THESIS PROJECT: TAKING BACK THE TARMAC
7

METROLAB
27
Collaborator: Bryan SistinoSpring 2012
Metrolab was a design-build studio with a focus on adapting old building stock in Over the Rhine, Cincinnati, OH. The focus here was on a smart wall system that could be flexibly deployed without hav-ing to touch the existing brick walls of the houses.

CASTING
33
Collaborators:Dylan Fischer, Joseph Southard,Bryan SistinoSpring 2012
Casting was an exploration into the methods of casting and curing concrete, with an eye to pushing the limits of the material. The project presented here investigates making concrete thin and translu-cent by casting it in bubble wrap.
35
DIGITAL FABRICATION
37
Spring 2012
Digital Fabrication focused on utilizing CNC milling software and technology to explore ways of mak-ing. The class acted not only as an introduction to using software, but also as an introduction to digi-tal fabrication methods.

RE-SKIN
45
Fall 2011
The Re-skin studio was focused on making a sus-tainable skin for a cold storage facility on Chicago’s west side. What is proposed here is a passive shad-ing facade, where aperture size is related to the amount of solar radiation falling on a surface.

FULL DISCLOSURE
51
Collaborators:Derek Sommers, Austin WellerFall 2011
Full Disclosure is an exploration of lighting and its effects on space. A unfinished lobby space on a classmates project was used as a jumping off point for the design of a spa lobby. This project won the 35th Cooper Source Awards.
CRANBROOK WELLNESS CENTER
53
Fall 2010/Spring 2011
The Cranbrook Wellness Center was part of a two part comprehensive studio. The first part looked at establishing materiality and massing. The second studio refined the design and looked at integrating structure and details into the design.

ALTERATION 2010/KINETIC SCULPTURE

Kinetic Sculpture Collaborators:Will Allport, Matthew Brown, Dave OdomAlteration 2010 Collaborators: Senior Studio
Spring 2010
This was a two part project. The first part consisted of a test sculpture, which then led to the large Alteration 2010 sculpture which was installed in downtown Greenville, SC.
65
RECIPROCITY
67
Collaborators:Jason Butz, Carla LandaFall 2009
Reciprocity addresses broken cycles of consump-tion. Instead of dumping waste into landfills it is recycled and used for building processes such as insulating and growing crops.
GRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS
71
Spring 2009
Graphic Communication was an exploration into communicating message and design intent through drawing. The class consisted of intense sketches and culminated in a combined drawing of a building of our choosing.

PROFESSIONAL WORK
2001 M STREETThe repositioning of 2001 M Street took a tired 1980’s postmodern build-ing and turned it into a premier Class A building.
The project tore the ex-isting facade and half of the existing 8 floors down and replaced it with a new curtain wall and two new floors. The lobby was also redone to match the new facade.
I was heavily involved in the helping prepare the con-struction set for bid and permit and assisted with the re-design of the lobby after the project was taken off hold after the reces-sion.

The following represents a selection of projects completed while working for various firms in DC and across the country.
RUNWAYRunway is an incubator company providing space to some of the nation’s best start-up companies. Located in downtown San Francisco in the same build-ing as Twitter, the open plan allows for both collab-oration while also provid-ing small breakout spaces for private work.
The space is 20,000 SF of custom tenant-fit out. I was responsible for the docu-mentation of the design and the assembly of the permit set.

MFAThe Managed Funds As-sociation is the national representation of the hedge fund industry in the Nation’s Captial. Their headquarters had to at once convey status while not being overly gaudy.
The client found a partially built our space which suit-ed their needs but needed significant upgrades to ac-commodate their full range of functions. While offices were left intact, the en-trance, conference center and common spaces were completely new.
I was on the project from concept development until issuing for permit and was responsible for the construction documents as well as assisting in as-sembling and presenting design reviews with the client.
