Students form small groups (2-3) in each subject and research possibilities on the Internet and elsewhere. Groups decide on narrow topic for detailed investigation and define tasks to be done. Students doing two sciences may choose an interdisciplinary topic and do double lab time on this, or they may choose different topics for each subject. Formulate precise research question. 3 DEFINITION OF ACTIVITIES Homework and subject lessons in weeks 8, 9, 10, 11: Each group must plan the investigations to be undertaken. The plans must include necessary equipment and materials. Each group must consult subject teachers about the feasibility of the pro- posed investigations (both in terms of time and available equipment in the school or in external labs). If special materials are needed, teachers must know no later than week 9 to allow for delivery from external sources. 4 ACTION Investigations in weeks 8, 9, 10, 11: The actual experimental work, performed either at school or in external labs with which prior arrangements have been made. Students doing two sciences will do two days of experimental work: either two different investigations or an interdisci- plinary longer investigation. Preparation of a brief presentation: issues, results, successes and failures. 5 EVALUATION Monday 4 April, 12:05 - 16: Presentations and project evaluation Groups share their findings (results and issues, successes and failures). Each group make brief presentations (in a suitable format). All students and teachers evaluate the entire project. 6 Report Friday 8 April: Hand in report(s) to subject teacher(s) Each student submit an individual group 4 project report (two if doing two sciences). GROUP 4 PROJECT THE GROUP 4 PROJECT REQUIREMENTS The Group 4 Project forms part of the Practical Scheme of Work, and the following elements are ex-pected:

interdisciplinary collaboration appreciation of the implications of science and the limitations of scientific study development of teamwork development of planning skills exchange or sharing of both data collected and issues raised approximately 10-15 hours involvement time.

WORK SCHEDULE 1 SELECTION The group 4 teachers have chosen the topic FORENSIC SCIENCE with the gen-

eral research question How does science contribute to solving crimes? 2 PLANNING Monday 7 February (8 11:35 for ALL):

Introduction to the topic and the possibilities open for investigation in each subject.

3 DEFINITION OF ACTIVITIES Homework and subject lessons in weeks 8, 9, 10, 11:

Each group must plan the investigations to be undertaken. The plans must include necessary equipment and materials.

Each group must consult subject teachers about the feasibility of the pro-posed investigations (both in terms of time and available equipment in the school or in external labs). If special materials are needed, teachers must know no later than week 9 to allow for delivery from external sources.

4 ACTION Investigations in weeks 8, 9, 10, 11: The actual experimental work, performed either at school or in external labs with

which prior arrangements have been made. Students doing two sciences will do two days of experimental work: either two different investigations or an interdisci-plinary longer investigation. Preparation of a brief presentation: issues, results, successes and failures.

5 EVALUATION Monday 4 April, 12:05 - 16: Presentations and project evaluation Groups share their findings (results and issues, successes and failures). Each

group make brief presentations (in a suitable format). All students and teachers evaluate the entire project.

6 Report Friday 8 April: Hand in report(s) to subject teacher(s)

Each student submit an individual group 4 project report (two if doing two sciences).
