THOUGHT for the DAY:

If you’re looking for a psychic girlfriend, be careful...she might leave you before you meet.

JOKE of the WEEK: On the first day of school a new first grade teacher explained to her class that she was aGiants fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Giants fans. Wantingto impress their teacher, everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl. Theteacher looks at the girl with surprise, “Janie, why didn't you raise your hand?” “Because I'mnot a Giants fan,” she replied. The teacher, still shocked, asked, “Well, if you are not a Giantsfan, then who are you a fan of?” “I am a Dallas Cowboys fan, and proud of it!” Janie replied.

The teacher could not believe her ears. “Janie please tell us why you are a Cowboys fan?” “Because my mom is a Cowboysfan, and my dad is Cowboys fan, so I'm a Cowboys fan too!” “Well,” said the teacher in a obviously annoyed tone, “thatis no reason for you to be a Cowboys fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your momwas an idiot and your dad was a moron, what would you be then?” “Then,” Janie smiled, “I'd be a Giants fan.”

QUOTE for the DAY: “The best antidote for international fear is international understanding; the best way to cultivate internationalunderstanding is through business and social intercourse.” - Paul Harris, Tokyo 1928

STUFF YOU NEED TO KNOW Last week the Pilot promised to print more about the newly selected Rotary International President for 2019-2020. This is indeed “Stuff You Need To KNow.”

Mark Daniel Maloney, selected to be the new 2019-20 Rotary President, will be declared thepresident-nominee on 1 October if no challenging candidates have been suggested as weannounced last week. Mr. Maloney is a member of the Rotary Club of Decatur, Alabama, USA.

“The clubs are where Rotary happens,” says Maloney, an attorney. He aims to support andstrengthen clubs at the community level, preserve Rotary’s culture as a service-orientedmembership organization, and test new regional approaches for growth. “With the eradicationof polio, recognition for Rotary will be great and the opportunities will be many,” he says. “Wehave the potential to become the global powerhouse for doing good.” Maloney is a principalin the law firm of Blackburn, Maloney, and Schuppert LLC, with a focus on taxation, estate

planning, and agricultural law. He represents large farming operations in the Southeastern and MidwesternUnited States, and has chaired the American Bar Association’s Committee on Agriculture in the section oftaxation. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Alabama State Bar Association, and the Alabama LawInstitute.... He has been active in Decatur’s religious community, chairing his church’s finance council and a localCatholic school board. He has also served as president of the Community Foundation of Greater Decatur, chairof Morgan County Meals on Wheels, and director of the United Way of Morgan County and the Decatur-MorganCounty Chamber of Commerce. A Rotarian since 1980, Maloney has served as an RI director; trustee and vicechair of The Rotary Foundation; president’s aide; zone coordinator; and a leader on the Future Vision and 2014Sydney Convention Committees. He serves on the Operations Review Committee and has served on the RotaryPeace Centers Committee. He has received the Rotary Foundation Citation for Meritorious Service andDistinguished Service Award. Maloney and his wife, Gay, are Paul Harris Fellows, Major Donors, and BequestSociety members. Mark Daniel Maloney’s life and work through Rotary have truely made a difference.

USELESS FACT OF THE DAY:

No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver andpurple...(Except for “Nurple,” and everyone knows what a purple nurple is, right?...look it up!)

HOW ROTARIANS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE

So, how do Rotarians make a difference to start with? Instead of focusing on their identityas a businessman, doctor, engineer, teacher, accountant, professional or in any othervocation they follow, they are open to constructive collaboration by joining forces andforming a team of human beings who think that Service to Mankind is the superior formof living. They understand how social influences work and how to harness its power. Thiswas evident when, in our fight against polio, we harnessed the influence of the MuslimUlemas in India and made a huge difference in our campaign to eradicate polio.
