What a busy two weeks it has been in the Stage 3 classes!! Last Thursday the children enjoyed celebrating

World Book Day – learning about books and the richness they add to our lives. It was so beautiful to watch our

little ones interact with the Grade 2s who came to read to us in our garden at the end of the day. A big thank-

you to all the moms who came and read to our classes during story time!

On Saturday 4th

March Reddam House ASB celebrated another fantastic Food Fair. An enormous thank-you to

all the moms and dads who contributed to making this event a success! You are amazing!! A reminder that our

Please bring any donations to class by latest Monday 27th

March.

To conclude our theme of ‘The senses’, last week the children made popcorn in class time. They heard it pop,

smelt it cooking, saw it change shape and then got to eat it with their friends. We are currently busy with the

theme ‘My family’. Thank you to everyone who emailed the detail required to the class teacher. We will be

using this to make a PowerPoint of the children for discussion during morning ring. We are still looking for

moms who are willing to bath their babies in front of the class as part of our morning ring. This is always a VERY

special event! If you are willing and able (and have a baby) please speak to your class teacher.

Miss B’s class are running a week late with starting the ‘My family’ theme due to the discovery of a praying

mantis in the garden on Tuesday. It has been fondly named “Hayden - Jayden - Spotty jelly - Bomb – Gina –

Sparkle - Horsey – Bokkie – Lucky - Lukey” and we are enjoying getting to know him as a class! Due to water

restrictions, our Tactile Day was converted into a Teddy Bears Picnic. The whole ELS had such fun icing biscuits,

making puppets and going on a bear adventure! We hope this will become a regular occurrence on the ELS

calendar.

In preparation for our Extra-Murals starting in Term 2, the Sports Choice form pack will be sent out shortly.

There will be a sport offered by the school and a selection, offered privately at additional cost. The school

does not facilitate these private groups, neither do we draw up the registers for the groups. Parents must make

contact with the service provider, express an interest, find out if a place is available and then register with the

private service provider. In the ELS we will facilitate the attendance at these private extra-murals and we ask

that you fill in the sports register so we are aware of who has a confirmed space in a privately run extra-mural.

Please return the Sports Choice Form to your class teacher by Friday 24 March and contact the relevant Private

extra mural coordinator (should this be your choice), listed below for enrollment.

The Sprayathon was a fun day with the children enjoying their differently coloured hair. Thank you for all your

donations towards CANCSA.

Furthermore, thank you to those of you that volunteered your time to help out at the Food Fair. The day was a

huge success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended!

Last week our children loved learning about ‘’taste”. They tasted various items brought in from home, with

lemon, salt and sugar being the firm favourites amongst the group. This week the Stage 4s have been learning

about healthy food and we have spoken about and promoted healthy lunch snacks. Next week, we continue

with the last of our senses as we explore the theme ‘sound’. The children will have opportunities to listen to

and identify various sounds.

On Thursday the 2nd

of March, we as a school celebrated World Book Day. Our classes were treated to stories

read by the Grade 3s and loved making their own bookmarks.

We have started collecting Easter Eggs. If you would like to donate any, please do so before the end of the

term.

Just a reminder to make sure that all items are marked and to bring in tissues and wet wipes if needed. Some

children do not have aprons; please send in a suitable one as soon as possible. Please also pack in a warm top

as the days are starting to become cooler, especially in the mornings. Furthermore, please return reply slips for

Muscle Mania as soon as possible. Please note that this is a class activity that all children participate in twice a

week and is during the school day and is at an additional cost to the parent. In May, the presenting

Occupational Therapists will facilitate an early evening talk on the programme for parents to attend in order to

understand its implementation, the benefits of the programme and answer any questions.

Below are a few pictures from the past two weeks of our children during activity times

Please note that there will be a selection of wonderful books on display next week should you wish to purchase

any at the Travelling Bookshop.

Newspaper and recycled goods are always useful in class so please send it our way if you have any that is

unwanted.

Have a beautiful week!

Dear Parents,

In Muscle Mania yesterday we started looking at letter formation and very excitingly working in our Happy

Handwriter books. The children were introduced to the first letter in the 'Clever Cat' family. All these letters

start at the same place on the red side (right hand side). So far we have practised writing the letter 'c' saying

the following rhyme as we write it 'c from the doughnut round you go, stop right there you're done you know'.

Next week we will be looking at 'o' and 'a' with the following rhymes 'o from the doughnut round you go, stop

back here you're done you know.' 'a from the doughnut round you go, straight up now and down just so'.

Reminders:

Our outing to Hout Bay Rock pools is on Thursday 16th March.

Easter egg collection finishes on 27 March.

Monday 21st and Tuesday 22nd

March are holidays and school will be closed.

Arrange a time to see your class teacher; the timetable will go up in the classes next to the sign-in register.

We have revised the first 6 Jolly Phonics sounds 's','a','t','i','p','n' and have been looking at how we can put

some of the letters together to make simple words such as 'at' 'in' 'sat' 'it' etc. Our next sound will be 'c/k'.

Please remember we are concentrating on the sound the letter makes and not its name.

Regards,

Mrs Dawson and Mrs Smith

Our fun gala will be taking place next week. Please see the letter issued to the children today and

attached below. The emphasis is on fun and participation rather than winning and competition.

Another exciting event, which took place today, was Fantasy Day, where the children came to school

dressed as their favourite characters. The classrooms were transformed with pirates, princesses,

animals and fairies in abundance.

What a wonderful time we had at the Food Fair on Saturday. Thank you to everyone who made the day such a

success.

We will be busy doing assessments over the next few weeks. Should your child not receive a reading book on

any particular day, do not be alarmed. Do please continue revising the given homework. In class we have been

busy building on our reading skills. We are learning to read more and more words and the books are getting

more difficult. In maths we are continuing to add and subtract as well as practise our counting skills.

Reports for the first term are being issued on Friday 24th

March. You will be able to make an appointment to

meet with your child’s teacher to discuss the report.

Mrs Toffar and Ms Balcomb

Dear Parents,

The children had another two exciting weeks at school. They took part in the Sprayathon and some creative

hairstyles emerged from the morning.

The children enjoyed the presentation by FANSA this week and the interesting experiences from “The Dentist”.

In Math’s we are busy with counting in 2’s and 10’s, bonds up to 12, doubling and halving. In phonics we have

been doing r-blends and s-blends. Next week we will do the _ng and _nk ending blends.

Please take note that the Gala practice occurs on Monday and the actual Gala event will take place on

Wednesday 15th

March 2017. A letter went out today detailing all the information and is attached below.

The term is almost coming to an end and we are hard at work doing assessments for reports. Please ensure that

your child is at school as this is a crucial time for classwork.

As always thank you for your continued support.

Kind regards,

Mrs Beukes and Ms Mellet

It has been an action packed two weeks in Grade 3 with cricket matches, World Book Day, auditory

assessments, Fantasy Day and of course the Food Fair.

We were very privileged to have Riley's granny, an experienced librarian, come and share a variety of books and

interesting author facts with us on World Book Day. Sasha's mom also came in and gave a sneak peek into the

book she is writing - there was a time travelling snow globe, talking furniture and a trip to Paris in our

imaginations, it was awesome!

On Friday we celebrated Fantasy Day with a combined Grade 2 and 3 under the sea fantasy collage featuring

some imaginary protagonists and antagonists and are looking forward to writing some fabulous stories about

them.

We have finished a week of revision and baseline assessments in Mathematics and are excited to start the next

chapter of work - adding vertically with regrouping before the holidays.

Kind Regards,

Mrs Savides and Ms Bailey

Match Reports Cricket U9B vs Jan van Riebeeck: On Tuesday the 28

th of February, the U9A’s took on one of our old foes in Jan van

Riebeeck Primary. Reddam House won the toss and elected to field first and while initially our bowlers pegged

the JVR batsmen back, a number of wides and overthrows loosened the grip which we had and gave

momentum to JVR. JVR only had 6 players so their two best players batted and bowled twice in this game giving

them a decisive advantage. Ultimately sloppy fielding would cost us the match although Riley Robinson and

Nabeel Mohammed both managed a tidy line and length.

Reddam House were always struggling to chase a competitive total but a few big hits from Andrea Parrello and

some smart batting by Scott Jackson put on a partnership of 19 and got us back in the game. Needing 11 runs

off the remaining two overs, Remi Meintjies and Nabeel Mohammed had to face the opening bowlers again

and managed 5 off the penultimate over. Unfortunately two wickets in the final over set Reddam back and we

finished just 5 runs short in an otherwise very good run chase.

Well done to all our boys who fought bravely until the very end.

(Adrian Kay)

U9B vs Tamboerskloef: For all the boys this was their first competitive match for the season.

Unfortunately the boys struggled in both the batting and bowling performance, against a very strong

Tamboerskloof.

Tamboerskloof batted first and put 42 runs on the board for the loss of 1 wicket…..a good score for Under 9

mini cricket, and difficult to beat.

Our Reddam boys tried their best, but were only able to score 27 runs and losing 5 wickets.

Final score: Tamboerskloof: 40 runs; Reddam: 17 runs

(Marc Fassbender)

U9B vs Kronendal: One of the best performances I have seen by our young cricket heroes, and their first away

match…and did they enjoy it.

Kronendal won the toss and decided to bat first. With a very good bowing performance by all players, Reddam

restricted Kronendal to only 29 runs, taking 4 wickets.

Page 10: From the Headmistress - Reddam House Term 1 ELS and Juni… · A magnificent gesture ... A big thank-you to all ... Miss B’s class are running a week late with starting the ‘My

It was not just the bowling that was impressive, but it was also good to see the high standard of fielding by

these young cricketers.

Then it was our turn to bat. The batting performance was just as impressive as the batting/fielding

performance.

Our boys were able to put 52 runs on the board for the loss of 2 wickets.

Final score: Reddam House: 48 runs; Kronendal: 21 runs

Grade 1-3 Swimming Gala Letter: Dear Grade 1-3 Parents,

Our Annual Swimming Gala will be held at the Long Street Baths on Wednesday 15 March 2017. Please note

the details for the practice and the event day below.

Page 11: From the Headmistress - Reddam House Term 1 ELS and Juni… · A magnificent gesture ... A big thank-you to all ... Miss B’s class are running a week late with starting the ‘My

Gala Practice Monday 13

th March 2017

The practices happen over the course of a normal school day. Each grade will be bussed to the Long Street

Baths in turn so that the children can practice each event. They will all take part in two fun races in the smaller

pool and will try out for the longer races in the larger pool (25M).

Please send your child to school with a towel, Reddam/Navy Blue/Black swimming costume and Reddam

swimming cap on the day. The grade 1s are to please arrive with their costumes under their school clothes as

they will leave at 08:30 promptly.

The practice is an informal session and is not attended by parents.

The Gala Wednesday 15th

March 2017

The children will come to school as normal and will be bussed to the pool. The gala starts at 09:30 and will end

at approximately 11:30. Please send your child to school dressed in their Reddam swimming costume and with

a Reddam swimming cap, goggles and a towel. Slip slops are also a preferred option as they have to walk a

short distance from the bus to the pool. If your child does not have the Reddam costume and cap they may

swim in a Navy Blue or Black cap and costume instead. A swimming cap is compulsory.

The children may bring a small bag to carry their equipment in. Please do not send food or provide your child

with food during the gala. We follow a short but intense programme and there is no time for eating and

drinking. The children will eat something before they leave and will go out to break on their return.

We encourage parents and extended family members to join us on the day to show their support but please be

respectful of the rules of the pool. This is a time for the children to display their skills, socialize with their friends

and enjoy the camaraderie of the races with their peers. Seating areas for parents are allocated and we ask

that you sit in these spaces and not with your child. Please remain in these seats when the lengths are swum in

the big pool as parents taking photographs at the side of the pool and waiting at the end of the lane for their

child to finish create a safety risk in the event of an emergency.

All children will return to school after the gala as we will resume the normal school timetable for the second

half of the day.

Yours sincerely
