Pete Ricketts hasn’t been able to get a comprehensive prop- erty tax proposal through the legislature, but remains optimistic as he begins work with a new legislature. Ricketts says property tax relief remains his top priority, adding he’s ready to work with a legislature which added 13 new members. “So, certainly this is a different legislature, because you have different skill sets,” Ricketts tells reporters. “Every legislature is different and part of the proc- ess of learning to work together is figuring how to best leverage everybody’s skills.” It is a legislature many perceive as having a different ideology than previous legislatures. “I think it’s too early to tell on that,” according to Ricketts. “Again, some of the things that we work on are not ideological. When we’re talking about growing Nebraska and creating more job opportunities that’s not a partisan issue. We may disagree on how to approach it, but that’s part of the process of learning to work together.” Ricketts has been able to get modest property tax relief through the legislature, such as adding money to the state property tax relief fund. Larger, comprehensive property tax relief has eluded him. Proposals have hit the floor of the Unicameral only to fail to attract the 33 votes from the 49-senator chamber needed to end a filibuster and go to a vote. RENEWING PUSH TO ABOLISH DEATH PENALTY Nebraska State Sen. Ernie Chambers is renewing his push to abol- ish the death penalty after his last successful attempt was over- turned by voters in 2016. The longtime Omaha senator introduced a repeal bill Thursday on the Nebraska legislative session’s second day. Nebraska received national attention in 2015 when the Legis- lature overrode Gov. Pete Ricketts’ veto and ended capital punish- ment. Death penalty supporters responded with a ballot campaign that placed the issue before voters, who reinstated the punishment. Ricketts donated $300,000 of his own money to the campaign. Nebraska executed its first inmate since 1997 last year, using a never-before-tried combination of drugs. Prison officials refused to identify their supplier, prompting lawsuits that accused them of vio- lating Nebraska’s public-records laws. Chambers has fought for decades to abolish capital punishment. INVESTIGATION OF A BOMB THREAT The Kearney Police Department and Kearney Public Schools are investigating a bomb threat at Kearney’s Horizon Middle School. School staff notified law enforcement around 8:00am Thursday after a schools staff member found a concerning message on a student’s desk in a classroom about a bomb. School officials say that while it was quickly determined that the threat was not credi- ble, they did a thorough sweep of the school and school grounds with nothing suspicious being located. Officers also interviewed witnesses and potential suspects. Kearney Police says it is an ongo- ing investigation and includes a search warrant of the juvenile sus- pect’s residence. Trailing 52-46 at intermission, the Indi-ans picked up the shooting pace in the final 20 minutes (56.4 percent) to pick up the team’s second win on the road. Sopho-more Ron Rice (New York, N.Y.) scored a team-high 21 points to lead the Indians and picked up seven rebounds to tie for team-high honors with sophomore Peanut Cunningham (Louisville, Kent.), who added 19 points. Freshman Mardrez McBride (Augusta, Ga.) scored 18 points and freshman Miles Black (Jonesboro, Ga.) added 12 points. After climbing back to the .500 mark with a 7-7 mark, the Indians return home Tuesday for one of only two games this month at the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center.
