McNelis Council #1481 NOVEMBER 2018 https://kofc1481.org What an exciting year this has been thus far, and so much more to come!!! With October being Respect Life Month, the USCCB has chosen this year's Respect Life theme to be "Every Life: Cherished, Cho- sen, Sent.” As Knights, we very much respect all life and have been very active in our Pro-Life efforts. Some of our brothers have taken trips to Pittsburgh for peaceful prayer vigils in front of Planned Parenthood for an end to abortion. We participated in the Life Chain on Philadelphia Street and supported Life Choices at their recent fundraising banquet. The Baby Bottles are out as our annual campaign is underway. This provides support for daily operations of the My Choice Med- ical Clinic here in Indiana. This year, 27 lives have been saved where the mothers were consider- ing abortion. Another way we “Respect Life” was by making a monetary and time donation to sell hot dogs for the Grocers Fight Cancer event at Giant Eagle. I’d like to thank all of the Brother Knights who paid respects to our deceased Brother, Jim Federline, by praying the rosary at his view- ing and attending his funeral. Fr. Tom and all the Federline family are very grateful. Additionally, I encourage everyone to attend our Memorial Mass on 11 November at St. Thomas More University Parish, as we show respect for our deceased Brother Knights and support their families. The Greensburg Chapter's Memorial Mass will be 19 November at Clelian Heights (near Greensburg, Pennsylvania). David Slusarick is the new semi- narian whom we will be support- ing. We are updating our rosary tree, see the article inside. Our C.O.A.L. ticket sale is ongoing so please do what you can to support this great fundraiser. The Knights have again offered to help St. Anne's Home by selling lottery calendars after Masses on 24/25 November. Please offer to help sell or buy calendars, they would be great Christmas gifts! There are seven Sacra-ments of the Catholic Church. Sacraments are not magic; they do not overwhelm with their pow-er. One of our seven Sac-

raments is the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation. Jesus himself instituted the sacrament and gave the authority to his apostles to forgive sins.

Why, then, are there Catholics who don’t go to confession? Some may say they don’t go because the priest knows them personally. Others say, “if the priest knew my sins he would never talk to me again!” Don’t kid yourselves! As if the sins that you confess were something the priests haven’t heard before! Some even say, “I go behind the screen and he knows my voice.” I say, try confess-ing in Australian accent! See how that works for you.

We have a culture that tells us we don’t need to go to confession; a cul-ture that says that sin and evil don’t exist; a culture that tells us that sin and evil are invented by the Church to control and manipulate people. Sin and evil really exist and are in our world and in our lives. There is a line that separates good from evil and it doesn’t lie out far off somewhere... It lies at the center of our hearts.

There are non-Catholics (and Catho-

lics) who say that there is no need to confess to a priest. They claim that they confess to God because, “me and Jesus are buddies; we’re close. I tell Him my sins and He forgives me.” This is a lovely idea, isn’t it? Only, it doesn’t work. We are human beings and, and as such we have the phe-nomenal ability to deceive ourselves into believing all sorts of crazy things. That’s why the “me and Jesus” angle doesn’t work.

When Jesus instituted the sacrament of confession, He was acting as a di-vine psychologist. He knows we all have a great need to confess. Every single one of us, everyday, do things to stop us from becoming the best version of ourselves. We do these things and carry that stuff around with us everywhere we go: work, home, family, etc. Our sins affect us physi-cally, emotionally, intellectually, spirit-ually, and psychologically. And we all have a great need to confess.

The sacrament of mercy is a sure refuge; in it our wounds are cured. All errors, large or small, are cured be-cause it is not only just a judgment where our transgressions are forgiv-en, but also a medicine for the soul; not to woefully relate things that have happened, but to humbly accuse one-self of one’s errors and weaknesses before God himself, who will forgive

us through the priest and will inundate us with his grace. We confess not for God’s sake, but for our sake; Not to help Him, but to help us!

As we read from scripture, “So let us confidently approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and to find grace for timely help.” (Hebrews 4:16).

Fr. Andy Gumangan STMUP Parochial Vicar

Sir Knights, at the 27 September meeting, our assembly voted to begin a new initiative of supporting a semi-narian. Christopher Pujol, who is studying at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnwood, PA, will be receiving our prayers and financial help. Christopher was recommended to us by Fr. Tyler Bandura, who is the head of seminary programs for the Diocese of Greensburg.

Due to a lack of quorum, a vote could not be taken at our 24 October meet-ing to change the meeting dates from the 4th Wednesday to the 2nd Wednesday of each month to corre-spond with our general council meet-ing. We will next attempt to vote on this change at the 23 January meet-ing. Please consider attending!

INDIANA KNIGHTS MARCH ON PLANNED PARENTHOOD IN PITTSBURGH

On Wednesday, 10 October, several of our Brother Knights from KofC #1481 and Indiana, PA Pro-Life advocates travelled to the Planned Parenthood building in Pittsburgh, PA as part of the 40 Days for Life cam-paign. The day was filled with peaceful protest of the evil of abortion, recitation of the Most Holy Rosary, hymns of life, and Pro-Life Fellow-ship. As we continue to preach Christ’s message of love of all life, let us thank those who were able to represent the Catholic community of Indi-ana! Br. Michael D. Kostick

Recitation of the Rosary at the funeral home the evening prior to burial of a Brother Knight is a long-standing tradi-tion of councils throughout our Order. This is a great way to pay our respect to a deceased Brother Knight and his family and to ask for our Blessed Mother to intercede in

prayer on our behalf. Though simple in nature, the families are always grateful for the compassion and fraternity

shown by Brother knights, of which their dearly departed loved one was a proud member.

We are in the process of updating and modernizing our Council’s Rosary Tree at this time. Being a prayerful broth-er on the new Rosary Tree means that you will be notified when we are going to pray the rosary at the funeral home.

Therefore, this does not require a excessive commitment of your time. With the new structure of the Rosary Tree, cer-

tain Brother Knights will be designated as Rosary Cap-tains. The captains will be the only individuals who will

need to make correspondence with the rest of our Brother Knights on the Rosary Tree. You will not be asked to make phone calls unless you are a Rosary Captain! Listed with

this article is our current Rosary Tree.

I ask that you please take a look and let me know if (a) you would like to remain on this list, (b) you would like added to this list, or (c) you would like to be listed as a Rosary Cap-

tain. I can be contacted via email ([email protected]) or phone (724.422.3905). I ask that you prayerfully consider joining this taskforce as it is a very meaningful service that we provide to the families of

our fallen Brother Knights! Br. Michael Morris

St. Anne Home, located in Greensburg, is a ministry of the Felician Sisters of North America. They are dedicated to the continued healing mission of Jesus Christ by providing a continuum of care and supportive services to adults, their families, and their caregivers. St. Anne Home offers intermedi-ate and skilled nursing care, while Villa Angela at St. Anne Home provides personal care services in a caring, residential setting.

Again this year, the Knights of Columbus in the Greensburg Diocese have been asked to help sell these fundraising, lot-tery calendars in our churches after Masses on 24/25 Novem-ber. I will be asking for volunteers to sell these calendars at your parishes. Individuals can win money everyday of the year based on the corresponding evening three-digit lottery number. Calendars cost $25.00. This is the 3rd year that the Knights have helped support the Saint Anne Home with selling these Calendars to raise money for Catholic, Pro-life care. Please contact me via cell (724.467.2991) or email ([email protected]) for more information.

Brother Knights, after processing all of the C.O.A.L. tick-ets turned in at our last council meeting, we have sold 118 booklets (which is only 39% of our goal of 300).

Last year we sold 210 booklets!

I’d like to share a few thoughts with you… If you still have the booklet of tickets which was sent to you in your September issue of The de Sales, I ask that you please complete the in-formation and mail it back to me at the address listed below. I also ask that we prayerfully consider redoubling our efforts to sell more booklets to our friends, coworkers, and neigh-bors. Maybe even consider buying another booklet for your-self! If you are interested and able to sell more booklets, please let me know and I will get as many as you want to you via mail or personal delivery.

Another option that is available to you… if you send me a completed check attached with your name, address, phone number, and email address, I am willing to complete the book-let for you and will mail the stubs back to you.

If you believe you can sell more books, please contact me via cell (724.388.0607) or email ([email protected]). Pay-ments can be made with cash or check (made out to “K of C Council #1481). You can bring your ticket stubs and payment to any Council meeting or mail them to me:

I would like to extend a large thank you and good luck to everyone who purchased and/or sold football sweepstakes tickets this September. We had a very successful promotion as 274 total tickets were sold

by our council. This translates to a profit of $980.00!

Congratulations go out to our highs sellers: Br. Chuckie Chiplis, Br. Larry Miller, Br. Pat Wil-liams, and Br. Josh Rosenberger, each of whom sold over 25 tickets!

I would like to thank all of my Brother Knights who helped in dis-tributing baby bottles after all the Masses at St. Thomas More Uni-versity, St. Bernard of Clairvaux, and Church of the Resurrection parishes this past month. I espe-cially would like to thank Br. Mi-chael Morris, Bernard Liscik, Kevin Strezo, Chauncey Ross, and John Hardesty for speaking to parishioners at the end of the Masses!

Each speaker let our Catholic com-munities know exactly where their contributions are going (MyChoice Pregnancy Center on the campus of IUP), and how many lives have been saved at this specific center (27 lives this year; 94 lives since opening in 2013). The money raised by the Knights of Columbus during this campaign is used to purchase ultrasound equipment. This vital piece of education can help mothers see the baby inside of her womb! You should all be proud of supporting this Pro-Life center. Thank you, my brothers!

As part of our Pro-Life programming, Council #1481 would like to revive our food drive collection in support of the St. Thomas More University Parish Food Pantry. Not only can this can help us to meet the programming requirements and meet eligibility for a possible rebate from Supreme councils, but it also gives us the opportunity to feed the hungry within our Indiana community. I ask that you please bring non-perishable food items to our council meetings every 2nd Wednesday of every month. Br. Michael Morris

Grand Knight

In the Catholic Church, we dedicate the entire month of November to the redemption of the Holy Souls in Pur-gatory. Throughout this month, please pray for the souls of our faithfully departed brothers and sisters, especially those whom we knew and loved.

The Holy Catholic Church teaches that those souls in purgatory died in the mercy of God, thus being called holy. However, due to some attachment to sin at their death, spiritual purification of their souls must be under-gone so that their love for God with all of their heart, mind, and soul may be filled for eternity. These holy souls are considered to be “saved souls.” This means that they eventually will enjoy the reward of heaven. But, during their lives they were not the perfect souls that Christ commanded them to be (Matthew 5:48), and for which he provided every grace and means for them to become (2 Peter 1:3). We, as Catholic Christians, are meant to die after living as saints. Those who die in the ever-lasting love of God but fall short of holiness due to sinful habits must be purified before being welcomed to share in the beatific vision... the vision of God which those saints in heaven enjoy eternally.

Those souls in purgatory can no longer pray for themselves, therefore they are known as “poor” souls and can no longer merit anything for themselves as they could during their time on earth. They must rely entirely on us to pray and make temporal sacrifices on their behalf. As they are part of the Communion of Saints nevertheless, they de-pend upon our prayers and works to help ease their suffering and quickly advance them through their purification so that they can join with the saints in heaven.

Prayers for the faithfully departed please God, who makes use of our prayers to help purify these souls that He un-ceasingly loves. As Brother Knights, this is an act of charity that we can give for those we have known and loved, for our ancestors who gave us life, for those who were our benefactors, for those whose memory is lost, and for those who have no one else to pray for them.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the Mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
