Form A

Once, in a poor village by the Baltic Sea, there lived an Orphan boy named Joseph. When he was still very small, Joseph knew that life in the village was dreary and hard. No one laughed. No one danced. But Joseph saw that all around him the world danced. Fire danced in the hearth. Trees swayed with the wind. Clouds danced in the sky. Even the sun and the moon moved across the heavens. When his work was done, Joseph ran to the shore and felt in his bones how the waves danced in the sea. And Joseph longed to move, to sway, to dance with the world. He dreamed that one day he would dance down the road from village to village, even as far as the southernmost sea. But he told no one. No one would understand. One evening, when the wind blew and silver clouds flew over the water, an old man appeared on the shore. He wore a long red coat, a tall green hat, and a pair of silver shoes.

A mother hen is with her chicks almost all the time. She keeps them warm under her feathers. She helps them find food and she keeps them safe from other animals. What makes the baby chicks and the mother hen stay together? They stay together because they “talk” to each other. When the mother hen goes cluck-cluck-cluck, the chicks come running to her. When the chicks go peep-peep-peep, the mother hen comes to them. Scientists did not always know what made a mother hen come to her chicks. Did she come to them because she saw them or because she heard them? One day a scientist made an experiment. He put a chick under a big glass bowl. The mother hen could see her chick, but she could not hear it. No one outside the bowl could hear it. Peep-peep-peep went the chick, but the mother hen walked right past the bowl.

The balloon surged up the sky. Looking down, Henry saw the river like a black ribbon winding between white fields. The Kid and the Man looked as small as cats. Henry loved the glorious bubble that carried him across the sky. But now he’d had his flight. It was the Man’s turn to solo. Time to go down. How? Henry stood up and tried pulling the cord. The roar of the burner scared him, and he tottered on the edge of the basket. To keep from falling, he clung to the cord, and the burner kept roaring. The balloon rose higher. That was not the way to get down out of the sky. Henry hopped to the basket floor. He looked for something to push or pull that meant ‘down’. Nothing. Standing on his hind legs, he looked over the edge of the basket. He couldn’t see his people anymore. And the balloon was sailing toward the mountains. Henry glared up into the bright cave of the balloon. “Come on down now!” he yowled. Then he saw a cord leading down from the balloon. He could reach it from the edge of the basket. When he clawed the cord, he saw a hole of sky open in the balloon cloth.

F3.1.3 Read aloud with fluency in a manner that sounds like natural speech (rate, smoothness, expression) at 80 correct words per minute (cwpm)

on a 3rd grade level passage. Form D

“Wake up, boy!”

Davy opened his eyes. Cookie was standing over him.

“I’ll be right there,” Davy said.

He pushed his blanket aside and folded it to make a bedroll.

The cowboys sleeping around the campfire would soon wake up

hungry for breakfast. And the cowboys riding in from watching

the cattle all night would be even hungrier.

A big longhorn steer, with a hide so black it nearly looked

blue, lumbered up to Davy and nudged his hand. “Old Blue,”

Davy said softly, “Are you hungry, too?”

Old Blue grunted and shook his widespread horns. Davy

laughed. “You think you’re better than all those other longhorns.

Who ever heard of a big steer sleeping around the campfire

with the cowboys!”

He patted Old Blue’s shiny forehead.

“You’re the smartest old steer I ever saw. Not many

ranchers own a steer who can lead all the rest of the cattle on a

trail drive.”

Davy hurried over to the chuck wagon to help Cookie. He was

frying bacon in a black skillet over the fire. “Pa said I can ride

today!” exclaimed Davy. “Huh! Guess you’ll feel like a real big

shot!” Cookie said. Davy smiled. He would be riding up front

with the cowboys who guided the longhorn cattle over the trail.

Turtles and Tortoises

Some people believe that the word turtle is another word for tortoise. They believe that the two words are names for the same animal, but that is not true. Turtles and tortoises are related, and they are both reptiles. However, there are differences between these two animals. Most turtles live in salt water and can swim. They have hard shells and flippers for swimming. Tortoises usually live on land. Land tortoises have legs instead of flippers so that they can move on land. Sometimes tortoises live in fresh water, but not in salt water like turtles. The tortoises that live in freshwater have webbed feet and sharp claws so they can move well in water and on land, as well. Both turtles and tortoises hatch from eggs and both can be very large. Both animals have been around since prehistoric times.

1.) What is the main idea of the story? Circle the correct answer.
