fresh travelled to Denmark tomeet up with Louise Graakjærone of Denmark’s hottest newfloral designers and owner ofAcacia in Skjern, Jutland. Wealso caught up with Joe Massie,Great Britain’s bright young starwhose busy floral life ispunctuated with success.

For sheer raw talent this pair offloral designers can’t be beaten,and they were delighted to bringtheir inspirational flair to thefresh bridal designs edition.

Louise knew exactly what she wanted whilststill at school – to be a florist. Coming from abackground of flower cultivation, hergrandfather was a flower grower, and then witha Saturday job in a flower shop whilst still atschool the die was already cast.

Working her way up from a Saturday girl gaveher the knowledge and experience onlystarting from the bottom and working upwardscan give you, couple this with her uniquepersonal talent and the drive to succeed, andno wonder after three years working at Acaciathe shop became hers.

Louise describes her style as fresh and simple,and there is an aesthetic, delicate quality toher bridal designs using space and minimalismto highlight the natural beauty of the flowers.It’s easy for Louise to combine her style ofdesign with commercial success, she is notafraid to persuade customers to try somethingdifferent. Memorable moments are many for Joe; he is RHSChelsea Flower Show Young Florist of the Year, herepresented Great Britain in the World Skills lastyear in Calgary where he came an impressivethird with only minuscule marks below first place.He also represented Great Britain in the Europeanyoung florists competition, Eurofleurs, in Slovenia,and again this year UK’s hopes will be on Joewhen Eurofleurs comes to the RHS Tatton Parkshow in July.

Joe has recently took up a creative designerposition at Springbank Flowers, Manchester, theprestigious event florist, where he can showcasehis designs on a grand scale. Wedding design iswhere Joe likes to push the boundaries, his styleis refined, slick and experimental, he is fearless inhis approach, and his world beating design skillsand saleability know-how means customersexpectations are always exceeded. Joe took up the fresh challenge of creating an economical yet stylishbouquet, creating a unique saleable design. This blooms on a budgetbouquet is stylish, modern and much of it can be assembled longbefore the wedding day, freeing up valuable time. The bouquet can bemade in any colour scheme and the amount of Bead and foliageembroidery will depend upon the budget.

What’s more it’s made entirely with long lasting Carnations, whichhave been out of fashion for far too long. Follow Joe’s instructions tomake this pistachio cornet bouquet.

Howtomake:

Step 1Remove all the MetallicWire, Bullion Wire andAluminum Wire from thereels and let it drop into alarge container on the floor,this helps to restrain thewire from covering the floorarea and getting dirty. Mixthe wires, and then scrunchthem together to form aneat cone shape. Ensurethe OASIS® WEDDING BELLE® Bouquet Holder will fit snuglyinto the cone shape. Neaten and support the shape by sewingthe wire together, particularly the edges, to produce a cleanprofessional finish.

Step 2Slot the bridal holder intothe cone shape and secureby sewing it in place firmlywith Aluminum Wire andfinish off the end of thecone with a Bead. Soak thefloral foam by carefullyholding the cone upsidedown and immersing onlythe floral foam into a bowlof water, and then drain offany excess water. Add theCarnations in closeformation starting with the outer ring and building a domedmass. Make sure the stems of the Carnations are cutdiagonally and inserted well into the floral foam for security.

Step 3Embellish one side of theCarnation dome with RoundHeaded Pearl Pins,Diamante Spray, Heucheraleaves, Hypericum berriesand entwined Ceropegiatrails to carry through thepistachio colours. Maketrails of Beads and FlowerPicks threaded onto BullionWire and attach to a centralplacement of flat leaves,add a scroll of apple greenFlat Aluminium Wire tofinish. Leave in a cool place until ready to deliver.

Trim down the steelgrass to approximately 8cm (3”) and fit into thecube. Do the same withthe Midelino Sticks mixingthe grass and bleachedwhite sticks to give aneven contrast of colours.

Step 2Fill the Mirror Cubestightly with grass andMidelino Sticks as thesewill keep the flower stemsin place. Trim the tops ofthe grass and MidelinoSticks to an even size, butensure they are stillapproximately 8cm (3”)above the container.

Step 3Add the Tulips first; keepingthem well above thecompact fringe of grass andMidelino Sticks, the stemsof the flowers are part of thedesign. Once the tulips arein place then add theMuscari, finishing with theEucharis. Fill the Glass TestTubes with water and insertthe heads of Cymbidium,and then tuck the tubesbetween the other flowersand foliage. Place thearrangements along thelength of the table.

Take a PEWAlthough most brides want to decorate the pew ends inchurch for their wedding, they never want to spend toomuch money on them.
