From the President…. With Quebec Region wrapping up its regional events, attention is turning towards the National Event. We look forward to welcoming the 2015 Honorees to Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmer Program. In the week-long mix of tours, presentations, and meetings, we will have the opportunity to celebrate the diversity and passion of the nation’s best, most progressive, young farmers. It is always an honor to hear their presentations and have the opportunity to learn about their farm operations. For alumni, there is no better chance to share with each other the successes, challenges, and undertakings from your operation and family over the past year. The Hosting Committee has done a tremendous job organizing the 2015 National Event. I encourage all alumni to experience the program that the Alberta/NWT has organized. Special thanks to all involved for the effort, time and work put into the coordinating the 2015 National Event. Message du president….. La région du Québec ayant tenu son concours régional, l’attention est maintenant portée vers le concours national. Nous avons hâte d’accueillir les candidats de 2015 au concours des Jeunes agriculteurs d’élite du Canada. Durant la semaine de visites, présentations et réunions, nous aurons l’occasion de célébrer la diversité et la passion des meilleurs jeunes et plus progressifs agriculteurs au pays. C’est toujours un honneur de voir leurs présentations et d’avoir l’occasion de se renseigner sur leurs exploitations agricoles. Pour les anciens, il n’y a pas de meilleures chances de partager entre eux les réalisations, les défis et les nouveautés qui sont survenus dans leurs exploitations au cours de la dernière année. The North Lights Up!

The National Event is quickly approaching and the Alberta Committee couldn’t be more excited to welcome everyone this Nov.17-22, 2015 in Edmonton. The Program Itinerary has been finalized, the entertainment is booked, the hospitality suite is stocked. All that is missing is you. We sincerely hope to see you all so we can share the down home spirit of our beautiful province. Our pre-tour is filled with unique experiences that celebrate the entrepreneurial spirit of Albertans, from the Little Potato Company, to the Leduc Processing Plant and the Lois Hole Enjoy Centre, and let’s not forget the John Deere Reman Centre, but the pre-tour has a limit of 100 people so book early to ensure a spot. Plenty of time and consideration has gone in to the planning to ensure you all have a true Alberta experience. We don’t want to give away all the surprises and fun planned for the rest of the week, although the itinerary brochure does give the main highlights for you to consider. What we will say is don’t forget your cowboy hats for Saturday nights hoe-down and final farewell. We hope you add the national event to your calendars and come see the northern lights for yourself. We guarantee a good time will be had by all. With all the COYF attending, Edmonton may never be the same again. Who knows maybe you’ll pass some good luck on to their sports teams and help them win a game or two, not against Calgary though. On behalf of the Alberta Alumni we want to express to you all a heartfelt welcome and wish you a safe harvest season. See you in November!

Le concours national approche rapidement et le Comité de l’Alberta a très hâte de vous accueillir à Edmonton du 17 au 22 novembre 2015. Le programme du concours est finalisé, le divertissement est réservé et la suite de réception est approvisionnée. Tout ce qui manque est vous. Nous espérons sincèrement que vous serez tous présents pour que nous puissions partager l’esprit de notre magnifique province. Notre prévisite est remplie d’expériences uniques qui célèbrent la culture entrepreneuriale des Albertains, allant de la Little Potato Company au Centre de développement de l’industrie de la transformation des aliments de Leduc et au Centre Lois Hole Enjoy en passant par le Centre John Deere Reman. La prévisite à une limite de cent personnes, faites donc vos réservations tôt pour vous assurer d’avoir une place. Beaucoup de temps et d’efforts ont été consacrés à la planification pour vous assurer de vivre une vraie expérience albertaine. Nous ne voulons pas révéler toutes les surprises et les activités prévues pour le reste de la semaine, même si l’itinéraire vous présente les faits saillants. Tout ce que nous avons à dire est de ne pas oublier votre chapeau de cowboy pour la danse du samedi soir et pour le dernier au revoir. Nous espérons que vous ajouterez le concours national à votre agenda et que vous viendrez voir de vos yeux les aurores boréales. Nous garantissons des moments agréables à tous. Avec la présence de tous les anciens JAÉ, Edmonton peut ne plus être jamais la même. Qui sait, vous porterez peut-être bonheur à ses équipes sportives et les aiderez à gagner un match ou deux, mais pas contre Calgary par contre. Meet our 2015 Honourees

ALBERTA

Patrick and Cherylynn Bos of Bos Farm and Rock

Ridge Dairy in Ponoka, AB

Patrick grew up helping his parents operate their

beef and grain operation, and

began milking cows at age 14.

After he completed a diploma at

Olds College, and Cherylynn

finished her BSc degree, they

began to build their milk goat

farm business. Together with

their four children they operate

a herd of 1,400 dairy goats and a

milk and cheese processing

business.

Over the past eight years, Patrick and Cherylynn

have expanded their operation to include a milk

and cheese processing facility – Rock Ridge Dairy –

to process milk from their operation and from

other producers. During peak production, they

produce one and a half tons of cheese every week.

Their future plans include building a rotary parlor

to replace their existing parlor and boost milking

efficiency from 180 goats per hour to 900 goats

per hour.

Community involvement for Patrick and Cherylynn

includes hosting 300-400 people on their farm

every year, staying actively involved in their

church, the Crossroads Breeders Co-op and the

Alberta Organic Producers.

Avec leurs quatre enfants, ils

exploitent un troupeau de 1400

chèvres laitières et une entreprise de

Au cours des huit dernières années, Patrick et

Cherylynn ont agrandi leur exploitation pour

inclure une entreprise de transformation du lait,

Rock Ridge Dairy, afin de transformer le lait de leur

exploitation et celui d’autres producteurs. Au plus

fort de la production, ils produisent une tonne et

demie de fromage chaque semaine. Les projets

futurs comprennent la construction d’une salle de

traite rotative pour remplacer la salle de traite

existante afin de faire passer l’efficacité de la traite

de 180 chèvres à l’heure à 900 chèvres à l’heure.

L’engagement communautaire de Patrick et

Cherylynn comprend l’accueil de 300 à 400

personnes par année à leur ferme et l’implication

dans leur église, la Crossroads Breeders Co-op et

les Producteurs biologiques de l’Alberta.

David and Sara Simmons of Pure Holsteins in

Little Rapid, NL

Both David & Sara grew up on dairy farms, met

while studying at Nova Scotia Agricultural College

and have a lifelong passion for

agriculture as they carry on the

family tradition. Their farming

operation began in 2008 when

they began dairy farming with

David’s family. In just two

years, they took over full

management of the 100 cow

milking herd. In 2011, they

started Pure Holsteins Ltd. that

includes a unique succession

and business plan. David and Sara lease the barn

and quota from David’s father and his two uncles,

and they manage the cows and production.

Under David and Sara’s management, herd

productivity has increased from an average of 27

litres per cow per day (3.6 fat) in 2010 to 38 litres

(4.12 fat) in 2014. A special emphasis on breeding

high quality cows has improved the profitability of

cows and offspring and they recently installed the

first robotic milker in Newfoundland.

The Simmons’ are proud of their family farm

business, and support their community by

volunteering on the Deer Lake Agricultural Fall Fair

committee and David is president of the NS/NL

Holstein Branch.

David et Sara Simmons ont grandi dans une ferme,

se sont rencontrés lors de leurs études au Collège

de l’agriculture de la Nouvelle-

Écosse et ont une passion pour

l’agriculture tout en perpétuant la

tradition familiale. Ils ont lancé

leur entreprise agricole en 2008

lorsqu’ils ont commencé à

exploiter la ferme laitière avec la

famille de David. Après seulement

deux ans, ils ont assumé la gestion

complète du troupeau laitier de

100 vaches. En 2011, ils ont lancé Pure Holstein Ltd

qui comprend un plan de relève et d’affaires

unique. David et Sara louent l’étable et le quota du

père et des deux oncles de David et ils gèrent les

vaches et la production.

Sous la gestion de David et Sara, la productivité du

troupeau a augmenté d’une moyenne de 27 litres

par vache (3,6 gras) en 2010 à 38 litres (4,12 gras)

en 2014. Un accent particulier sur la reproduction

de vaches de haute qualité a augmenté la

rentabilité des vaches et de la progéniture. Ils ont

récemment installé le premier système de traite

robotisé à Terre-Neuve.

Les Simmons sont fiers de leur entreprise agricole

familiale et soutiennent leur communauté en

faisant du bénévolat pour le conseil

d’administration de la Foire agricole d’automne de

MANITOBA

Mark and Cori Pawluk of Pawluk Ag Ventures Ltd

in Birtle MB

Mark returned to his family farm in 1999 after

university and worked together

with his parents Brian and

Brenda. They farmed side by

side until 2011 when Mark’s

parents retired from active

farming, but they continue to

be an invaluable resource to

Mark and Cori. The Pawluk’s

grain farm grew steadily over

the years, and today, Mark and

Cori farm about 5,700 acres

(owned and rented) growing primarily wheat,

barley, flax and canola. The addition of a private

elevator and cleaning facility, with direct rail

access, has diversified their farm business. The

addition of flax processing – for human and pet

food – provides dependable year round business

for the plant.

When Cori isn’t helping on the farm, she works off-

farm as a registered psychiatric nurse. Mark and

Cori strive for a healthy balance of work, family

and leisure, together with their young son and

enjoy getting away camping in the summer and

travelling in the winter.

MANITOBA Mark et Cori Pawluk de Pawluk Ag Ventures Ltd à

Pawluk a pris constamment de

l’expansion au cours des années

principalement du blé, du lin et du canola sur

environ 2310 hectares (possédés et loués). L’ajout

d’un silo-élévateur privé et d’une installation de

nettoyage, avec accès direct à la voie ferrée, a

diversifié l’entreprise agricole. L’ajout d’une usine

de transformation du lin, pour l’alimentation

humaine et animale, procure du travail à l’année.

Quand Cori ne travaille pas à la ferme, elle travaille

comme infirmière psychiatrique autorisée. Mark et

Cori cherchent à trouver un équilibre sain entre le

travail, la famille et les loisirs avec leur jeune fils et

ils aiment faire du camping en été et des voyages

en hiver.

ONTARIO

Mike and Amy Cronin of Cronin Family Farms in

Bluevale, ON

Mike and Amy have always been passionate about

agriculture. They both grew up on family farms in

Ontario, and knew their

future would be on the

farm.

In 1998, Mike and Amy

bought their first farm – a

1,800 farrow to wean hog

operation that included 150

acres. Over the years, their

business and their family

have continued to grow. Their six children are at

the heart of everything they do.

They’ve grown their hog business with Canadian

and U.S. operations by expanding their land base

and production, always with a keen eye on risk

management. Innovation drives many of their

decisions, and in 2014 they built the first crate-free

farrowing system in North America after

researching the newest technology from around

the world. Their barn includes a thumb print entry

system, electronic sow feeders and video cameras.

Giving back to the local community and industry is

a high priority for Mike and Amy. Mike was

recently invited, to join the 21st Century Pork

Forum in the US. Amy is the current chair of

Ontario Pork and a recently appointed vice-chair of

the Growth Steering Committee of Agriculture in

Ontario.

ONTARIO

Mike et Amy ont toujours été passionnés de

ferme familiale en Ontario et

ils ont toujours su que leur

avenir serait en agriculture.

En 1998, Mike et Amy ont

acheté leur première ferme,

une exploitation porcine de

naissage de 1800 porcs, qui

comprenait 60 hectares. Au

cours des années, leur

entreprise et leur famille ont continué de croître.

Leurs six enfants sont au cœur de tout ce qu’ils

font.

Ils ont agrandi leur exploitation porcine en

augmentant leurs fonds de terre et en faisant

affaire avec des entreprises canadiennes et

américaines, tout en gardant un œil sur la gestion

des risques. L’innovation motive plusieurs de leurs

décisions. En 2014, ils ont construit le premier

système de mise bas sans case en Amérique du

Nord après avoir fait des recherches sur les plus

récentes technologies de partout au monde. Leur

grange comprend un système d’entrée avec

empreintes digitales, des mangeoires

électroniques pour les truies et des caméras vidéo.

Redonner à la communauté et à l’industrie est une

priorité pour Mike et Amy. Mike a récemment été

invité à être un des deux Canadiens à faire partie

du 21st Century Pork Forum aux États-Unis. Amy est

actuellement présidente d’Ontario Pork et a

récemment été nommée vice-présidente du

Comité directeur de la croissance de l’agriculture

en Ontario.

QUEBEC

Christian Bilodeau and Annie Sirois of Ferme Coqueron Inc.

in St-Odilon-de-Cranbourne QC Christian and Annie form the fourth generation at

the family farm.

The average milk production

per cow of their Ayrshire herd

has increased from 7,355 kilos

to 8346 kilos in the last five

years. From a genetic point of

view, the herd is constantly

improving and even won the

prestigious title of Master

Breeder. Even with the good results achieved to

date, Christian is always looking for new

technologies to improve his business. The cow

barn has recently been modified to accommodate

a milking robot, which has many options to help

with herd management.

Along with the dairy farm, Christian own a maple

bush with 1300 taps. Since 2003, changes and

improvements have been made, such as new type

of pipes and spouts, which had the effect of

doubling their production.

Christian, who likes challenges, is also deeply

involved in his community. For the last 13 years, he

has been President of the Ayrshire club of his

region and he was recently named Director of

Ayrshire Quebec. He also coaches volleyball, soccer

and running which allows him time with his four

children.

En plus d’une ferme laitière, Christian possède une

érablière de 1300 entailles. Depuis 2003, des

changements et améliorations d’équipement,

comme le type de tuyaux et de chalumeaux, ont

été apportés, ce qui a eu pour effet de doubler leur

production.

Aimant les défis, Christian s’implique

généreusement dans la communauté. Depuis 13

ans, il est le président du club Ayrshire de sa région

et a récemment été nommé directeur chez

Ayrshire Québec. Il est également entraîneur de

volleyball, de soccer et de course pour passer du

temps avec ses quatre enfants.

SASKATCHEWAN

Jeff and Ebony Prosko of J & E Prosko Farms

in Rose Valley

Jeff and Ebony share a strong passion for

agriculture and family farming.

Life revolves around the grain

and oilseed farm in

northeastern Saskatchewan

they operate with their two

daughters. They focus on

maximizing production

efficiency in their crops to

deliver the best yields and

quality. Technology plays an

important role in their operation, using variable

rate fertilizer and seed application, and the latest

seed genetics.

Farming with family provides additional

opportunities for the Prosko’s. Together with Jeff’s

family – parents Rick and Donna, brother Joel

(Meghan), and sister Giselle (Reagen) – they

operate ProSoils Inc., an independent ag retail

business that serves their community of Rose

Valley.

Off the farm, Jeff has a special interest in helping

advance good policy for young farmers. He sits on

several industry boards that play a role in

developing policy at the provincial and federal

levels, and also lends his time to groups focused on

networking and education.

SASKATCHEWAN

Jeff et Ebony Prosko de J & E Prosko Farms, à

Rose Valley,

Jeff et Ebony partagent une forte passion pour l’agriculture et l’agriculture familiale.

La vie gravite autour de la ferme de céréales et d’oléagineux qu’ils exploitent dans le nord-est de la Saskatchewan avec leurs deux filles. Ils mettent l’accent sur la maximisation de l’efficacité de leurs cultures afin d’obtenir les meilleurs rendements et la meilleure qualité. La technologie joue un rôle

important dans leur exploitation, car ils utilisent l’application à taux variable des engrais et des semences ainsi que la génétique dans la sélection de leurs semences. Le travail à la ferme en famille procure aux Prosko des possibilités supplémentaires. Avec les membres de la famille de Jeff - ses parents Rick et Donna, son frère Joel (Meghan) et sa sœur Giselle (Reagen) -, ils exploitent ProSoils Inc., un commerce de détail indépendant de produits agricoles qui dessert la communauté de Rose Valley. Hors de la ferme, Jeff a un intérêt particulier à faire avancer les politiques pour les jeunes agriculteurs. Il siège à de nombreux conseils d’administration qui jouent un rôle clé dans l’élaboration de politiques à l’échelle provinciale et fédérale et il consacre de son temps à des groupes axés sur le réseautage et l’éducation.

Greetings from Manitoba! This past August we had our annual meeting at Tyler and Dorelle Fulton's farm in Birtle Manitoba. I think one of the things I like best about our program is the opportunity to see parts of the province I would not otherwise have traveled to. I was born and raised in Manitoba but have never been to any of the towns where our annual meetings have been to date. But I digress, Tyler and Dorelle showed us a wonderful day. Approximately 20 alumni converged on their farm where we had our AGM, a wonderful dinner and wrapped up with Mark and Cori presenting their powerpoint.

Our executive is pretty much the same with Dustin Williams remaining as Vice, Dorelle Fulton is our Treasurer, Grant Dyck as Sponsorship and myself as Chair. The two changes we did have was Jill Krahn is now Nominations Chair, Jill took over from Kristi Guilford who has done a fabulous job over the last 4 years and Myron and Jill Krahn move into the Mentorship couple role. Much to our delight Angela Fox continues in the Administrator position. That's about all for now. Hope to see everyone in Edmonton.

Manitoba: Salutations du Manitoba! En août dernier, nous avons organisé notre

réunion annuelle à la ferme de Tyler et Dorelle

Fulton à Birtle. Je crois que ce que j'aime le plus à

propos de notre concours est la possibilité de voir

des coins de la province que je ne verrais pas

autrement. Je suis né et j’ai grandi au Manitoba,

mais je ne suis jamais allée dans les villes où ont eu

lieu nos réunions annuelles jusqu’à maintenant.

Mais je m’écarte du sujet. Tyler et Dorelle ont

organisé une magnifique journée. Environ 20

anciens se sont rassemblés à leur ferme où nous

avons eu notre AGA, un délicieux souper et fini la

soirée en visionnant la présentation PowerPoint de

Mark et Cori.

Notre exécutif est à peu près le même. Dustin

Williams est encore vice-président, Dorelle Fulton

est trésorière, Grant Dyck est responsable des

commanditaires et je suis présidente. Les deux

changements que nous avons effectués sont que

Jill Kahn est présidente des mises en candidature.

Jill a remplacé Kristi Guilford qui a fait un excellent

travail au cours des quatre dernières années.

Myron et Jill Kahn s’occupent maintenant du

mentorat. À notre grand plaisir, Angela Fox est

demeuré au poste d’administratrice.

C’est tout pour l’instant. Espérant vous voir tous à

Edmonton.
