (rotating vectors) and complex numbers are employed in the mathematical description of wave motion are summarised in a supplementary section. In consideration of the audience for whom the book is intended, all mathematics other than that required for descriptive or illustrative purposes has been omitted from the main body of the text and incorporated into the 47 worked examples and 11 appendices.

Readership: Student: Non-physics science undergraduates and graduates, and students of the life sciences, medicine, agricultural, earth and environmental sciences.

PATH INTEGRALS FOR STOCHASTIC PROCESSESAn Introductionby Horacio S Wio (Universidad de Cantabria, Spain & CSIC, Spain)

This book provides an introductory albeit solid presentation of path integration techniques as applied to the field of stochastic processes. The subject began with the work of Wiener during the 1920's, corresponding to a sum over random trajectories, anticipating by two decades Feynman's famous work on the path integral representation of quantum mechanics. However, the true trigger for the application of these techniques within nonequilibrium statistical mechanics and stochastic processes was the work of Onsager and Machlup in the early 1950's. The last quarter of the 20th century has witnessed a growing interest in this technique and its application in several branches of research, even outside physics (for instance, in economy).

The aim of this book is to offer a brief but complete presentation of the path integral approach to stochastic processes. It could be used as an advanced textbook for graduate students and even ambitious undergraduates in physics. It describes how to apply these techniques for both Markov and non-Markov processes. The path expansion (or semiclassical approximation) is discussed and adapted to the stochastic context. Also, some examples of nonlinear transformations and some applications are discussed, as well as examples of rather unusual applications. An extensive bibliography is included. The book is detailed enough to capture the interest of the curious reader, and complete enough to provide a solid background to explore the research literature and start exploiting the learned material in real situations.

TOPICS IN MODERN PHYSICSTheoretical Foundationsby John Dirk Walecka (College of William and Mary, USA)

While the two previous books entitled Introduction to Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations and Advanced Modern Physics: Theoretical Foundations exposed the reader to the foundations and frontiers of today's physics, the goal of this third volume is to cover in some detail several topics omitted in the essentially linear progression of the first two.

This book is divided into three parts. Part 1 is on quantum mechanics. Analytic solutions to the Schrödinger equation are developed for some basic systems. The analysis is then formalized, concluding with a set of postulates for the theory. Part 2 is on applications of quantum mechanics: approximation methods for bound states, scattering theory, time-dependent perturbation theory, and electromagnetic radiation and quantum electrodynamics. Part 3 covers some selected topics in relativistic quantum field theory: discrete symmetries, the Heisenberg picture, and the Feynman rules for quantum chromodynamics.

The three volumes in this series taken together provide a clear, logical, self-contained, and comprehensive base from which the very best students can learn modern physics. When finished, readers should have an elementary working knowledge in the principal areas of theoretical physics of the twentieth century.

ics LET THERE BE LIGHT

The Story of Light from Atoms to Galaxies

(Second Edition)by Ann Breslin (University College Dublin, Ireland) & Alex Montwill (University College Dublin, Ireland)

This book is the first of its kind devoted to the key role played by light and electromagnetic radiation

in the universe. Readers are introduced to philosophical hypotheses such as the economy,

symmetry and the universality of natural laws, and are then guided to practical consequences such

as the rules of geometrical optics and even Einstein's well-known but mysterious relationship, E =

mc2. Most chapters feature a pen picture of the life and character of a relevant scientific figure.

These ‘Historical Interludes’ include, among others, Galileo's conflicts with the Inquisition, Fourier's

taunting of the guillotine, Neils Bohr and World War II, and the unique character of Richard Feynman.

The second edition has been revised and made more accessible to the general reader. Whenever

possible, the mathematical material of the first edition has been replaced by appropriate text

to give a verbal account of the mystery of the phenomenon of light and how its understanding

has developed from pre-historic to present times. The emphasis is on reading for interest and

enjoyment; formulae or equations which underpin and reinforce the argument are presented in a

form which does not interfere with the flow of the text.

The book will be of interest to students and teachers, as well as general readers interested in

physics.

TSUNAMI AND OTHER WAVESby Roger G Newton (Indiana University, USA)

After describing the awesome power of tsunami and their past occurrences, this book turns to the

history of explaining phenomena by means of mathematical equations. The book then describes

other wave phenomena and the laws governing them. Many different kinds of waves are covered,

including sound waves, electromagnetic waves, gravitational waves, water waves, the Schrödinger

wave function, and solitary waves. The laws governing them find use in all sorts of applications

as well as give rise to many effects. In our exploration of wave phenomena, we examine vibrating

strings and drums in musical instruments, ultrasound, rainbows and glories, microwave ovens,

and the cosmic microwave background, as well as deal with questions such as why the sky is blue

and how a radio works. Finally, we return to tsunami and the question: What laws govern them?

This book is designed for members of the general public interested in physics, its foundation in

mathematics, and its relation to our everyday lives.

Readership: Academics and students of physics as well as the general public.

FROM BIN LADEN TO FACEBOOK10 Days of Abduction, 10 Years of Terrorismby Maria A Ressa

“The ability to return to a harrowing experience — one that was deeply personal to her — and recount it in detail so that others may learn can only be borne of the courage and professionalism that she has always displayed as a journalist ... As we are utilizing social media to bring government closer to people, through her book, she shows that others are making use of the same instruments to spread an ideology of violence and terror. Her research into the methods of terrorist groups still active today will enable a better understanding of how these groups operate — and will serve as a good resource for those seeking peace and stability for all.” Benigno Aquino III

President of the Philippines

“Maria Ressa has crafted a remarkable, true and troubling story. Her description of the nexus between social media and terrorism sheds an important light on the challenges we face in confronting non-state actors bent on destroying innocent lives. Ressa does not flinch in describing the ordeal her co-workers experienced, her role in freeing them or issuing a clarion call to us to be aware of the danger we face from Internet-connected terrorists. Her work is a critical literary experience for us all.” Harry K Thomas, Jr

US Ambassador to the Philippines and former Director for South Asia, National Security Council

“One of the leading experts on terror in Southeast Asia, Maria Ressa has written a fascinating and important primer on the ties of family and loyalty that bind the region’s Islamist networks. Rich with the personal histories of some of the region’s most dangerous men and women, her account is framed by the gripping step-by-step drama of a kidnapping that brought terror to her doorstep in what she calls ‘the most challenging ten days of my life’.” Seth Mydans

Former New York Times Correspondent

Maria A Ressa has been interviewed by The Wall Street Journal (High-Profile Journalist Reshapes Her Role in Terrorism Fight) and Channel NewsAsia

The two most wanted terrorists in Southeast Asia — a Malaysian and a Singaporean — are on the run in the Philippines, but they manage to keep their friends and family updated on Facebook. Filipinos connect with al-Qaeda-linked groups in Somalia and Yemen. The black flag — embedded in al-Qaeda lore — pops up on websites and Facebook pages from around the world, including the Philippines, Indonesia, the Middle East, Afghanistan, Australia, and North Africa. The black flag is believed to herald an apocalypse that brings Islam's triumph. These are a few of the signs that define terrorism's new battleground: the Internet and social media.

In this groundbreaking work of investigative journalism, Maria Ressa traces the spread of terrorism from the training camps of Afghanistan to Southeast Asia and the Philippines. Through research done at the International Center for Political Violence & Terrorism Research in Singapore and sociograms created by the CORE Lab at the Naval Postgraduate School, the book examines the social networks which spread the virulent ideology that powered terrorist attacks in the past 10 years.

Many of the stories here have never been told before, including details about the 10 days during which Ressa led the crisis team in the Ces Drilon kidnapping case by the Abu Sayyaf in 2008. The book forms the powerful narrative that glues together the social networks — both physical and virtual — which spread the jihadi virus from bin Laden to Facebook.

Readership: Professionals and general readers interested in security and social issues and counter-terrorism research.

About the AuthorMaria A Ressa is the CEO and Executive Editor of Rappler, a social news network which uses a hearts-and-minds approach to news through a unique mood navigator.

Ms Ressa has been a journalist in Asia for more than 25 years, most of them as CNN's bureau chief in Manila (1987–1995) and Jakarta (1995–2005). She was CNN's lead investigative reporter focusing on terrorism in Southeast Asia, and wrote Seeds of Terror: An Eyewitness Account of Al-Qaeda's Newest Center of Operations in Southeast Asia in 2003.

In 1987, she was one of the founders of independent production company, Probe. In 2005, she took the helm of ABS-CBN News and Current Affairs, for six years determining strategic direction and managing more than 1,000 journalists for the largest multi-platform news operation in the Philippines. Her work aimed to redefine journalism by combining traditional broadcast, new media and mobile phone technology for social change.

She taught courses in Politics and the Press in Southeast Asia for her alma mater, Princeton University, and in broadcast journalism for the University of the Philippines. 10 Days, 10 Years: FROM BIN LADEN TO FACEBOOK is part of her work as Author-in-Residence and Senior Fellow at the International Center for Political Violence & Terrorism Research at RSIS in Singapore. ces HUMAN SECURITY STUDIES

Theories, Methods and Themesby Sorpong Peou (University of Winnipeg, Canada)

Human Security Studies: Theories, Methods and Themes examines the concept of human security

from different theoretical and methodological perspectives and shows how they help shed light on

the different themes of global intervention. Liberal perspectives, represented by global legalism and

developmentalism, share the optimism that human security can be ensured and enhanced through

strengthening global governance. Realists remain skeptical about this liberal vision. While also

critical of the liberal promise, critical theorists and feminists offer radical perspectives on human

security. All these perspectives help explain the challenges of military intervention for human

protection, micro-disarmament, international criminal justice, smart sanctions, human rights and

democracy promotion, and human development.

MEGACITY SLUMSSocial Exclusion, Space and Urban Policies in Brazil and Indiaedited by Marie-Caroline Saglio-Yatzimirsky (NALCO, France & Center for South Asian Studies (CEIAS) EHESS, France) & Frédéric Landy (University of Paris Ouest-Nanterre, France & Center for South Asian Studies (CEIAS) EHESS, France)

This book looks at slums and social exclusion in the four major megacities of India and Brazil, and

analyzes the interrelationships between urban policies and housing and environmental issues. The

challenges posed in Delhi, Mumbai, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo have spurred public reformers

into action through housing, rehabilitation and conservation programs. Civil society and the

inhabitants of these cities have also begun to get involved. On the other hand, one must wonder

whether these challenges were partly created by the deficiencies of these very reformers and civil

society, be it their lack of intervention (as advocates of government intervention would argue), or

the flaws and inadequacies of their actions (as supporters of the free market would suggest). Are

policies alleviating or aggravating social exclusion? This book explores these questions and more.

POLITICAL SCIENCE RESEARCH METHODSExploring America at a Crossroadsby Cal Clark (Auburn University , USA)

The principal goal of this textbook is to provide clear and elementary descriptions of the major

statistical techniques used in political and social science research. The book is built on two

basic assumptions. First, that it is possible to explain social science statistics in a simple and

straightforward manner so that students with a minimal background in math can understand even

fairly advanced techniques, such as multiple and logistic regression. Second, that undergraduate

and even graduate students have less trouble in understanding specific techniques than in

interpreting what statistical results mean substantively. Consequently, the book stresses the

interpretation of research findings.

In essence, the book argues that political science research is like piecing a jigsaw puzzle together.

Pieces of information — statistical and non-statistical — must be assembled and interpreted both

logically and creatively.

The text is organized in a unique manner, using the various techniques being discussed to analyze

the current state of the United States as it seemingly stands at a crossroads in both its political

orientations and socioeconomic nature. To make the statistical interpretation more meaningful

and easier to understand, the results throughout the book are integrated by their focus upon two

central questions related to the theme of America at a Crossroads: Are Americans conservative

or liberal in their political beliefs? How do economic and social outcomes in America compare to

those in other developed democracies?

ces UNIVER-CITIES: STRATEGIC IMPLICATIONS

FOR ASIAReadings from Cambridge and Berkeley to Singaporeby Anthony SC Teo (Nanyang Technological University, Singapore)

“Univer-Cities will accelerate. University of British Columbia is an incorporated municipality porously contiguous with the garden City of Vancouver; and pioneered social embeddedness through private-public co-development which raised some $500 million for our endowment.”

Arthur Hara OC Past Chairman, Board of Governors

University of British Columbia

“Living in the town of Pasadena a stone’s throw away from Caltech, I enjoy the synergies of a simple life in science amidst the city’s community, while cultural diversity is provided by the nearly Los Angeles. Looking across the Pacific to Asia, its rapidly growing high-rise universities are an integral component of megacities. I envisage a wide field for the development of mutually inspired novel formats of academic institutions that nevertheless allow the young generation a life in the city. In recent times there has been instead, a regrettable moving of university campuses to areas far removed from city centers, a separation that vertical and high-rising universities can now make unnecessary.”

Professor Dr Rudolph A Marcus Arthur Amos Noyes Professor of Chemistry, California Institute of Technology and

1992 Nobel Laureate for Chemistry

“Anyone who is involved in either industry or education will know that today, the relationship between the university and its host city is increasingly symbiotic and dynamic. Today, the university and the city collaborate and share to enable both to become greater than the sum of their parts. In Asia, I have no doubt that we have only seen the tip of the iceberg, and that the most exciting developments in ‘univer-cities’ are still ahead of us. This book helps to illuminate the key issues and is therefore an apt beginning to that journey.”

Univer-cities: Strategic Implications for Asia aims to redefine the multi-faceted symbiotic relationship between universities and host cities. The four readings in this reader will invite readers to challenge the traditional view of what a university is as a place, and re-define the university as a space; drawing discoverers, creators, and seekers who are keen to preserve and enhance the value of higher education in Asia. This reader will also show how universities can make a huge and innovative impact on the immediate, surrounding, and global communities that are drawn into its ambit of its campus and sought out by the university in inter-univer-city and trans-displinary linkages.

Written by worldly academic leaders and professionals from Berkeley, Cambridge, Canberra and Singapore — who are prominent in fields of higher education strategy, campus cum urban planning, design, and architecture — the readings will shed some light on the future and power of univer-cities.

It also shares seven strategic implications the concept has on Asian universities — this is especially timely and apt for a part of the world where education, togetherness, hard work, high-savings rates, and economic growth are emerging tectonic changes that the trinity of China, India and the Southeast Asian region engenders. It is no wonder that several top Asian cities have universities that have been ranked among the Top 50 universities in the world.
