YEAR 11 TASTE OF SIXTH FORM
A GOLDEN TICKET TO RAINHILL SIXTH FORM DEAF FELLOWSHIP It was great to welcome our Golden ticket winners this week to an afternoon of Sign
Language in the Sixth Form study room.
Anne from the Deaf Fellowship came to lead this ever popular session, teaching the
students about deaf culture alongside basic sign language.
Students spent two hours learning to finger spell and how to count from 1-20,
alongside the importance of facial expressions in signing and short sentences to
introduce themselves and their family. Students were fully engaged throughout the
session and learnt a lot in a short space of time.
Miss Morrell, Key Stage 5 Learning Mentor.

INTERHOUSE HUMANITIES COMPETITION Quizzes were held across all three subjects at lunchtime on specific areas of
knowledge.
The History department had a quiz about “significant people”, “battles” and “castles”.
In Philosophy & Ethics, the focus was on “world religions” and “morality”. In Geography,
the “World Geography” quiz got students to name world currencies, flags, capitals
and identify obscure landmarks from around the world.
All three subject area quizzes were challenging and made students demonstrate
resilience and inference skills. What was impressive was how students had a strong
general knowledge that they applied to their answers. There was some fierce
competition too amongst students.
Well done to all those who took part to earn points for their house. The winners overall
were Sans Pareil who had an impressive turnout of 24 students across the subjects and
were highly competitive.
Overall points:
Sans Pareil - 850
Stephenson - 820
Rocket - 640
Perseverance - 190
Mrs Parkinson, Head of Humanities.
GEOGRAPHY CLUB Thursday lunchtimes in A205 for Year 7 and 8.
Year 7 and 8 pupils are invited to join Geography Club every
Thursday lunchtime to explore Geography in the wider-world.
We will look at Geography in the news, watch topical
documentaries and take part in competitions. Students will be able
to have their say in the topics that we cover and take ownership of
the Geography Club.
We look forward to seeing our young geographers there!
Mrs Parkinson, Head of Humanities.
WHAT SHOULD YOUR LOCAL HIGH STREET LOOK LIKE IN 2030? YEAR 10 PUPILS The Royal Town Planning Institute has launched a competition that we
would like Year 10 Rainhill geographers to be a part of! Students need
to use no more than 1000 words (as well as maps, images and drawings
to reimagine their local high street. Entries will then be judged by a
panel of professional town planners from across the North West, with a
1st prize of £250!
If any Year 10 geography students are interested in taking part then
please see your geography teacher to ask for further information.

ARTS ACADEMY NEWS This week, the Rainhill Sixth Form Centre Theatre Studies students spent the afternoon
at a bespoke backstage tour of the Everyman Theatre with the amazing Allan Williams.
This was followed by a professional acting workshop at Rainhill Sixth Form led by the
Everyman and finished with the students returning to the Everyman Theatre to watch
the highly creative and delightful performance of "FUP" by Kneehigh Theatre
Company.
This was part of the Sixth Form’s creative partnership with the Liverpool Everyman
Theatre, which will give our Sixth Form students numerous opportunities and
experiences to connect with the creative arts and theatre industry.
The Creative Industry is a growth sector and made the UK 92 billion pounds last year.
With these experiences and networking opportunities, our Sixth Form students will be
well placed to gain entry to the most prestigious universities and conservatoires to
continue their training.
Mrs Renison & Mrs Speers, Performing Arts Team.
MENTAL HEALTH DAY - WEDNESDAY 10TH OCTOBER On Wednesday 10th October, pupils had the opportunity to discuss current issues
around mental health in the UK and globally with reference to Mind.org and the
Samaritans website.
Pupils explored the A to Z of difficulties within mental health and issues around
the increasing numbers of suicide. Pupils were also informed of recent news on this
topic in terms of government funding and recognition and how the very first official
Suicide Officer was appointed.
All Forms investigated Mental Health by #Handsup which gave advice on how to look
out for others who may be struggling. Many support groups were listed to help those in
need of emotional support.
Pupils were advised to listen to others, not to judge and
to always show compassion.
Mrs Whitehead, Head of Life Skills.

OPERATION ENCOMPASS Dear Parent/Carer
I am writing to inform you of the school’s involvement in a long term Merseyside
project that runs jointly between local St. Helens schools and Merseyside Police, known
as Operation Encompass.
Operation Encompass is the reporting to schools, prior to the start of the next school
day, notifying them of when a child or young person has been exposed to, or involved
in, any domestic incident.
Operation Encompass Police work with a trained member of the school staff, known
as a Key Adult, sharing important information in order to help the school to support
affected children in their care. It is then the school’s responsibility to offer support and
make provision for any possible difficulties experienced by children, or their families,
following a domestic incident within the home.
We are keen to offer the best support possible to all our pupils and we know that this
project has been extremely beneficial for all those involved over the last few years
hence our reason to continue to be part of this project.
If you have any questions about the school’s involvement with this project please do
not hesitate to contact the school office.
Mr Pout, Executive Prinicpal.

YEAR 13 LEARNING PROGRAMME ASSESSMENT WEEK 1 - 29TH OCTOBER TO 2ND NOVEMBER (INCLUSIVE) From Monday 29th October until Friday 2nd November (inclusive), all students in Year 13
will be undertaking assessments in the subjects they are currently studying. For both
A-level and BTEC subjects, these assessments will be based on past paper questions
and indeed complete papers and will be taken under exam conditions to best
prepare your son/daughter for final examinations in May/June 2019.
Please see below the exam timetable so your son/daughter is aware of when their
examinations take place. All morning exams will start as soon as possible at 9:00am. It
is vital that your son/daughter is in school and registered at 8:50am with their tutor to
allow them to get to the Arts Theatre/Gym for a 9:00am start.
Afternoon examinations commence at 1:10pm. Your son/daughter should report to
the Arts Theatre/Gym immediately from lunch.
Please could you encourage and support your son/daughter to prepare thoroughly
for these exams as they will give them a good indication of the progress they have
made to date and what they need to do to improve in order that they can secure
fantastic exam results in the summer of 2019.

PUPIL PREMIUM FUNDING FOR ADOPTED CHILDREN
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What is the Pupil Premium?
Pupil Premium is additional funding given to schools in England to tackle disadvantage
and close the attainment gap between eligible pupils and their peers.
What are the eligibility criteria?
From academic year 2014/15, state maintained schools (funded by the local
education authority) and non-maintained special schools (not funded by the local
education authority) will attract the Pupil Premium for children:
that were adopted from care in England (including those adopted before
December 2005);
that left care under a Special Guardianship Order (under the Children Act 1989);
that left care under a Residential Order (under the Children Act 1989);
are in Reception to Year 11;
where the parent self-declares their child’s status to the school, providing
supporting evidence (e.g. Adoption Order); and
where the school records on the School Census that it has a child on roll who
meets the above criteria.
(Pupils will be referred to as children adopted from care and post-LAC (for SGO/RO)
throughout the remainder of this document.)
Why are children adopted from care and those who leave care under a Special
Guardianship or Residential Order eligible for Pupil Premium?
All adopted children have experienced loss and many experienced trauma in their
early lives. 70 per cent of those adopted in 2009-10 entered care due to abuse or
neglect. Adoption offers bright futures for children from care, but it does not erase
their past.
80 percent of adopters in our research said their child needs more support than their
peers and nearly two thirds of parents (59 percent) said their child is always trying to
catch up in school and make up for their early life experiences.
Adopted children's early experiences can have a lasting impact, particularly at
school. Therefore teachers and schools have a vital role to play in helping these
children emotionally, socially and educationally by providing specific support to raise
their attainment and address their wider needs.
How will children adopted from care and post-LAC access the pupil premium?
Funding is paid directly to schools for schools to use. Parents and guardians need to
self-declare their child’s status to the school where their child is on roll.
Parents and guardians are required to provide evidence to the school, for example
their Adoption Order or a letter from the local authority that originally looked after the
child. The school will use this evidence to record the child's status on the school census.
Once schools have declared a child's eligibility on the school census, they can access
Pupil Premium funding.
How do I present sensitive information when declaring to schools?
Information detailed on an Adoption Order is sensitive and includes information you
may not want to share with your child's school. Parents can photocopy the child's
Adoption Order and conceal information about birth parents before they present it to
10
schools. The crucial information which needs to be visible is the child's name (since
they were adopted) and the name of the agency they were originally adopted from.
When is the self-declaration deadline?
In order for schools to receive funding children need to be recorded as eligible on the
school census. The next school census deadline is 9th November 2018.
Schools will not necessarily be aware that they have adopted children and post-LAC
on roll. We therefore encourage parents and guardians to present their child's
information, rather than rely on the school to approach them.
Will parents and guardians need to self-declare again? If so, when?
Parents and guardians will need to self-declare again if their child moves school. If the
child does not change schools they will continue to attract Pupil Premium funding.
Parents and guardians will need to ensure that they self-declare to their child's new
school by the January school census date prior to their child's move. This will ensure
schools are able to access funding from the child's start date.
How much funding will each school receive?
The Pupil Premium is £2,300 per eligible child, per year.
How is funding paid?
Funding is paid directly to schools.
When will schools receive the Pupil Premium funding?
Funding is paid to local authorities and or schools on a quarterly basis.
What school types attract the Pupil Premium for children adopted from care/post-LAC?
Mainstream schools and non-maintained special schools.
My child is in school post-16, will they receive Pupil Premium?
No. The Pupil Premium is additional funding for schools from reception to Year 11.
Funding for post-16 education is outside of the Pupil Premium.
Is the funding ring-fenced for each child?
No. Funding is not ring-fenced and schools can pool Pupil Premium money for
numerous children to pay for collective support to gain maximum impact from the
funding. The Pupil Premium is additional money for schools to improve the educational
and personal outcomes of disadvantaged pupils including those who have been
adopted from care. It is not intended that the additional funding should be used to
back-fill the general school budget nor that the funding should be used to support
other groups of pupils. Schools are inspected by Ofsted on their effective use of Pupil
Premium funding.
For advice and guidance on support for eligible children in school contact the Adoption UK
helpline between 10am and 4pm Monday to Friday on: 0844 848 7900.
If your child is adopted and you would like the school to obtain pupil premium funding on
their behalf please contact Mr Owens via email ([email protected]) or on the
main school number (01744 677 205) as soon as possible.
Please note that if you have registered you child for pupil premium funding at primary school
this information will NOT have been passed on (legislation prevents the sharing of this data)
and therefore you will need to re-register your son/daughter’s eligibility with us. Thank you.
