The State University of New York at Fredonia’s mission is to ensure all students will be skilled, connected, creative, and responsible global citizens. That mission is supported by a caring community of people who share the commitment that all students have the opportunities and support to succeed.

That mission cannot be fulfilled without the generosity of people like you, our donors and benefactors. Many of you have walked the same hallways as our current students and remember the impact faculty, staff, and administrators had on your Fredonia experience.

Your generosity has continued to grow the foundation’s endowment, which experienced a 5.3 percent increase last year. Strategic investments of your gifts mean increased opportunities to help students achieve a degree that may have been otherwise out of reach.

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRSince 1964, the Fredonia College Foundation has promoted,

advanced, and supported the students, activities, and programs at the State University of New York at Fredonia. But never has there been more excitement about what the future holds than now, as we continue the largest comprehensive campaign in foundation history.

The $20 million “Nurturing Innovation: The Campaign for Fredonia” effort will support vital initiatives to create the perfect blend for students, mixing well-rounded knowledge with practical career preparation. The public phase, launched in the fall of 2017, is active and engaging, and I invite you to learn more about the campaign and to be inspired by our students’ stories by going to our campaign website at www.fredonia.edu/nurture.

The campaign will continue to increase our endowment, which continues its steady growth. The endowment market value stands at $32.3 million, a 5.3 percent increase over last year. We proudly offer 467 endowments through the foundation. I’m pleased to tell you Fredonia delivered over $958,000 in scholarship awards to worthy students in 2016-17.

In 2017, the Fredonia College Foundation welcomed four new board members. They include Julia (Gavin) Butchko, ‘93, vice president, Medicines Development Unit, Eli Lilly and Company; James Foley, ‘79, former U.S. Ambassador to Croatia and Haiti; Debra Horn Stachura, ‘75, co-owner, Buffalo Advertising Management (Ms. Stachura is a previous board chair of the Fredonia College Foundation), and Susan M. Uszacki-Rak, co-owner, Double A Vineyards in Fredonia (Ms. Uszacki-Rak’s son, Adam Rak, is a 2007 Fredonia graduate). All four offer diverse perspectives that will develop and expand the board’s strategic vision.

Kelsey Lowery always wanted to work with animals in a zoo, and the State University of New York at Fredonia put her on a direct path to achieve that career goal.

In fact, the 2017 graduate was already hired by the Buffalo Zoo as its hoofstock apprentice before receiving her Biology degree in May.

“Working with animals in a zoo setting or in the wild involving conservation efforts is something I’ve always been interested in,” Kelsey said.

Courses such as Animal Communications and Animal Behavior helped to prepare Kelsey for the position and what to expect. So did three internships, one at the Utica Zoo and two at the Buffalo Zoo, all arranged by Fredonia’s Career Development Office. The internships gave her experience as an animal keeper and a zoo keeper. Kelsey was able to pay for her living expenses while at her Utica intern-

ship thanks to the Judy Elwinger Scholarship established through the Fredonia College Foundation that she was awarded through the Career Development Office.

“I had a lot of experience knowing what the days were like, so I felt very prepared coming into the job,” she said.

At the Buffalo Zoo, Kelsey is responsible for the care of five addax, one roan antelope, two zebra, nine Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, four reindeer, two gemsbok and three American bison. Daily chores begin at 7:30 a.m. and include checking overall animal health, feed-ing, and maintenance of barns and outside exhibit areas.

“It’s very exciting; every day there’s something new going on,” Kelsey said. “There are a lot of responsibilities that I’ve assumed in roles. I’ve learned a lot of new skills since I graduated (from Fredonia) and I’ve met a lot of amazing people.”

Just a couple months after being hired, Kelsey was promoted to keeper, with additional duties that include shifting the animals in their barn stalls as well as into and out of their exhibits. She’s also responsible for writing keeper’s reports on the animals at the end of each day. Anything involving their health or any enrichment they receive that day is reported.

“I love being an advocate for the animals here and supporting the conservation of all these animals, so it’s something that I see myself being in for a long time,” Kelsey said.

Those key features attracted John Renyhart to the State University of New York at Fredonia. There was no tuition in 1960 at the college,

then largely dedicated to training future teachers, and John was a graduate of nearby Cassadaga Valley Central School. John’s parents were not able to finance his college education, so Fredonia was a practical choice.

“Being the first in my family to pursue a college ed-ucation, I was determined to succeed,” he remembers. John credits a high school guidance counselor “who believed enough in me to go the extra mile” to get him accepted at Fredonia.

The only real college expenses incurred by John, who commuted from his home in Lily Dale three of his four years, were for books and the student activity fee. When tuition was imposed in 1962, John qualified for a scholar incentive award, so tuition was waived. Another bonus at Fredonia was meeting his future wife, Nancy Weber, who grew up in Long Island, at a Sadie Hawkins Dance at the College Lodge.

To show gratitude for their education, John and Nancy are committed to help cushioning the finan-cial burden for students at Fredonia. Now retired and living in Florida, the Renyharts established a fund with the Fredonia College Foundation in 2010, in the Doors

to Opportunity Pooled Fund, to create the Renyhart Family Scholarship so Cassadaga Valley students can have the same opportunity at Fredonia that John had nearly 60 years ago.

With the Renyhart Family Scholarship now fully en-dowed, the first academic award will be presented this fall, and every year thereafter, to a Cassadaga Valley student planning to enroll at Fredonia or a Cassadaga Valley graduate already attending Fredonia.

“We are happy to do our part in advancing educational opportunities for students contemplating Fredonia,” John said.

John and Nancy, who lived in Stony Brook for 25 years and raised two sons, are also adding a gener-ous “thank you” to their alma mater by supporting “Nurturing Innovation: The Campaign for Fredonia” — the most ambitious comprehensive campaign to date at the university.

REMEMBERING FREDONIAIn addition to annual giving, making a planned gift to Fredonia allows donors to assist the university in its growth and at the same time help to achieve personal goals. The following gift plans are just a few examples that offer tax savings and other advantages to donors.

Bequests: Leave Fredonia a percentage of your estate. Or, make a bequest of money or a particular piece of property.

Securities: Give stocks that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. If you have owned them longer than one year, you will pay no capital gains tax on the transaction, and you can deduct the full fair market value.

Retirement Plan Assets: Your most efficient estate planning option may be leaving all or a portion of your retirement plan to charity, because tax laws often subject these assets to the highest combined income and estate taxes upon death. Many techniques can be used to avoid combined tax rates of nearly 65 percent. At the same time, you can pass more tax-favored assets to your family.

Charitable Gift Annuity: This is a simple contract between you and Fredonia that pays you a fixed dollar amount for your lifetime. The older you are, the higher your annuity rate. If you use

appreciated property to fund the gift annuity, you will escape the capital gains tax on the gift portion of the transaction. Plus, you are able to spread the remaining capital gains tax over your lifetime. You also receive a partial income tax deduction.

Real Estate: This is a simple donation if you own property that is not mortgaged, has appreciated in value, and you no longer need or use. You can deduct the fair market value of your gift and avoid all capital gains taxes. Plus, you have removed that asset from your taxable estate.

Life Insurance: Rather than cancel policies you no longer need, you could name Fredonia as the beneficiary, or simply donate the policies outright.

The four years that Bob Boerst spent at the State University of New York at Fredonia, a time “packed with many social changes,” pro-

vided the foundation that prepared the Jamestown, N.Y., native for a rewarding 35-year career in the hu-man resources field.

Bob helped students transition to college, as a resi-dent assistant at Igoe Hall during his junior year and at Schulz Hall in his senior year, as well as a first-year advi-sor and instructor of personnel and guidance for three years at Miami University of Ohio, where he earned a M.S. in Personnel Counseling after receiving his Fredonia degree in Psychology in 1972.

“I look still look back on my time at Fredonia as a great foundation for my career and work experience,” Bob says. He hadn’t declared a major as a first-year student, but really enjoyed psychology courses.

Several faculty in the Department of Psychology, in-cluding his advisor, Dr. David Hess, had a favorable im-pression on him. “I also got to know Dean Harold Hopkins in Student Affairs, who was always there to listen to me and discuss the challenges of helping students adjust to college life. He was instrumental in me deciding to go on to graduate school in personnel counseling.”

A desire for “real world” business management experi-ence led Bob to executive positions at several multi-na-tional companies, including fast-food chains and the Marriott Corp. — where he rose to director of human resources for its Health Care Services division that pro-vided management services at food service operations in hospitals and health care facilities across the country.

Bob ultimately returned to academia, this time in the “for profit” community, as human resources director for the Northwest Division of DeVry University.

Now retired and living with his wife, Jill, in Florida, Bob’s says he’s “proud to be a Fredonia grad” and continues to assist students at his alma mater by making annual donations to the Fredonia College Foundation. His is an unrestricted gift, so the university has the ability to ap-ply the money to address immediate priorities — from day-to-day operations to sudden emergencies to rare opportunities.

“Colleges have been hit with many budget challenges over the years,” Bob says. “I trust that people who are in those upper level positions are much better qualified to decide where my donation can do the most good.”

Jenn Michalek, director of Annual Giving and asso-ciate director of Development in the Fredonia College Foundation, says unrestricted gifts make a difference as they allow Fredonia the flexibility to meet emerging needs of the campus and students.

Bob returns to the campus when visiting siblings still living in Jamestown. “Unfortunately, most of the faculty and staff that I knew are gone now. However, what great memories!”

The second-largest class of incoming students at the State University of New York at Fredonia, 1,164, settled into campus in Fall 2017, marking the first time since the 2014-2015 academic year that the campus enrolled over 1,000 first-year students. The entering class was nearly 25 percent larger than the previous year’s corresponding class of 934 students, and it easily surpassed — by more than 16 percent — the university’s goal for 2017-2018. The class was also the most ethnically diverse ever, with minority students accounting for nearly one out of every three students. –>

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL ACCOLADES

<– The women’s volleyball team finished an outstanding 2017 season with a 22-10 record and fell one match short of the SUNYAC title and an NCAA berth. Three seniors — Courtney Poirier (West Seneca/West Seneca West), Hallie Christopher (East Amherst/Clarence) and Kristen Stanek (Hamburg/Orchard Park) — were named to the All-SUNYAC team, along with junior Kailey Falk (York, N.Y./Our Lady of Mercy). Poirier shared the league’s Defensive Player of the Year honor with two other players. Head Coach Geoff Braun was recognized as SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time and also reached the 400-win plateau in his 19th season at the helm.

We will be remembered for the lives we change and the causes we support. The best way to have that influence is in creating an endowment to support future generations of Fredonians. You have several choices in creating an endowment:

u Named Endowment — you can establish a named endow-ment with an outright gift of $10,000 or more. A named en-dowment is immediately featured in Fredonia publications and on the Fredonia website at fredonia.edu/giving. The first award is made four quarters after the initial gift. Ongoing fo-cused assistance continues according to your wishes through the Memorandum of Agreement.

u Building Towards Endowment — these begin with an initial $2,000 gift, with a six-year time frame provided to reach the fully endowed level of $10,000.

u Doors to Opportunity Pooled Fund — this option provides the opportunity for more than one person to build a single en-dowment. It begins with a gift of $1,000. Contributing donors will be acknowledged through the use of their name or the name of the account they are building. If the contributions to the fund reach the endowment level, the funds may be moved to a traditional Named Endowment.

With endowed funds, the principal remains invested and a por-tion of the income earned from the investment is used to finance scholarships, academic programming, or other institutional priorities.

Endowed funds may carry the donor’s name, represent an area of interest in the title, or be named in honor of or in memory of a person or organization. Endowments may serve any area on campus and are often used to fund scholarships, to meet the priority needs of an academic department, or to provide enriched learning opportunities for students.

<– The Greg & Linda (Ferry) Prechtl Office Suite in Dods Hall was dedicated during Homecoming 2017 festivities in honor of the longtime athletic director and former head men’s basketball coach and his wife. The Prechtl Suite includes the Department of Athletics and Recreation and Mr. Prechtl’s former office. Both honorees are Fredonia graduates; he served the university for 44 years, and she is a retired elementary school teacher and longtime supporter of Blue Devil athletics. The couple established an endowment to benefit Fredonia athletics and its teams.

<– Zuill Bailey, widely considered one of the premier cellists in the world, was in-residence at the School of Music, where he performed with the Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra and conducted a master class, in March 2018. Four seniors — Greg Stebbins, Alex Cousins, Brian Cordova and Allen Maracle — participated in the master class. The Bailey residency, made possible by a grant from the Williams Visiting Professor Fund of the Fredonia College Foundation, could be considered the highlight of a current student’s music education at Fredonia.

<– Guest alumni operatic artists who have graced the stages of the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, New York City Opera and Minnesota Opera and boast international operatic reputations returned to campus in October 2017 for a celebration concert to mark the 60th anniversary of the Hillman Opera. Also spotlighted were current students in a chorus of 120 as well as in featured roles. Famous arias and operatic scenes from “La Bohème,” “La Traviata,” “Die Fledermaus,” “Carmen” and many others, were part of the special program. The Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge, performed with the guest artists.

<– Student entrepreneurs Alex Czechowski and Nate Winn won “Best All Around Pitch” honors for NexNest — a web application they developed that connects students with local landlords and offers other services to help make student renting a positive experience — in the student business plan competition at the WNY Student 2 Biz Challenge held in April 2018 at Hilbert College. Included with their win was $1,500 to invest in their company, along with the honor of having the traveling WNY Student 2 Biz Challenge trophy displayed at Fredonia for the coming year.

<– Family members, colleagues, administrator and friends gathered to dedicate El Nasser Way, a sidewalk between Fenton Hall and Central Avenue, in memory of Professor Emeritus Marwan El Nasser. He served nearly 50 years on the faculty of the Department of Economics until his passing in December 2017. Dr. El Nasser used the walkway every day on his way to campus. The Dr. Marwan El Nasser Scholarship was also created through the Fredonia College Foundation to support an incoming community college transfer student.

“Thunder Cloud,” a 1,500-pound cast iron sculpture by Coral Lambert, was installed in the Dennis R., ’72 and Kathryn L. Costello South Plaza, adjacent to the Rockefeller Arts Center Studio Complex. The 8-by-9 foot sculpture, which depicts the artist’s attempt to capture the transience and awe of nature, is part of the In Sight/On Site outdoor sculpture program initiated by the Department of Visual Arts and New Media. The program serves to expose the campus and community to developments and directions within contemporary sculpture, to foster an appreciation for art as an integral concern within public space. –>

<– Dr. Amer Ahmed, an acclaimed scholar who studies Islamic culture and has earned praise for his ability to facilitate honest, authentic dialogue that replaces fear and stereotypes with facts and understanding, delivered the Maytum Convocation keynote address, “Islam: Beyond the Myths, Breaking Down the Barriers,” in September 2017 in King Concert Hall. The goal of Dr. Ahmed’s talk, framed within the 2017-2018 Convocation theme “Transformations,” was to increase knowledge of Islam and provide needed context to bridge divides. He was also a Williams Visiting Professor.

<– Students, staff and community members logged just over 2.8 million yards — one lap at a time — inside Steele Hall in support of the “Around the World for Yeardley” Awareness Walk, whose mission is to call attention to dating and domestic violence not only on college campuses, but across the country. The tally exceeded Fredonia’s goal of two million yards. The initiative, held in April 2018, served as a tribute to Yeardley Love, a former University of Virginia women’s lacrosse player, who was murdered by her boyfriend in 2010. Student-athletes from Fredonia and St. John Fisher join in the observance.

<– The Tony Award-winning Broadway hit “Peter and the Starcatcher,” a major hit of the 2012 Broadway season, opened the 2017-18 Walter Gloor Mainstage Series in Marvel Theatre. More than 60 cast members that included first-year students, sophomore, juniors and seniors in the Department of Theatre and Dance were involved in the production. We have audited the accompanying financial statements of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc., (a nonprofit organization) which comprise the statements of financial position as of December 31, 2017 and 2016, and the related statements of activities and cash flows for the years then ended, and the related notes to the financial statements.

Management’s Responsibility for the Financial Statements Management is responsible for the preparation and fair presentation of these financial statements in accordance with accounting policies generally accepted in the United States of America; this includes the design, implementation, and maintenance of internal control relevant to the preparation and fair presentation of financial statements that are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.

Auditors’ Responsibility Our responsibility is to express an opinion on these financial statements based on our audits. We conducted our audits in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. Those standards require that we plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial statements are free from material misstatement.An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial statements. The procedures selected depend on the auditors’ judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial statements, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditors consider internal control relevant to the entity’s preparation and fair presentation of the financial statements in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. Accordingly, we express no such opinion. An audit includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of significant accounting estimates made by management, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial statements.We believe that the audit evidence we have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for our audit opinion.

Opinion In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Fredonia College Foundation of the State University of New York, Inc. as of December 31, 2017 and 2016, and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the years then ended in conformity with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America.

Report on Supplementary InformationOur audits were conducted for the purpose of forming an opinion on the financial statements as a whole. The schedules of administrative and Franklin Properties, LLC expenses for the years ended December 31, 2017 and 2016, on page 18 are presented for purposes of additional analysis and are not a required part of the financial statements. Such information is the responsibility of management and was derived from and relates directly to the underlying accounting and other records used to prepare the financial statements. The information has been subjected to the auditing procedures applied in the audits of the financial statements and certain additional procedures, including comparing and reconciling such information directly to the underlying accounting and other records used to prepare the financial statements or the financial statements themselves, and other additional procedures in accordance with auditing standards generally accepted in the United States of America. In our opinion, the information is fairly stated in all material respects in relation to the financial statements as a whole.
