In the summer of 2014, I took a week-longclass at West Chester University on musicwith young children. It was a fairly small

class, but interestingly a couple of people hadcome from long distances to take it, includingtwo women from India. It was quite exciting. Italso caused me to change many of the tech-niques I use with my youngest singers.

One of the best parts of the week was a half day we spent discussing whatconstitutes great literature for children – not just musical literature, but writ-ten stories, as well. (I actually learned the difference between a NewburyAward and a Caldecott Award – duh.) A few of the criteria we identified inthe best of children’s literature are:

1. It must appeal to adults as well as children2. It must include a sense of wonder, make-believe, awe or fantasy3. The story must be delicious even after 30 repetitions4. *-see below

Clearly the founders of our faiths knew these intrinsically. Aren’t the sto-ries of Advent and Hanukah filled with these criteria? I admit I have heardthe stories well over 30 times – yet they still draw me in and amaze me atthe love of a God who cares enough about us to have done wondrousthings, and who is still doing wondrous things.

I know how busy you will all be this season. This little note comes withevery good wish from me to you, the members of the Philadelphia ChapterAGO, for a blessed and wondrous holiday season. I hope our paths willcross at a concert, service, or the Chapter Holiday Party on December 29!

Blessings!

"Tis the season of giving!"

Soon these and other sayings will be flyingaround as we enter the holiday season.Unfortunately, the marketing machine that is the

merchandising world has changed that into "Tis the season of buying (soyou can be 'giving')". It's a shame that, in the hustle and bustle of ourbusy lives, the phrase "Peace on earth and goodwill to men" gets lost inthe "din" along with all the others.I have a simple way that you might be able to be giving and, at the sametime, bring some goodwill. I'm sure you all know that our numbers in bothour local chapter as well as the Nation AGO have been diminishing. Weoften lament about this and rush to figure out new ways to attract newmembers. However, do we spend enough time figuring out why thosewho are no longer members left us? Certainly we lose members through natural attrition (i.e. death or retire-ment from active organ service). Surprisingly, that is a relatively smallpercentage of the total loss. Maybe some have left because the didn'tfeel part of the group. Others might have simply forgot to renew theirmembership. We will never know the reason until we ask.I would love, as Registrar, to contact all of those who have either can-celled their membership or who are extremely late in paying their annualdues. Unfortunately, this proves to be a rather herculean task.Hopefully, there is someone (or several) members who might aid me inour efforts to increase our membership through membership retention. If you might willing to help spread the goodwill of our chapter by giving alittle bit of your time to aid me in reaching out to the "lost", please give mea call.

Season's blessings!John Kampmeyer

In November 1997, Old Pine church made the decisionto purchase an historic J. W. Steere Pipe Organ toreplace the ailing electronic organ then in use.

Previous to that, the church had a Stanbridge three man-ual tracker organ, installed in 1876, which fell into disre-pair sometime during the first half of the 20th century. The J. W. Steere and Sons Opus #344 Pipe Organ wasoriginally built and installed in 1892 for the UnitarianUniversalist Church located in Elgin, Illinois and was pur-chased by Mr. Robert B. Whiting in 1992. Mr. Whitingwas an organ enthusiast who had collected some fifty

historic organs over his lifetime. One of his attractions tothe J. W. Steere Pipe Organ was to save this significantexample of 19th century American Organ construction. The instrument was completely overhauled and installedin his studio in 1992. Mr. Whiting considered this hisfavorite of all the historic organs he had purchased overthe years, due to its unusually rich and beautiful tone. After Mr. Whiting’s death, the instrument went up forauction and was purchased by Patrick Murphy, who didthe renovation. The organ was installed at Old Pine dur-ing the summer of 1998.

EDUCATION COMMITTEE

DECEMBER 2017 VOLUME LXXX, NO. 411

Last December at the AGONext scholarship audition I hadthe chance to meet a young

man who, besides his wonderfulplaying had ambitious plans regard-ing his future career as an organist. When I was his age I did not havesuch specific plans for my future...

Would you introduce yourself? My name is Jinsok Kraybill. I am 15, and in 10thgrade. This is my sixth year of homeschooling, which allows me to have a lot more time to pursuemy music. I am a conservative Presbyterian, an avidgolfer, and I like to design churches, golf courses, and pipe organs.

How did you get in touch with the organ?I got interested in the organ when I was 3 at FirstPresbyterian in Hollidaysburg, PA (my grand-mother's church.) My parents could not find mebecause I had gone into the choir loft to look at theorgan - a 1957, 4-manual, Tellers pipe organ, withconsole by Kegg. The organist was very nice andshowed me everything. I think what intrigued mewere all the controls, stops, and lovely, colorfulsounds that came out of it. I have my own electronicorgan at home, but I am thankful to be able to prac-tice at St. James ELCA, Pottstown, and AugustusELCA, Trappe. Whenever we can, we go to organconcerts (Macy’s, Ursinus, 1st Pres Allentown) andother musical performances (Temple’s Rock Hall,Verizon Hall, Vox Amadeus.)

Tell me more about your musical background.I have been studying organ for 2 years with GordonTurk. My piano teacher’s piano teacher knew Dr.Turk and suggested we call him. The rest is history,as they say! I just finished Johann Pachelbel’s Eminor Toccata, and I am working through the 8Preludes and Fugues attributed to J.S. Bach. LastDecember when auditioning for the AGO Next schol-arship, I played All Glory Laud and Honor, arrangedby Dan Miller. I have been transcribing Handel’sHallelujah Chorus for the organ -- I don’t rememberwhat version I am on! I am not in any official churchposition, but I have played at First Presbyterian,Hollidaysburg, St. James ELCA for Palm Sunday, and Augustus ELCA for various occasions. I havealso played the keyboard for my own church, Grace& Peace PCA.

What are your future plans? My college plan is to go to a university, like Indiana,to study organ, and be on the golf team. My dreamis to be a concert and church organist, or a PGA pro.I am also interested in being a pharmaceutical rep, because I like people and I heard they play a lot ofgolf.

Dear Friends,

By now you might well wonderjust how long we’ll be goingon about the move of OHS to

Stoneleigh. It could go on forawhile, because there’s a goodchance that the best is yet tocome. For several years nowwe’ve been at this, workingtogether with Natural Lands, JohnMilner Architects, and a group ofdedicated craftsmen to repurposehistoric Stoneleigh Mansion and grounds for use bytwo nonprofit institutions, each dedicated to preser-vation. Throughout this extended period we havebeen joined by members of the PhiladelphiaChapter, AGO, who have offered us moral supportand participation in a number of initiatives. And,indeed, the first group we will convene at Stoneleighare your members who are especially interested inthe Philadelphia Chapter Archives, as well as thoseof the OHS. I daresay we will mounting projects ofreal interest in the coming months, and years.

I was especially happy to be invited by EdwardLandin to participate in the coming JanuaryJumpstart on Saturday the 13th. Joining me for theOHS presentation will be our Archivist, Bynum Petty, whom many of you know from his submissions tothis column. He will be on hand to offer something ofa “tour” of the OHS Library and Archives atStoneleigh. Also joining us, Adam Dieffenbach, pro-prietor of Emery Brothers, engaged in the installationof the Aeolian-Skinner Op. 878 residence organ atStoneleigh. When we spoke about this at an earlierJanuary Jumpstart, the project was largely on paper. Now it is taking shape, and we will have lots toreport. And before long we will invite you to come trythe instrument.

We are so pleased to be settling amongst you —hoping to become good neighbors — and returningthe welcome you have generously offered to us.

On behalf of the Board of OHS, and all our mem-bers, I wish you a wonderful holiday time and greatsuccess with beautiful music-making — from Adventthrough Christmas Day — into the New Year,Epiphany, and beyond!

Sincerely,Jim

TALE PIPESMary Elizabeth Campbell, CAGO, Editor

‘Twas the night before Christmas,Choir packed in the loft,

We’re up later than usual,An alto just coughed.

The director is fretting,With hopes that the flock,

Each nuance is gettingAs they attempt Bach,

We’re now sporting new incense,And candles ablaze,

Some basses grabbed handkerchiefs,The sopranos looked dazed.

The church is quite full and so,Little ones cute,

Young brothers start battling,Alas they’re not mute,

Special music – two trumpetsAlways reliable,

But with mouthfuls of crumpetsMore right notes – desirable,

Voice and organ, all swelling,But now there’s a cipher,

Dash off – usher/repairman,In this church he’s a lifer!

There are solos and chorus,And our newest tenor,

Is in danger of baskingIn personal splendor

We’re all filled with awe,Touched by music serene.

May we all be more loving,Give up venting of spleen.

May your music be lovely,May tension decrease,

May you make it to January,And all in one piece!

~ Mib
