We need an overall view of corporate structure. Bring to table what currently is available, and utilize it. Academics are not technology people. Need proactive business technology people.

Presentation: Linda Wise-Chief Academic Officer, Bill Ryan-Executive Director School Improvement and Administration, Clarissa Evans-Executive Director School Improvement and Curricular Programs:

Responding to Operating Budget Review Committee Questions on Common Core, February 2013 -Power Point attached.

Discussion/Questions for guests:

What support are we giving our teachers? Professional Development training is ongoing. Content specific learning communities. Across the nation we are leveraging resources. Getting hits on our Wiki across the world. Concentration on: Professional Practice Maryland Common Core Classroom planning- CFIP Transition plans by school

Are these Plans available to the public? Plans are available on school websites. Central Office worked on the central plan. At the elementary school level, RSTs and MSTs deliver transition training to teachers.

How often do they visit schools to offer support for the Common Core? At the elementary level, they make approximately 4 visits per school year.

Is the Professional Plan working and how is it being implemented? How much Professional Development have teachers received, 1 hour? 10 hours? Is it equitable throughout the school system?

There is a school improvement plan at each school. We have never been in this position before. We do not have a wealth of resources. Concerns about the resources that are available. Teachers are feeling the stress. Trying to make modifications. Need for more modules, and getting those to the schools. Looking at amending timeline. Very important that our teachers are prepared. Time is a big factor in Professional Development. Still living in current world and looking at what will be in the future. By 2014 we will be in good shape.

Is there a place in the budget that addresses the need for additional resources for Common Core? Where is this request?

Professional Development is in all curricular area budgets. There is some RTTT grant money we are using for Professional Development. In the past training was done differently, now the focus is on Problem solving and thinking

skills. What happens when students don’t meet the standard?

Monitoring happens throughout the year to address this.

Page 3: FY14 Operating Budget Review Committee Meeting February …

Curriculum budget has gone down significantly, how is it possible to do more with less?

Each Curriculum Coordinator thought through what they needed to do the work, and what changes they needed to make. They are using their money differently.

Refocused the work and dollars. How many RSTs and MSTs?

16 Are they doing Professional Development?

Yes, some. We are hearing from teachers and parents that they are concerned about the lack of resources for the Common Core. Linda Wise responded:

We are fiscally responsible, repurposing our funding. Are looking to make changes. When you hear these things, please let me know. HCPSS as a good plan. We will have teachers prepared by 2014 Old way we had many resources available.

Montgomery County and Pearson won I3 grant to develop resources for the process.

There is no staff to crank out resources.

Clarissa Evans remarked that: teacher developed resources are a strength and sharing resourcing through Wiki.

What is your process for getting resources to Wiki? 4 week long summer curriculum writing. Work with technology to put on curriculum delivery system. We are moving to get one resource tool. Challenge is in getting information on Wiki.

In the budget can you give us the place where these funds are located? 0411 – Mid level administration All funds there are used for Common Core.

Schedule of Presenters/Next Steps/Information Requests – Chair OBRC requests:

“Professional Plan” that went into each school plan. Breakdown of positions by school.

Dr. Foose has agreed to present to the committee and reveal her “global” vision and direction. (Date

yet to be determined)

Remaining BoE members will be invited as individuals to present to the Committee: Frank Aquino, Janet Siddiqui Focus –Christine and Marcilino Need to have motions ready for February 21, 2013 BoE final budget session.

Members will communicate comments and recommendations via email for the final motions

to the BoE. Meeting adjourned at 9:08 AM The next scheduled meeting is Monday, February 21 at 7:30 am in room B-8 at the ARL. (Minutes submitted by Teri Dennison)
