Frederick Douglass Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey was

born into slavery February 1818 in Tuckahoe, Maryland.

Frederick was a run away slave

He was a Civil Rights Activist

Fredrick Augustus Washington Bailey At age 8, he was sent to Baltimore to work

for one of his master’s relative. There, helped by the wife of his new master, he began to educate himself.

He later worked in a shipyard, where he caulked ships.

In 1838 he fled from his master and went to New Bedford, Massachusetts.

To avoid capture, he dropped his two middle names and changed his name to Douglass.

Douglass Accomplishments In 1841 Massachusetts Antislavery

Society hired him to lecture about his experiences as a slave.

In 1845 Douglass published his autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. He feared that his identity would be revealed as a runaway slave he went to England.

In 1847 he returned back to US and founded an antislavery newspaper.

In 1855 he wrote My Bondage and My Freedom

Douglass as a Civil Rights Activist Douglass home was station on the Underground

Railroad System that helped runaway slaves reach freedom.

He help recruit African Americans for the Union Army during the American Civil War (1861 – 1865)

He was the first African American nominated for vice president of the U.S. 1872

He served as recorder of deeds in District Columbia (1881 – 1886)

He also served as U.S. minister to Haiti (1889- 1891)
