What is Winterim?

Winterim is an innovative program where students get the chance to experience learning beyond the cur-

riculum. Winterim is designed to give students the opportunity to choose classes that are not part of the

standard school learning experience. Furthermore, students will have the opportunity to literally travel to

Washington DC, Sea Camp, Costa Rica, and New York for a variety of educational trips (some trips only

available to specific grade levels). In addition, as juniors and seniors, FA students have the opportunity to

experience a profession first-hand before heading off to college.

The FA school year is divided so that the first semester concludes prior to Christmas vacation. Winterim

is an interim “semester” between the first and second semesters. The dates of Winterim for the 2013-2014

school year are January 6th-17th, 2014.

Schedule

Winterim is divided into two separate weeks: Week 1 and Week 2.

The school day is divided into two different sessions: Session A and Session B.

One course is taken per session.

Morning Course (Session A) 7:45 a.m. – 10:50 a.m.

Lunch 10:55 a.m. – 11:55 a.m. on campus

Afternoon Course (Session B) 12:00 p.m. – 3:05 p.m.

The longer class periods make it possible to offer courses that ordinarily could not be held in a shorter

class time. Students need to check course descriptions carefully to be familiar with individual class expec-

tations. Some courses may be scheduled in the morning (Session A) or afternoon (Session B) only, while

others may be scheduled for a full day (Session FD).

LUNCH

FA’s lunch program will continue through Winterim. Students are welcome to bring their own lunch.

Winterim is a required part of Foundation Academy’s curriculum.

January 6-10, 2014

1/2 day or Full Day

Junior’s and Senior’s Only

One of the unique learning opportunities that Winterim provides at Foundation Academy is the in-

ternship program. Students in 11th and 12th grade, with the help of their parents, can design and par-

ticipate in their own internship. Internship ideas must receive administrative approval. Internships

can take place abroad, domestically, or within the Metro-Orlando area. It is up to the student to set

up the internship. Internships scheduled during Winterim allow students to observe and experience a

working professional’s life for one or two weeks. Their experience in the working world allows them to

see the joy and challenges faced by professionals in their respective fields. These experiences can aid

in major decisions the students are currently facing, and more importantly, in the discovery of how

God has uniquely equipped them. As part of growing and learning experience during their intern-

ships, students will be required to share reflections on their experiences via an online forum.

The Holocaust

Between 1939 and 1945, Nazi Germany murdered 6 million Jewish civilians. The Holocaust is one of

the most significant events in history, and it is important that we understand both why and how a

modern, “Christian” nation began and carried out a genocidal program to systematically annihiliate

all the Jews in Europe. It is a story about how history is shaped by forces such as human nature,

world views, charismatic leaders, economics, modern technology, and amoral nationalism.

Forensics

January 6-10, 2015

12:00-3:06pm

Cost: $20

Human beings have a desire to see that justice is done when society’s rules are broken. How do those in authority determine who is the guilty person? Without a real confession of guilt or reliable eye wit-nesses, it is difficult to know for sure. Forensics is a technique for scientifically determining who is responsible for the crime and confirming guilt or innocence. In this class, students will study types of evidence that may be collected at a crime scene: blood, hair, fibers, footprints, fingerprints, paint, chemical materials, and DNA. Likewise, the students will study general principles of the justice and law enforcement systems. The principle is this – wherever we have been, we leave pieces of ourselves behind.
