Dismembered bodyfound in the bush
LYDENBURG - A decapitated body with some of its limbs removed was discovered on a farm about three kilometres from town on Tuesday.
According to Lydenburg SAPS spokesman, Capt Alfred Moela, the gruesome discovery was made by employees of Working for Water. “Contractors for the department of environmental affairs were busy removing alien trees in the Klipspruit area. While working, Mr Ephraim Magolego came across an arm, severed from the elbow down,” said Moela. The arm still had on a part of a shirt with wrist buttons.
Moela said Magolego immediately informed his superiors, and they in turn notii ed the police of the discovery.
“The station commander was made aware of the discovered limb and ofi cers were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, I and other ofi cers started investigating. About i ve metres away from the severed arm, we discovered a skull.
“Some of the teeth have been broken which could indicate a struggle. A few metres from the skull and the arm, we found the remains of the body.”
Moela said the body was still partially clothed with pants and a belt. The local criminal record centre was called to the scene. Mpumalanga pathologists removed the corpse.
Moela said he suspected that the person could have been murdered either at the scene or that the body was dumped there after being killed. “The fact that the limbs were Capt Alfred Moela points to where the body was discovered.

scattered and the teeth broken is a good indication that the person could indeed have been murdered.”
He said police would now go through records to establish if a missing-persons i le has been opened in the past couple of months.
Because of the severe decomposition of the body, the gender and identity of the person could not be established because mummii cation had set in. DNA collection and a possible cause of death will be investigated by pathologists. An inquest into the death has been opened.
Moela said if anyone has any information regarding the body or if anyone is aware of a person who has gone missing, they should contact Capt Aaron Digoro on 082-303-9799.

Strike in entry hall halts the municipal services
LYDENBURG - Members of the South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) trashed the entrance to Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) and prevented residents from paying their municipal accounts on Monday.
TCLM held interviews for the appointment of a new municipal manager last Thursday and Friday.
Mr Themba Sibiya, from Samwu, said the union was excluded from the interviews and was being kept in the dark with regard to the appointment of the manager.
“We were not allowed to form part of the panel which was screening potential candidates for the position. Samwu was excluded and we understand that a resident from Rietfontein has apparently been appointed as the new municipal manager,” he said.
The same morning, the executive mayor, Ms Selina Mashigo-Sekgobela, called a meeting with the newspaper to discuss the uproar by Samwu.
Mashigo, along with members of the mayoral committee, said on February 1 union members sent a memorandum to TCLM about their concern of not forming part of the selection panel.
The newspaper was shown the correspondence between Samwu and the municipality.
The acting municipal manager, Mr Eugene Malungana, said the municipality responded to the memorandum and stated that as per resolution, union members were not allowed
to form part of the selection panel.“Only the mayor, members of the
executive committee, and external stakeholders may form part of this panel. We have called the union for a meeting to address the current issue, but they simply walked out of the meeting. We will try again to engage with them and should they not comply, we will have to issue them with ultimatums and possible disciplinary actions,” he said.
TCLM oficials said they would like to apologise to residents for the inconvenience caused and said the clean up of the town will be attended to.
Malungana said the process is still unfolding, but that the newspaper will be provided with the necessary feedback. Oficials conirmed that the municipal manager’s position has not been illed and that the process is ongoing.
The municipality was not sure how long the strike and uproar will last. In the meantime, it stated that all services were suspended due to security reasons.
“Electricity can be bought from our external vendors like SPAR, Vodacom and Engen garages,” said Malungana.

Thaba Chweu ordered to pay up
LYDENBURG - Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM) has been ordered by the Pretoria High Court to pay no less than R1 550 000 in respect of loss of earnings to Mr Charles Collin Bond after he hit a pothole with his motorcycle in Viljoen Street in 2011.
In September the Sheriff laid claim on seven municipal vehicles to the combined value of R790 000, after Thaba Chweu failed to honour a payment agreement between TCLM and Bond’s legal team, Pieter Nel Attorneys in Mbombela. This is the same case in which TCLM has now been ordered to pay R1 550 000.
According to Mr Juan Terblanché from Pieter Nel Attorneys, the accident in which Bond sustained injuries and damages occurred in 2011. “TCLM accepted a percentage of accountability for the damages and medical expenses that Bond incurred when his motorcycle hit the pothole. They, however, failed to make payment, and thus we applied for the warrant of execution.”
Bond lived in Lydenburg at the time, but has since relocated.
On Friday February 3, the High Court ruled that not only would TCLM pay the amount for loss of income, but it was
ordered to pay all Bond’s costs of suit on the High Court scale to date.
Furthermore, the municipality was also ordered to pay the costs of attending to the examinations and obtaining all the medicolegal and actuarial reports, addendum reports, and any joint reports, as well as the qualifying and reservation fees and court attendances of 10 experts.
The municipality also has to pay the preparation of six trial bundles, the costs of senior-junior counsel, the costs of attorney and correspondent attorneys which include travelling costs, attendance to court, all
pre-trial conferences, formulation of pre-trial minutes, and costs for actual attendances to pre-trial conferences.
Pieter Nel Attorneys said this
amount is in respect of the claimant’s past and future loss of earnings and earning capacity, and in addition to the R880 731 52 which was recovered in 2016 from the municipality regarding the client’s damage to the motorcycle, medical expenses, and satisfaction for pain and suffering.
The newspaper sent through queries to TCLM in order to establish whether it will appeal the ruling of the High Court. Mr Puleng Mapheto, communications manager at TCLM, said he was still waiting for feedback from the municipality’s legal department.

accountability for the damages and medical

Police root out dagga plants at local farm
OHRIGSTAD - The local SAPS’s crime prevention members discovered dagga plants on a farm, Kaspernek Orchards on Tuesday.
According to the station’s spokesman, Sgt Kholofelo Phokane, they raided the farm outside the town.
“The plants were immediately uprooted when it was found. No one was arrested as the suspect fl ed when he saw the police van. We will strive to get him, in order to get more information related to the matter.”
Phokane encouraged locals to report people dealing with drugs and dagga at the police station.
Police clamped down on a drug dealer with 45 grams of dagga in his possession in Marikana last Friday. According to Capt Alfred Moela, spokesman for Lydenburg SAPS, police received a tip-off from a community member about a dealer in possession of dagga he was about to sell. “Police requested access to the suspect’s house and found the drugs. Ofi cers coni scated seven bags of ‘pokes’. Pokes is a street name for a volume of dagga similar to that of a baggy.” The suspect appeared in the Lydenburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday. He was i ned R500 after admittance of guilt.

Man sentenced for kidnapping and raping a woman
BURGERSFORT - Ohrigstad SAPS welcomed the sentencing of a 41-year-old man, Elmon Manzini, who was found guilty by the Burgersfort Regional Court on charges of rape and kidnapping last Monday.
Manzini was arrested by the police at Maepa Village in March last year after they received a complaint of kidnapping and rape.
His case was transferred to the police’s family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit (FCS) at Burgersfort Cluster.
Manzini abducted and raped a woman from Maepa Village for two days.
“Through the good investigation by this special unit, the matter has now been laid to rest and the man has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment for rape and one year for kidnapping,” said spokesman for Ohrigstad SAPS, Sgt Kholofelo Phokane.
The station commander, Capt Getrude Mashego, welcomed the judgement as well.
She applauded the police for their determination and thorough investigation, which contributed to the court handing down a guilty verdict and lengthy jail time.
“We hope that this sentence will serve as a deterrent to people like Manzini who do not respect the laws of our country,” added Mashego.
Mashego applauded the police for their determination and

Electrical amenities in shocking stateLYDENBURG - The scene where Jaden
Landsberg (10) was apparently electrocuted by a live municipal wire in Lombaard Street, has yet to be fenced off and secured.
A source supplied the newspaper with photos of the site, and shockingly enough, the electrical box in which the wire was switched off was left unlocked and unsecured.
He said that on account of this, anyone could have had access to the box and could switch the cable back on. He also included photos of another live cable, merely metres away from where Jaden was electrocuted, housed in a steel pipe.
When the pipe was removed, the cables were totally exposed and immersed in water,
which accumulated after the rain. The cable was tested and yet again, it was discovered that it was live, emitting 230 volts of electricity.
The source explained that there were two boxes at the scene.
One of them is equipped with a three-phase breaker, whereby electricity would be cut in case something or someone should make contact with it.
The box responsible for the wire that possibly led to Jaden’s electrocution, however, had no breaker, so the electricity would never have tripped.
The newspaper also learned about a minisubstation behind Jock’s Country Stalls that was only fenced by what could only be described as something similar to a cattle kraal. Steelburger/Lydenburg News
went to investigate and was shocked to discover that the substation was indeed only fenced off. What was even more disturbing was the fact that the gate was open and lying on the ground.
Queries regarding the situation were sent to Thaba Chweu Local Municipality (TCLM). The municipality responded to questions regarding the discovery and said that the area was barricaded and the electricity box was locked. “We believe the law-enforcement agency is also busy with their own investigation.
“Tampering with the scene would actually be obstruction of justice. We strongly warn people not to tamper with the scene. We suspect illegal connection of electricity and we have yet to investigate.”

Advice for a long marriage

This couple survived decades together. Today they are still madly in love. They knew each other a year before they got engaged.
They got married on October 2, 1956. Their marriage yielded three sons, Carl, who is operating Magaba Filling Station, Roelof is a councillor for the DA in Polokwane, and Philip is an auditor in Winkelspruit.
They celebrated their 60th anniversary in October, with friends and relatives.
their advice for a long, healthy marriage:• Marry for love, nothing else.• Have respect for each other.• Partners must also be friends.• Both parties have to control their temper.• Respect each other.• Respect each other’s family. Never think you are not getting married to the family. You have to get along with them.• Don’t always only think of yourselves, but put your partner i rst.• You may have different opinions, but everything can be solved with discussion.• If God is part of your marriage, it will succeed.

Couple celebrates 32 years of love
With February being a love month there are some popular couples in Tubatse that have been married for ages. These people had been through thick and thin and are mostly seen around town side by side. One couple that comes to mind is Carl and Alida Lourens from Magaba Filling Station. The two love birds i rst went out as a couple in 1984 before they tied the knot on January 5, 1986. The pair was blessed with three children, a son Philip and daughters Alicia and Carla. Proud father Carl remarked, “Philip is an architect, Alicia is the manager of Steers Magaba and Carla is in her i nal year studying BA corporate communication.” The two celebrated their 32nd anni-versary last month.
Their advice for young couples to stay together:• Understand that we are all different and have different tastes and different opinions.• Always communicate about everything, the good things and problems.• Never go to bed without making peace. • A marriage cannot exist without love. It is important not to go for looks only, because that will fade away.• Honesty at all times is very important and there is no room for secrets.• A marriage should have three parties: God, the man and the wife.

Join the age-old and international festivitiesValentine’s Day is a day of gifts,
treasuring loved ones and affection. This day is now celebrated in a
completely different way that which it originally was. According to www.history.com, the history of this day is quite complex. It is the most popular day of the year with 64 per cent of the population celebrating it.
The ancient Romans held a festival in mid-February called Lupercalia. When Christians started to celebrate it, they Christianised it. There was more than one saint called Valentine. One was executed for marrying young couples in secret because the emperor, Claudius the Second, felt that young single men made better soldiers. Pope Gelasius declared February 14 a day to honour the tender-hearted St Valentine.
In 1300 the day became associated with love and romance. In the 15th century the i rst written Valentine’s greetings were sent out. In the 17th century people started exchanging
gifts. The i rst mass production of Valentine’s cards happened in 1840. Today more than one billion cards are sent out every year. About 35 million heart-shaped boxes of chocolate are sold, and 220 million red roses are produced for this day.
Another staggering fact is that more than six million couples get engaged on Valentine’s Day annually.
• Not only young people celebrate this day. Steelburger/Lydenburg News found a couple who have been married for 39 years. The newspaper learned their secret to a long happy marriage.
André and Hilda Lombard met when her brother-in-law introduced them at a gathering. He was in the army and she was studying to become a teacher. “It was love at i rst
sight, we even managed the distance relationship by visiting each other on weekends,” the cou-ple tells. The secret to their long, lasting marriage is patience and faith.
They believe you must have God in your relationship and that you must always communicate, even when you are angry at each other.

Pupils overjoyed by gift of shoes and uniforms
BURGERSFORT - Things will be different this year for hundreds of underprivileged schoolchildren at Tubatse Primary School. The pupils were overjoyed when Tubatse Crossing Regional Mall and Potter’s Touch Foundation donated brand-new uniforms and shoes to the school.
According to Caroline Modjadji, the mall’s marketing manager, the Potter’s Touch helped to identify the school most in need of assistance in the area.
The organisation identii ed Tubatse, and decided to buy the learners school uniforms. “As Tubatse Crossing Mall, we are delighted to make a difference in the life of another. We wanted to uphold the dignity of the less-fortunate pupils. We are glad to have restored the pride of some of the learners. Helping locals will always be our top priority,” she said.
Members of Potter’s Touch said they were happy to have partnered with the mall to change the lives of community members. “We are thinking of adopting Tubatse Primary, and donating to it yearly.” The school’s management team thanked the two stakeholders for the gifts.

Mathews Phosa College team not favoured with a win this time round
Alongside a host of some successful teams in the Mbombela region, the Mathews Phosa College (MPC) football team’s ambition burns as brightly as ever as they seek an opportunity to add a tournament trophy to the school cabinet.
A host of friendly and local tournaments have been lined up to boost the team’s i tness and morale. Headed by captain Warren Shabangu, they have become the team to beat.
Recently the school’s soccer team played against Watershed High School in the i rst of a series of matches in the KaBokweni knockout tournament.
MPC faced Watershed College at St Marks. The atmosphere was indescribable, due to this being a knockout match.
Though the game was on MPC’s side with goals from i rst team players Shabangu and Musi Khoza, they lost out on R10 000 in the tournament due to an unfortunate loss to Watershed High. In the end, MPC lost the match 2-3.

Nuwe rugbybloed is welkom by Ratelspan

Learners compete to represent cluster
It was an athletic spectacle when pupils from all circuits in the Fetakgomo Greater Tubatse Municipality in Burgersfort participated in various sporting codes last Friday. The games were held at Alverton’s Lehlabile Secondary School. I see them putting Calvin College on the map in the future, who knows maybe one day they will emulate the likes of Wayde van Niekerk and Caster Semenya,” Neizel said.
