1 ,, 8 Newsletter No. 32 - Term 4 Week 2 18 October 2018 From the Acting Principal….. We have had a fantastic start to the final term for 2018! I had the opportunity to visit some of the wonderful programs in the school this week such as MiniLit, MacqLit and Jemm Maths. I was so impressed by the children’s willingness to share why the programs were important to them and the strong work ethic they demonstrated. The Performing Arts Program was rocking with musical ensembles by Grade 5&6 children and the Grade 1&2 dance groups. The delicious aroma of muffins filled the stadium in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program, and the excitement of the Japan Tour’s departure was very evident. Branch Out Group A very happy Branch Out Group arrived safely at Narita Airport early Monday morning, and whilst there were a few tears when leaving family members, our students were soon skipping arm in arm through the airport, very excited about the adventure ahead. All of our students are participating in, not only teaching our host school about Australia, but also in our host school's classes and curriculum too! Some of our students helped out in English classes where the Japanese students aren't allowed to speak any Japanese. Other students were immersed in Science classes, P.E., Art and Music. Finally, they all got to meet their host families face to face and there were smiles all around. The host families were also very excited to meet our students Messages from Japan My host family have an apartment and that really surprised me because it was a big apartment. I have my very own bedroom and I slept in a futon. They are spoiling me a lot, with gummies, and lots of presents. Zara I had iced coffee for the first time! I liked it! (Mrs. Thomas was wondering why I was so bouncy). I was so happy when I found out that they are taking me horse riding this weekend. I'm so excited! My host family is amazing! Mackenzie I tried new Japanese food, e.g. sticky beans and canned mushrooms. I like them. I got to meet their pet, Guri, which we just Googled and found out was a really cute type of mouse called a degu mouse (you can look them up!) I have my very own room. And I got a beautiful pink folder to put my things in for school. I have to wash my hair every day. Newsletter No. 32 - Term 4 – Week 2 18 October 2018

From the Acting Principal….. Classes for 2019 We will soon be planning classes for next year. This is a complex process involving a range of factors we need to consider such as gender balance, age composition, academic, social and special needs of each class group. Allocations will not be finalized until the last weeks of the school year.

Friday Assembly The first Friday afternoon assembly was successfully run by our School Leadership Team last week. After some discussion with the teachers we have decided that the children will return to their classes in time for a 3:30pm dismissal to enable easy pick up by parents and siblings. CONGRATULATIONS

A big Congratulations goes to one of our budding authors.

Last term, Gemma C. from 34F entered the National 2018 Schools Poetry and Short Story Competition, with her story ‘The Real Story Behind Drains’. Gemma’s entry was one of more than nine thousand entries Australia wide! This was her first ever entry in such a competition, but she was very brave and gave it a go. Although her story did not make it into the finals, she was rewarded with a certificate and an encouraging letter wishing her better luck next year! Obviously they want to read her next story. We are all very proud of her courage to enter such an event, as well as her desire to challenge herself to improve her skills. Well done Gemma. MR LOPEZ and the Grade 3/4 Team

ELECTION DAY CAKE STALL & BBQ

Kalinda Primary School is once again a Polling Booth for Election Day, on Saturday 24th November. The Fundraising Committee and the Parents & Friends Committee will be holding a sausage sizzle and a cake stall during the day. The coffee van will also be available on the day.

We will need lots of volunteers across the day and would love your help. Information with all the details will be coming home in the next couple of weeks, so please, pop the date in your diary and, if you can set aside an hour or two to help out, that would be fantastic! SHANNON LEITCH on behalf of Parents & Friends Assoc. & Fundraising Committee

Canteen News NEW MENU – The new menu was sent out on Monday 8th October. Please note some prices have changed. This is also available on our website shortly, under “Canteen” and “Notices & Forms”. Spare copies are available at the office. Please dispose of your old menu. The new online menu is going to show the “Healthy Traffic Light” system, with some areas in green, some in orange and some in red. The green writing will be showing foods that are healthy and can be eaten at any time. The items in orange means that it’s quite okay to have them sometimes, and the items in red are those that should only be eaten as a very special treat. You can use this as a guide for your child’s choices. FUTURE DATES: 1st November - Canteen closed just for the day. 4th December - Special Food Day – Ice Cream Day 14th December - Last day for lunch orders for 2018. Helpers Needed If you are able to help at any time in the canteen, it would be very much appreciated. Please contact me in the canteen or leave your name at the office. We are short of volunteers and children love to see their mums, dads, or other family members helping out. JUSTINE WATSON CANTEEN MANAGER

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Friends As part of CBL, our goal is to do something to safeguard our existence. We are doing this by recycling as much e-waste as possible. We are encouraging you to bring in any e-waste that you have left lying around your house that is broken, or any old technology you don’t know what to do with. We would like you to collect your e-waste and bring it to school. There are two boxes at the office; one for e-waste and one for batteries. The final date you can put your e-waste in is Monday, 29th October. The e-waste will be collected from school on the 30th October. Here is a list of the e-waste items that can go into the two boxes (broken, unused and used):

1. iPads 2. iPods 3. Computers and laptops 4. Tablets 5. TVs 6. Mobile and Home Phones 7. Batteries (in box 2)

We hope you can help us achieve our goal of recycling as much as possible. Thank you! Hudson, Phoenix, Jack M, Xavier, Espen, Bailey, Jack H, Ethan, Mackenzie, Jayla, Zara and Seb.
