Home Learning Class 4 – Summer 2 Week 6
Summer 2 topic: Were the Vikings really vicious?
English
This week, I would like you to play the word class game I have emailed out. It is a fun way to revise some of the word classes – I hope you enjoy it! The following definitions may help: Noun: A noun is a word for a person, place, or thing. Adjective: Adjectives are words used to describe and give more information about a noun, which could be a person, place or object. Verb: A verb is a kind of word (part of speech) that tells about an action or a state. It is the main part of a sentence: every sentence has a verb. Adverb: An adverb is a word that provides more information about a verb, or sometimes about an adjective or another adverb. Generally, the information added by adverbs tells us how, when, where or to what extent something was done. Pronoun: a pronoun (as I, you, it, or they) used instead of a noun that names a definite person or thing. Article: The articles are the words "a," "an," and "the." They define whether something is specific or unspecific. Preposition: A preposition is a word that tells you where or when something is in relation to something else. Examples of prepositions include words like after, before, on, under, inside and outside. Conjunction: Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases, or clauses together. (FANBOYS / ISAWAWABUB) In addition, I have emailed three English sessions based on more of Edward Lear’s classic poetry.

Topic
This week, we continue our topic …
Were the Vikings really vicious? This week, I would like you to research what life would have been like for a Viking child. These websites are a good starting point:
https://th.bing.com/th/id/OIP.66Jd0DjVlifNuriFQmzwQQHaFj?w=202&h=159&c=7&o=5&pid=1.7
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/clips/zrthfg8
https://bavipower.com/blogs/bavipower-viking-blog/what-was-life-of-viking-children-like
Please write a diary entry in role as a child. I would love to see it so if you are working from home, please send it to us. I have sent a PowerPoint via email to help you with your ideas and layout.
Art
In Art, we will continue to be inspired by flowers. This week, I want you to research the work of Andy Warhol and replicate his style. You could print, paint or draw using his work as a starting point or use a mix of media.
PSHE
Year 5 – Looking after our mental health is just as important as looking after our physical health, and they often go hand in hand to support each other. Over the next few weeks we are going to look at the 5 ways to wellbeing. These are 5 steps we can take to improve our mental health and wellbeing. Trying these
things could help us feel more positive and get the most out of life. At Summerseat, we talk about ‘Making Summerseat Smile’, with each letter of SMILE referring to an area of wellbeing. Have a look at the poster attached and think about the meaning of the 5 parts. S - Stay connected M - Move to keep active I - Inspired to give L - Look and take notice E - Enjoy and keep learning This week we are going to focus on being ‘inspired to give’. Sometimes, we find the greatest joy for ourselves by helping a friend or family member and just trying to make someone else smile. This can be an act of kindness or giving no matter how big or small. It would be great if you could send us some ideas of what you have done to [email protected] Remember, ‘Do good, love your neighbour, it’s in you.’ Year 6 – This week, we will continuing to work on our transition project, ‘Be awesome, go big!’ If you are in school, we will work through this together in class. If you aren’t able to join us, please look at this at home. We will cover session 5 and session 6 this week. I have sent the details via email. These have been sent as separate emails due to the file sizes.
Let’s keep safe, keep happy and carry on learning!
Best Wishes,
Mrs Whittaker & Mr Ormrod
Reading Comprehension
The Dream Asylum
The Dream Asylum was not a nice place. It was a tall, concrete building that occasionally
oozed a sinister blue light and never had the same number of floors as before. There were
hardly any windows and they often changed position. It was almost as if the entire building
rearranged itself when no one was looking, a playful child intent on making the adults doubt
their sanity.
The whole Asylum was built for one purpose: giving the 'treatment'. The 'treatment'
was a brilliantly clever idea, so well thought out and planned that nothing could ever go
wrong. Of course, similar people had claimed the Titanic was the 'unsinkable ship'.
In principle, it was perfect. You'd have a bad dream, the horrifying type that harasses
you night after night, and simply sell it to the Asylum. Your dream is gone, never to return,
and you get paid for it. Perfect, right? Or, that was the idea. In reality, people began selling
good dreams, (as those are worth far more) for a little extra cash. Or they began scoffing
cheese before they went to bed, hoping for a nightmare they could part with.
Of course, an idea so perfect and wonderful simply had to go wrong at some point.
People who had sold their dreams began getting side effects, ones they hadn't been warned
about, ones that made their thoughts dangerous and terrifying. Soon, the Asylum even
began taking dreams you didn't want to sell; your family holiday at the beach or when you
learnt to ride a bike. The Asylum became its own person; a building that suddenly didn't
need staff to operate the machines anymore.
Then, it wasn't just taking dreams; it was taking memories too. People left the
building with a wad of cash and no idea who they were or how they came to be there. The
worst part about the Dream Asylum, though, was that no one realised how dangerous it had
become until it was too late. The damage was done; thousands of people wandering around
without a clue as to who they were or what had happened to them.
It was shut down, supposedly. The plan was to knock the building down, pave over
the foundations. But somehow, the planning always got delayed, until suddenly it was as if
the planning was never there to begin with. The building remained, oozing its new blue
light.
As time went on, it became part of the landscape, just another building in the
background. Occasionally mothers used it to scare their children; 'If you don't behave, the
Dream Asylum will reopen and gobble you up!'
People soon forgot the horrors the Asylum caused; it was easier than remembering.
