Complex Joint Replacement Surgery By Dr. Ashok Kumar P., Unit Chief and Joint Replacement Surgeon, Department of OrthopaedicsA 30 year old girl presented to orthopaedic OPD with difficulty in walking and gross deformity of her left hip. She was unable to walk without support and had gross shortening of her left lower limb. She was evaluated further and was diagnosed to have developmental dysplasia of hip (DDH). Developmental dysplasia of hip is an unusual and rare disorder which affects childs hip joint, which is underdeveloped, leading to patient not being able to walk and is dependent on others for their daily activities. The treatment was challenging in view of poorly formed acetabulum and also head of femur being proximally migrated. The surgery requires extensive planning and execution of a complex surgical procedure which involves using special implants for reconstruction of the patients hip joint and also additionally requires osteotomy of the femur bone. This patient was operated under Unit I , Department of Orthopaedics, by Dr. Ashok Kumar P, Unit Chief and Associate professor, Joint

replacement surgeon and Dr. K M Ponnanna, Joint replacement and sports injury specialist. Post surgery her gait improved phenomenally and her limb length was absolutely restored with drastic change in the patients outlook. Such complex joint replacements are regularly performed in our institution.
