FRESHMAN PRESENTATION

2021-2022

Page 2: FRESHMAN PRESENTATION 2021-2022

Welcome to your first year in high school! Two years ago no one could have predicted that you

would be beginning your freshman year of high school in the middle of a global pandemic…..but

here we are.

All freshmen will be meeting with their school counselors to begin the relationship that will grow

over the next four years. In these face-to-face meetings, we will share important information that

we want you to have as soon as possible to assist you in making the very most of your high

school experience.

While high school graduation is certainly a goal we will be working on for the next four years, the

ultimate goal is for each student walking across the stage at graduation to have a plan in place

to help them achieve their dream of what they want to pursue after graduation.

Your school counseling department wants you to know that you need to keep your eye on the

prize. Whether your plan is to attend a 4 year university, a community (state) college, a

career/vocational school, go into the military, or enter the work force, we encourage you to use

these 4 years to make your plan become a reality.

Each year, school counselors will meet with you in small groups and individually to discuss plans,

lay out time lines, present options, etc.

It is important to review this presentation thoroughly. Your school counselor is available to you

in case you need any guidance, have any questions, need assistance, or want to discuss your

options. Please feel free to contact your counselor, via email or in person, to make this the best

freshman year it can be.

The School Counseling Department wants to keep you in

the loop with the latest news, scholarship info,

college/vocational visits, financial aid, Bright Futures

application deadlines, etc. The School Counseling

Department will be sending you a Weekly Reminder each

Friday to your email. Read it!

You can also follow us on Twitter and Instagram!

Each year we will provide you with a checklist of important items you need

to pay attention to for that particular year. Make sure to review your

FRESHMAN YEAR CHECKLIST carefully!! It can be found in your packet and

on our website.

Page 5: FRESHMAN PRESENTATION 2021-2022

Students must complete at least one online course

in order to earn the traditional 24 credit option

diploma. The online course may be either 0.5 credit

or 1.0 credit in value as long as it is the entire course

and this will satisfy the online course credit for

graduation.

Example:

Drivers’ Ed = 0.5 credit and satisfies the online

course credit requirement as long as the entire

course is successfully completed.

Guitar 1 = 1.0 credit and satisfies the online course

credit requirement as long as the entire course is

successfully completed.

While you have until the end of your senior year to

complete this requirement, we STRONGLY

recommend that you complete it as early as you

can. Summers are a great time to take an online

course.

Page 6: FRESHMAN PRESENTATION 2021-2022

You can print your community service hours log and then upload it with

the supporting materials under the School Counseling tab and then under

Community Service information. A total of 20 community service hours

are required for graduation. Bright Futures Scholarships require at least 75

or 100 hours for their scholarship requirements.

IMPORTANCE OF GRADES

Page 8: FRESHMAN PRESENTATION 2021-2022

GRADESFor Non-EOC Courses

Each semester is divided into 2 nine week grading periods and a semester

exam

Semester average = 1st 9 weeks (40%) + 2nd 9 weeks (40%) + semester exam

(20%)

½ credit is earned per class per semester

Cumulative GPA’s are recalculated at the end of each semester

For EOC Courses

• Algebra I, Geometry, Biology and US History are yearlong courses that are

only given a final grade and not a semester grade.

• Year average = 1st 9 weeks (15.4%) + 2nd 9 weeks (15.4%) + 1st semester exam

(8.4%) + 3rd 9 weeks (15.4%) + 4th 9 weeks (15.4%) + EOC (30%)

FRESHMEN GRADES MATTER!!!!!

Freshmen are beginning their high school transcript now!!!!!!

The number one comment we hear from seniors…..

“I wish I had done better in my freshman year”

Page 13: FRESHMAN PRESENTATION 2021-2022

Here are some helpful

hints for navigating your

SIS Portal. We often are

asked for an “unofficial”

transcript so you can

look at your history of

grades, courses, and

test scores. All of this is

available on your SIS

Portal….if you know

where to find it.

Start Building Your Resume!

As a freshman in high school, it is time for to you begin developing a resume. Resumes can be used for

job applications, to secure internships, scholarships and even to help complete college applications.

Your high school resume will likely be focused on relevant coursework, extracurricular activities like

sports, volunteering, clubs, and any jobs you may have over the course of your 4 years in high school.

the school day. You are permitted to attend 5 of these if you feel

that you can miss your class on the scheduled day and time. If

you want to see what college will be coming to PV, when they

will be coming, and register to attend their visit, CLICK HERE or go
