This is an innovative ‘reading buddy’ system running at 2 primary schools in Motherwell, with 8 more schools in training this year. After lots of research they found the best gap to be 2 years, so the Grade 6 children at these schools read to the Grade 4 chil- dren, which benefits both kids. They read in isiXhosa and in English, as the Grade 4 children will be taught in English from the following year, so they need to know the words. Reading in isiXhosa builds up their home language, making it easier to transfer to English. This is where the Nal’ibali insert in the Herald is so good, as the children make their own books from this supplement, with the isiXhosa words on one side and the English on the other side of the page. These stories stimulate them, and they are transported into another world while listening to their buddy! As the classes are so big there is no way that any teacher can have such a profound effect on each indi- vidual child as the 30 minute reading program has. These older children are first trained in reading strategies for 6 or 7 weeks. Each Gr 6 child prepares his own library and chooses the story each week. He also has to practice, as many English words are new to him too. Sometimes the Gr 4 is a better reader than the older child, which stimulates him to better himself. After the reading, the Gr 6’s discuss issues, then write their experiences in a journal, which encourages critical thinking and self-sufficiency. The teachers at these schools run the programme, and Lesley and Sally only mentor them, as it needs to be sustainable. They are involved at each school for 3 years, then they move on. It was good to have Joe Bazirake, the Treasurer of the Bloemfontein Raadzaal club, as a visitor at our meeting.... ANNIVERSARIES Lesley Young; Joe Bazirake, Sally Potgieter

PARTNER BIRTHDAYS

Sally Potgieter and her co-presenter Lesley Young have both taught at Riebeek College and at NMMU. They are now independent contractors and mentors on a reading project for the GMSA Foundation. This project is called Masikhulisane, which means ‘may we grow one another’.

This is an innovative ‘reading buddy’ system running at 2 primary schools in Motherwell,

with 8 more schools in training this year. After lots of research they found the best

gap to be 2 years, so the Grade 6 children at these schools read to the Grade 4 chil-dren, which benefits both kids.

As the classes are so big there is no way that any teacher can have such a profound effect on each indi-vidual child as the 30 minute reading program has.

Members’ Matters

Chanté Wright gave us two thoughts: “If it is important to you, you will find a way.

If not, you will find an excuse.” “Life is simple, it is just not easy.”
