COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH NEWSLETTER • VOLUME 56 • NUMBER 6 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:4-7 Pastor and author, Tim Keller, speaks about peace and joy in relation to this passage of Scripture. He notes that Paul encourages the Philippians to thank God first, then make a request. This order of things, to thank first and then ask, leads to peace. The peace we desire does not center in receiving the blessings we want, it is found in trusting in the One who blesses. We can thank God because He has the power and ability to grant our request, that He listens to our request, and that His timing is perfect and He knows when and how our request should be granted for our ultimate good. Consider the example of Joseph in the Old Testament. Joseph was sold into slavery by his jealous brothers and carried off to a foreign land. His situation was certainly bad, but Joseph responded by trusting in the Lord. Through it all, God was working for Josephs good and for the saving of many lives. As his fathers favorite son, he had to be stripped of the pride and arrogance that had been in him. All things God worked for good, even that favoritism. The favoritism kept him near his fathers household instead of working in the fields. He learned how to run a household which came in handy when he became a servant in the house of Potiphar in Egypt. He was put in charge of everything in Potiphar s household. Later, when more bad things happened, like being falsely accused and thrown into prison, Joseph continued to trust in the Lord and seek His help. God worked all things for good and Joseph became Pharaohs right-hand man in charge of the food collection and then distribution during a time of famine. All of Josephs experiences, the good and the bad, prepared him well for his job managing people and wealth. For what might God be training you? How can your life experiences, both the good and the bad, prepare you to fulfill Gods purpose for you? Ultimately, God is preparing you to have a beautiful relationship with Him. Trust His strength, not your own. Know His goodness, not the troubles of this world. You can overcome any and all challenges (like the current COVID-19 situation) not because the challenge is taken away, but because God will lead you through them. So, give thanks to God. The situation may not change for you this week, but God sees you, hears you, and has a good plan for you. Trust in Him and experience true and lasting peace. FINANCE UPDATE

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the ten-week period with no in-person Sunday services, our fi-nances are looking very good. The offerings for January – April 2020 are actually $1,200 more than the same period in 2019. Child Care income is up $11,900 over that same period of time. Obviously, we saved quite a bit on expenses for March and April with no bulletins to print and the heat set to 60 degrees! This left us with a positive balance of $2,147 as of April 30. Thanks and praise to God for blessing us so abun-dantly! Thank you to the members of Covenant for mailing in or delivering your offerings to the church office. Your support of the mission and ministry of our church is greatly appreciated. As we move into an uncertain future, please continue to be good stewards of God’s many gifts and blessings!

5 | COVENANT LUTHERAN CHURCH COVENANT TIDINGS

Covenant Reopening

The COVID-19 pandemic is the most challenging situation ever faced by the Church. While sermons are still being prepared and the Word is being proclaimed, we have not been able to adequately minister to all of our members and share God’s Word and Sacrament as we desire. We all want to see worship resume, but how do we do that in a safe and sensible way? There is much information being shared about the virus and how it is transmitted and who is most at risk. It seems we hear or read something new every day. I want to thank our team that has been studying this issue and preparing for a safe return to worship. Their insights and contributions have been invaluable as we look ahead to in-person worship on Sunday, May 31. We trust that you have received the letter that was sent via U.S. Mail on May 19. The letter details some of the safety procedures we are putting into practice for Covenant worship. These include:

Cleaning and sanitizing of the church building before every worship service Hand sanitizer placed in the narthex for worshipper to use upon entering and exiting the

sanctuary The use of masks is recommended, but not required. We will have a limited supply of masks

available for those who do not have one. We will use every third pew to allow for proper social distancing Hymnals, bibles, friendship registers and pencils have been removed from pews There will be no customary “Sharing of the Peace.” No handshakes or hugs! The offering baskets will be placed at back of sanctuary for weekly offerings There will be no common cup for Holy Communion, only disposable individual cups.

The pastor and worship assistant will bring communion to worshippers in the pew. We realize that people have many different thoughts and opinions about COVID-19. Some are not concerned at all and take few precautions. Others are very concerned and hesitant about going out of the house at all. Please try to be understanding of each other. Let’s not judge one another but treat one another with love and patience and kindness. We will do everything possible to ensure a safe return to worship, but we know that some may choose to stay home. If you are in a high-risk category, that may be the right choice for you. As always, if you are not feeling well, please stay home until you are well and healthy. If you have questions or concerns, please give Pastor Voigt a call.

Thank you , FEH Leaders!

Thank you to all those who volunteered as

Sunday morning Bible class leaders and

Sunday school teachers this year. Each of you

is such a blessing to the members of Covenant.

Your willingness to serve is greatly appreciated!

Have a blessed summer!
