PeoplePower-Harnessingcollectiveknowledge for economic successThe power of the people who support the meetings industry will be recog-nized in this panel discussion format-ted event. The concept of harnessing collective knowledge captures both the main theme of educating delegates, of which the meetings and convention industry is based on, as well as the collective harnessing of knowledge amongst our industry partners and supporters.(Tourism&governmentincluded).

The economic impact of the Meetings &ConventionIndustryincludesdirectrevenues, generated by meetings and events themselves as well as delegate spending and the indirect economic benefitsgeneratedthroughjobcreationand employment.

In about 11 months, the City of VancouverandtheResortMunicipalityofWhistlerwillhosttheVancouver2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. Several new and exciting venues were built for the Olympics and they are all ready now. One such venue is Whistler Olympic Park, which was constructed in the beautiful CallaghanValley,about25kilometresfrom Whistler. It offers a great new location for an incentive trip or corpo-rate event.

Whistler Olympic Park is the site of the cross-country,biathlon,Nordiccom-bined and ski jumping events for the

2010OlympicGames.Itoffers55kilo-metresofcross-countryskitrails,fivekilometres of lit trails for night skiing, a biathlon range and stadium, and snow-shoeing trails, something for everyone. In the summer, this valley surrounded by spectacular scenery and wilderness is the perfect location for outdoor team building activities, but watch out for the bears!

Therearefivedifferentindoormeet-ing spaces including a cozy lodge with woodburningfireplaces.Everythingwas built with minimized disturbance to the natural environment, such as

avoiding old growth forests and using buffer zones to protect streams and wetlands. Also composted waste wood mixedwithwildflowerseedswasusedto revegetate slopes and provide wild-life habitat. Another key to the compre-hensive focus on sustainability are the localFirstNations(Lil'watNationandSquamish Nation) who were involved in the development throughout.

Another new venue in the Whistler area, which is great for incentive and meeting programs, is the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre. It embodies the spirit of partnership between two Nations, Lil'wat Nation and Squamish Nation, and their shared values around preserving and sharing their traditional cultures. An intimate meeting, dramatic incentive event, or an once-in-a-lifetimewed-ding, the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre in Whistler BC offers flexibility, authenticity, and unique cultural options for an unforget-table event. Consider a traditionalFirstNations

feast in the Great Hall amidst authentic indigenous art or in the cozy octagon shapedIstkenHall.Thehighlyflexiblespace accommodates groups of vari-ous sizes for banquets and receptions.

VancouverOlympic/ParalympicCentreopened just a couple of weeks ago. It islocatedinalivelyVancouvercom-munity that includes the beautiful Queen Elizabeth Park and views of the local mountains. After the 2010 Winter Games, this curling venue will become amulti-purposecommunityrecreationcentre that will include an ice hockey rink, gymnasium, library and six to eight sheets of curling ice. Attached to, and being constructed with the new curling venue and community centre, is anewaquaticcentrewitha50-metrepool and leisure pool.

Right next to the new Centre is the his-torical Nat Bailey Stadium, established in1951.Ithasoftenbeenreferredtoas the “prettiest little ballpark in North America”. Spectators are right on top of the action die to the narrow foul ter-ritory in the park. They are also treated to one of the few manual scoreboards still in operation as well as the pictur-esque backdrop of Queen Elizabeth Park.
