Shrine projects in a community. Our second speaker was a well known PR specialist from Bangor and is an Anah Shriner, JR Mitchell. He provided an entertaining look at promotions in Bangor area. Our third speaker was Animal Trainer Noble Doug Terranova who spoke on the future of animal acts in the Circus. Doug has worked in the circus most of his life and is a highly respected animal trainer and showman. A great presentation from Doug, some great questions and answers, and then the whole situation was punctuated when Doug invited George Gardin to give his slant on the future. George has one of the largest stables of performing animals and has a large number of animals who he has retired and now cares for them. This was certainly a timely and very informative presentation much appreciated by all in attendance. George Cardin was also appreciated for his knowledge and positive attitude towards SCAFRA. Our final speaker for the morning was the very popular Joleen Whelchel from Greenville S.C. , who spoke about “Marketing Your Project”. This presentation was a refresher course on what she presented last year at our Seminar, and was a good lead in to the workshop she presented this year entitled: “Marketing Next Step”. The afternoon sessions started with our Bear Pit discussion session in all groups. One suggestion was to hold the Bear Pit session on Saturday before lunch. This suggestion will be analyzed and if workable we will have it as part of the program for 2016. We followed up the Bear Pit, in the afternoon, with four very diverse topics and sessions which carried on until Saturday at noon, This year’s topics were well received and from what we hear all ideas are being looked at seriously in several

areas. The topics were:* “Marketing the Next Steps” presented by Joleen Whelchel* “ Circus by Tangier Talent” presented by Al Penner and Jack Schram* “Super Suppers” by Anah Shriners,Convertible Unit.* Festival of Trees by Kora Shriners. Friday’s Fantastic Lobster Feast

Anah Shrine hosted everyone on Friday night to an outstanding Lobster feast at their newly acquired Temple in Bangor. They provided great entertainment and true to their word a great Lobster feed that was enjoyed by all.

Saturday night annual wind up banquet was up to usual standards and lots of fun and fellowship shared by those in attendance. Topping the evening off was local Maine Humorist, Clyde Folsom, who entertained in traditional Maine style and provided CDs of his humour to all in attendance. Parting words were expressed to the Executive by numerous delegates: “this was the best seminar in a number of years”!

Thank you Anah for hosting!

“29th. Annual Meeting Report”Saturday October 03, 2015

Bangor, Maine

The Annual Meeting and Seminar is a very fond memory to all who attended one of the best seminars in a number of years. Our Association has been fortunate, in our 29 year history, of attracting dedicated and future focused leaders. Each year at the Annual Meeting we are open to a renewal of our leadership, and any Member Temple can propose a candidate to the office of Third Vice President, or any other Executive position. I am pleased to report that the election results are as follows: President 2016 Dick Paul, 1st V.P. Marv Lovro, 2nd V.P. Nick Wladyczak, our new 3rd V.P. is James Van De Hay (a complete bio will be in the next edition of the newsletter) and Secretary/Treasurer is Ken McDougall. The Annual Meeting was very active with a lot discussion on the future and issues that are on the horizon which may cause concern for certain Shrine committees who have contracts with a circus producer who is experiencing contractual issues due to financing. (A further comment is made later in this news letter). 2014 Financial Report was not a positive one. Steps were taken by your Executive to stem the tide of loses experienced over the past two years, due to seminar expenses and diminished membership. Through the actions of the Executive we carried on and I anticipate a very positive change for the 2015 Annual report . We thank all our loyal members for their support and understanding!

SEMINARS

The Key to a SUCCESSFUL

Seminaris A Great Director General

The keys to a successful seminar are:* A good location with comfortable rooms and ability to handle the conference at an accepted price.* Good food and dining services* Things to do in your slack times* Ease of transportation to and from the airport* A well balanced list of speakers and presenters who are of interest to the delegates

Circus Producer and Show Declares Bankruptcy

Leaving Many Shrine Centers Hanging

Where do you begin with a story like this one? Some of us have been following with concern how our Shrine Centers can fall into so much difficulty when we operate on faith, a hand shake and a smile. SCAFRA as an organization can not take sides and can only provide, education, support and cautioning comments. We have preached: * the benefits of having only one year contracts * use only the SCAFRA and Shrine Contracts for Show Producers and Telemarketing * membership in SCAFRA opens the door to countless resources who can guide and caution you where to place your trust.

In Bangor we heard from some delegates there very real concerns about their contracts with Agente and circus producer Bill Cunningham. We were told of certain Shrine committees still waiting for monies owed for last year and other talked about what they could do if the situation got worse. It was only a few days after our seminar in Bangor that we learned of cancelation of contracts and the bankruptcy of Agente Circus. Shrine Centers received the news that Agente would not be able to fullfil their commitments and some had only a few short weeks of notice to find replacement show and straighten out all the ramifications of your show partner going bankrupt. Also for some their problems were compounded with Telemarketing arm of their Producers

contract was also compromised and impacted moving forward. Those in attendance at our seminar in Bangor had their plans in place and had substitutes ready to go on a moments notice. Finding a quality substitute, at the last minute, is not easy!

Agente made headlines a number of months ago, with a joint announcement with PETA, that their circus would not feature “exotic” animal presentations at any of their future shows. From information received it would appear that it had a negative effect on ticket sales and perhaps it had a negative effect on AGENTE’S bottom line.

AGENTE Entertainment &Fun Time Shows

GONE!

*****MOST IMPORTANT***** A competent and dedicated Director General who can remain calm and under control when all about him is in confusion! Charlie, Ralph Robshaw and your Secretary/Treasurer met and planned our various locations and options that would satisfy our needs. Arrangements were agreed to by service providers. Charlie did all the leg work only to be undone and challenged by the local establishments changing their commitments before the contract was

officially signed. However, everything worked out tremendously, the final product was outstanding, and costs were in line. The Director General is responsible for all the local arrangements. Starting with arranging manpower for: hosting, registration, AV equipment, setup of rooms for meetings, arranging for flags and flag corps to place the flags, National Anthems, all the time with a smile on his face. Well Charlie did all that even though we joked that ‘Captain Morgan’ had to bring his spiced presence before bed time.

The task of being a Director General in the Shrine is the key position for a successful event and we were very fortunate to have a competent and good natured Charlie Grindle in Bangor.
