Canine hunting companionsare like your children

The day had a really miraculous start. For thefirst time in a long time, I had an entire day I couldspend anyway I chose. More unbelievable, theweather was perfect.

I was considering hitching up the boat andheading down to Truman Lake to try to catch somecrappie, when my ever faithful canine companionwandered into the room.

Grace instantly knew the “vibes” I was emit-ting had potential. She made sure I knew sheknew what I was up to by doing one of herpatented 360 degree spins.

So much for my original idea. Grace, unlikemany dogs, absolutely hates boats.

What could I do? Dogs had been part of fishingfor me since I was a toddler. There wasn’t anyvalid reason why today needed to be different.

That’s why when I pulled out of my driveway, the boat was still in its parking space and Gracewas seated in her accustomed place on the frontpassenger seat. As I recall, she had an oddlywolfish grin on her face.

I decided to visit a recently discovered stretchof one of my favorite small rivers. This time, I hadpredetermined we would try an access site thatwasn’t a rugged half-mile hike from the water.

Suiting action to thought, we were barely 100yards from the SUV when Grace demonstratedthat she’d found a place we could scramble downthe steep bank and — hopefully — stop sliding ona narrow but reasonably flat ledge at the water’sedge.

I looked over the edge, paused to ponder theidea that a dog should know best about where tofind catfish and made a near-perfect three-pointlanding a good six inches short of going “feetwet.”

I should pause to explain that I have an irre-sistible urge to grow figurative long legs wheneverI find myself on a river bank. It’s too bad I can’tgrow literal long legs as well, because the grassand stinging nettles were thigh deep.

Grace wants me to point out that those samegrasses and weeds towered two feet over the top ofher head.

The bottom line is we fished our way down-stream a river mile or so with the burlap bag I usefor a fish keeper growing heavier with almostevery stop.

Then we came to a stretch of river totallylacking in good fishing water. (Anyone whofishes the river knows what I mean.) I pressed onanother quarter-mile and called a halt.

It was then I noticed Grace wasn’t with me. Atfirst I wasn’t concerned. Our normal routine wasfor her to explore the immediate vicinity at willand then check in with me every 10 minutes or so.She never ventured out of earshot, so I called herin and sat down on my fishing bucket for what Iassumed would be a short wait.

Ten minutes later, I began to get concerned.Repeated calls got no response, but I thought Imight know why.

My voice echoed so much off the trees andthe river bank that I could barely tell where I wascalling from.

Blinded by the heavy cover as she was, it waspossible Grace had no idea where I was.

It wasn’t too long before I had no idea where Iwas either. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, but Ihad left the river to walk along a recently dried upwetland where the ground was nearly bare.

I now had only a general idea of where thewinding river was and a less hazy idea of how toget to the field edge of the timber.

I found my way out to the road less than half amile from the SUV, a decent enough performanceunder the circumstances.

I had hoped to find Grace waiting for me, butshe wasn’t.

I stowed my gear, changed into hiking shoesand began retracing our steps in the hope that she’dbe following our back trail, and we’d run into eachother. It was a wonderful plan; it just didn’t work.

By the time I reached the farthest point of ouroriginal trail, the pessimistic side of my nature wasfully in charge.

I assumed that plowing through the heavy grasshad overtaxed her 10-year-old heart and that minewas now a recovery mission.

I was determined to search for my furryfriend’s remains until dark, if need be.

About three hours later, as I was detouringaround a small pile of driftwood, I heard a plain-tive whine.

Frantic digging revealed that she’d crawledinto the heart of the pile and somehow run a stobunder her collar in such a way that she couldmove neither forward nor backward. Escapingon her own was impossible.

You can believe me when I say our post-rescuereunion was as lengthy as it was enthusiastic.

That was probably a good thing, because by thetime we got back to the SUV, both of us were hav-ing a tough time putting one foot in front of theother.

All’s well that end’s well, and Amber saysthat’s what I should concentrate on. She’s right, ofcourse.

That said, those among you who’ve been luckyenough to have been associated with exceptionaldogs will know exactly how I felt.

Grace is a dog, not a human being. I know that, but I also know that the feeling in the pit of mystomach felt a whole lot like the one I had whenmy son got lost for a couple of hours many yearsago.

The concession stand was vacant. The seatswere empty. The parking lot showed no signs of apacked house.Aside from the two out-of-townteams gearing up for an 11 a.m. showdown andthe Smith-Cotton coaching staff preparing DeyField for the full-day slate of Class 4, District 14games, Liberty Park Stadium was eerily quiet asthe 15-mile-per-hour winds intensified the brisk42-degree weather at 9:30 a.m. May 14.With the Smith-Cotton baseball team more

than five hours away from its 3 p.m. districtopener, there wasn’t a Tigers fan or parent insight. Even the Deys, who practically live at theballpark, were 20 minutes away from checking inBut there, amid the tranquil environment,

stood PaulArchibeque with one of the two vac-uum cleaners he donated to the team.Archibeque, the father of LukeArchibeque,

the starting second baseman for the Smith-Cottonjunior varsity baseball team, also serves as theTigers’ scoreboard official and announcer; he hadbeen at the park for more than a half-hour. He’dpulled out the grill, set up the sound system, gotthe scoreboard ready and cleared the entry ofloose debris and trash.“I have no assigned duties,”Archibeque said.

“It’s strictly whatever I want to do. Whatever Ican do to help, I’ll find a way to take care of it.”It’s a routine he’s grown accustomed to, just

like the routine he would execute hours later as heturned off the lights, locked up and let the coachesknow the stadium was good to close down.“Paul spends a lot of time here at nights,”

Smith-Cotton coach Jeff Mays said. “Not onlydoes he announce and keep the scoreboard, he’shere another hour or so after that cleaning up,picking stuff up, putting stuff away. So on gamedays, it adds up. He’s here anywhere from five toseven hours.”Why go to such lengths? Because, as

Archibeque puts it, “I just love this program.”The reasons are plentiful. He talks about how the late Ross Dey was a

father figure toAdam, his 21-year-old son whosuited up as a catcher and shortstop for the Tigersfor four years. He says that Bill andAlma Deyhave treated his 11-year-old daughter, Danyle, like one of their own grandchildren, lavishing herwith love and small presents from time to time.He also talks about the admiration he has for

Liberty Park Stadium and the current Smith-Cot-ton coaching crew, who make Sedalia a place op-posing teams love to visit.“This field is just gorgeous,” he said. “The

coaching staff does so much to this field ... andI’ve gotten a chance to talk to a lot of ballplayersfrom other schools, and they can’t wait to playhere. They just love the atmosphere and they justlove the field.”But not as much asArchibeque, who saw his

role expand with the team whenAdam was play-ing junior Legion ball. Like other volunteers, hestarted out small with the occasional field duty.“Like all the dads, I would help out where

they needed me, and watch the game from theside over there,”Archibeque said, pointing to thestands near the Tigers’ dugout. “But this one timethey needed a fill-in and I stepped in. Once I sat inthe chair (at the scorer’s desk behind home plate),it was kind of mine I guess. I’ve been doing itever since.”He’s done it despite juggling a hectic schedule

that includes taking classes at State Fair Commu-nity College and working part time at SedaliaFuel Mart. That work ethic was instilled in him in at an

early age through his military family background.Set to enter the nursing program in January

after two years at SFCC, Archibeque, a catcherin high school, turned down a scholarship toplay collegiate baseball and instead enlisted inthe United States Air Force, where he spent 11years working on F-16 aircraft at a base in LasVegas. After meeting his wife, Teresa, he moved to

Sedalia in 1991 to be near her family in KnobNoster and ever since, he’s fallen in love with theMidwest.“I love it here with the water, because I can fish,”Archibeque said. “It’s the longest I’ve ever livedin one place.”And while he’s here, he’ll continue to help the

Tigers along with the junior and senior Legionteams. The way he tells it, Mays can plan on morethan four years ofArchibeque as a volunteer.“I know a lot of parents that I joke around

with, they say that once their son’s done, they’redone,”Archibeque said. “I say to them, ‘No, youlove this sport too much. You’re gonna be back.’That doesn’t always hold true for a lot of them. But with me, I love the game and I love this pro-gram too much. I’m a lifer, I guess.”

Q: I read somewhere that my all-time favorite band, KISS, is back inthe studio working on a new album. Is that true? If so, when can we ex-pect some new material from them?-- Rodney G., via e-mailA: It's true: KISS is working on a

new studio album. The band beganrecording in April, and leadsinger/songwriter Paul Stanley told methat they expect to release the albumin late fall or early 2012, depending onhow things go. He said: "So far, itsounds phenomenal. It'll be worth thewait, I promise."In the meantime, Paul also is workingwith the House Research Institute tohelp bring awareness to teen hearingloss. Having been born deaf in one earas well as being a mega rock star, Paulknows all about protecting his hearing, and he wants to help spread the wordany way he can. "Hearing loss affectskids, it affects teens, and it affectsadults. I tell people, 'If you won't listento somebody in a white coat, maybeyou'll listen to somebody in blackleather.'" For more info on how you can protectyour hearing, go to earbud.org andsoundrules.org.

A Shepherd’s Confrontation“Who hath ears to hear, let him hear.”Matthew 13:9

Part 2 of 7 SeriesRacism, Hatred, Wars, Pharisees, AAbboorrttiioonn, Jobs, Social Services

Hatred - Are Christians preaching hatred? A popular Prophesy Evangelist from Texas is cur-rently preaching sermons consumed of hatred, murder and division. “Every kingdom di-vided against itself is brought to desolation.” Luke 11:17 He actually prayed for somethingbad to happen to the President on TV. Where does this hatred come from? “Whosoeverhateth his brother is a murderer; and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abidingin him.” 1John 3:15 Beware of Ministers who speak of “End of Days” matters as if theyare the only ones privileged to know God’s plans…this is the true definition of “arrogance.”“No one knows the date and hour when the end will be—not even the angels. No, nor evenGod’s Son. Only the Father knows.” (Jesus speaking.)Matthew 24:36 Yes, there are Signs, but until the last sign when…you will see him arrive in the clouds with power and greatglory….and the trumpet blast…24:30-31 I would be putting my efforts into controlling thehatred in my heart, as the heart is the center of the whole personality and is what is going tobe judged. Two possible Christian Republican 2012 Presidential Candidates recently chosemaking money instead of running for President after months of disparaging President Obama.Has God placed President Obama as our leader at this time to test us…to see what is reallyin our hearts? (Sounds JUST like something He would do.) Has your Minister spoken outagainst those nasty Liberals in his sermons lately? There is no war between Conservativesand Liberals …both have fallen (Romans 3:10.) Only Jesus is qualified to judge a heart andwill be doing so with lots of surprises. Luke 13:24-30.
