Dear Parishioners, Where have you found God in surprising places recently? The Israelites were grumbling against God in the desert. They had experienced God's saving power in Egypt when he led them forth from slavery to freedom. But now they felt God's absence in the desert. They are tired, worn and weary. They believe they were better off in slavery and think that God has left them. But God appears to them in the desert, in the midst of their grumbling, giving them living water. In the same way, the Samaritan woman at the well never expected to meet God in a Jewish man. She believed this person would be hostile to her. Yet, here she experiences the presence of the living God and goes on to be a great evangelist to many towns. If you have not experienced God in surprising places recently, be prepared. If we open our eyes and our ears this Lent, we might just be given living water.

Fr. Jerry Francik

We have an ample sup-ply of vegetables, soup and pasta. We can also use shampoo, toothpaste, dish and laundry detergent. Victory in Annapolis! For the third straight year, the Maryland General Assembly has stopped the advancement of legisla-tion that would legalize physician-assisted suicide in the state. Thanks to those of you who weighed in with your state lawmakers in opposition to the bill. The bill is dead for the year and our state re-mains free of this dangerous practice. The Mary-land Catholic Conference was part of a broad-based coalition that worked to defeat the bill, which included disability rights advocates, mental health professionals, physicians, nurses, and senior citizen advocacy groups. Along with our coalition partners, and with your support, the Church was successful in defeating this dangerous bill that would have put countless citizens at risk. Take pride in knowing that you played an important role in upholding the dignity of all life by defeating this dangerous and predatory bill! Despite our victory again this year, we fear our work is not done. Sup-porters of physician-assisted suicide have vowed to introduce the bill again in 2018. To stay informed and involved going forward, please visit the Coali-tion website at www.stopassistedsuicidemd.org.
