Clearing a Sink Clog

Q: Some time ago, you mentioned that

a clogged sink can be cleared using a plumber’s snake. Where can I find one, and how do I use it? — Jerrold in West Virginia

A: A plumber’s snake is a tool that has a flex-

ible steel cable extending from a spool and hand-crank assembly, with a wire snarl on the far end. You’ll some-times see it referred to as a cable auger, but if you refer to it as the former, experi-enced people will under-stand. It can be purchased at any home-improvement store for around $25.

The salesperson might ask what you’re using the tool for. There are longer cables, up to 100 feet, as well as versions like closet augers (which are specifically for toilet clogs) and power augers (which are rented by the day, and something I wouldn’t recommend for a first-timer or a small clog).

To clear a sink clog, you should try a couple of other tricks before shelling out money for the plumber’s snake. First try a plunger, making sure the bell com-pletely covers the drain and touches the sink surface in order to create a vacuum. Plunge up and down about 15 times. If the sink drains, run hot water through the pipe to clear the remaining clog.

If plunging doesn’t work, try to clear the clog through the sink trap (at the bot-tom of the U-shaped drain

pipe under the sink). Put a bucket under the trap and put on rubber gloves. Using an adjustable pipe wrench, unscrew the plug at the bottom of the trap. Water and gunk will start draining immediately, but that doesn’t mean the clog is cleared. Use a wire coat hanger or something simi-lar to probe the pipe via the trap, and try to pull out any additional material. Then screw the plug back in and turn on hot water.

If the clog still isn’t cleared, now it’s time to try to plumber’s snake. Unscrew the plug at the bot-tom of the trap again and thread the end of the snake cable into the pipe, toward the wall, as far as it will go. To navigate pipe bends, turn the handle to adjust the cable end. Once the cable is extended as far as it will go, or won’t go in any farther, slowly wind it back out.

Clog material that the snake pushed through will likely be tangled up in the wire snarl at the front of the cable. Be sure to clean this off before storing the tool.

Now, close up the drain plug, turn on the hot water, and let it run for a couple of minutes to clear out the rest of the clog.

If this still doesn’t do the trick, contact a professional plumber.

BustedLast year five men were

arrested for selling, conspir-ing to sell and/or distribut-ing drugs at the VA Medical Center in Bedford, Mass. There were numerous agen-cies involved at the local and federal levels, plus the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General. The investigation took seven months.

Let’s look at the players. I’ll call them by initials only.

—J sold buprenorphine to an undercover federal agent, and conspired with R to sell oxycodone to an undercover federal agent.

—R conspired with J to sell oxycodone to an under-cover federal agent

—D distributed controlled substances, including her-oin, oxycodone, buprenor-phine and clonazepam and conspired to distribute those substances.

—It was the same for H and P.

Just for clarification, buprenorphine is used to treat opioid addiction and clonazepam is for seizure and panic disorders. Oxy-codone is for serious long-term pain. We’re not talking

aspirin here. All of these drugs can be abused and cause addiction.

Just how bad is this? J, R and D could have gotten up to 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine. H could have gotten 10 years in pris-on and a $500,000 fine. P could have gotten five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

So, what punishments did they get?

J was sentenced to 15 months in prison.

R was sentenced to five years of probation.

D and H were sentenced to three years of probation.

P was sentenced to two years of probation.

No, it doesn’t matter that these men were veterans. What matters is that they were selling at a VA hospital with a drug rehab program, where other veterans go to get well. In some cases, they were selling the very drugs they’d been provided by the VA.

Where in the sentences they received is there any incentive not to do it again?

ASK PSYCHIC; MEDIUM; ASTROLOGER

I have daughters ( with children ) who are each struggling with relationships. Please share any insight? Please include spiritual guidance for myself?

As I come into this question- I am impressed to share with you this is a complex question and not a single question. I am also impressed by your spirit teachers and guides ( as well as those spirit teachers and guides for each of your daughters and their children )- a need from your behalf to “back off” a little and to allow them to live their life their way. Happiness comes from within; each of us as spirits having a human experience have our own agendas and “what that which we each consider our own personal happiness to be.” We all come back to the earth plane in order to “create” and/or “to allow our spirits to learn lessons our own spirit has personally chosen.” I am hearing the following to share with you- we each only need to hear something once. Your guides and teachers are relaying this is pertinent for you regarding each of your daughters. By saying something more than once ( over and over )- we only act as a catalyst for others “ to often times do exactly what we desire them not to do.” Your spirit teachers and guides are also relaying to you- there is a need here to consider to allow your self to utilize tough love in order for you and your daughters to learn each of your own lessons and to create the dreams and happiness each of you desires. They go on to relay- as in the past- when you chose not to listen to your parents/elders/authority figures- there were times when you fell on your face- from this process you learned and no longer required falling on your face with this particular lesson. Please consider allowing your children and their children to learn their chosen lessons; to do it their way; to obtain their own growth; and to create a life which equates to happiness for them. Your teachers and guides ask of you to allow yourself to do the same for you. Your spirit guides and teachers go on to relay you may not agree with any or all of this- at the same time- if you ask your daughters ( individually and together ) they will agree with this imparted wisdom from all of those who love you from the other side ( and all of those from the other side you chose via free will to be within these roles in this life time ). I am also hearing one of your daughters is an older soul and has attempted to impart his wisdom to you; often times people have responded to her by saying, “children are to be seen and not heard.” You also have grandchildren with older spirits who are very much like this same daughter. God gave each and everyone of us free will; your spirit guides and teachers impart this same wisdom with you. They ask you to allow your self to create a life- the life- which is your life- by living your life for you within a state of full aliveness- which will create contentment and a multitude of spurts of happiness for you.

You may write your questions to Dennis for consideration to: or go to his Web Site

FUN FACTS ABOUT

FAST FOODWendy’s Restaurants are credited with creating the first modern-day drive-thru window, an innovation which they introduced at the grand-opening of their second store in November, 1970.

McDonald’s Restaurants first introduced the Big Mac systemwide in 1968. (The Big Mac had been introduced slightly earlier in a few stores in Pittsburgh.) It was followed by the Egg McMuffin (1973) and the Happy Meal (1979). Ronald McDonald had been introduced in 1963, several years prior to the Big Mac.

Colonel Harland Sanders first introduced the world to the taste of his Original Recipe Kentucky Fried Chicken in 1939. Featuring a secret blend of 11 herbs and spices, news of the Colonel’s tasty chicken spread quickly, and by 1964 he had opened more than 600 Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants. Today, security precautions protecting the Colonel’s secret recipe would make even James Bond proud. It is locked away in a safe in Louisville, Kentucky, and only a handful of people have ever been allowed to view the recipe.

French fries are the single most popular fast food in America. In 1970, french fries surpassed regular potato sales in the United States. In 2004, Americans ate 7.5 billion pounds of frozen french fries.

A&W Root Beer is named after Roy Allen and Frank Wright, the founders of the company. Allen bought the recipe from a pharmacist who had perfected it for making root beer. A&W was one of the first fast food franchises.

Today, Coca-Cola and PepsiCo products are sold in every country in the world, except North Korea.

In 1949, Forrest Raffel and his younger brother Leroy created a restaurant that sold roast beef sandwiches. They spelled out the initials “Raffel Brothers (RB) to create the name “Arby’s.”

Give “Heart” Coupons on

Valentine’s DayWho isn’t coupon crazy

these days? If you want to save $1 off your next box of breakfast cereal, there’s a coupon for that. If you want a two-for-one bonus meal at a local piz-zeria, there’s a coupon for that. But what about deals for more family time, like snowboarding with Uncle Pete, or baking a cherry pie with grandma Kate for President’s Day? There are coupons for that too, when you make “Fun with a Heart” coupon col-lections. Give them this Valentine’s Day and dis-cover how a simple idea can spread love and lovely times together for days and weeks to come.

Adults can make a packet of “Fun with a Heart” cou-pons for their kids, grand-kids, nieces and nephews. Add a snappy, eye-catching Valentine-themed cover to the packet, staple it togeth-er and it’s ready to give. Or, simply tuck a coupon or two in a Valentine card. They can be redeemed for a day at the zoo, an afternoon at a baseball game and a breakfast, making Grand-pa’s famous flapjacks.

Kids like to make them, too. They might want to come up with five ideas for things they can do for the person receiving the Valentine, like running an errand, babysitting a sib-ling, singing a song and giving a neck rub. They also might give the gift of time, such as, “This cou-pon is worth 10 minutes of shooting hoops with Nata-lie when Dad comes home”

or “This coupon is worth one bike ride around the park with Caleb and Mom when the snow melts.”

Write each idea on a sep-arate piece of paper that is cut in the same shape as the cover. Add drawings or decorations, and for fun print “No expiration” date on the bottom.

Staple the coupons together at the top between two pieces of construc-tion paper or craft foam cut in a Valentine-themed shape. Or, simply tuck heart-shaped coupons in an empty Valentine candy box and tie with a ribbon.

Extra fun idea: If you have a sewing machine,

make “Tear off” cou-pons. Remove the thread and then run the machine 3/4 inch or so from the top edge. The needle will make a row of holes for perforation marks. Staple together the cou-pons above the holes. The recipient can rip out a cou-pon along the perforation marks to redeem it.

LET FREE FILE DO THE HARD WORK FOR YOUTaxes can be taxing. But, you don’t have to

be a tax expert to prepare your federal tax return. Using IRS Free File, you can prepare and e-file your federal taxes on brand-name software for free. The program is a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a group of about 15 private-sector tax software companies.

All Free File software companies use the latest encryption software. More than 36 million taxpayers used Free File safely and securely since 2003. Free File is not only safe and secure, but using Free File’s e-file option and direct deposit is the fastest way to get a refund.

Here are four tips about IRS Free File:1. To avoid any

charges for preparing or e-filing your federal tax return, you must access Free File through the http://irs.gov/ website. Once you choose a Free File company, you will be directed to their website to prepare, print and e-file your return.

2. Free File software’s question and answer format will help you find tax breaks, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit. The software selects the appropriate tax form and does the calculations for you.

3. People who make $57,000 or less, which includes most Americans, can use the Free File brand-name software. People who earn more can use Free File Fillable Forms, an electronic version of IRS paper forms.

4. Taxpayers who cannot complete their tax returns by the April 15 filing deadline can request a six-month extension. It’s free and easy. Remember, though, that this is an extension of time to file, not to pay. If you think you owe, complete the estimated payment section and submit your payment with your extension request to avoid penalties and interest.

Free File. It’s Fast. It’s Safe. It’s Free. For more information, visit http://irs.gov/freefile .

“...In the long history of the world, only a few

generations have been granted the role of defending

freedom in its hour of maximum danger.

I do not shrink from this responsibility -- I welcome it.

I do not believe that any of us would exchange places with any other people or any other generation.

The energy, the faith, the devotion which we bring to this endeavor will light our country and all who serve it.

And the glow from that fire can truly light the world. And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God’s work must truly be our own.”

—27—

HOLLYWOOD — On Sunday, Feb. 24, untold millions of movie fans around the world will tune into the annual Academy Awards. Every year the current nominees and stars appear onstage to receive and present awards. But, what about the past winners and nominees who don’t go to the actual red car-pet event? Where do they watch Hollywood’s biggest night? For 23 years, the “in” crowd has attended a $1,000 a plate Oscar view-ing party, held this year at the swank Beverly Hills Hotel and hosted by music agent Norby Walters.

Expected to attend this year’s party are past win-ners Shirley Jones (“Elmer Gantry,” 1960), Maximil-ian Schell, (“Judgment at Nuremberg,” 1961), George Chakiris (“West Side Story,” 1961), Richard Dreyfuss (“The Goodbye Girl,” 1977), Martin Lan-dau (“Ed Wood,” 1994) and Jamie Foxx (“Ray,” 2004). Past nominees include Shirley Knight (“Dark at the Top of the Stairs,” 1960, and “Sweet Bird of Youth,” 1962), three-time nominee Diane Ladd (“Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” 1974, “Wild at Heart,” 1990, and “Rambling Rose,” 1991).

Also expected are Rip

Torn (“Cross Creek,” 1983), Sally Kirkland (“Anna,” 1987), Danny Aiello (“Do the Right Thing,” 1990), Bruce Davison (“Long-time Companion,” 1991), Robert Forster (“Jackie Brown,” 1997) and Peter

Fonda (“Ulee’s Gold” 1997). They will mingle and mix with the likes of Toni Braxton, “Twilight’s” Peter Facinelli, Ed Asner, Kevin Dillon, John Sch-neider and the perfect “10” herself, Bo Derek, to name just some of the 100 stars. If you’re not at the Oscars, it’ll be THE place to be!

***It looks like Sony Pictures

is considering throwing in the towel and getting out of the movie business. It has

sold its U.S. headquarters building in New York City for $1.1 billion to “strength-en its financial foundation and business competiveness for future growth,” and is denying it’s looking for a buyer for the movie division, which includes the studio in Culver City (which was formerly Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer) and the vast Colum-bia Pictures library of films and TV series. Meanwhile, Blockbuster is closing another 300 stores, leaving just 500 stores nationwide. Some 3,000 employees will be affected.

***While Universal/NBC

recently announced it was cutting jobs, prompting Jay Leno to take a pay cut in order to keep his full staff, Disney/ABC announced it was giving its chair-man-CEO Robert Iger a 20 percent pay raise. With the acquisition of George Lucas’ “Star Wars” fran-chise, “The Muppets” and just about anything animat-ed, and the success of “The Avengers,” the No. 3 box-office grosser of all time at more than $1.5 billion, it’s not surprising the Disney board gave Iger a whopping $40.2 million paycheck this year. So much for the fiscal debt!

The platypus is one of only five mammals that lay eggs (the others are all species of echidnas, which look like a halfway between anteaters and hedgehogs). It is also one of the few venomous mammals - the male platypus has a spine on its back foot.

There is no official plural of platypus in English - scientists variously use

“platypuses” or “platypus”. “Platypi” is often used conversationally, but this

is pseudo-Latin - the Greek would actually be “platypodes”.

IRS ORIGINThe roots of IRS go

back to the Civil War when President Lincoln and Congress, in 1862, created the position of commissioner of Internal Revenue and enacted an income tax to pay war expenses. The income tax was repealed 10 years later. Congress revived the income tax in 1894, but the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional the following year.

In 1913, Wyoming ratified the 16th Amendment, providing the three-quarter majority of states necessary to amend the Constitution. The 16th Amendment gave Congress the authority to enact an income tax. That same year, the first Form 1040 appeared after Congress levied a 1 percent tax on net personal incomes above $3,000 with a 6 percent surtax on incomes of more than $500,000.

In 1918, during World War I, the top rate of the income tax rose to 77 percent to help finance the war effort. It dropped sharply in the post-war years, down to 24 percent in 1929, and rose again during the Depression. During World War II, Congress introduced payroll withholding and quarterly tax payments.

YOU TOO CAN BE A GENIUS

The secret of good declar-er play lies in the ability to determine how the unseen cards are divided. If you could see all four hands, you’d almost always achieve the best possible result.

The knack of placing the opponents’ cards is available to anyone willing to analyze the clues and shape them into a composite picture that is consistent with the bidding and plays already made.

For example, consider declarer’s problem in today’s deal after West leads a club against five diamonds doubled. South ruffs and plays a trump to the ten, losing to East’s ace. Back comes another club, ruffed

by declarer. South then cash-es the king of trumps, bring-ing him to the crucial point of the play.

To make the contract, he must avoid losing two heart tricks. This can be accom-plished very easily, if West has the missing ace, by leading hearts twice toward dummy’s K-Q. But if East has the ace, this method of play is almost certain to fail, since a second heart trick must eventually be lost to the jack or ten.

The first thing South does at this point is to try to work out who has the ace. This is not a difficult task, since East could not sensibly dou-ble five clubs without the ace of hearts.

South therefore has only one real hope — that West has both the jack and ten of hearts. So at trick five, he leads a heart, and, instead of playing the king or queen, he finesses the nine. When the nine forces East’s ace, the contract is home.

The nine is clearly the right play — even though it requires a good bit of luck for it to succeed (the chance that West would have the jack and ten is about one in four). But once East is assumed to have the ace of hearts, South has no other choice but to rely on the deep finesse.

The Great Pearl Heist: London’s Greatest Thief and Scotland Yard’s Hunt for the World’s Most Valuable Necklaceby Molly Caldwell Crosby(Penguin Group, $25.95)Reviewed by Larry Cox

During the early 1900s, one of the most valuable necklaces on the planet was a strand of 61 pink pearls worth $18 million. At the time, it was worth even more than the Hope Diamond.

London-based jewelry trader Max Mayer pur-chased the pearls in hopes of selling them at auction for a profit. While in transit from Paris to Mayer’s office in London, the pearls vanished without a trace, becoming one of the most sensational thefts in the East End of London.

Bestselling author Molly Caldwell Crosby serves up a narrative with more twists, turns and fascinating char-acters than are found even in the best of novels. The story centers around two brilliant minds on opposite sides of the law, namely Inspector Alfred Ward of Scotland Yard and Joseph Grizzard,

the charming and brilliant leader of a gang of thieves in London. The Mayer Pearls proved too much of a temp-tation for Grizzard, who planned it as his last heist. The pink pearls would pro-vide financial security and establish him as London’s greatest thief.

The similarities of the two men are especially intrigu-ing. For example, Ward and Grizzard grew up in the same rough London neigh-borhood, and both were as brilliant as they were deter-mined. If it had not been for the tenacious investigator from Scotland Yard, it is likely that Grizzard would have gotten away with his crime.

Crosby has sifted through numerous archives to fully document this little-known event that pitted two men: one who carried out an almost flawless crime, and the other focused on finding the almost priceless neck-lace and arresting the thief who took it.

If you like true crime books, put “The Great Pearl Heist” at the top of your reading list.

Pepper and Egg Sandwiches

Add an instant taste of summer to savory winter dishes with a peck of bright peppers. When you can’t — or don’t have time to — grill them yourself, grab a 12-ounce jar off the pan-try shelf, drain well and chop, and try them in this quick recipe. 1 large sweet onion, chopped 8 large eggs Red peppers 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 4 ounces (1 cup) provolone cheese, shredded 4 (6-inch) hero rolls

1. Spray 12-inch nonstick skillet with nons

tick spray; then heat on medium 1 minute. Add onion and cook, covered, 10 minutes or until lightly browned, stirring occasion-ally.

2. Meanwhile, in bowl, whisk together eggs, salt and pepper. Add red pep-pers to onion in skillet. Pour eggs over vegetables; cover and cook 8 minutes or until almost set, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle with provolone cheese; cover and cook 2 minutes or until cheese melts.

3. Spoon egg mixture into hero rolls, split.

Pear and Ginger Crisp with Spiced Whipped CreamThis winter crisp was

inspired by a recipe for an apple-blueberry “grunt” from in an old Revolutionary War cookbook. Dr. Joseph D’Amore, a former chef and avid cookbook col-lector, changed it to pears and ginger, and now it’s his children’s favorite. 3 medium (1 1/4 pounds) pears 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 cup chopped pecans, walnuts, or almonds 3 tablespoons marga- rine or butter, melted

Spiced Whipped Cream: 1/2 cup heavy or whip- ping cream 2 teaspoons sugar 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger

1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Peel, core and cut pears into 1/2-inch-thick slices. In shallow 1 1/2-quart bak-ing dish, toss pears with lemon juice, 1 tablespoon brown sugar and 1 tea-spoon ground ginger; set aside.

2. In small bowl, stir flour, pecans, margarine or butter, and 1/4 cup packed brown sugar until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle flour mixture over pears. Bake pear mixture 30 minutes or until golden and bubbly.

3. Meanwhile, prepare Spiced Whipped Cream: In small bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat heavy or whipping cream, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger until stiff peaks form. Cover and refrigerate until ready to serve.

4. Serve crisp warm or cool on wire rack to serve later. To serve, spoon crisp into 4 dessert dishes. Top with Spiced Whipped Cream. Serves 4.

In 1818, Elijah Fay, a New Englander and a deacon of the Baptist church, planted the first grape vines in New York State west of the Hudson river. In 1830 he made 5 gallons of wine

from the Isabella and Catawba grapes he had planted. This was the start of

Chautauqua Counties vineyard industry, which still thrives today.

A Smile... costs nothing but gives much. It enriches those who

receive without making poorer those who give. It takes

but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts

forever. None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get

along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be

made rich by it. Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged,

borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value

to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too

tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none

needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

Written by Todd J. Tranum, President & CEO of the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce & Executive

Director of the Manufacturers Association of the Southern TierThe Business Council of New York State offers regional

briefings each year on the Executive Budget, and this year will be hosting a session in Chautauqua County.

The leading business organization in New York State, the Business Council represents the interests of large and small firms. Its membership includes thousands of companies, chambers of commerce, and professional and trade associations. The organization’s main function is to serve as an advocate for employers in the state political and policy-making arena, working for a healthier business climate, economic growth, and jobs.

The Business Council’s advocacy agenda for 2013 includes proactive initiatives intended to improve the state’s business climate and promote new private sector investment and job creation. Key topics being addressed are mandate relief, economic development, energy, health insurance, and more.

Ken Pokalsky, Vice President of Government Affairs for The Business Council, will provide an overview of the governor’s proposed budget and will outline legislative priorities for this year. Ken has served on a number of state advisory panels and is currently a member of the state’s Business Taxpayer Advisory Committee. He is also the Business Council’s liaison with Empire State Development Corporation and the Department of Taxation.

We encourage all of our members and local business people to attend this informative session, which will be held Friday, February 22 from 9:00-10:30 a.m. at Roberto’s, 2 East Second Street, Jamestown. Moving your farm & family forward

Our FarmNet worked with us to restructure our finances and implement a plan to

closely monitor our production costs. Thank you FarmNet!

“ “

I was confident about our financial situation on the

farm and started doing some pre-tax planning.

Our accountant suggested buying some crop inputs

for next year. After meeting with our supplier I was

shocked at the projected cost to produce milk and

I started worrying about cash flow.

My fertilizer supplier sensed my concern and

suggested I call FarmNet. A FarmNet financial

consultant came to my farm and helped me

restructure my finances and implement a plan to

more closely monitor my cost of production and

reduce my stress. They did this at no cost.

Serves 4.
